Canon Participates in Cairo ICT

6

Canon Central and North Africa (CCNA) has announced of its participation in the Cairo ICT event. Building on the success of Canon’s involvement in last year event and its strong partnerships in Egypt and wider the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region — the CCNA team are excited to be involved in the 2019 edition of this prestigious industry show in the wonderful city of Cairo. Under the High Patronage of H.E. Abdel Fattah Al Sisi President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Cairo ICT was held at the Egypt International Exhibition Center (EIEC) on 1-4 December 2019. Now in its 22nd year, the Cairo ICT show attracts more than 500 exhibitors and over 94,000 attendees, 39 per cent of which are senior-level executives and key decision-makers from across regional markets. Cairo ICT is an important event for connecting the key players in the MENA ICT industry. “Canon is committed to driving innovation in the MENA region’s imaging industry, adding value to the Egyptian market and the Egyptian economy. We are fully committed to growing our share and the overall market size in Egypt,” says Eiji Ota, IPS Director at CCNA for the DRBG region. “We are looking to penetrate the IT and CE channels in the country and participate in Government tenders for their mid-high range of laser printers through our strong network of system integrators and value-added resellers, such as our Egyptian partner Silicon21.”

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Industry is growing rapidly in the Middle East and around the world due to fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, 5G, AI, and big data analytics advances. Canon, known for its photography excellence, also offers best-in-class solutions for a wide variety of ICT related activities, including advanced printing services, digital security management, and CAD/ GIS support technology. Through these offerings, Canon is driving ICT development of its partners and customers in Egypt, MENA, and around the world.

Canon Managed Print Services

Managing a complex print service across multiple offices and print room sites, countries and brands can slow your business down, costing you time and money. Canon Managed Print Services (CMPS) helps to manage and monitor all the printing based solution from one portal, it allows managing end-user solutions and printer states as well. By easing the burden on employees with outsourced print management, providing cost-saving analysis, enhancing cybersecurity, as well as enabling energy and waste optimisation, CMPS takes printing services to the next level.

Canon Security Solutions

Security is not a destination, it is a journey through a multi-dimensional threat environment that can compromise your information from

many different sources. Information flows through organisations and the hands of numerous employees, each with varying degrees of risk awareness, while dangerous external threats remain pervasive. Canon’s security solutions offer a reliable, holistic, and multi-layered approach comprising of five key pillars: • Device Security — for authentication, HD overwrite, and encryption. • Print Security — for pull printing, keyword intercept, and auditing. • Document Security — for secure storage, access, and copy-lock. • Information Security — file encryption, tracking, and data loss prevention. • Cybersecurity — for consultation, testing, training, and incident response.

Canon CAD/GIS Printing Technology

ICT drivers are also raising the demand for CAD designs and GIS mapping, but without the right tools, it’s hard to produce accurate, high-quality prints in a way that’s easy, reliable and fits seamlessly into your workflow. Detailed large format prints are often the best way to communicate and Canon technology is at the forefront of these complex printing techniques. Canon CAD/ GIS Printing technology allows secure sharing of drawings, time and cost savings, as well as access to Canon’s team of leading CAD, GIS, and BIM experts. “We’re investing in Egypt, one of the largest economies in the region with a thriving entrepreneurial landscape that’s set to grow in the coming years. Canon will continue to support our business partners and customers, keeping them in tune with the latest imaging technologies, products, and services,” says Eiji Ota, IPS Director at CCNA for the DRBG region. “With the emergence of entrepreneurship and SMBs across the country, we will help to boost their business acumen with access to innovative technologies to support their growth and business objectives.”

El-Gabaly added that the African continent is rich in its resources, but it needs to provide a strong regional and international value chain that serves industry in the region. He noted that the pacprocess Middle East Africa 2019 exhibition represents an important platform for manufacturers in the field of packaging and this experience must be repeated in Africa where integration can be achieved between African countries. tinent's products and improving their competitiveness with foreign products. Furthermore, Chairman of the Chamber of Printing and Packaging Industries at the FEI Ahmed Gaber said that pacprocess and Interpack exhibition is one of the most important and largest exhibitions in Germany, which is being opened for the first time in Egypt. tools, technologies and programs that serve the sector as well as automation systems and processing technologies. He elaborated that there are 27 countries participating in the exhibition in addition to 74 local exhibitors, among them major packaging companies in Egypt and more than 400 foreign buyers brought in by various export councils from all over the world. Sheikh Zayed Book Award Organises ArabRussian Cultural Dialogue in Moscow

8

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award has organised a panel discussion in Moscow recently to highlight the pivotal cultural role of the RussianEmirati cultural dialogue. Held at the Ritz-Carlton, Moscow, the ArabRussian Cultural Dialogue event further aimed to introduce Russian audiences to Sheikh Zayed Book Award initiatives and attract further nominations to its annual award. Maadhad Hareb Al Khaili, UAE Ambassador to Russia, took part in the session alongside Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Authority and SecretaryGeneral of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, and Mikhail Bogdanov, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Special Representative on the Middle East and Africa. Also present were Prof. Vitaly Naumkin, President of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences; Yury Pulya, Head of the Department of Periodical Press, Book Publishing and Printing of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications (Executive Secretary of the Organising Committee); Dr. Vasily Kuznetsov, Director of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences; and Dr. Dmitry Mikulsky, Chief Researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The panel discussion touched on the importance of developing relationships based on mutual respect, acceptance of the other, dialogue, and tolerance, and shed light on the already growing UAE-

Russia relations, especially in the cultural field. At the outset of the event, Dr. Ali bin Tamim briefed the attendees on the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, launched in 2006 and carrying the name of the UAE’s late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who believed in knowledge, science and culture as the pillars of a nation’s progress and the cornerstone of civilisation. "On several occasions, the late Sheikh Zayed noted that books and culture are the basis of a civilised and highly developed nation," bin Tamim noted. "We aim, through the Award, to motivate talented minds across a spectrum of disciplines and recognise the most creative and influential intellects in contemporary Arab culture." He stressed that Arab and Russian relations are deeply rooted in history and are currently witnessing significant developments across various fields. He also spoke about the history of Orientalism and the influence of early translators, who contributed to fueling Arabs' interest in Russian culture and literature. Bin Tamim gave examples of Arab and Russian Orientalists and translators who played pioneering and influential roles in building deep intellectual and cross-cultural connections. Orientalism began with Russian interest in the ‘East’, and the establishment of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1724 led to the emergence of a Russian Orientalist movement that helped introduce Arab culture to the country and extend bridges

of dialogue and communication between the two cultures. He discussed famous Russian Orientalists including Ignaty Krachkovsky, author of History of Arab Geographical Literature, in which he clarified that trade was the channel through which Arab culture was transmitted to Russia. He noted that Arab culture had inevitably attracted the attention of many great Russian writers, poets, novelists and philosophers such as Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, and Anton Chekhov, among others. Tolstoy, for example, learned Arabic, and exchanged correspondence with Sheikh Muhammad Abdo, in which he showed his great respect for Arab culture. From this standpoint, bin Tamim stressed the importance of developing an Arab-Russian ontology that allows researchers to retrieve translation, synonyms and meanings of words from Arabic and Russian dictionaries. He also called for organising an Arab-Russian linguistic conference, focusing on the origins, history and details of these two languages to take advantage of their richness and address their impact on civilisation and culture. Bin Tamim also called for establishing a historical dictionary that focuses on the linguistic impact between Arabic and other languages, especially Russian. "This necessitates concerted efforts, mechanisms and ontology that combines Arabic literature and language with Russian. This also requires talented professional translators to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors who translated great Russian works and literature into Arabic. This is what the Sheikh Zayed Book Award is all about and is trying to achieve through its nine categories." The UAE and Russia come together in several annual events, reflecting their deep interest in enhancing their relations especially in the cultural and artistic domains. The two countries also take part in exhibitions and festivals held in each other’s nation, sharing expertise and consolidating historical cultural relations.

