THE DEALER

A Passion for the Sea Bader Alyahya

B

ader Alyahya Yachts, founded in 2013 by oil engineer Bader F. Alyahya, has an unusual story. Born of a simple love of the sea and a passion for yachting, what was Mr. Alyahya’s hobby, is now a booming business. It all started by chance when, on a trip to France, a European yacht dealer suggested to his Kuwaiti client that he might like to try his hand at representing luxury yacht brands in Kuwait. The Kuwaiti engineer took up the offer and Bader Alyahya Yachts was established, writes Carla Sommers.

THE DEALER

This year the company will be attending Kuwait Yacht Show with an even more expanded portfolio. All the brands have been chosen personally by Mr. Alyahya, many of which are picked specifically for Kuwait’s growing mid-range (30- 50 foot) market and the waters of the Arabian Gulf where, as he astutely observes, “the waves never get too high”. This means the more stable–and more expensive–big boats are not really needed. Smaller vessels he points out, also offer more privacy, you do not need to set sail with a huge staff and maintenance costs are inevitable, much lower. Careful selection of his brands is imperative he insists. “First, I have to trust and like it, then I have to check the quality and assets its advantages over others. Also, I don’t want a brand that overlaps with the others I represent like Jeanneau, Prestige, Fjord and Sealine, and the new, modern Italian brand, De Antonio. This is, after all, my hobby, not my primary business, so I want everyone to be happy”. At the 2017 Kuwait Yacht Show Bader Alyahya Yachts will, therefore, showcase a smorgasbord of designs from across Europe including the Polish brand Galeon. Established in 1982, Galeon is known globally for specializing in the construction of luxury yachts and motorboats. The company now employs over 800 people working on an 18,000m² workshop. The company was thrilled that Mr. Alyahya agreed to represent them in Kuwait. “In fact, there is already a Lebanese dealership in the GCC, but last year they invited me to be their dealer, I was very happy. I chose to work alongside the Lebanese agents. My first order was for three Galeon models so the Polish company was ecstatic. Apart from Galeon, I am also bringing to the show a number of other brands including a Prestige yacht” he confides. Bader Alyahya Yachts is the first company to own the GCC dealership for the multi award-winning, French yacht brand Prestige. Known for their slick interiors and highly perfected hulls by designer Jernej Jakopin, Prestige has won major prizes at all the major boat shows in Cannes, Dusseldorf, Milan, and in Hainan, in South China. A further two models will be exhibited from another favourite brand, Jeanneau. Part of Prestige, Jeanneau famously combines luxury and efficiency with top-end names in yacht design such as Camillo and Vittorio Garroni and Premorel Concept. The models at the yacht show have been chosen for their suitability for Kuwait, both size-wise and budget-wise. There will also be two boats on display from Suprema, says Alyahya. Suprema are yachts unlike any other in the same price range, because they have super yachts standards, and are built by superyacht builders. The lines of the Suprema range are unequivocally Italian; the interiors are hand-crafted by some of the finest yacht-builders in the industry. The build quality of Suprema yachts is also superlative, with the Vinylester resin used throughout, resulting in a stronger, more flexible hull, guaranteed to last longer. Carbon fiber—famous in Formula 1 for having a superior strength-to-weight ratio—is used in the longitudinal and lateral stringers, ensuring a stiffer hull.

