Ydych chi am glywed mwy am y gwaith sy’n cael ei wneud i gryfhau’r Gymraeg yn eich ardal chi? Hoffech chi wneud mwy i gyfrannu at y gwaith hwnnw? Mae’r proffil hwn yma i’ch helpu i ddod o hyd i fwy o wybodaeth am waith y Mentrau Iaith.

Mae’r proffil yn dangos sut mae’r Mentrau Iaith yn mynd ati i drefnu prosiectau sy’n hyrwyddo’r Gymraeg, a sut gallech chi helpu’r Fenter Iaith i gefnogi’r Gymraeg yn eich ardal chi.

Mae hefyd yn cynnig gwybodaeth am y cymorth sydd ar gael i helpu unigolion, teuluoedd, cymunedau a busnesau i wneud mwy o ddefnydd o’r Gymraeg.

Mae’r proffil hwn yn rhoi cyflwyniad i’r ystod o brosiectau sydd ar gael gan y Mentrau Iaith i ddefnyddio’r Gymraeg ar hyd a lled Cymru, ac mae’n seiliedig ar wybodaeth a ddarparwyd gan y Mentrau Iaith unigol.

Gan fod pob Menter a phob ardal yn wahanol, dylid gwirio’n fanwl pa brosiectau sy’n weithredol yn eich ardal chi. Mae’r cyfleoedd yn newid yn gyson, yn unol ag anghenion lleol a nifer o ffactorau eraill, a dylid cysylltu â’ch Menter Iaith leol am yr wybodaeth ddiweddaraf – mae’r holl fanylion cyswllt ar gael ar wefan Mentrau Iaith Cymru – www.mentrauiaith.cymru Mae’r wybodaeth yn y proffil hwn yn gywir ar adeg mynd i’r wasg (Tachwedd 2016).

Beth yw Menter Iaith?

Y Mentrau Iaith yw pwynt cyswllt cyntaf cymunedau Cymru â phob math o faterion sy’n ymwneud â’r Gymraeg. Maent yn cynnig cyfleoedd i dros 160,000 o bobl ddysgu, byw a mwynhau’r iaith. Mae 23 o Fentrau Iaith yn weithredol yng Nghymru.

Mae’r Mentrau Iaith yn fudiadau cymunedol, gwirfoddol, sy’n amrywio o ran maint ac adnoddau ond yn rhannu’r nod o gefnogi a chynyddu nifer y siaradwyr Cymraeg, yn ogystal â chynyddu’r nifer sy’n defnyddio’r Gymraeg yn eu bywydau bob dydd.

Mae’r gwaith yn amrywio o Fenter i Fenter ac yn cynnwys y meysydd canlynol:

Sefydlwyd y Fenter Iaith gyntaf yng Nghwm Gwendraeth, chwarter canrif yn ôl, yn 1991, yn dilyn galwadau gan gymunedau’r ardal leol am gryfhau’r gweithgarwch cymunedol Cymraeg.

Bellach, mae 23 o Fentrau Iaith yn bodoli, sy’n gwasanaethu pob cwr o Gymru, yn ogystal â dwy Fenter sy’n gweithredu fel prosiectau mewn ardaloedd penodol (Bangor a Phatagonia).

Mae’r Mentrau Iaith yn fudiadau cymunedol annibynnol, sy’n gweithredu o’r gwaelod i fyny, ac mae’r model unigryw i Gymru yn ennyn diddordeb ar draws y byd. Dyma linell amser datblygiad y Mentrau Iaith o 1991 hyd heddiw.

Yn ystod y blynyddoedd cychwynnol, bu rhai o’r Mentrau Iaith cyntaf yn helpu ardaloedd eraill i sefydlu eu Mentrau eu hunain, a hynny drwy rannu gwybodaeth a phrofiadau ymysg staff a gwirfoddolwyr. Yn 1999, cafodd Mentrau Iaith Cymru ei sefydlu fel corff cenedlaethol i gefnogi’r Mentrau lleol, ac i sicrhau llwyfan i rannu arferion da a thrafod ar lefel genedlaethol.

Y Mentrau’n mentro Ymgyrch y Bêl Ym mis Mai a mis Mehefin 2016, bu’r Mentrau Iaith yn cydweithio â Chymdeithas Bêl-droed Cymru mewn ymgyrch arbennig i gasglu dros 20,000 o negeseuon Cymraeg ar beli anferth, i gefnogi’r tîm cenedlaethol ym Mhencampwriaeth Ewro 2016.