EPA Launches Project to Promote Translation of Arabic Books The Emirates Publishers Association (EPA) has announced the launch of a new project titled ‘Meet the Emirati Publishers’, which aims to expand the global reach of EPA publishers and support the translation of Arabic books into various languages. Making the announcement at its 4th board meeting held recently at EPA offices in Sharjah Publishing City Free Zone, EPA officials explained that the strategic objectives would be achieved by providing opportunities to its members to participate in professional programmes routinely held at international book fairs. In addition, it would also help publishers take advantage of the currently available translation grants to facilitate the purchase of foreign and translation rights. Ali Bin Hatem, President of EPA, said: "Through the launch of ‘Meet the Emirati Publishers’, EPA seeks to encourage the translation of Arabic books into various foreign languages which will not only contribute to world literature but also shine a light on the rich Arab culture. We will achieve these goals by supporting the participation of our publishers in seminars, panel discussions and presentations and other communications platforms at international book fairs.” Bin Hatem added: “EPA will also assist its publisher members by facilitating networking with their

counterparts in other countries to seek opportunities for translation projects, utilising the available translation grants. EPA will select four publishers to participate in any given event, based on their interest in a specific foreign language and how effectively they pitch their ideas at EPA’s matchmaking events.” According to the project plan, EPA will provide the selected publishers with a free guaranteed space or stand at the participating book fairs and contact numbers of the entities they are likely to meet during the matchmaking events. Apart from the opportunity to participate in panel discussions and cultural activities in collaboration with the foreign book fairs, EPA will also provide its members with a catalogue of publishing and translation rights of the publishers they are meeting with. Other services provided by EPA include the creation of a platform where publisher members can schedule meetings and appointments. Following the conclusion of the book fair, participating publishers must submit proof of at least two agreements signed during the visit, proof of attending the matchmaking events as well as a report on these meetings. In line with the objectives of this project, EPA’s plan for the year 2020 includes its participation in some of the major book fairs taking place,

including London, UK; Bologna, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Beijing, China; Frankfurt, Germany; and Guadalajara, Mexico. The Emirates Publishers Association (EPA) was founded in 2009 by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi who has led the efforts to advance the publishing industry in the UAE. The organisation is dedicated to serving and developing the publishing sector and advancing the role of Emirati publishers through training and mentorship programmes. EPA represents the interests of professionals in the UAE’s publishing industry by working on advancing their rights and has a remit to improve the conditions of the profession and its related laws in coordination with concerned authorities locally and internationally.

Netpak Gains Exceptional Efficiencies with EFI’s Packaging Suite Technologies

10

Netpak, Quebec’s largest privately held manufacturer of printed folding cartons, has partnered with Electronics For Imaging, Inc., to further advance its integrated workflow for business and production management. Netpak is the first North American company to adopt the complete Packaging Suite for folding carton production by EFI. In line with Netpak’s core values of excellence and ongoing commitment to innovation, this software enhancement, based on best-in-class quality management practices, represents a significant step forward in print technology and raises the bar for folding carton manufacturers around the globe.“This comprehensive workflow solution not only supports the company’s ambitious growth plans but also underpins our culture of innovation, technology and unparalleled customer focus that has served as the foundation of our success for over 15 years,” said Carlo Cammalleri, Netpak’s Co-Founder. Known for fast lead times and exceptional quality, the Montrealbased packaging manufacturer has long relied on EFI’s packaging ERP software, Radius, as the cornerstone of its automated workflow. Using advanced traceability procedures that integrate job creation capability and automated, robotized connectivity, Netpak is able to

maintain its competitive advantage in automation and plant-wide efficiencies, offering greater flexibility and allowing Netpak to align with its clients’ speed-to-market needs. The company also uses an innovative prepress workflow that operates seamlessly with the Packaging Suite to optimize Netpak’s productivity and capability to produce packaging solutions more efficiently. Netpak has enhanced its workflow over time with additional components from EFI’s Packaging Suite that allow for a full integration with Radius. Most notably, Netpak was the first folding carton company to launch iQuote, EFI’s intelligent estimation and planning solution. Data-driven productivity with industry-leading workflow solutions. To further advance the company’s operations, Netpak conducted a successful business review with EFI to identify areas where Netpak could gain greater value in its business model. “We’ve seen great results from the first phase of updates in our software infrastructure,” said Salvatore Novello, Netpak’s CoFounder, “Ultimately, we reached a point in our company’s growth where we believed we could further optimize procedures in order to support our business objectives. In partnership with EFI, we evaluated our roadmap and focused on areas where performance could be improved, such as shop floor data

collection and scheduling.” Netpak transitioned from Radius shop floor data collection to EFI Auto-Count 4D (AC4D), a production intelligence platform that allows users to automatically collect accurate and live data including counts, press statuses, speeds and other critical information directly from production equipment, all in real time. The launch also includes a dynamic scheduling engine, EFI PrintFlow®, bringing the latest technology into Netpak’s operations to improve overall productivity throughout the plant. PrintFlow automatically changes schedules as conditions change, thus giving users the ability to easily remove operational bottlenecks. "We are linking shop floor data collection with AC4D and automated scheduling with PrintFlow to add more value and productivity gains. It allows Netpak to be more efficient and uniquely positions us against our competitors,” said Georges Berbari, Netpak’s Chief Operating Officer. “With these recent workflow enhancements, we expect to make massive improvements to our overall order-to-cash process and push jobs through the plant faster, which will be a big win for us and for our customers.” Moreover, Netpak has also implemented a QMS Module with advanced requirements that is highly based on stop and fix procedures driven from best-in-class industrial practices.

Walsworth Announces Acquisition of Ripon Printers Walsworth announced today it will acquire Ripon Printers in Ripon, Wisconsin, on Dec. 31, 2019. The purchase of Ripon Printers will enhance Walsworth’s print manufacturing capabilities, giving customers additional printing, direct mail, fulfillment and digital communications options. The Ripon Printers plant will remain open and regular production schedules will continue as planned, but will operate under the Walsworth brand beginning Jan. 1, 2020. “Walsworth and Ripon Printers share a similar history and culture,” said Don Walsworth, President of Walsworth. “Like us, they have a long history as a family-owned company focused on meeting the needs of their customers, employees and communities.” Ripon Printers’ roots dates to the Civil War, when the Ripon Commonwealth Press began publication. In 1962, the Lyke family bought the newspaper. A few years later a web press was purchased, enabling Ripon to

diversify its product focus. Officials at Walsworth state the acquisition of Ripon Printers is consistent with the company’s strategy for growth. The purchase will augment their catalog manufacturing operations, which will increase Walsworth’s market share in that space. In 2010, the company purchased IPC in St. Joseph, Michigan, and in 2012 it acquired The

Ovid Bell Press in Fulton, Missouri. Both facilities are key operations, as Walsworth expects Ripon Printers to be as well. The company has made significant investments in people, capital and technology and its goal is to continue to grow across all locations. After the acquisition, Walsworth’s annual revenue will exceed $200 million.

Optimum Signs Installs Kongsberg X24 Digital Cutter from CMYUK

Matt, “When we delivered this job for the first time, the comment that immediately came back was had we bought these in from somewhere else? The quality was so much better. Previously we had been applying 750 graphics to 750 panels, now we apply graphics to four large panels and the X24 does the rest.” The company produces a whole plethora of signs from digitally printed ones to traditional neon with it being the only company in the UK that manufactures both neon and LED signage in-house. Historically, Optimum would buy-in the acrylic casing that the neon sits in. Now, thanks to the X24, the company is fabricating these in house – at far better quality than anything it was buying-in. The same applies to folded Dibond trays and flatcut lettering. “It’s revolutionised the way we work,” says Matt. “We’re doing so much stuff on it. It’s unbelievable. It’s such an amazing machine.” One of the surprising insights the X24 has bought to Matt is how restrictive his thinking had been in the past albeit unconsciously. “I didn’t realise it but we would push a client to work in a certain way because we didn’t

want to have to buy stuff in, now I’m pushing for all sorts of things.” The X24 is driving innovation. The latest job for a VIP event for Rolex at luxury Northcote Manor Hotel and Michelin Star restaurant in Blackburn, involved the creation of a 3D gold crown featuring RGB colour changing inside of it. “We did that because of the Kongsberg X24,” he says. Matt christened his company Optimum meaning the most favourable situation for growth and success. Also the inclusion of the word ‘mum’ pays homage to the unstinting emotional and practical support of his family. Established now for ten years, Optimum has steadily built up a reputation for quality and excellence. “I’m such a perfectionist which can annoy people sometimes,” admits Matt. “When Nick Reed at CMYUK said the X24 was accurate down to .01 of a millimetre I didn’t believe him, but it’s absolutely true and this accuracy allows us to come up with all types of concepts with confidence. I’ve come full circle making furniture now, which in the past really excited me. Walking into the CMYUK showroom and seeing the X24, I’ve never looked back.”

