Big Community,

As we reflect on the past fiscal year, our thoughts turn to gratitude for the impact we’ve realized together. This year’s Annual Impact Report is longer than in previous years – and for good reason. We want to illustrate what our work to equip and empower young folks in our community has achieved.

Expanding Reach

Marking a new chapter in our mission to support youth at every stage of their journey, the Big Futures initiative launched with programming designed to support young adults aged 18-24. Through a partnership with Tennessee State University, agency professionals co-developed the College Advancement Program (CAP) — a first in Middle Tennessee. This program provides college students with personalized, one-on-one support and small group mentoring.

Leveraging Feedback

Dedicated to continuous improvement, Big Satisfaction, an initiative aimed at gathering critical feedback on the experiences of our volunteer mentors, kicked off this year. By understanding their perspectives on recruitment, onboarding, matching, and ongoing support, we are able to refine our processes and ensure we provide the highest quality experience for both our Littles and Bigs.

Big Events

Not known for doing small things, events this past year were BIG, creating opportunities for connection and celebration. The Big Appreciation event brought together current and former Bigs, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. The Big Draft, in partnership with the Tennessee Titans, recruited future Bigs and expanded our mentoring network. This year marked the second annual Big Graduation at Geodis Park, where Bigs, families, Board and community members came together to celebrate, more than 100 youth graduating from high school and/or BBBSMT’s mentoring program.

Big Vision

While we celebrate our work together this past year, we are also planning for what’s next. Engaging with our stakeholders, the Board of Directors and staff dedicated significant time to developing a strategic framework to guide the agency’s work over the next three years. This new strategic vision marks a transformative shift in our approach, allowing us to be more responsive as we expand our reach and maintain the highest quality programming. Our strategic framework is built on three key pillars:

1. Community Engagement

We aim to increase both the breadth and depth of community engagement, positioning BBBSMT as a conduit for broader community impact. Our goal is to forge stronger connections and collaborations that enhance our collective efforts.

2. Programming

We seek to strengthen and scale our program offerings, ensuring we provide deeper support for our Bigs and comprehensive support for our Littles. This will enable all current and future Littles to achieve their full potential.

3. Organizational Infrastructure

We are committed to maximizing our strengths to sustain and improve organizational excellence. This involves ensuring we are adequately resourced and well-positioned to adapt and thrive.

As you explore the pages of this report, we hope you are inspired by the stories of our community’s young people and the power of mentoring relationships. BBBSMT IS A LEADER ACROSS THE BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS NETWORK FOR SO MANY REASONS.

They approach innovation with a commitment to adapt to their community and look for ways to improve. Their process of listening, testing, and refining has led to transformations in technology and program options to better serve Black and LGBTQ youth that are being scaled across the network. They are thought leader who show up for peers and are active in a number of national cohorts and training projects. I’m excited to continue to partner with them as we work towards our Big Vision 120.

ANITA AND DESTINY BIG AND LITTLE OF THE YEAR

Meet Big and Little of the year Destiny (Little) and Anita (Big). Destiny and Anita have been matched for more than five years, and their match story is one of inspiration, gratitude, care, and a shared love of charity and community involvement.

Khandi, Destiny’s mother, brought Destiny, age 12, to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee in hopes of providing her daughter with a mentor who would offer encouragement and support. Khandi described Destiny as a curious, funny, and friendly young lady. She also shared that some of Destiny’s strengths are being respectful and determined. Khandi believed that having a mentor would give Destiny tools and resources she needed to be a successful adult.

When Destiny met her Big, Anita, she was extremely shy. However, it didn’t take long for Destiny to open up. The two discussed their love for activities such as getting ice cream, shopping, going to the library, eating Prince’s Hot

Chicken, and attending BBBS hosted events. Not long into their relationship, Destiny and Anita began incorporating their love for community service into their meetups by volunteering at organizations like the Little Pantry and Second Harvest. Volunteering is something the Big and Little always look forward to.

As the relationship matured, Big Sister Anita became a source of inspiration and positive influence that Khandi was looking for. Destiny shared that her Big Sister taught her to stay focused and put her best toward school. Academically, Anita was there to support Destiny by assisting with homework and creating goals through a vision board.

Destiny and Anita’s commitment to one another has enriched both of their lives for the better, landing them as the 2024 Tennessee Match of the Year.

The BBBSMT recruitment process is designed to set each Big up for success.

BBBSMT offers a variety of hands-on training for Bigs, including Mentoring 101, Trauma Informed Care, Cultural Humility, Healthy Boundaries, and Strategies for Connecting with Your Little.

Mentors are also provided ongoing support virtually and in person with professional caseworkers who provide match support.

As Middle Tennessee continues to expand, so does BBBSMT’s commitment to supporting its youth. Next year, the agency is seeking 315 mentors to join the Community of Bigs!