Magi Ann – nifer y lawrlwythiadau Mae apiau Magi Ann, a ddatblygwyd gan Fenter Iaith Sir y Fflint, yn adnodd i rieni ddarllen straeon Cymraeg gyda’u plant, ac mae bellach wedi cael ei lawrlwytho gan dros 50,000 o bobl.

Llwyddodd y Mentrau Iaith i ymgysylltu â dros 140,000 o bobl trwy’r ymgyrch hon.

Ras yr Iaith Yn 2016, gyda chefnogaeth y Mentrau Iaith, roedd Ras yr Iaith wedi ehangu i fod yn ras genedlaethol a deithiodd o Fangor yng Ngwynedd i Landeilo yn Sir Gaerfyrddin. Codwyd dros £15,000 at brosiectau cymunedol sy’n cefnogi’r defnydd o’r Gymraeg.

Gwerth Economaidd y Mentrau Mae ymchwil ddiweddar i werth economaidd Menter Caerdydd yn dangos ei bod wedi cyfrannu £1.9 miliwn i economi’r brifddinas yn 2014/15. Ochr yn ochr â hyn, mae ymchwil debyg ym Merthyr Tudful wedi dangos bod Menter Iaith Merthyr Tudful a Chanolfan Soar wedi cyfrannu £1.3 miliwn i’r economi leol.

Hannah Roberts – Dysgwr y Flwyddyn Hannah Roberts, sy’n gweithio fel Swyddog Datblygu Cymunedol i Fenter Iaith Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen a Mynwy, a enillodd wobr Dysgwr y Flwyddyn 2016, a hynny am ei brwdfrydedd yn dysgu ac yn hyrwyddo’r Gymraeg yng Nghymoedd Gwent a Mynwy.

Y Farchnad Lafur Gymraeg Mae Menter Iaith Conwy wedi arwain prosiect traws-sirol sy’n datblygu cymwysterau awyr agored gyda ffocws penodol ar sgiliau Cymraeg.

O weithio gyda’r sector awyr agored i hyfforddi dros 200 o siaradwyr Cymraeg yn y maes, maent wedi llwyddo i gynyddu canran y gweithlu yn y gogledd-orllewin (Gwynedd, Môn a Chonwy) a all hyfforddi trwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg o 5% i 25%.

Dathlu’r gwaith: Profi’r effaith

Arloesi i gryfhau’r Gymraeg

Yn genedlaethol, mae’r Mentrau yn cynnal dros 300 o swyddi, yn ogystal â swyddi rhan-amser a chyfleoedd achlysurol eraill ar ben hynny. Mae’r Mentrau yn gweithio gydag oddeutu 1,000 o wirfoddolwyr ac yn cynnal dros 4,700 o weithgareddau bob blwyddyn, gyda 160,000 o bobl yn cymryd rhan.

Mae’r Mentrau Iaith yn flaengar wrth edrych am gyfleoedd i ddatblygu prosiectau newydd mewn ymateb i anghenion ein cymunedau.

Maent hefyd bob tro’n awyddus i ddatblygu a phroffesiynoli eu gwaith, ac mae’r Mentrau’n rhan o gynllun cenedlaethol newydd, Mentro Mwy, i sicrhau gwasanaethau o ansawdd cyson ar hyd a lled y wlad.

Yn genedlaethol, mae’r Mentrau yn denu dros £6.4m y flwyddyn gan ffynonellau amrywiol, yn cynnwys grantiau Llywodraeth Cymru, grantiau eraill, megis y Loteri a chyllid yr UE, a thrwy gytundebau ag Awdurdodau Lleol a chyrff eraill i ddarparu gwasanaethau amrywiol. Mae’r holl gyllid yn cael ei fuddsoddi yn ein cymunedau, a hynny trwy gynnal swyddi, gwasanaethau a chyfleoedd i gefnogi pobl i ddefnyddio’r Gymraeg ym mhob agwedd ar fywyd.

Mae’r Academi Arweinyddiaeth Gymunedol yn cynnig cwrs sy’n datblygu capasiti a sgiliau arweinyddiaeth o fewn y gymuned. Mae’r Academi yn sicrhau cyswllt cyson a go iawn rhwng myfyrwyr a’u cymunedau, gan anelu at gynyddu hyder unigolion i weithredu’n bositif yn eu cymuned.

Mae’r Academi yn hyfforddi oedolion ifanc 18-26 oed, gan roi’r cyfle iddyn nhw feithrin sgiliau arweinyddiaeth o fewn eu cymuned a’u cymdogaeth trwy ddilyn cwrs dwys.