Bader Alyahya Yachts will be showcasing the unmistakable Sealine brand at KYS. This brand is known for its luminous interiors, flexibility and style. Some of the Sealine products are the work of renowned master yacht designer, Bill Dixon, based out of Southampton in the UK, who has worked on all sizes of the boat from 120-foot custom sailing yachts to 50-foot production motor yachts. A newcomer to Kuwait, De Antonio is an innovative Italian brand that has Mr Bader Alyahya’s eyes sparkling. With the ink on the dealership agreement still fresh, Alyahya explains how this new concept of the motor boat will perfectly suit Kuwait’s new generation seeking style and performance. “De Antonio is like the fine chocolate that goes with coffee” laughs Bader Alyahya. “It is for somebody who wants to be unique; someone looking to be different from the others”. De Antonio is also one of the companies at the forefront of today’s changing trends in yacht building. “There are huge changes in yachts, in terms, of design and function as the next generation look for new styles” projects Alyahya.“In the last decades we have been moving away from those ‘classic’ hand-made yachts with their expensive wood, glass and brass fittings, and we have embraced a style that we can say is ‘modern’. However ‘modern’ is now evolving towards yacht designs, that make use of new high-tech’ materials. We see the less bespoke craftsmanship and detailing more matte finishes; it’s a style we can call ‘super-modern’. It’s not that ‘classic’ yachts are no longer available, they are, but the trend is definitely moving towards this new direction”. And he adds, as less expensive materials are being used and production shifts to regions with cheaper labour costs, it means the prices are being kept down. Another trend Bader Alyahya is keen to underline is the need for a more ‘Green’ mindset. He points out how solar power and renewable energy, including rechargeable batteries, must be the way forward for the sake of our planet and our children. A brand new concept that Bader Alyahya Yachts will be introducing to Kuwait soon is the brand Overblow from Italy. It transforms a yacht into a luxurious live-aboard. Overblow’s 58-foot model benefits from high ceilings, no less than five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen, living room and a dining room, all 100% Italian design. Alyahya says excitedly “I plan a very special event to launch this product. Believe me, people, will love it! Imagine if you don’t have a beach house or chalet, instead, you have a luxurious floating home, with bedrooms that are 10m². It’s an amazing concept. Plus, we made a great deal, so the price is very flexible so everyone can own this class of yacht. We all know yachts depreciate in value but if you think that the enjoyment of the entire family increases, therefore we could say there is an appreciation in lifestyle”. It is a lifestyle that Bader Alyahya clearly loves, one that he clearly enjoys so much that in just a few years, that hobby has now become an extraordinary business success.

Power Boat Centre Gone in Sixty-Seconds

F

ahad Al Ghareeb at Kuwait’s Power Boat Centre enjoys life in the fast lane. In this special sixty-second interview, we ask him to take us on a lightning tour of his company’s boat brands and what to expect at KYS 2017.

THE DEALER

What are the key brands you represent in Kuwait? Why did you pick these brands? We primarily deal in Sunseeker and IMG yachts. We picked them because they are both synonymous with luxury, performance and style. Sunseeker started in the UK in Poole, and have a long history dating back to 1969, by the 70s they were already world leaders and highly advanced, a tradition they have continued to this day.IMG are popular as they are highly versatile fishing boats that although they are not produced in large numbers, compared to other big boat brands, they are technically advanced.

Please tell us about the appeal of Cigarette yachts? The Cigarette powerboat is a great brand for those who like the excitement of speed combined with a truly luxurious ride. It’s glamorous and powerful. We always say the Cigarette speed boat is not a boat it’s a legend – you see it being enjoyed by people like Formula 1 racing drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at the Monaco Grand Prix last year. Here in Kuwait, our 50-foot Cigarette powerboat is best-selling.

What products will you show at the Yacht Show? We will showcase our best brands that cater to a wide range of customers here in Kuwait; these include Sunseeker, IMG, Cigarette, Mercury and Marine spare parts.

IMG yachts are well suited to Kuwait as we have many people who enjoy going out fishing in the Gulf; it’s part of our tradition here. IMG offers a very versatile range of fishing boats that are of high quality, and it is, of course, a brand that has a very generous range of features that come as standard - which gives the customer the satisfaction of knowing he gets value for money, plus you have the sheer enjoyment factor which gives the brand great credibility especially for those who love sea fishing.

What do Kuwaitis find so special about Sunseeker yachts? The Sunseeker brand is known worldwide for its high-quality boats, they come with superb interior design and they feel very luxurious. The largest boat we have sold here was an 116 footer.

Please tell us more about the IMG brand and their most popular models that are suited to Kuwait

THE DEALER

Riding the Wave Seas & Deserts Group

K

uwait-based Seas & Deserts Group is a regular attendee to Kuwait Yacht Show. Men’s Passion speaks to Sales Manager, Abdul Hamid Marhaba, about the company’s growth in the GCC and finds out how business has remained so buoyant in these challenging economic times.

THE DEALER

What will S&D be showcasing at Kuwait Yacht Show 2017 and what will your company’s attendance at KYS bring?

What are the most important changes S&D has witnessed over the past year in terms of its business and dealerships?

We will showcase a full range of Azimut Yachts in addition to brands such as Sea Ray, Boston Whaler and Garmin, they are the boats we feel are most appropriate to the show and to customers here in Kuwait. The Kuwait Yacht Show is a place where we always look for serious prospects, it’s a huge social gathering so it also enables us to meet clients and gather information for further follow up. We are confident the show will bring a boost to the market as it is exclusive to Kuwait and an important opportunity to introduce our wide range of brands to new customers.

