Dr Finian O’Brien MB, BCh, BAO (NUIG), MRCPsych (UK), MSc cognitive psychotherapy (TCD), Dip (Healthcare Management). Consultant Psychiatrist with CMMHS, Senior Lecturer & PhD Fellow with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Mental Health Service

A message from Dr Finian O’Brien, Cavan/Monaghan Mental Health Services There are various HSE services and community / voluntary supports for people who may be experiencing mental health problems. People looking for help in dealing with mental health problems should ideally always discuss these problems with their GP so that they can be assessed for the presence of a clinically significant syndrome (eg depressive illness). This is important because if a person is clinically unwell, they may benefit from a GP-co-ordinated care-plan which may include interventions such as psychotherapy (talking therapy with a trained professional) and medication (if appropriate and if the client agrees). GPs have access to counselling services, psychologists and other professionals such as occupational therapists and social workers, to help people as appropriate. Social support groups are very useful, but a person experiencing a mental health problem may be clinically unwell and may require more help to get better than available in a support group. GPs are the professionals who refer people with depression and other conditions to secondary care mental health services (psychiatry). Referrals to the specialised psychiatry/community mental health team only come through doctor referrals, particularly GPs. People can stay away from getting help because of fear and stigma around mental health. I would say that mental illness is treatable and people’s quality of life can be vastly improved if they seek help appropriately and meaningfully engage with treatment. Only the most severely unwell or distressed people are

admitted to hospital and we strive to treat people in their own homes through our home based treatment team (an alternative to admission). Below is a list of some of the groups that can offer help, but contact your GP if you need more information about specific services.