Mae’r unigolion hefyd yn cael eu mentora yn ystod y flwyddyn. Nod y prosiect yw cynyddu gallu lleol i sicrhau cymdogaethau Cymraeg a chymunedau dwyieithog cynaliadwy yng Ngheredigion, dan nawdd y Fenter Iaith leol, Cered.

Profi Nod cynllun Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr, Profi, yw gwella sgiliau byd gwaith 750 o bobl ifanc yng ngorllewin Sir Gâr a de Ceredigion.

Mae’r cynllun yn cynnig cyfleoedd lleoliad gwaith i bobl ifanc 16-18 oed, gan gydweithio’n agos â’r trydydd sector, a’r sectorau preifat a chyhoeddus. Mae’r cynllun yn cynnig cyfleoedd i godi dyheadau, cyflawniad a hyder er mwyn cynyddu sgiliau cyflogadwyedd, yn ogystal â chodi ymwybyddiaeth o’r iaith Gymraeg, gyda’r nod o gynyddu’r defnydd o’r Gymraeg yn y gweithle.

Y Siarter Iaith yn y Gymuned Mae nifer o’r Mentrau Iaith, mewn cydweithrediad ag Adrannau Addysg y Cynghorau Sir, yn cefnogi gweithredu Siarter Iaith mewn ysgolion, sef cynllun a sefydlwyd yn wreiddiol gan Hunaniaith yng Ngwynedd.

Mae enghraifft o waith Menter Iaith Môn yn cynnwys hyrwyddo manteision addysg Gymraeg a dwyieithog, rhoi cyngor a gwybodaeth i rieni, hyrwyddo cyrsiau cefnogi’r defnydd o’r Gymraeg i deuluoedd a rhieni, yn ogystal â chreu cyfleoedd cymdeithasol i ddefnyddio’r Gymraeg ymysg plant a phobl ifanc.

Rhoddir pwyslais arbennig ar weithgareddau sy’n cael eu cynnal ar ôl ysgol ac yn ystod y penwythnos, ac mae’r gweithgareddau cymunedol hyn yn creu cyfleoedd ychwanegol i unigolion ac ysgolion feithrin cysylltiadau newydd â’u cymunedau ehangach, ac yn cefnogi a chynyddu defnydd plant, pobl ifanc a theuluoedd o’r Gymraeg.

Mentrau Cymdeithasol Mae’r Mentrau Iaith wedi datblygu arbenigedd dros y blynyddoedd yn sefydlu a datblygu mentrau cymdeithasol annibynnol amrywiol, gyda’r nod o gynnig gwasanaethau perthnasol a chreu incwm preifat i gefnogi’r Gymraeg fel iaith gymunedol.

Mae hyn yn cynnwys agor canolfannau iaith, cynnig gwasanaethau cyfieithu, hyfforddi, cynllunio iaith ac ymgynghori, darparu cynlluniau gofal plant a meithrinfeydd, rhedeg siopau a chaffis cymunedol, yn ogystal â datblygu gwasanaethau gofal cymdeithasol, hamdden ac ieuenctid mewn partneriaeth â chyrff a mudiadau eraill.

Wrth ddatblygu mentrau cymdeithasol cynaliadwy, caiff nifer o swyddi eu creu, ac mae unrhyw warged ariannol yn cael ei ailfuddsoddi’n lleol, gan effeithio’n gadarnhaol ar y Gymraeg, y gymuned a’r economi.

Caiff y Mentrau Iaith eu hystyried yn allweddol o ran hyrwyddo cyfleoedd i ddefnyddio a dysgu’r Gymraeg yng Nghymru, ond efallai nad ydych yn ymwybodol o’r ffaith bod nifer ohonynt yn gwmnïau di-elw neu elusennau cofrestredig sy’n dibynnu ar gyfraniadau, nawdd a ffyrdd eraill o godi arian i ddatblygu eu gwaith. Gallwch gyfrannu at ddyfodol y Mentrau mewn sawl ffordd:

Llais y Gwirfoddolwr

Cyfrannu Yn ogystal â datblygu prosiectau o safon drwy gydol y flwyddyn, mae’r Mentrau Iaith hefyd yn gweithio i gynyddu’r cyfleoedd gwaith a gyrfa sydd ar gael drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg. Mae hyn yn cynnwys cefnogi a datblygu sgiliau pobl ifanc sydd â diddordeb ym maes cynllunio ieithyddol, cynnig profiad gwaith amrywiol drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg, a darparu swyddi a rhoi cyfle i bobl ifanc ddatblygu gyrfa yn eu cymunedau lleol.