Our company is still growing! Very soon we will open a new office Qatar in the new ‘Pearl’ development, which includes a large marina, luxury shopping and residences. We’ve been in the Qatar market for a few years now but we believe moving to this address carries a lot of prestige and we feel certain it’s the ideal location for the marine business in Qatar.

Which of S&D’s latest products are you most proud of? And which product is most relevant to Kuwait?

The economic downturn is in truth global and didn’t just affect the Gulf, it affected all sectors and domains, not only the marine industry. That said, we feel very blessed, thanks to careful marketing strategies and loyal clients we have been able to maintain our sales, even in these tough times, and indeed we are expanding our presence by open luxurious new offices in Qatar, which will add further benefits and give us a higher profile.

It has to be the Azimut brand! As everyone knows this is an Italian yacht-manufacturing company founded by Paolo Vitelli, based in Avigliana, Italy. Azimut is not only a worldrecognized name, it’s the world leader simply because the Azimut-Benetti Group has been commended as the number one yacht builder for sixteen years in a row. The company started by chartering a single sailing boat and then went onto develop into a large luxury yacht-building company. The latest 66 Fly is a great example of their innovation and success; she won The “Most Technologically Advanced Yacht” in the World Yacht Trophy awards, considered among the prestigious awards in the industry, in Cannes in September 2016. Among the entire Azimut lineup, my favorite yachts are the 50-foot and 80-foot Flybridge 77S and 95-foot RPH Grande. What do you feel gives S&D the edge over other Kuwait companies in the yacht/marine industry? Long experience in the marine business, dedication, good planning and professionalism are our strong points. We always try to offer our clients the best sales and aftersales service and this means building good relations with them, so we can work very closely to address their needs and understand what they want to get out of their yachting experience. Our offices cover Kuwait, UAE and Qatar which also means we have a regional presence.

Has S&D been affected by the economic downturn here in the Gulf? If so, how has that impacted business? If not, why not?

How has the yachting industry changed in the last decade? Is technology now playing a much greater role in the industry? Overall the industry has seen many improvements in many areas, especially in terms of design, spatial management, innovation and technology, not forgetting advances in safety and comfort. Today we see the extensive use of pure carbon fibre such as in the Azimut 66 and 72 Flybridge, which before was just used in limited areas of the yacht. In addition, we now have electric power steering, which gives a sensation similar to driving a topof-the-range car; this is used in the Azimut 66 and Flybridge. Furthermore we see better and more innovative propulsion systems such as those used by Benetti Super Yachts. All the above have significantly improved the speed, efficiency, comfort, and safety of the yacht owners. It has brought about lower noise levels and better maneuverability; plus it has also allowed the increasing of internal space for the same size and weight of the boats, so the client who buys a boat today gets a better all-round experience at sea compared to a few years ago.

Al Kout Kuwait’s largest mixed-use waterfront destination

A

l Kout is set to become the largest mixed-use waterfront destination in Kuwait, offering world-class retail, lifestyle, dining, entertainment and leisure experiences within the region. A project under the overarching umbrella of Tamdeen Group, that aims to reshape the urban and social landscape of Kuwait through innovative projects, will be unveiled by end of this year.

THE VENUE

The new development through its fusion of traditional architecture and modern contemporary design will create a landmark destination with timeless appeal. In its entirety, Al Kout will be a single but multi-faceted destination with diverse offerings. When completed, the development will include six different experiences. A major component of the project is the new Al Kout Mall, built at a cost of KD 70 million, and will reflect additional 260 retail spaces within the entire project. In addition, through the redevelopment and expansion of the existing Al Kout mall and its transformation into Souq Al Kout, the project will boast over 100,000 m2 of retail space. The new retail component will have outlets, restaurants, cafes, as well as a food court, a gym and spa. Also with multi-storey car parking to accommodate 2,700 cars, the parking woes will be a thing of the past in this area. Leasing for the mall is ongoing with huge interest from several leading international and regional players. The mall is over 70 percent leased and committed for by tenants and will include a popular anchor and retail stores from groups including M.H.Alshaya Co. and Azadea Group to name a few. The adjacent luxurious 200-suite Rotana Hotel has been a huge success from the day it opened. The hotel will connect directly to the shops and restaurants within the new Al Kout Mall. Rotana has a huge demand for weddings, conferences and other gala events. To cater to this, a brand new purposebuilt ballroom is being added to the property. This facility will be unique and will add value to the entire destination.