High School Bigs

When young leaders rise, the community thrives! The High School Bigs program provides rising leaders the opportunity to be a mentor. As part of the High School Bigs program, student Bigs receive extensive training in boundary setting, communication skills, and emotional intelligence to build their skills as a mentor.

In Robertson and Rutherford counties, 60 youth were matched as mentors to elementary students. BBBSMT proudly celebrates this accomplishment!

E-Mentoring

This year E-Mentoring provided leadership development, college readiness, and financial coaching to 138 matches.

An additional 40 students took part in group mentoring and received instruction led by BBBSMT staff. This year of tremendous growth has made 2023-24 the largest in the program.

Diego’s story!

In 2017 Diego was enrolled as a Little in the inaugural E-Mentoring program as a student at Antioch High School. While enrolled, he shared his fantastic experience as a Little and expressed that he would like to give back by becoming a Big one day.

Fast-forward to 2024: Diego is now 24 years old, and a Big in the E-Mentoring program. He was recently matched with Little Brother Bawi who shared he wanted a mentor who is calm, strong-minded, and composed. Bawi also expressed interest in starting his own business after he graduates college. Because of their shared passions and goals, Diego, who works for his family’s business, was a clear standout to become Bawi’s Big.

Diego and Bawi share similar personalities, which supports their development of their relationship. Diego’s life experiences complement Bawi’s future aspirations. Through this match, Diego provides Bawi with guidance toward achieving his goal of owning a business in the future.

Diego is excited to ignite the potential of his Little through the power of mentoring.

Littles in the BBBSMT CommunityBased program grow their support network through connecting with a Big who inspires and exposes them to new experiences, people, and perspectives.

This program provides matches with a unique opportunity to share in-person experiences, conversations, and fun activities across Middle Tennessee.

Matches frequently enjoy trips to Centennial Park, Adventure Science Center, and the Frist Art Museum. Matches form long-lasting and deep connections in partnership with the Little’s family. This triple bond between the Little, Big, and family creates an even deeper and stronger foundation for the youth. It is a privilege to partner with families across the community by being a bridge that connects two human beings together.

Sports Buddies Community-Based

Mentoring relationships flourish most when individuals connect over common interests. Sports Buddies provides an environment for Bigs and Littles to connect over their love of sports and physical activity. Twice each month, matches have the pleasure of engaging in fun physical activities or attending highenergy professional and collegiate sporting events. The magic of this program is that it often gives the Bigs and Littles access to new experiences they can enjoy together.

The School-Based program provides Bigs and Littles the opportunity to meet weekly on the Little’s school campus during the school year.

Strong community partnerships are vital for serving youth in schools across Middle Tennessee. The School-Based program provides Bigs and Littles the opportunity to meet weekly on the Little’s school campus during the school year. This year, the BBBSMT School-Based program served youth in 16 schools across three counties. BBBSMT closed out the year by adding two additional school partners — Joelton Elementary School and Preston Taylor Ministries’ Mt. Nebo site — with anticipation of making matches this fall.

In addition to serving 1:1 matches, BBBSMT is partnering with other community organizations to build their ability to provide mentoring. The agency developed a model through which BBBSMT trains and places mentors within a partner organization, increasing both their capacity for service and BBBSMT’s access to diverse communities. This year BBBSMT partnered with Metro Nashville Public Schools to support 60 youth through group mentoring in the Rites of Passage program.

Bigs are in high demand, and at any given time, more than 100 youth are on the waiting list to be matched with a Big who can help ignite their potential. An intentional matching process works to find the best possible match for each Little, which takes time.

Big Cousins, a relatively new program, was created to best serve young folks while they wait to be mentored. This program not only helps youth and families remain engaged during the waiting process, it’s also designed to build self-esteem and provide the skills youth will need to get the most out of the relationship with their Big.

Youth in Big Cousins participate in Mentee Hour to prepare for their relationship with their future Big while also building relationship development tools. Youth are taught how to express their emotions, ask hard questions, and convey their feelings. These sessions empower youth by giving them the ability to use their voice well and be heard with both their future Big and other adults in their lives.

Big Graduation Celebration

The second annual Big Graduation Celebration was a tremendous success! Bigs, Littles, families, and investors were invited to Geodis Park for this aspirational and inspirational celebration of 108 graduating seniors who have successfully completed this chapter of their match relationship.

Those in attendance connected around great food, prizes, and fun activities. In addition to the graduation festivities, guests were treated to an exclusive behindthe-scenes tour of Geodis Park - including the game day tunnel and locker room. They also participated in a special media room simulation, complete with mock interviews and photo ops. The evening culminated with inspirational send-off messages from Jeffery Simmons of the Tennessee Titans and Taylor Washington of the Nashville Soccer Club. It was an honor to celebrate each graduate for this esteemed achievement in their journey!

Special thanks to the support of Deloitte, TDMHSAS, and PFLAG for awarding more than $40,000 in scholarships to nine outstanding graduates.