ME‌Printer December 2019

Matt Austin has come full circle. Owner and MD of Optimum Signs he started out studying furniture and product design at University. Fast-forward two decades, he’s fabricating a bespoke Cinderella pumpkin carriage style bed – all with the help of his newly acquired Esko Kongsberg X24 digital cutting table. The X24 cutter purchased from CMYUK, the UK’s largest independent supplier of digital wide format printers, cutters and materials, is the standard sign configuration that comes complete with router, kiss cut knife, drag knife and a camera system for perfect print to cut registration. It also comprises a conveyorised bed for handling roll-to-roll media. The need for a cutterThe sale was instigated by the need to fulfil a sizeable trade job for a major retail collaboration. This involved applying standard vinyl to 16,000 pre–routed lacquered MDF panels. However, the trade customer developed an issue with its CNC router, and was about to pull the plug on the project when Matt decided to step in, buy a digital cutter and save the day. Matt’s first port of call was to Sue Hayward –– a long term trusted sales contact, now Senior Digital Sales Consultant at CMYUK. Matt was invited to CMYUK’s demonstration showroom in Shrewsbury, where he was introduced to Nick Reed, CMYUK’s Esko Business Manager who introduced him to the considerable proven benefits of the X24. It was love at first sight, and the Kongsberg X24 was swiftly despatched to Preston, with Matt having one-to-one training on the system with CMYUK. The Kongsberg est arrivée!The Kongsberg X24 forms a central hub that ignites fresh ideas and concepts, which importantly attracts new customers. It has also automated many processes saving time and money. For example, Optimum produces 750 signs every three to four months on a constant rollover for one client. This has traditionally taken two and a half to three days to produce, but the X24 has taken this down to four hours, with an hour and a half of actual operator input. Says

Edelmann Group Delighted with the Rapida RDC 106

14

The Edelmann Group in Heidenheim has been operating a Rapida RDC 106 rotary die-cutter for the past two years. The company is known for its commitment to innovative processes and technologies and was proud to serve as a pilot user of the die-cutter in packaging production, accompanying developments from the first tentative steps, through intensive field testing to final series maturity. In the meantime, the new machine is being used in daily production. The Rapida RDC 106 is configured with three process units and han-

dles folding cartons destined for international brands in the health care, beauty and consumer goods sectors. In most cases, the products are cut, embossed and stripped in an inline process. The specialists at Edelmann are delighted with the high production performance of the rotary die-cutter. It runs at speeds up to 15,000 sheets per hour, and also impresses with very fast makeready. “That makes the Rapida RDC 106 so interesting for us,” says technical director Oliver Sattel. “Our competitiveness is based on a combination of quality and speed. For that reason, it is important for us to be involved in the development of new machines from the very beginning – and the Rapida RDC 106 is a perfect example for successful participation in the development process from the drawing board through to series maturity. We view this as genuine partnership – and we have maintained such a relationship with Koenig & Bauer for many years.”

Alongside the sheer speed, the high-quality cutting and creasing results achieved with standardised tools are an important strength of the Rapida RDC 106. The excellent embossing results at a previously unknown production speed are a further bonus. The facility to assign individual processes to separate towers permits a significantly wider range of product options compared to traditional die-cutting systems. Flexibility regarding the length of cutting and creasing lines is one example. Before the Rapida RDC 106 could be fully integrated into production, it was necessary to adapt a few aspects of the company’s workflows for a rotary process, for example tool procurement and sheet layouts. The employees, too, had to rethink the approach to diecutting jobs. Once everything was sorted, the quality of the products was spot on. Rotary die-cutting is fundamentally different from a flatbed process. Only the final result – a folding carton – is identical.

3D Printer Driver Cuttlefish by Fraunhofer Now Available for Mimaki Printers Cuttlefish is a universal 3D printer driver developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD. It translates 3D scan data or 3D models generated by design and texturing software for 3D printers of various manufacturers. It also makes it possible to work with numerous print materials simultaneously, exactly reproduce the geometry, colors and fine color transitions of the original, and even simulate the finished product on the screen beforehand. Now, users of Mimaki’s 3DUJ-553 3D printer can opt for the driver, which also supports Stratasys Polyjet 3D printers. To achieve this, the software was adapted to the specific features of the printer and an appropriately calibrated color profile, including translucency, was created. Switching between printers from both manufacturers is easy. “The combination of 3DUJ-553 and Cuttlefish will greatly expand the possibilities of full color 3D printing, which is something we will continue to support,” said Mimaki’s General Manager of 3D Project Research and Development, Masakatsu Okawa, in explaining the decision to open the interfaces to Fraunhofer IGD. The printer driver excels above all in color value continuity, translucent design processing and geometric accuracy. Cuttlefish supports RGBA textures containing both color and translucency information, which ranges from opaque to fully transparent. This

makes it possible to print and integrate semi- or fully transparent materials with ease. The driver allows users to print multiple overlapping models, each with one or more RGBA textures. It also factors in how an object scatters light as well as how color and surface structures change depending on lighting. A sample 3D anatomical model, printed on the Mimaki 3DUJ-553, shows the possibilities for users in industry and medical technology. Each of the 28 total parts was given a different material that, when combined, are

described by 425-megapixel color textures. Transparent parts of the model were generated by simply modifying the RGBA data. 3D models based on RGBA data are supported by standard 3D file formats and most design and texturing tools. Even established image processing programs such as Adobe Photoshop can work with RGBA textures. This makes Cuttlefish an all-purpose tool in professional 3D printing that closes the gap in quality between virtual design and its reproduction as a 3D print.

drupa World Tour 2019/2020 Stops off in Southeast Asia

ME‌Printer December 2019

The countdown is on: drupa starts in exactly 195 days, on 16 June 2020. For eleven days, the printing, media and packaging industry will gather in Düsseldorf for its world's leading trade fair and take a joint look at their technological future. For several weeks now, the drupa world tour 2019/2020 has been running to highlight competitive technology trends for players from the printing, media and packaging industries, to present the extensive

16

drupa programme – and also, to arouse joyful anticipation. After stops in North and South America, this week (5 and 6 December) the tour will stop in Hanoi and Saigon. After the two specialist conferences in Vietnam, two further conferences will follow on December 10th and 12th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in the Thai metropolis of Bangkok. At all conferences, drupa director Sabine Geldermann will present the current status of preparations as well as current exhibitor figures. She will also provide the concept of three drupa touchpoints as special exhibition areas, the drupa cube`s conference programme and in addition the new meeting zone between start-ups and established exhibitors - drupa dna. Claus Bolza-Schünemann, drupa President and CEO of Koenig & Bauer AG, and Dr Markus Heering, Managing Director of the VDMA Printing and Paper Technology Association and PrintPromotion GmbH, will explain key technology trends at drupa 2020 and their impact on the printing and packaging industry. In the spring of 2019, leading drupa exhibitors met for future-workshops - and in this context identified four megatrends, which might potentially disrupt today`s routines in the printing and packaging industry; it`s about Artificial Intelligence, Connected Customer, Platform Economy and Circlular Economy. "These trends will profoundly change process flows in both the printing and packaging industries,” stresses Markus Heering. Especially in the increasingly globalized market environment, it is going to be vital for suppliers of printing and finishing services to keep a close eye on the technological future and to maintain their own competitiveness through appropriate investments. "In order to remain competitive despite increasing customer demands for quality as well as for delivery times and increasing cost pressure, enterprises will have to establish more efficient, highly automated processes. Otherwise, connected customers will switch with a click of the mouse to those

competitors who can offer them up-to-date services," warns Heering. At the same time, the industry has to deal with society's demand for environmentally friendly, sustainable products. The aim is to transfer those recycling solutions that are already highly developed in many areas and regions into a global circular economy. At the conferences in Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, eight leading suppliers of printing and finishing technology or packaging solutions will present concrete Print 4.0 approaches – taking up the named megatrends. Press manufacturers such as Heidelberg, Koenig & Bauer, Windmöller & Hölscher and H.C. Moog will be presenting digitally networked, highly automated technology for the press hall. In addition, suppliers of post-press and finishing solutions, such as Mueller Martini, LEONHARD KURZ Stiftung & Co. KG, and POLAR-Mohr, as well as the specialist for light-based drying and curing technology – IST-Metz – will give an outlook to the future in their respective specialist areas. Be it fully networked digital cutting systems, fully automated Finishing 4.0 for cutting, stitching and binding brochures and books of variable formats or be it "Digital Foiling" for metallizing and seamless finishing of printed products – whether in commercial printing, industrial printing or packaging. Panel discussions will round off all the four specialist conferences. "We have put together an exciting program that provides participants on site with concrete insights into drupa planning and the technological future of our industry. We would like to show them why a visit to drupa 2020 will definitely be worthwhile," says Heering. In order to reach as many experts from the industry as possible on site, PrintPromotion GmbH, the organizer of the conference, cooperated closely with the respective national printing associations. "We thank the leaders of the Vietnam Printing Association, Malaysia Printers Association and Thai Printing Association for their support," he explains.