The new Al Kout Mall will be linked by a signature bridge to Souq Al Kout which is significant for its traditional design and serves as the community hub of southern Kuwait. With its landmark fountains and stunning views of the marina and the sea, the redeveloped souq which has two piers will have new upscale offerings and retail partners in its North Pier that will best resonate with the ambience being curated. The existing South Pier focuses on fresh food offerings, with 172 fresh food stall/stores, that import produce from over 18 different countries across five different continents. Alongside the Souq Al Kout fresh markets, is Nag’at Al Kout, the traditional fishing wharf where fishermen ply their trade with the facility of close to 67 traditional fishing dhows. Al Kout’s stunning 1.6 km of immaculate seafront across Fahaheel Beach is now being renamed Sahel Al Kout. This serene stretch of sand is among Kuwait’s largest, beckoning azure waters and offering pristine and clean white beach. The beachfront offers uninterrupted views of the Arabian Gulf and blends seamlessly with the state-of-the-art marina, Marsa Al Kout with its excellent facilities with 156 berths, of which 13 are for visiting boats that can pull up straight to Souq Al Kout and the new Al Kout mall. Upon completion of all phases, Al Kout will occupy a massive 300,000 m2 of the total area creating Kuwait’s largest mixeduse waterfront destination. Programming of pedestrian walkways, landscaping and environmental graphics between all elements will help visitors move effortlessly across the entire development and have a truly great experience.

MARINE DESTINATIONS

The Finest Yachting Experiences

O

Ten ‘must see’ destinations

ne of the best things about owning or chartering a motor yacht, is that you can go just about anywhere. Where to go on a yacht is limited only by your time, your budget, and the kind of boating experience you want to have. We turned to 26 North’s Will Snyder for the inside story.

The French Riviera

MARINE DESTINATIONS

The Lesser Antilles Whether you want to spend your time island hopping, club hopping, or hopping clear across the ocean, here in no particular order is Will’s Top Ten places to see, and be seen, aboard a luxury motor yacht! Italy’s Amalfi Coast – From Naples to Positano and the legendary island of Capri, Italy’s Amalfi Coast is a yacht charter destination filled with striking harbors and historic sites. Drawing people to its shores since the time of the Caesars, this charming stretch of the Italian coastline is synonymous with beauty, history, and romanticism. The Lesser Antilles – Halfway down the eastern Caribbean, you’ll find the Leeward Islands, also known as the Lesser Antilles. The island chain consists of names that have defined “tropical paradise,” such as St Bart’s, St Martin, Antigua, Montserrat and Guadeloupe. On a yacht charter through the Leeward Islands you can experience it all, from powdery white sand beaches, to exotic cuisine and outrageous nightlife.

Italy’s Amalfi Coast

The French Riviera – What list of places to see, and be seen on a luxury motor yacht could possibly be complete without including the French Riviera? The Côte d’Azur is “ground zero” for the superyacht culture and lifestyle, and is home to such international events such as Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix, which make it one of the world’s most popular areas for yacht charters.

47 48

MARINE DESTINATIONS

Bermuda Bermuda – Bermuda is soon to be known for more than shorts and great golf resorts. Always a popular destination for boaters, it is increasingly one of the places “to be” for high end yacht charters, as the island was recently named the host island for the next America’s Cup in 2017. Exumas and The Bahamas – Just a hop, skip and a jump from South Florida, the Bahamas are a well-known yacht charter destination. Forget the cruise ships, the only way to experienceall the Bahamas, from Nassau to the Exumas Archipelago, is from your own private yacht.

Exumas and The Bahamas

Newport, Rhode Island – The coastal town of Newport, Rhode Island has been synonymous with sailing for

MARINE DESTINATIONS

Newport, Rhode Island centuries, but it is a great summer destination for motor yachts as well. Yacht charters in and around Newport include not only the Newport area with its impressive array of mansions, but also exclusive vacation spots such as Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The Azores – The Azores are an autonomous group of islands forming an archipelago off the coast of Portugal. It is an ideal summer charter location, but thanks to the Gulf Stream, has mild weather year round. From volcanoes, to beaches, to preserved wetlands, and home to about 1/3 of the world’s species of whales, the Azores are a little-known paradise, and one experienced best from a yacht.