Helpu gyda Bocsŵn, Theatr Ieuenctid Môn a ‘Mae dy Gymraeg di’n Grêt’ Pam gwirfoddoli?

Fe wnaeth gwirfoddoli i Fenter Iaith Môn wir agor fy llygaid i’r holl weithgareddau sy’n cael eu trefnu mewn cymunedau gwahanol ar draws yr ynys, a hynny i hyrwyddo a chefnogi’r Gymraeg. Dwi’n teimlo bod y Fenter Iaith wir yn gwneud gwahaniaeth o fewn y gymuned, ac roedd arna i eisiau bod yn rhan o’r cyffro hwnnw.

Erbyn hyn, mae Menter Iaith Môn yn golygu llawer imi oherwydd ei bod wedi creu cyfle imi ddatblygu fy sgiliau cyfathrebu, gweithio gydag eraill a datrys problemau. Mae’r Fenter Iaith wedi rhoi’r gallu imi wneud y pethau rwyf yn hoffi eu gwneud, er enghraifft gweithio gyda phlant, dysgu pobl am bwysigrwydd yr iaith Gymraeg, cyfathrebu yn hyderus gyda’r cyhoedd, a llawer mwy.

Rydym yn cynnig rhaglen o brofiad gwaith sydd wedi’i hanelu at ddisgyblion blwyddyn 11, y chweched dosbarth, myfyrwyr mewn prifysgolion, ac unigolion 16 oed a hŷn.

Gallwn gynnig cyfnod o brofiad gwaith mewn meysydd penodol o fewn y Mentrau Iaith, yn dibynnu ar eich diddordeb.

Y cyfle gorau mewn bywyd Mae ‘Babis Dyfri’ yn grŵp sydd wedi’i sefydlu yn ardal Llanymddyfri gan Fenter Bro Dinefwr i gynnig cyfleoedd i rieni a’u babis gwrdd i ddefnyddio a dysgu’r Gymraeg.

Dyma sydd gan un o rieni ‘Babis Dyfri’ i’w ddweud am y cynllun: Dydyn ni ddim yn siarad Cymraeg, ac felly mae sicrhau bod gan ein plant gyfleoedd i ddysgu a chlywed y Gymraeg cyn mynd i’r ysgol gynradd leol yn bwysig i ni.

Dwi wedi bod yn mynd i Babis Dyfri ers iddo gychwyn tua blwyddyn yn ôl. Yn ystod yr amser hwnnw, mae fy merch fach wedi dysgu rhigymau Cymraeg gwahanol ac mae’n gallu trafod y lliwiau a chyfrif yn Gymraeg, a hynny er nad oedd ganddi unrhyw Gymraeg gartref.

Erbyn hyn, rwyf yn annog fy merch i ymarfer ei Chymraeg gyda’i brodyr hŷn, sydd wedi dechrau mynychu’r ysgol gynradd leol, ac rwyf wrth fy modd yn eu clywed yn siarad Cymraeg â’i gilydd.

Mae fy nyled a fy niolch i’r Mentrau Iaith yn fawr.

Mentro mwy Mae’r Mentrau Iaith yn gyrff sy’n tyfu a datblygu’n gyson, a hynny mewn ymateb i anghenion a dyheadau cymunedau Cymru. Er bod pob Menter Iaith yn wahanol ac yn unigryw i adlewyrchu eu hardaloedd, y weledigaeth sy’n clymu’r cyfan yw gweld yr iaith Gymraeg yn datblygu’n iaith gymunedol fyw ym mhob rhan o Gymru.

Byddwn yn parhau i gydweithio â Llywodraeth Cymru a phartneriaid eraill i wireddu’r nod o greu miliwn o siaradwyr Cymraeg erbyn 2050. Mae gan y Mentrau Iaith rôl allweddol yn y gwaith hwn, wrth weithio ar lawr gwlad i gefnogi pobl i ddysgu’r iaith a chynnig cyfleoedd i bobl siarad y Gymraeg yn eu bywydau bob dydd.

The Mentrau Iaith are organisations that are constantly growing and developing, in response to the needs and aspirations of the communities in Wales. Although each Menter Iaith is different and unique, in reflection of its local area, the vision that binds each Menter is one in which the Welsh language develops to be a living community language throughout Wales.