VITS International to Focus on Finishing Solutions at drupa In all corners of the earth, there are thousands of stories to be told about the impact drupa has had on the businesses, as well as the people, that make up the global print industry. In just a few short months, drupa will be in full swing, and there is sure to be a particular buzz on the finishing side; according to the most recent drupa Global Trends Report, finishing equipment is the number one focus for investment. For VITS International, a supplier of variable data sheeting and finishing systems for the printing, packaging, digital, and converting markets, 2020 will be the third time the company has made the trip to Dusseldorf to be a part of the world’s largest print trade fair. The company is led by Girls Who Print paragon Deirdre Ryder, President and CEO as well as Chairman of the Board of the Association for PRINT Technologies and President of Global Print. Deirdre shared her drupa story with us. In 2012 VITS America rebranded to VITS International and took its place on the world stage at drupa. Armed with a new product line, the company was prepared to serve its global customer base, grow a new customer base, and cement its international reputation with the speed and credibility that can result from exhibiting at drupa. Deirdre says, “Our first drupa in

2012 was the perfect opportunity to build on our established success and reputation, and expand our presence in the global market. Our success at drupa 2016 was undoubtedly fuelled by our success in 2012; we were able to keep the drupa buzz and maintain our sales momentum in the years between the shows, establishing VITS as an innovative and viable finishing partner on a global scale. drupa gave us a chance to prove that we could stand toe-to-toe with our competition, and to demonstrate

ME‌Printer December 2019

that we understand the needs of worldwide print businesses.” And prove themselves they did! By the time drupa 2016 rolled around, inkjet was advancing rapidly, and VITS International was ready and waiting to meet the finishing demands of the market. Now, thanks to a lot of hard work combined with ‘the drupa effect’, VITS has the luxury of going into drupa 2020 as an established and respected name in finishing. So why is a presence at drupa so crucial to American businesses? For VITS International, to miss out on drupa is to miss out on a truly global opportunity. “I think we lose some of the global footprint by not going to Europe, and especially this show. It’s an incredible business advantage to exhibit at drupa and see what other companies are offering and how they work, to compare and maybe learn how you could do it better, even see needs in the marketplace not being filled.” Deirdre maintains that it’s not just exhibiting at drupa that can boost your business – printers in North America should be seriously considering the opportunity to experience the epicentre of global print first hand.

Next Generation of Packaging: Tetra Pak’s Connected Packaging Platform

ME‌Printer December 2019

Tetra Pak just launched their connected packaging platform which provides shoppers with a vast amount of information on where the product comes from or where to recycle the package and so on. They turn ordinary milk cartons into interactive information channels using code generation, digital printing and data management. The packaging industry lives off innovations, advanced technologies like robotics and creative minds that think out of the box. That’s how, over the last years’ progress, paper bottles came into being, as well as DotCode and plantable packaging and time will tell what else is possible in the packaging industry. The packaging company Tetra Pak is on a great way and just

18

launched their new connected packaging platform. Their technology turns ordinary milk cartons into interactive information channels using code generation, digital printing and data management. The future in general – but also with special regard to the packaging industry – is digital. Supply chains are being constantly controlled, there’s more transparency, improved quality control and new and more efficient ways of communication withcustomers. The connected package concept enables food and beverage manufacturers to design their packaging as data carriers that provide better traceability and value to all stakeholders throughout the value chain. The development of the con-

nected packaging platform was strongly influenced by industry 4.0 technologies. It’s the result of a collaboration between Tetra Pak and ABB – both companies bringing in their expertise, ABB’s digital solutions and Tetra Pak’s expertise in food manufacturing. Before launching their connected packaging platform, Tetra Pak did some research and found that people in both the US and UK are ready for package interactivity. In China, digital packages are already proving successful. Many products in China carry a QR code on the packaging that if scanned via smartphone leads the consumer to a web page where he or she can find all relevant information on where the product was made to where the package can be recycled and so on. “We are unlocking new opportunities for our customers to get more value from packaging than even before. No longer is it only about product protection and functionality, it is about connectivity. The future of packaging is undoubtedly digital: this launch is a step towards a truly intelligent package, and we are excited to collaborate with our customers on this journey,” says Ivan Nesterenko, Vice President, Cross Portfolio at Tetra Pak.

Paper Bottles – The Future of Eco-Friendly Packaging? Could paper be a new sustainable type of bottle packaging? Maybe it is. Paboco (The Paper Bottle Company) grown from the start-up and innovation expert EcoXpac, has developed a 100% bio-based and recyclable paper bottle. The wood fibres used come from sustainable, well-managed forests and for each tree logged two to three are (re)planted and enabled to grow to an optimal size. The Paper Bottle Company is a venture between the paper packaging material developer BillerudKorsnäs and the bottle manufacturing specialist ALPLA, who recently announced that Avantium will be one of the technology providers for the Paper Bottle Project. In order to use it for various purposes, the bottle needs an inner barrier that contains liquids and prevents gas permeability through the bottle, which is necessary for beverages such as beer and carbonated soft drinks.

There are two prototypes of the paper bottle: One uses a thin recycled PET polymer film barrier, while the other has a 100% plant-based PEF (polyethylene furanoate) polymer film barrier by Avantium. PEF’s barrier and thermal properties are claimed to be superior to conventional PET and may become the next-generation polyester. Nevertheless, both prototypes are an important step towards a circular approach to packaging. Carlsberg Group, Coca-Cola Europe, Absolut Company and L’Oréal climbed on the bandwagon and joined the Paper Bottle Company. Carlsberg founded a Together Towards Zero Initiative, which includes a commitment to reach zero carbon emissions by 2030. At the C40 World Mayors Summit in Copenhagen on the 9th to 12th October, Carlsberg said that the “Green Fibre Bottle” prototypes

will be produced from sustainably sourced wood fibres and can be recycled completely. Carlsberg already replaced their plastic wrap for six-packs with a snap-pack and was able to reduce the plastic content by up to 76% compared to conventional multipacks. The Coca-Cola Company formulates its vision of working towards a “World Without Waste”, which includes goals to make all packaging 100% recyclable and to ensure that at least 50% of plastics bottles consist of recycled materials. The paper bottle concept could make a valuable contribution to achieving those goals. Paper bottles could also be an ecofriendly alternative in the cosmetic industry. Since October, L’Oréal is the first cosmetics company to be involved in the Paper Bottle Project and announced the launch of the paper-based cosmetic tube in 2020.

Innovative Signage Solutions to Offer Respite to the GCC Retail Industry Despite current conditions and strong headwinds, the GCC retail market is stated to have been on a growth path. As per a report, the GCC retail sector is expected to grow at CAGR 4% from USD 253.2 bn in 2018 to USD 308 bn in 2023. According to industry expert International Expo Consults, the innovative signage and digital signage solutions at the retail locations will play a huge part in the growth of the sector. International Expo Consults hosts SGI Dubai – the largest industry exhibition for the signage and graphic imaging industry in the MENA region. “The UAE and Saudi are big markets for the GCC retail sector and in both the countries the growth is driven by the rise in population, spending capacity, rise in GDP per capita and a growing and evolving tourism sector. Yes, there has been added pressure from the success and the growth of e-commerce, but all is not gloom and doom for the brick and mortar retailers. Those who would are ready to adopt innovative solutions such as segmented reality and other new age signage solutions will fare much better than before”, said Sharif Rahman, CEO,

International Expo Consults. Levels of interactivity with digital signages have gone a notch higher and these include touch, multitouch, augmented reality, gesture control to mobile and social media integration. These interactive retail digital signages are set to redefine the signage industry’s canvas in the GCC region. These systems can be found in varied environments such as retail stores, hotels, restaurants, healthcare institutions, amusement zones to corporate buildings, among many other locations. Ecommerce sites such as Noon, Amazon (or Souq in some regions) or Namshi have all evolved in recent times including introducing heavy discount periods, improved product range, same-day or nextday deliveries. This has encouraged various other retailers such as hypermarket giant Carrefour to introduce same-day delivery of items including perishables. The traditional retail is hugely reliant on entertainment access such as multiplexes, FECs and F&B options in the same retail space to drive footfall. This trend will only gather steam due to the indoor preference of the residents of the GCC due to

its extreme weather conditions. The shopping festivals provide an essential growth factor to retail spending in the region. The growing number of tourists that visit the UAE each year as well as the opening of Saudi Arabia as a tourist option and the numerous new entertainment options in Oman and Bahrain will only go to increase the inbound tourism in the area. The increasing number of tourists will positively contribute towards the sector as well. Digital signage avenues have witnessed a rapid growth surge in the region as the retail market has evolved drastically over the past few decades which has boosted the signage industry. With the onset of this new technology, the retail sector is poised to get a makeover with new interactive digital signages in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. According to sources, the digital signage market is worth $18.55 billion globally. SGI Dubai is an ideal converging point where visitors and exhibitors can reach out with architects, sign makers, print and production manufacturers, media agencies, real-estate developers, brand and image consultants among others.

part in the packaging ecosystem. The discussion will consider how the industry can educate consumers to understand the different types of packaging materials, the resources and carbon required to produce them, and how to correctly dispose of them so that they do not adversely impact the environment. The BIG Carbon Debate will be the focus of day two as authorities in their field take to the stage to discuss packaging’s impact on the Government’s target to achieve net-zero carbon output by 2050. The debate will consider how plastic bans would impact the UK’s ability to reach its target by assessing the carbon footprint of plastic vs the ‘sustainable’ alternatives. Victoria Blake, Event Director of Easyfairs’ UK Packaging Portfolio, comments: “We are very excited

to be welcoming the BIG Carbon Debate to Packaging Innovations 2020. It is important to us that our seminar content is constantly evolving to reflect the current conversations taking place in the industry. Our new debate platform takes the concept of the BIG Plastic Debate even further to offer a holistic view of packaging and climate change, reflecting the fact that the conversation needs to be broader than just plastic. “With the Government’s pledge to achieve net-zero carbon output by 2050, we want to address consumer’s plastic-phobic mentality and discuss how brands can produce truly eco-friendly packaging that can be easily composted, recycled, or reused to have a positive impact on our environment and carbon footprint.”