MARINE DESTINATIONS

Maine

The Galapagos Maine – Maine may not pop into your mind when you think of exotic locales for a private yacht charter, however, it’s hard to imagine a better place to enjoy a summer charter in the Northeast US. Maine has everything you could hope for in a New England Yacht charter destination, from quaint fishing villages, to a jumping off point for cruising to more remote out-islands. The Galapagos – Channel your inner Charles Darwin on a yacht charter to the Galapagos Islands. Located about 600 miles west of Ecuador, if encounters with nature is what you want in a yacht charter, we would be hard pressed to find any better destination than Galapagos.

Alaska

Alaska – Can you possibly imagine a richer, or more amazing experience than lounging in the hot tub on the sundeck of your private yacht charter, sipping champagne while cruising past glaciers that are letting lose huge chunks of blue ice as if it is being sliced off by the hand of God? That is just one of the incomparable things you can experience during a yacht charter in Alaska.

THE LUXE CARS

The Ferrari 812 Superfast Geneva world premiere to come

F

errari has selected the 87th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show for the world premiere of the new 12-cylinder Berlinetta, the 812 Superfast, the most powerful and fastest Ferrari in the marque’s history. This new car not only introduces a plethora of innovative features but is also particularly significant as the V12 series marked the official start of the glorious Prancing Horse story in 1947, 70 years ago this year.

THE LUXE CARS

The 812 Superfast thus ushers in a new era in Ferrari 12-cylinder history, in doing so building on the invaluable legacies of the F12berlinetta and F12tdf. It is aimed at clients demanding the most powerful and exclusive Ferrari in the range: an uncompromising sports car that will deliver exhilarating driving both on road and track yet also be comfortable enough to allow its owners enjoy it as an all-around experience. Engine Powered by a new 6.5-litre V12 engine that unleashes 800 cv, the 812 Superfast is the new benchmark in the mid-frontengined sports car segment, achieving maximum power output at 8,500 rpm, which translates to a specific power output of 123 cv/l. Figures that no other front-engined production car has ever even come near to delivering and which ensure the kind of thrilling top-end performance that is the exclusive characteristic of Ferrari’s noble V12 heritage. Maximum torque is 718 Nm @ 7,000 rpm, a significant 80% of which is already available at 3,500 rpm, improving both driveability and pick-up even at low revs. These performance levels were achieved in part by adopting a 350 bar direct injection system for the very first time on a highperformance engine and pairing it with variable geometry intake tracts conceptually derived from those of naturallyaspirated F1 engines. The 812 Superfast’s dual-clutch transmission has specific gear ratios which, combined with shorter up and down-shifting times between gears, sharpen throttle response still further. Vehicle dynamics The 812 Superfast is equipped with leading-edge control systems and components, resulting in unparalleled handling and road holding. It’s the first Ferrari to sport EPS (Electric Power Steering) which, in accordance with Ferrari’s uncompromising engineering approach, is used to fully exploit the potential of the car’s performance and, through the complete integration with all the electronic vehicle dynamics controls – including the latest 5.0 version of Ferrari’s patented Side Slip Control (SCC) make its powerful performance easier to handle and even more thrilling to exploit. Styling and aerodynamics Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new 812 Superfast

redefines the formal language of front-engined V12 Ferraris, underlining the car’s exceptional performance with very sporty lines and proportions. Seen in silhouette, the 812 Superfast has a fastback sleekness: a two-box design with a high tail reminiscent of the glorious 365 GTB4 of 1969. The design of the flanks visually shortens the tail and is characterised by impressively muscular wheel arches which imbue the 812 Superfast with the power and aggression warranted by its imposing V12. Full-LED headlights integrated into the design of the sculpted air intakes on the bonnet also emphasise that front muscle, integrating with, and wrapping around the front wheel arch. At the rear, four round taillights inspired by Ferrari tradition emphasise a design crafted around horizontal lines and give the 812 Superfast a broad, imposing stance, visually lowering both spoiler and cabin. As with all Ferraris, style and aerodynamic function are seamlessly integrated to produce innovative solutions and forms. Two examples are the multi-functional frontal section, which incorporates a cluster of aerodynamic solutions including active flaps at the front of the underbody, and the rear flank which features an unprecedented aerodynamic by-pass to increase downforce. The car is being launched in a special new colour, Rosso Settanta, which marks the company’s 70th anniversary. Interior The interior of the 812 SUPERFAST has been revisited in line with the more extreme exterior whilst maintaining unaltered the exceptional onboard comfort and space that Ferrari’s frontengined V12 Berlinetta have always offered. The cabin has been given a sportier, more radical look with the main elements seeming to float, creating an effect of both thoroughbred racing eagerness and lean elegance. The horizontal dash loops stylishly around the central air vents for a sophisticated, sculptural look. New, more sporty and ergonomic seats feature alongside the new HMI, including new steering wheel and instrument clusters and the latest infotainment and air-conditioning