We will continue to work with Welsh Government and other partners to realise our goal of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.

The Mentrau Iaith have a key role to play in this goal, working at grassroots level to support people to learn the language, and providing opportunities for people to speak Welsh in their everyday lives.

During the next period, we will be aiming to develop our way of working, in response to new opportunities to strengthen the language throughout Wales.

To succeed, we will commit to implementing the following actions, ensuring high quality and consistent services and activities to support the language, to a degree that has yet to be seen within the Mentrau Iaith.

ÎÎ To be the first point of contact for the Welsh language for communities in Wales, providing information, referral services, and various activities.

ÎÎ To operate as a key partner in supporting the aim of securing a million Welsh speakers by 2050, and to look to implementing new schemes and services to support individuals to learn and to use the language in their everyday lives.

ÎÎ To conduct research, on a local, regional, crossboundary and national level, into new ways of working in collaboration with each other and with partners, in response to social language needs and political changes.

ÎÎ To establish a mass network of supporters and volunteers for the Mentrau Iaith and the Welsh language in order to implement, support and contribute to projects which promote learning and using the language, thus ensuring local ownership for our work.

ÎÎ To ensure that the Mentrau Iaith provide high quality, consistent services throughout Wales, with the implementation of the Mentro Mwy development programme, which includes the PQASSO quality mark, strengthening customer services, and securing an expected level of services across Wales.

ÎÎ To seek further financial support for the work of the Mentrau from Welsh Government, aiming initially for a minimum of £100,000 for each individual Menter, to enable them to provide services of a consistent level throughout Wales; and to also increase the Mentrau Iaith Cymru contribution to £180,000 once again, in order to secure resilient, practical support for the work of the local Mentrau.

How do you volunteer?

I help with Bocsŵn, Theatr Ieuenctid Môn and ‘Mae dy Gymraeg di’n Grêt’ Why volunteer?

Volunteering for Menter Iaith Môn really opened my eyes to all the activities that are organised in different communities across the island to promote and support the Welsh language. I really feel that the Menter Iaith makes a difference within the community, and I wanted to be part of that excitement.

By now, Menter Iaith Môn means a lot to me as it has provided me with the chance to develop several skills – communication, working with others and problem-solving skills. The Menter has enabled me to do those things that I enjoy doing, for example working with children, teaching people about the importance of the Welsh language, communicating confidently with the public, and much more.

We offer a work experience programme which is aimed at Year 11 pupils, the sixth form, university students, and individuals of 16 years old and over. We can provide a work experience period in specific areas within the Mentrau Iaith, depending on your interest.

If you are interested in language planning and the promotion of the Welsh language, what about getting in touch to see what we can offer? As a rule, the work experience periods last between 5 and 10 days.

The best chance in life ‘Babis Dyfri’ is a group that has been established by Menter Bro Dinefwr in the Llandovery area to provide opportunities for parents and their babies to meet in order to use and learn the Welsh language.

This is what one of the ‘Babis Dyfri’ parents has to say about the scheme: We don’t speak Welsh, so making sure that our children have the opportunity to learn and hear the Welsh language before they start at primary school is important to us.

I have been going to Babis Dyfri since it began about a year ago. During that time, my little girl has learnt various Welsh rhymes, and she can say the names of the colours and count in Welsh, even though she had had no Welsh at home.

By now, I encourage my daughter to practise her Welsh with her older brothers, who have started to attend the local primary school, and it gives me great delight to hear them talking in Welsh to one another.

I owe the Mentrau Iaith a great deal, and thank them very much.

Celebrating the work: Experiencing the impact

Strengthening the language through innovation

Nationally, the Mentrau maintains over 300 jobs, in addition to part-time jobs and other occasional opportunities. The Mentrau work with around 1,000 volunteers, and hold more than 4,700 activities annually, with 160,000 participants taking part.

The Mentrau Iaith are innovative in their search for opportunities to develop new projects in response to community needs. They are also always eager to develop and professionalise their work, and are now part of a new national scheme, Mentro Mwy, to ensure a consistent quality of service throughout Wales.

Nationally, the Mentrau attract more than £6.4m annually from various sources, including grants from Welsh Government, other grants, such as Lottery and EU funding, and through contracts with Local Authorities and other bodies to provide various activities.

The funding is invested in our communities in order to maintain jobs, services and opportunities to support people to use the Welsh language in all aspects of their lives.

Here are some new projects which have been developed recently.