ME‌Printer December 2019

Leading industry experts from some of the UK’s most respected authorities will come together on the Ecopack Stage at Packaging Innovations 2020 to debate one of the industry’s hottest topics – sustainability. The BIG Carbon Debate, which has evolved from the show’s hugely popular BIG Plastic Debate feature, will continue to move the conversation forward by unpicking the challenges of creating packaging that is truly eco-friendly throughout its entire lifecycle, instead of focussing solely on plastic and its alternatives. The debate will take place across both days of the event, which returns to Birmingham’s NEC on 26 & 27 February. Kicking off day one will be the Ecopack Challenge which returns in association with Marks & Spencer. The Dragon’s Den style session will see six shortlisted companies showcase their eco-friendly packaging solutions and demonstrate why they should be voted best in show by an expert panel and the audience. The judging process will also see the products tested by the OPRL PREP tool which assesses whether the packaging material can be easily recycled by consumers. Winners will be awarded the opportunity to develop their packaging concept with the retail giant. The topic of convenience vs sustainability will then be put under the microscope as a panel of experts discuss how brands can encourage consumers to play their

United Carton Industries Company (UCIC), a leader in Saudi Arabia’s packaging industry, is achieving a breakthrough advancement in digital print for corrugated packaging with the installation of an EFI Nozomi C18000 six-colour, single-pass LED inkjet printer from Electronics For Imaging, Inc. The new printer will bring exciting opportunities for UCIC to enter new market segments, expand its customer base, and create a competitive advantage in the region. “UCIC’s priority is to meet customer expectations, which are constantly increasing due to ever changing market conditions,” said UCIC President Mohnish Rikhy. “New technologies such as digital printing with EFI’s Nozomi C18000 printer help us meet these demands and stay ahead of the competition.” Founded in 1990, UCIC focuses on high quality corrugated solutions for customized packaging needs – with a capacity of about 400,000 metric tons or 1.2 billion boxes on average per year. The Nozomi C18000 printer will enable UCIC to begin transitioning HD flexo work produced in the company’s five plants in Saudi Arabia to digital. The migration to digital printing will also increase UCIC’s overall pro-

duction capacity for point of sale displays. The Nozomi is especially beneficial in how it will empower UCIC to better handle shorter runs and changing customer demands. UCIC decided to purchase the Nozomi for several reasons: “We were highly impressed with the dual feeding feature of the printer and the three different printing modes,” said UCIC Supply Chain Vice President Ali Jariwala. “We expect the collaboration between UCIC and EFI to be fruitful.” The Nozomi C18000 offers three modes to optimize print quality and ink consumption: PHOTO mode allows matching of over 90% of PANTONE® Colors in six colors with no ink consumption limit, specifically aimed at high-end color reproduction; POP mode reduces the color gamut slightly but delivers the best quality while reducing ink consumption; and ECO mode works with a restricted color range and the lowest possible ink consumption. These print modes allow UCIC to address a wider range of production needs. The 71-inch (1.8-meter) wide EFI Nozomi C18000 prints up to 246 linear feet (75 linear meters) per minute, printing up to 10,000 35x35-inch (890x890-mm) boards per hour two-up. Its single-pass,

piezo inkjet imaging system delivers accurate, high-fidelity color, including excellent, consistent reproduction on solid areas. The Nozomi is also the leading singlepass corrugated production device in terms of power consumption efficiency after having achieved the Fogra ISO 20690 Standard. UCIC’s new printer includes a sixcolor configuration of Genuine EFI Inks (CMYK, orange and violet) for superior-quality, expanded-gamut imaging with matte, satin or glossy finishes. The Nozomi printer is driven by the Fiery® NZ-1000 digital front end (DFE), which provides outstanding print and color quality, with extensive features to make print results truly exceptional. It gives users more ways to automate and manage workflows and flexibly schedule jobs. The Fiery DFE also provides blazing fast performance for cost-effective production on short and long runs, as well as on variable and versioned jobs. The EFI Nozomi C18000 is part of a complete ecosystem for corrugated manufacturing available from EFI, with leading edge inks, Fiery DFE technology and a complete EFI Corrugated Packaging Suite business and production management workflow.

Panopus Meets Demands of Fast-Moving Music World with Drytac SpotOn

Panopus Printing has created two poster projects for The Garage in London - but the fast-moving music world means the colourful ads were only on show for a few days. To meet this demand the local print specialist relied on Drytac SpotOn, a printable media designed specifically for easy removal after even the shortest-term installations. Panopus Printing PRS Ltd was founded in 1997 as a reprographics supplier for the building sector. While it still works with architects and engineers, Panopus felt the effects of

the recession and in 2010 decided to meet increasing customer demand and diversify into large-format vinyl printing, using its HP Latex 315 printer to produce vinyl signs, stickers and lettering. It also provides very high-resolution reproduction services to fine art, fashion, graphic design, interior design and architecture students at London institutions including Central Saint Martins. With such strong links to arts and entertainment, Panopus often works with agencies and promoters, and recently completed two projects advertising new material from Dylan and Dorian Electra. These posters were on display at live music venue The Garage and its sister pub The Grace in Highbury, north London, and by nature were very short-term. "We received a request for vinyl posters that could be removed after two to three days," Rayvin Portelli, Managing Director, Panopus Printing PRS Ltd, comments. "We had previously experimented with Drytac SpotOn using some samples supplied by Antalis and found them ideal for the job - the material was

both put up and taken down easily." SpotOn printable vinyl film is designed for this purpose. It features Drytac's unique 'dot pattern' adhesive that enables easy bubble-free application onto a wide variety of smooth surfaces, even by nonprofessionals, and clean removal at the end of its use. Thanks to the new Flexband, it is literally impossible for a malevolent actor to remove the closure, tamper with the contents, and return the closure to its original condition. UNITED CAPS’ award-winning anti-counterfeiting solutions add even greater levels of reassurance. SAFE-TE’s contamination-free foil-sealed chamber protects the included scoop until use, and an integrated hook keeps the scoop handy for further use. SAFE-TE is offered in the standard blue, green and white UNITED CAPS colours plus a premium gold, which offers the overall look of higher quality and standout shelf appearance that is a growing requirement in Asian markets. Advanced in-mould labelling options further enhance opportunities for brands to differentiate themselves with a large area for IML or engraving. 127 SAFE-TE is available in 127 mm, with a 99 mm solution in the pipeline. Production of SAFE-TE for the Asian market will begin in the company’s brand-new factory in Kulim, Malaysia, in September 2020.

Optimum Signs Installs Kongsberg X24 Digital Cutter from CMYUK Matt Austin has come full circle. The sale was instigated by the need to fulfil a sizeable trade job for a major retail collaboration. This involved applying standard vinyl to 16,000 pre–routed lacquered MDF panels. However, the trade customer developed an issue with its CNC router, and was about to pull

the plug on the project when Matt decided to step in, buy a digital cutter and save the day.
The Kongsberg X24 forms a central hub that ignites fresh ideas and concepts, which importantly attracts new customers. It has also automated many processes saving time and money. For example, Optimum produces 750 signs every three to four months on a constant rollover for one client. This has traditionally taken two and a half to three days to produce, but the X24 has taken this

down to four hours, with an hour and a half of actual operator input. Says Matt: “When we delivered this job for the first time, the comment that immediately came back was had we bought these in from somewhere else? It’s such an amazing machine.”