The Speedmaster 38 mm

T

Simplicity meets iconic design

he OMEGA Speedmaster is one of the most recognised chronographs in the world. Now, OMEGA introduces this refined 38 mm collection. The famous look and heritage are still at the heart of creation, but this time, the enduring design has been given a pure and new aesthetic touch.

THE LUXE WATCHES

This model nicknamed “Cappuccino” is just one piece in the complete collection for both men and women. Its case is made from stainless steel and 18K Sedna™ gold, while the strap has been made from taupe-brown leather. One of the watch’s most interesting features is the diamondpaved bezel that also includes a tachymeter scale on a brown aluminium ring. This dual design has enabled OMEGA to add the elegance of diamonds and also retain the sporty DNA of the original Speedmaster models. The watch features a bicolour dial with unique oval subdials in brown. At a closer look, these oval subdials closely resemble OMEGA’s own brand logo. Continuing on the dial,

an oval date window has been positioned at 6 o’clock and the “baton” hands and the indexes have been created from 18K Sedna™ gold. The case back has been stamped with the Speedmaster’s iconic Seahorse medallion, and on the inside, the watch is driven by the OMEGA Calibre 3330, complete with CoAxial technology and a silicon balance spring. This superb craftsmanship gives the watch a 4-year warranty. 60 years after the launch of the very first Speedmaster, the chronograph is still a great source of inspiration. Although its spirit remains the same, this new 38 mm collection has been created with simplicity, size and colour in mind.

Zeitwerk Decimal Strike

T

Acoustic signal in ten-minute intervals

he Zeitwerk Decimal Strike makes time audible in a new way: its striking mechanism sounds every ten minutes. The case of this timepiece, limited to an edition of 100, consists of honey gold as used exclusively by Lange. Introduced in 2009, the A. Lange & Sรถhne ZEITWERK gave time a new face with a mechanical jumping numerals display. Now, the ZEITWERK DECIMAL STRIKE is enriching the successful, unusually designed watch family with a third model featuring an acoustic time indication.

THE LUXE WATCHES

Given its mechanical architecture, the ZEITWERK calibre offers ideal prerequisites for the integration of a striking mechanism: A large amount of energy is built up for advancing it’s mechanical, precisely jumping numerals displays. As was already the case with the ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER and the ZEITWERK STRIKING TIME, this energy can be put to good use by an automatic striking mechanism. In the new model, it relies on two differently tuned gongs to indicate the full hours as well as the tenminute intervals between the start of one hour and the next. The two hammers that are visible on the dial side consist of polished steel and, like the hammer bridge, are decorated with a tremblage engraving. The hammer on the left strikes the low-pitched gong once every full hour. The right-hand hammer sounds a higher-pitched tone every ten minutes, or in other words, every time a new ten-minute interval begins. With its large, precisely jumping numerals display, the ZEITWERK DECIMAL STRIKE assures excellent legibility. In one-minute intervals, the units’ disc instantly advances by exactly one increment. The patented constant-force

escapement between the mainspring barrel and the balance delivers the power. It makes sure that the balance has a constant amount of energy across the entire power reserve period. The high-pitched tone sounds every time the tens disc advances; at the start of the hour, when the low-pitched tone is struck, all three numeral discs jump synchronously by one increment. The striking mechanism can be switched off. When the button at 4 o’clock is pressed, the hammers are deflected away from the gongs. This also happens when the crown is pulled to set the time. The technical concept is paired with an innovative material. The case of the ZEITWERK DECIMAL STRIKE, limited to an edition of 100 watches, consists of honey gold as used exclusively by A. Lange & Söhne; it has a diameter of 44.2 millimetres. The lavishly finished manually wound calibre L043.7 has a maximum power reserve of 36 hours. Langetypical quality hallmarks include the three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver and decorated with Glashütte ribbing, the hand-engraved balance cock, and a camPoised balance with a free-sprung hairspring crafted in-house.