Community Leadership Academy The Community Leadership Academy offers a course to develop capacity and leadership skills within the community. The Academy ensures a regular and real contact between students and their communities, with the aim of increasing confidence in individuals to operate positively within those communities.

The Academy trains young adults aged 18-26 by providing them with the opportunity, via an intensive course, to foster leadership skills within their communities and neighbourhoods.

The individuals are also mentored during the year. The aim of the project is to increase local capacity to maintain sustainable Welsh medium communities and bilingual neighbourhoods in Ceredigion, under the auspices of the local Menter Iaith, Cered.

Profi The aim of the Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr scheme, Profi, is to improve the employment skills of 750 young people in west Carmarthenshire and south Ceredigion.

The scheme offers work placement opportunities for young people aged 16-18, in close collaboration with the third sector, and the private and public sectors. The scheme provides opportunities to raise aspirations, achievement and confidence in order to increase employability skills, and it also raises awareness of the Welsh language, with the aim of increasing the use of the Welsh language in the workplace.

The Language Charter in the Community Several of the Mentrau Iaith, in collaboration with County Council Education Departments, support the implementation of a Language Charter in schools. Originally, the Language Charter was a scheme established by Hunaniaith in Gwynedd.

An example of Menter Iaith Môn’s work includes promoting the benefits of Welsh medium and bilingual education, providing advice and information for parents, promoting courses to support the use of the Welsh language for families and parents, as well as creating social opportunities for the language to be used by children and young people.

Special emphasis is placed on activities held after school and at the weekend, and these community activities create additional opportunities for individuals and schools to foster new links with their wider communities, and to support and increase the use of the language amongst children, young people and families.

Social Enterprises Over the years, the Mentrau Iaith have developed expertise in establishing and developing various independent social enterprises, with the aim of providing relevant services and generating a private income to support the Welsh language as a community language.

This includes establishing language centres, providing translation services, training, language planning and consultation, the provision of childcare schemes and nurseries, operating community cafés and shops, as well as developing social care, leisure and youth services in partnership with other bodies and organisations.

As a result of developing sustainable social enterprises, a number of jobs are created, and any financial surplus is re-invested locally, impacting positively on the Welsh language, the community and the economy.

Mentrau initiatives Ymgyrch y Bêl (The ‘Bale’ Campaign)

Magi Ann – the number of downloads

During May and June 2016, the Mentrau Iaith, in collaboration with the Football Association of Wales, ran a special campaign to gather over 20,000 messages, in Welsh, on giant footballs, to support the national team in the Euro 2016 Championship.

Magi Ann apps, developed by Menter Iaith Sir y Fflint, is a resource that enables parents to read Welsh medium stories with their children. To date, it has been downloaded by more than 50,000 people.

During this campaign, the Mentrau Iaith succeeded in engaging with more than 140,000 people.

Ras yr Iaith (Race for the Welsh language) In 2016, with support from the Mentrau Iaith, Ras yr Iaith expanded to be a national race that started in Bangor in Gwynedd and finished in Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire. It raised more than £15,000 towards community projects which support the use of the Welsh language.

The Economic Value of the Mentrau Recent research into the economic value of Menter Caerdydd has shown that it contributed £1.9 million to the economy of the capital during 2014/15. Alongside this, similar research in Merthyr Tydfil has shown that Menter Iaith Merthyr Tudful and Canolfan Soar have contributed £1.3 million to the local economy.

Hannah Roberts – Welsh Learner of the Year Hannah Roberts, who works as a Community Development Officer for Menter Iaith Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen a Mynwy, won the Welsh Learner of the Year award in 2016 for her enthusiasm in learning and promoting the Welsh language in the Gwent and Monmouth Valleys.

The Welsh Language Labour Market Menter Iaith Conwy has been leading a cross-county project to develop outdoor qualifications which focus specifically on Welsh language skills.

In collaboration with the outdoor sector to train more than 200 Welsh speakers, they have succeeded in increasing the percentage of the workforce in the north-west (Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy), who can offer training through the medium of Welsh, from 5% to 25%.

What is a Menter Iaith?

The Mentrau Iaith are the first point of contact for communities in Wales with regard to various Welsh language related matters.

They provide an opportunity for over 160,000 people to learn, live and enjoy the language.

There are 23 Mentrau Iaith in operation in Wales.

Today, there are 23 Mentrau Iaith in existence, providing a service for every corner of Wales.

There are also two Mentrau that operate as projects in specific areas (Bangor and Patagonia).