Two Karibus for Pixcolor

34

French print service provider Pixcolor has purchased two swissQprint roll to roll printers in rapid succession and said farewell to sublimation printing. The main reasons: efficiency, variety of materials and profitability. Pixcolor located in Nancy, France, commissioned its second swissQprint roll to roll printer in late November 2019. The first had already started work just a few weeks before in early October. "Karibu's potential quickly became apparent," explains Frédéric Toupenay, managing director of Pixcolor. He adds: "We've always printed a lot of flexible materials with our Nyala and a sublimation printer, but Karibu brought an instant leap in quality, efficiency and reliability." Hence, the immediate order of a second UV roll to roll printer from swissQprint. "Karibu saves us a lot of time and gives no trouble whatsoever." Pixcolor's customers include trade fair booth builders and shop fitters who are supplied with campaign and decoration elements as well as lettering and displays. Their biggest customer immediately noticed the difference; Karibu

sets the new standard for quality. Extended variety of materials Pixcolor prints miles and miles of banners, various textiles and self-adhesive films. In addition, there is paper, magnetic sheet on rolls and other films. "Of the many printers we've had, none has processed everything as smoothly as Karibu," says Frédéric Toupenay. "Even older rolls of material that choked other machines worked with Karibu." Karibu doesn't distort substrates, while line sharpness and print quality in general are striking. All these were reasons for purchasing the second system. Process stability and efficiency The UV ink that swissQprint developed especially for Karibu is very flexible: stretch frames don't cause stress whitening. Frédéric Toupenay points out problem-free folding in particular: "We fold textiles for shipment and then assemble at the customer's location." No abrasion or creases can be seen. Toupenay also praises the colour fastness: "It stays absolutely constant from the first to the last metre. Many other technologies

have great difficulty with this." Toupenay very much welcomes the ink's GreenGuard Gold certification, especially as this opens doors to new customer segments. The printer's built-in light box runs right alongside the printing area, so the operator can immediately and continuously check backlit prints. Frédéric Toupenay explains: "Should optimisation be necessary, we can act quickly and lose little time or material." Pixcolor uses the Mesh Kit for full bleed printing of permeable media. Thanks to this, the machine stays clean, which in turn saves time. "My staff are happy that they no longer have cleaning to do," smiles Toupenay. Major savings Karibu is highly energy efficient, as Frédéric Toupenay confirms: "Power consumption is massively lower compared to that of a sublimation printer." In addition, Karibu produces hardly any rejects. And then there is cool LED curing, which prevents material shrinkage and ensures registration accuracy with multipart products. "We save a lot of material and have no more complaints," says Toupenay.

InForm Etiketten Gets Future-Ready with Xeikon CX3 For label printer InForm Etiketten, sustainability and protecting the environment have always been a top priority – well before the ‘Fridays for Future’ movement began. It was also a key factor in the decisionmaking process when choosing a new printing technology. The label printer, based in Ansbach, Germany, was looking for a technology that would allow them to increase their production capacity and flexibility, as well as provide a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to production. That is why in 2019, InForm Etiketten invested in a CX3, Xeikon’s flagship product for toner-based digital print. “Digital print is in a league of its own, enabling runs as short as a single unit as well as serial codes, numbering, the addition of addresses and low set-up costs. Today, it also allows high gradients – provided you have a state-ofthe-art toner printer,” explains Dr. Benjamin Rüdt von Collenberg, Chief Operating Officer at InForm Etiketten. The company made a conscious decision in favour of toner-based digital print as opposed to an

inkjet-based solution. Firstly, the label printer is already working with a Xeikon 3300 system, meaning that operators are already familiar with the technology and handling of the machine. Secondly, toner-based digital print delivers a printed image that is closer to offset and of a higher quality than any inkjet solution is currently able to achieve. Thirdly, dry toner can be used on a wide variety of different materials, eliminating the need for pre-treated substrates required in inkjet printing. Another benefit is the fact that the toner is safe and expressly suitable for printing labels for the food industry, which represents a large part of InForm’s customer base. The ever-decreasing lot sizes in label printing were a further reason for strengthening the company’s digital capabilities. The short set-up times enable InForm Etiketten to fulfil the demand for short, personalised runs in an economically viable way. InForm Etiketten was founded in 1991 and employs 35 staff. The company specialises in sticky and self-adhesive labels for the food and chemical industries, as well

as for wines and spirits. Since not every printing technology is suitable for all types of labels, InForm Etiketten uses a wide range of equipment, comprising all required technologies including offset, book and digital print. This means that the right machine is always on hand for any application. For its visually sophisticated finishing of labels for wines and spirits, the company has already won a number of awards, most recently at Labelexpo 2019 in Brussels. “Every industry has its own specifications, which play a vital role in the design and production of high-quality labels and which we adapt to individually. The chemical industry places great emphasis on resistance and adhesive characteristics, whereas the food sector focuses on migration, conformity, sustainability and high image quality. Labels for wines and luxury spirits are design objects, required to carry emotions through high-quality finishing. We have the right attitude and the right technology, particularly with digital print,” notes Dr. Benjamin Rüdt von Collenberg.

These labels are known as printed labels. In-

formation printed directly on the container of the product can also be considered as printed labeling. Printed labeling is used to identify products and to avoid counterfeiting of products and maintain credibility. They are also essential for creating brand identity and impart useful information to consumers. By Type, In-mold Label will have considerable demand during the estimate period as they are prepared by plastic films printed with a variety of printing techniques. The film is cut to provide the necessary outline of the label. The label is located in the mold being used for the industrialized of the container. In-mold labelling results in no post-labelling process, thus saving time and work. By Geography, Asia Pacific region is going to have a lucrative growth during the forecast period in emerging economies such as China, India, and Indonesia due to the incorporation of the digital technology with the existing label printing technique. It is bound to fetch a massive change to all the small scale as well as large scale sector.

World Industrial Packaging to be Worth $66 Billion by 2024

38

In 2018, the world produced about $36 trillion worth of manufactured goods, almost all of which was packaged, protected and shipped in some form of industrial packaging. The latest dedicated market investigation into this sector by Smithers – The Future of Industrial Packaging to 2024 – tracks how value of these formats will reach nearly $66 billion in 2024, growing from an estimated $56.1 billion in 2019. This is equivalent to a 3.2% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) across those five years. Industrial packaging products and many key end uses are quite mature, and innovations are generally evolutionary and relatively infrequent. The key formats examined in the latest Smithers study are: • Metal, plastic and fibre drums • Rigid and flexible intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) • Paper, plastic and multi-layer composite shipping sacks • Metal and plastic pails • Rigid crates, bins and boxes, typically made from wood, metal or plastic. Growth in physical volumes and value generated by the sector are strongly dependent upon the

overall level of global and regional economic health, international trade, and manufacturing activity. Direct innovation in industrial packaging tends to originate with raw materials suppliers, especially with plastics materials for drums, pails and rigid IBCs. Sacks remain the most valuable industrial packaging format – worth just of a quarter of the market in 2018. Use of sacks is forecast below the market average however, with the greatest new demand coming for IBCs and drums. Chemicals & pharmaceuticals remains the largest end-use segment for the global industrial packaging industry – formats for these products will be worth $19.2 billion in 2019. It will also be the fastest growing across the next five years. By 2024, sales into this market will be worth more than the three next largest industrial packaging enduses: food & beverages; building & construction; and agriculture & horticulture, combined. Smithers’ analysis identifies that over the period 2019-2024, the following specific factors will be key to shaping the use of industrial packaging and selection of formats;

alongside general economic shifts:

Sustainability Reducing environmental impact is a pressing concern across the packaging industry. For industrial packaging the pressure is less pronounced than in primary packs that consumers actually handle and dispose of. Furthermore economic pressures mean much industrial packaging is already re-used either directly or via reconditioning. Smithers data shows that in 2019 31.2% of steel drums, and 20% of plastic drums, are reconditioned for re-use. There are further steps industrial packagers can make towards contributing to a green world. These focus principally on: • Reducing the amount of packaging material required to ship a unit of product • Recovering, reusing or recycling packs. Pack downgauging also has the advantage of saving on raw material costs for the packaging producer. Improvements in polymers’ properties have allowed substantial reduction in the amount of resin required to make a standard 225-li-

tre plastic drum and in plastic and multiwall paper sacks, for example. Re-use of industrial packaging directly favours certain formats – specifically IBCs, metal and plastic drums, and crates/bins. The price of a new drum or IBC, coupled with its durability and ruggedness, and the relative ease with which it may be cleaned, facilitates recovery and reuse. Global industrial packaging leaders, like Greif, Mauser and Schütz, provide collection, reconditioning, and recycling services; as do numerous local and regional players. Though there is scope to expand these. Further impetus for more sustainable industrial packaging is being supplied by legislative initiatives around packaging waste – especially in the EU. Current EU regulations establish timetables and goals for the reduction or elimination of various categories of packaging wastes. The time horizon for these goals is generally 2030, although many details of execution and timing have not yet been established.

Safe-Shipping Regulations Regulations that impact producers and users of industrial packaging address two areas of primary concern: regulations aimed at promoting sustainable packaging solutions (see above), and regulations aimed at providing safer transport of dangerous goods. The latter will evolve across the next

five years within the scope of existing frameworks, such as the UN’s Orange Book of Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. These will coordinate with local and sector-specific legislation to promote more seamless international trade.

