Photographic Project 2013-14

Mental Health Ireland

The Photographic Project complements the popular Design a Cover Art Project which MHI has organised annually since 2000 for PostPrimary Schools and Colleges. The aim of each project is to create an awareness of mental health in young people and it is hoped to engage a greater number of students by offering alternative mediums through which to portray positive mental health.

Mental Health Ireland is a national voluntary organisation with 103 local Mental Health Associations (MHAs) and branches throughout the country. The membership includes mental health professionals and lay people who provide care, support and friendship for the mentally ill. MHI aims to promote positive mental health and to actively support persons with a mental illness, their families and carers by identifying their needs and advocating their rights.

Other MHI Mental Health Promotional Programmes for schools: National Public Speaking Project The National Public Speaking Project, organised by Mental Health Ireland (MHI), is one of the most popular events in the school calendar year. This project for teams from senior classes in PostPrimary schools aims to introduce students to public speaking and to promote an awareness and understanding among young people of the causes and effects of mental illness and of the importance of positive mental health. By participating in the Public Speaking Project, it is hoped that attitudes and prejudices usually associated with mental illness will be reduced and even eradicated. The Project is now in its 33rd year as a national event. It was undertaken nationally for the first time during 1981 as one of MHI’s contributions to the International Year of Disabled Persons. Mental Health Matters Resource Pack for 14 - 18 year olds, which is available in all Post-Primary Schools and Colleges. People who are mentally healthy: »» feel good about themselves »» feel comfortable with other people »» are able to meet the demands of life Why should the average young person be concerned about mental illness and know about mental health? Here are just two facts: one person in every three attending the family doctor has a mental health aspect to the medical problem of those who live to 65 – one in nine will spend some time in mental health care As a student it is highly desirable that you should learn as much as you can about the importance of mental health and recognise and deal with causes of stress and other factors leading to mental breakdown. Remember that sometime in your life, you, a member of your family or a friend could become mentally ill and your understanding and help could be of tremendous support. Young Mental Health Ireland Young Mental Health Ireland (YMHI) is an initiative introduced by Mental Health Ireland in 2008, its purpose being to open dialogue with young people and encourage them to influence the thinking of our national organisation on how best to respond to the concerns and issues that young people have regarding positive mental health. MHI regards as important liaising directly with young people and finding out how we can best assist them and how they can help in our organisation’s goal of positive mental health for all.