BBBSMT is committed to ensuring that youth voices are heard. Over the past two years, the Youth Voice and Choice committee, led by two youth who also serve on the agency’s Board of Directors, has supported the agency in its commitment to amplify youth voice in programming, committees, and other key decision-making conversations.

Youth are the experts in their own experience. That’s why BBBSMT is committed to incorporating youth voice into all aspects of the work. As youth are enrolled in a program, agency professionals conduct extensive interviews to assess what a future Little needs and wants from a relationship with a Big. The Little writes their own development plan, which BBBSMT staff and their Big use to make sure the relationship is meeting the Little’s needs. Through regular surveys and conversations, the BBBSMT team evaluates ways to ensure Little’s voice is driving the match. In fact, 92% of Littles report satisfaction with their match.

Community Organizations where BBBSMT Staff Serve

National Mentoring Month

Recognized nationally in January, National Mentoring Month celebrates the power of mentoring. Research shows that 1 in 3 youth are growing up without a mentor. National Mentoring Month helps close the gap by providing a platform to recruit the Bigs needed to serve these youth. The month is focused on increasing youths’ access to quality, trained, and supportive mentors to ignite their potential.

This year, National Mentoring Month provided several opportunities for BBBSMT to deepen its impact in the community by highlighting the importance of mentors for youth. In celebration of the month, Boyle Investment Group provided high traffic advertising opportunities, and more than 40 businesses proudly displayed BBBSMT flyers in their establishments. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and Island Fin Poké generously hosted fundraising nights, and several others provided space for BBBSMT to raise awareness at fun and interactive tabling events.

National Mentoring Month culminated with an inaugural Big Appreciation Celebration honoring and thanking past, present, and future BBBSMT Bigs. Attendees were able to connect and network with other youth advocates. The evening ended with a dynamic panel discussion on the importance of mentorship in the community hosted by Erika Glover (Anchor, WZTV FOX 17), with special guests Jeffery Simmons (Defensive End, Tennessee Titans), Dr. Shanna Jackson (President, Nashville State Community College), and Melissa Hudson-Gant (CEO, BBBSMT).

Big Draft

As part of the NFL Inspire Change initiative, BBBSMT partnered with the Tennessee Titans for the 2024 Big Draft Party hosted at Nissan Stadium. As the

exclusive nonprofit event partner, BBBSMT had an opportunity to raise awareness with 25,000 passionate Titans fans. The agency was delighted to be a part of this spectacular community event!

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

Big Breakfast

The Big Breakfast is BBBSMT’s largest annual fundraiser. Presented by Amazon, the 2023 theme was “Amplifying Youth Voice.” This inspirational event, attended by 1,300 community leaders, present and future, celebrated the impact of the agency and raised $777,000 to help fuel the mission to connect youth with mentors who can ignite their potential.

Local comedian DJ Pryor hosted this year’s breakfast, with a keynote address by Ran Carthon, General Manager of the Tennessee Titans. Youth from the E-Mentoring and CommunityBased programs, along with youth board members, were featured as presenters. It was a powerful morning of celebrating youth voice.

Youth in attendance at the breakfast received the opportunity to attend a group mentoring session facilitated by staff, board members, and company executives. During this session, board members James Hallock and Neema Mehta shared their personal career journeys and the importance of growing your professional network. They gave practical steps and strategies to help the youth increase their networking skills. Through connecting with BBBSMT mentors, these youth gained valuable tools that will help them succeed as future professionals.

Golf for Kids’ Sake

Hosted at Top Golf, the Golf for Kids’ Sake peerto-peer fundraising initiative raised $130,000, a 16% increase over the previous year. Don Kendall, a former Big and member of the Board of Directors, entered five teams on behalf of Development Management Group, inspired five additional companies to participate, and helped raise an additional $4,000 in event donations.

Jackson National Life Insurance Company made Golf for Kids’ Sake one of the company’s pinnacle staff engagement opportunities by matching team donations with a corporate contribution. As the event’s presenting sponsor, they contributed $82,000 in support of BBBSMT’s mission.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is fortunate to have a staff with deep experience. Collectively, the team

represents 184 years of BBBS service, 311 years of nonprofit work, and 203 years of experience in professionally supported youth mentoring.

This year BBBSMT was the recipient of multiple honors. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America presented the agency with a Growth Award in recognition of an increase in matching BIPOC (Black, indigenous, people of color) male volunteers. They also granted Bridget Heary, Manager of Employee Development at BBBSMT, the Margaret Slack Award for Professional Development in recognition of her professionalism and quality of service. Finally, the agency was proud to be named as one of NonProfit Times Best Places to Work based on an anonymous employee satisfaction survey, administered and determined by an outside third party.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee is expanding its reach, deepening impact, and improving service to youth and families. In 2024-25 BBBSMT will increase its service by 12% to serve 885 youth in the community. This year will continue the agency’s commitment to supporting young adults’ academic, financial, and professional success by matching the first College Advancement Program cohort at Tennessee State University in fall 2024 and launching at Nashville State Community College in spring 2025.