Smart Logistics More sophisticated and affordable electronic sensor and communications technologies, combined with management information software and integration services is allowing for more sophisticated management of shipments in real time. Simultaneously authorities and brand owners in pharmaceutical and food industries are demanding greater transparency to guarantee the safety of bulk shipped goods – for example, monitoring of temperature versus time exposure of sensitive, high-value shipments – fresh fish and seafood, certain dairy products. These smart packaging systems are expected to spread rapidly across the forecast period, to monitor and protect high-value and sensitive shipments in specific industries. Smart logistics concepts are unlikely to change fundamentally the design or function of existing industrial packaging formats however; though there will be greater demand for machine readable labelling, integrated RF antennas, and monitoring circuitry. This rollout will significantly increase the

overall value added by logistics functions.

Material Innovation Polymer suppliers continue to innovate to deliver incremental improvements to materials sold for use in existing industrial packaging formats. Current improvements are manifest in the development of blow-moulding grades of highdensity polyethylene (HDPE) plastic resins to provide greater strength, rigidity, and greater resistance to impacts or abrasion. Fabricators may use such improvements to provide safer plastic drums and IBC bottles for transporting hazardous goods, or to offer lightweighting gains. Similarly grades of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linearLDPE are being engineered to provide greater puncture resistance and tensile modulus to enable downgauging in shipping sacks. And both LDPE and HDPE grades are being produced that have superior resistance to degradation and stress cracking from exposure to materials inside industrial packaging. Another area of research is multilayer structures to build plastic drums and rigid IBCs bottles in particular. The goal is to provide a barrier to the diffusion of product molecules or gases through the walls of the container. Similarly constructed barrier films may be formed into removable, disposable liners for drums and IBCs.

Five Ways Packaging Can Make an Impact on Social Media For marketers the online world of social media presents an increasingly compelling space to connect with and sell their products. This landscape presents new challenges as well as opportunities, and needs to be integrated with the more conventional elements of brand strategies – including printed packaging. In an exclusive new market report, Smithers surveys how it is affecting the use and supply of packaging. This includes analysis of how packaging companies can innovate to meet current and future end-user demands to remain relevant and bolster brand owners’ presence in social media channels. In particular social media presents a free and trusted means of marketing for products and packaging that meet the challenge most successfully. Smithers Pira’s analysis identifies the following fives key factors for the packaging industry to consider in navigating the social media space:

#unboxing

ME‌Printer December 2019

Experience packaging – in which the act of opening the pack is viewed by the consumer as part of the overall product experi-

40

ence – is growing. Websites, like YouTube or shares on social media platforms, have created a new forum experience via the unboxing phenomena, with video bloggers (vloggers) generating an audience for videos showing them unpacking a product. The first unboxing video was posted in 2006. In 2018 YouTube users were uploading the equivalent of 6.5 years of unboxing footage per annum, often via specific channels, with dedicated channels like Unbox Therapy having of 14.5 million subscribers. Around 37% of online shoppers had watched an unboxing video in 2017 according to Dotcom Distribution. And 28% claimed to have shared an image or video of a product on social media prior to opening it. For younger shoppers this trend is most pronounced – over 58% of Millennials (aged 25-38) have watched an unboxing video, and almost 80% of consumers from Generation Z (aged 24 and under). This trend is most pronounced for goods like consumer electronics, especially smartphones; footwear, personal care, and other luxury items. For the packaging designer

the challenge is to create an experience that can hold a viewer’s attention for a 2-4 minute video. This includes the use of luxury materials; sensory experiences, including visual, tactile and even olfactory effects; and innovative designs. For a packaging converter the priority is to create a narrative with a design in several steps that leads to the eventual unwrapping of the final product. This requires an integrated approach towards an established goal with minor components leading to an eventual Wow moment at the final unveiling, with the product and packaging shown in a single Instagram-shareable image. The future imperative here is to continue to innovate in the design phase to present unboxing hosts with new subjects to engage their audiences with; as well as ensuring these align with an individual product’s persona.

#sustainablevalues Social media sharing presents risks to brands and packaging as well. In particular it gives a public medium to post critical reviews of products or packaging that fails to match

#newbusinessmodels The Internet has created a boom for smaller businesses selling bespoke goods via e-commerce channels, with page likes and recommendations shared by customers via social media much faster than conventional word of mouth. These smaller businesses demand bespoke packaging that preserves these core values, as well as being available at short notice and in much smaller order numbers. For packaging suppliers who can supply these and include features that support this personal connection, the margins can be impressive. Major brands are now following this trend with new business units and integrated services. In May 2019 L’Oreal unveiled its new direct-to-consumer Color&Co hair colouring product. The customer experience starts with a personalised video consultation via Skype or a similar platform. In this his or her complexion, natural hair tone and preferences are discussed, before a recommendation is made. The hair dye and application accessories are then dispatched in an e-commerce corrugated box, including a personalised greeting message and product labels. Interestingly the pack has a more utilitarian feel than much of L’Oreal retail brand packaging, which can help differentiate Color&Co as a product personalised to the end-user.

#influencers Brands have traditionally pursued celebrities and sports stars to promote their goods. On social media there is a new class of individuals who consumer follow – social media influencers. While some of these are celebrities in their own right, many owe their profile and influence solely to the activities in social media channels. The individuals have the greatest pull with younger female consumers, for products like clothing and personal care items. Research has shown that compared to other digital marketing tactics, influencer marketing can deliver a return on investment ten times higher. Influencers can promote a brand in a number of ways from photos or videos promoting a product, or becoming a named

brand ambassador; to the use of specific hashtags to spread interest in a product. They can also leverage their network with other social media influencers to rapidly expand a brand’s social media profile. For this to happen effectively branded packaging has to be photogenic enough to capture interest in a single photo and align with the persona of the social media influencers. Brands are now regularly sending out personalised packs to targeted social media figures in the hope of gaining a feature on their news feed. This type of personal connection can be made by using digital print systems to add individual messages to packaging.

#counterfeiting The explosion of e-commerce has been a boon for counterfeiters of goods, presenting an easily accessible sales channel that crosses enforcement boundaries with ease. Counterfeiters are increasingly using social media – Facebook, Instagram, and WeChat – as a mean to sell fake or grey market goods. While many buyers are aware of the dubious origin of goods bought in this way at a discount price, some are not. Thus there needs to be a means for the customer to verify the authenticity of a good they have purchased, without normal retail cues. In the brand protection industry a major trend is toward the development of authentication platforms that use a consumer’s own smartphone. These are typically based on familiar and easy to use QR code linked to a company website that verifies a product is genuine. The simplicity of the QR code means it is very easy for a competent counterfeiter to copy – indeed it is easier than most standard materials or brand graphics. Hence there is a trend to integrate holographic or other dedicated anti-counterfeiting materials into QR codes. This simultaneously requires the evolution of dedicated smartphone software that can verify these features. Once a fake good is detected, social media does provide a ready medium for the consumer to take action either themselves or by contacting the brand users online marketing team.

their expectations. Critically this can be done much more easily than conventional means of lodging a complaint such as sending an email, writing a letter, or returning it to a retail store. The most salient example of this trend has centred around over use of protective packaging in particular. Environmental NGOs are fluent in the use of social media to publicise their message and it also presents the opportunity for users to become activists in their own right. For example, the Instagram account pointless_packaging has over 31,000 followers and has spawned a series of imitators. This trend affects both retail and e-commerce packaging, but as the leading global online seller Amazon has been in particular a target for these campaigns. In response the firm has invested directly in more sustainable solutions. One major step has been to move away from standard size corrugated boxes to fit-to-product corrugated board concepts. It has been estimated that half of deliveries using a standard 0201 box with void-fill material ships up to 55% empty space. The concept of creating a box around a shipment, which could contain one or more products of various shapes and sizes, is gaining traction and a number of systems are on the market – including major packaging names such as DS Smith, Stora Enso, and WestRock. These machines can be upgraded to automatically measure and optimise the packaging solution for each individual order, giving time and cost savings. In May 2019 Amazon reported it was investing in CartonWrap 1000 equipment from Italy’s CMC Machinery at 55 of its distribution centres across the US. These are reported to be up to 5 times faster than a human operator and could replace the need for 24 workers at each of these facilities. Another option in e-commerce channels is to use die-cut corrugated interior components to hold the goods under shipment. Digital cutting equipment can produce these fixtures without the need for skilled labour, and the overall effect can contribute the final presentation to the customer.

Ancillary Packaging Equipment Market Size Forecast to 2028

42

In recent years, there has been an increase in the usage of automation in packaging. This gradual upsurge has increased the demand for end-of-line machines with ancillary packaging equipment. Ancillary packaging equipment is a type of end-of-line machine which provides all packaging features such as palletizing, packing, sealing, and wrapping in a single process. Ancillary packaging equipment are mostly integrated systems where all the operations or processes are linked by using simulation software. Ancillary packaging equipment can be used in several end-use industries like food & beverages, pharmaceuticals, automotive, electronics & electrical, personal care & cosmetics, etc. Due to rapidly changing consumer preference in food & beverage end use, the customized ancillary packaging equipment with high flexibility

is preferred. Ancillary packaging equipment are mainly used for bakery & confectionary, dairy, and ready-to-eat food segments in food & beverages end-use. All these factors have positively impacted the ancillary packaging equipment market during the forecast period. There has been a shift towards incorporating robotics in ancillary packaging equipment. Robotic installation in ancillary packaging equipment offers high-speed efficiency and reduces manual agility of product picking, packing, and palletizing. In addition, ancillary packaging equipment facilitates equipment efficiency at low operational costs and impressive returns on investment. Ancillary packaging equipment can be more efficient in handling lightweight packaging. The robots used in ancillary packaging equipment are likely to cause less package damage as compared

to conventional packaging methods. In November 2014, ProMach introduced MasterPal robotic ancillary packaging equipment which is a palletizing and de-palletizing system. This new robotic system sustains any type of load, with an increase in system speed by 10% and cost savings by 15%. In August 2015, Combi Packaging Systems LLC, in collaboration with Motion Control Robotics, Inc., launched ErgoPakPal – a robotic ancillary packaging equipment for complete end-of-line packaging operations. Furthermore, companies operating in the packaging machinery market are continuously pushing for customized integration in their lines that offer the desired output in a complete line such as ancillary packaging equipment. However, ancillary packaging equipment market is hindered due to high cost of production.

10 Industry Changes That Make Me Grateful Written by Heidi Tolliver-Walker, Industry Analyst

6. You aren’t tied to the office. Nearly everything we need to do for work, many of us can do from our phones. Yes, that means I get to work on my vacation, too, but the visibility into everything from sales to production management in a mobile environment also provides a level of flexibility none of us had “back when.” This has a lot of benefits, but for me, it means that it is easier to maintain my work-home balance. 7. More creativity. With the vast array of channels and marketing tools, marketers have unbelievable creativity at their fingertips. Stunningly beautiful and creative pieces campaigns have been produced for years, but they were prohibitively expensive. Even 10 years ago, who thought you would be able to go online and buy pop-up pieces with interactive elements for super short runs cost-effectively? Or produce marketing pieces with dimensional printing in which a leaf feels like a leaf and a football feels like a football? 8. Accessible education. The vast library of information available to every one of us at any moment of

the day is astounding. Whether it’s a webinar, detailed market research, a case study library, or free templates for creating customer personas, whatever resource you need, it’s probably available free or low-cost somewhere. Just the amount of free market research alone is a sea change. 9. The industry is getting younger. There has long been a concern about the aging of the industry, but with printing become a high-tech sport, along with the integration of things like digital and social media channels, augmented reality, and retargeting, it’s becoming more attractive to a younger generation. This brings new energy and new creativity to the industry, as well. 10. The industry is getting greener. Not only is the production technology inherently cleaner, but “green” processes are easier, too. Whether it’s the use of alternative energy or green design, we are seeing printing companies leading the way to a more sustainable and earthfriendly business and production models. That gets us started. Now, over to you. What are you grateful for?

ME‌Printer December 2019

In this season of gratitude and giving, I’ve been thinking about things in this industry for which I’m grateful. I started in the printing industry in 1995, and like many of you, I’ve seen a lot of change. Here is a high-level (and sometimes low-level) look at some of the really neat things I’ve gotten to be part of. Please add your own in the comments! 1. Industry never stops changing. It’s hard to get bored in an industry changing as quickly as this one. When I started, it was all ink and iron. Now a print shop can have offset, toner, high-speed inkjet, digital wide-format, and dimensional printing all in the same shop. It just makes you sit back and say, “Wow!” 2. Processes keep getting better. Remember those days when the big discussion was whether tonerbased printing was of sufficient quality to move beyond “pleasing color”? Or we couldn’t “distribute and print” because technology, workflows, and color standards couldn’t provide the consistency and predictability required? Today, we get excited about finding places to make incremental changes because the basics are, well, just that good. 3. Smaller phone bills. Just the other day, I ran across a box with my tax prep documents from the mid 1990s. My phone bill looked like an old J. C. Penney catalog, and the bottom line number? Ouch! Good riddance to paying by the minute. Don’t miss those days at all. 4. Email instead of fax machines. Sure, we still need fax machines for some things, but another thing I don’t miss is the brrrrrrr-wweeet! of an incoming fax waking me up at 3 a.m. This isn’t an issue for the average print shop, but for those of us working in home offices, it’s a welcome change. 5. Mail is more interesting. With full, glossy color, variable data, more interesting substrates, interactive elements, and print-tomobile tools, it’s more fun to go to the mailbox than it used to be.

While large players in the market are entering into strategic acquisitions of local players to enhance their regional presence, small players are observed selling their products via multiple stores in a particular region to widen their customer outreach.

Effective Sales Training Starts with Strategy Written by Karen Kimerer, Director of InfoTrends’ Business Development Strategies A well-trained sales team is the lynchpin to the success of your business growth. Print service providers (PSPs) of all sizes are investing in sales training to refine the skills of their brand ambassadors, but they are often puzzled when this investment fails to move the needle. While many things could be to blame, the failure to improve sales is often the result of the PSP’s strategy—or lack thereof.

The Opportunity

The underlying goal of every PSP is centered on building a profitable business. When business owners fail to achieve the next level of growth, they often rely on sales training opportunities to motivate all of their salespeople—regardless of whether they’re newbies or seasoned professionals. Sales training can make it easier for personnel to find new prospects and gain more wallet share from current customers. The goal and hope at the conclusion of the training event is that the salespeople will pick up an idea, take it into the field, and close business deals that they wouldn’t have prior to their training. Although achieving this goal is certainly possible, making the investment can be an expensive gamble given the time, resources, and cost of good sales training. To pave the path toward predictable sales improvement, it is important to consider three key components that surround all good sales training efforts: 1. Strategy 2. Sales Process 3. Accountability

Strategy

Sales Process

Once the big picture has become clear, you’re one step closer to optimizing an investment in sales training. Remember that the power of your strategy will accelerate with a well-defined sales process. While many sales training efforts come equipped with an established process that should be followed, that process might not align to the needs of your buyers. Take the time to inspect each step and the subsequent activities to ensure that they match up with your buyers’ unique journey. PSPs that operate without a welldefined sales process—one that the sales team can articulate in unison—place an unnecessary burden on the sales training investment. Any investments will simply be falling into a money pit. In short, the approach to every sales opportunity should directly coincide with the results achieved. Did you earn the business or lose the opportunity? The efforts to move the prospect through to the process and successfully close the business should be supported by the skills applied at each step and activity. If you’re investing in sales training to help with your win rates, for example, it’s critical to understand where in the process the opportunity stalls or at what point you learn the buyer selected a competitor. The value of a good sales process cannot be underestimated!

Accountability

One of the biggest blunders that businesses make when investing in sales training is not establishing an accountability program that picks up where the training left off. Research has consistently shown that any knowledge gained will be lost within days of delivery without a system to reinforce the skills practiced during sales training. Many of the exercises and efforts applied during the sales training process may feel a bit like learning a foreign language. An accountability plan makes it easier for busy sales professionals to apply what they’ve learned rather than taking the easy way out and reverting to the behaviors they’re most comfortable with. Much like your sales process, an accountability plan sets clear expectations and reinforces the importance of the training investment and the goals that it hopes to achieve.

The Bottom Line

Sales organizations are always seeking ways to improve their overall business performance. At the end of the day, well-trained sales professionals can provide a very strong competitive advantage. When your purpose is clear, your process to engage with prospects and customers will be well-organized and understood. Sales training is one of the best investments you can make, so make the commitment and employ a culture of accountability!

ME‌Printer December 2019

If you don’t have a well-defined organizational strategy, it’s pointless to invest in sales training. A clear and consistent vision for your business—one that everyone in your company (particularly the salespeople!) can articulate—is vital. Do they see what you see? Ensuring that everyone has the same vision can remove many of the bar-

riers to success. Do the activities of your sales team, align to the overall vision? Think about the behaviors that you’re hoping to drive, and be specific about what you want your salespeople to accomplish. Next, seek answers to where you and your team should place the most effort and focus. Develop an understanding of the markets and industries that make the most sense for your business, and provide direction on the products, services, and solutions that ensure those opportunities.