The vintage-inspired Divers Sixty-Five collection serves as a reminder of the company’s pioneering spirit and innovative approach to watchmaking. numerals delivered outstanding underwater legibility. Both features delivered practical benefits that have made the Aquis a design icon and one of the first names in diver’s watches. The new Aquis Date continues both the spirit and design DNA of its predecessor. Oris’s designers have added a touch of elegance to the tool watch to reflect the versatility owners now expect from a divers’ watch. Oris diver’s watches are no longer just for underwater adventures, they’re often found under a cuff. Much of the effect is in the detail. The horns and the bracelet are now thinner, giving the case and the whole watch a more slender profile. The hands and indices have been redesigned to look bolder and sharper, and the screw-in security crown and crown protectors have been refined to give the watch a sleeker silhouette. The bezel inlay is made of black, scratchand fade-resistant ceramic, and the dial now proudly carries the Aquis name. Oris has been making diver’s watches since the 1960s. The vintage-inspired Divers Sixty-Five collection serves as a reminder of the company’s pioneering spirit and innovative approach to watchmaking. The Oris Full Steel of the late 1990s was a high-performance sports watch. It demonstrated the inventive ethos of Oris and sowed the seeds of the iconic Aquis collection, which became rapidly synonymous with diving watches. The new Aquis Date presents the next chapter in a story that began over 50 years ago. The first Aquis was characterised by the design of its muscular horns and uni-directional rotating bezel. While the horns were designed so the metal bracelet or rubber strap would pivot to fit a wide range of wrist sizes, the broad bezel and its oversized

As well as aesthetic improvements, the new Aquis Date also delivers practical enhancements. The uni-directional bezel is now easier to grip, thanks to a small gap introduced between the case and the body, allowing greater purchase. The Aquis Date is water-resistant to 30 bar (300 metres), making it ideal for experienced scuba divers. As a result, the new Oris Aquis Date is a stylish, highperforming diver’s watch. ‘We are extremely pleased with the next generation Aquis diver’s watch,’ commented Oris Chairman Ulrich W. Herzog. ‘This is a beautiful, hugely reliable underwater tool watch, made using the exacting techniques and according to the highest standards of Swiss watch manufacturing that have made Oris famous all over the world, and in the diving community in particular.’

Sama Eyewear Spring Summer 2017 Men’s Collection

S

ama Men’s Collection for Spring/Summer 2017 takes us on a fantastic journey with new advances in tech, artisanal metalwork, mixed materials, and some of the most intricately designed feats in eyewear engineering. For Sheila Vance, CEO & Designer nothing is embellished without purpose as she is always pushing the art of discovery, creating flawless features and nuances that are part of intimacy with the wearer. Even the most basic Sama style has an intricate feature or complexity and a design subtlety definable only by the most discerning eye. Beta-titanium metals, combinations of raw materials and natural elements, flat facing matte finishes, futuristic forms and custom colors, offer newly evolved models.

THE LUXE STYLE

Nano temples are introduced with intricate laser etching in vintage washed metals that enhance the frame. Layered insets of the thinnest, flat layer of metal shown both in and out of the acetate create textured combinations. Rounding out the classics this season is the extension of the director’s series, pairing rich antiqued metal nano temples with custom colored acetate faces. For summer 2017 Sama introduces a modified club master shape, with the flat metal temple and front frame inserts giving a sleek, multi-dimension effect. Also, new for the season is the addition of a beta-titanium, flat nose piece in matte white or gold tones paired with the frame. The new single piece metal, a totally hypoallergenic pad, ensures the frames are “mark-free” for comfort and as good looking inside as out. Men’s driving frames and aviator styles continue to take a front seat and are a force for the collection. Aviators are seen in bold sizes and a new scale. Ambitious, geometric shapes and chunkier, bold matte gold, replace the traditional top bar for a futuristic flavor to the key coastal classic with

the new Bravado frame. Square and more exaggerated shapes push new limits in the premium category. Futuristic forms continue with designer Sheila Vance’s state of the art one-piece, pure titanium “block” piece in her 1991 series. A newer version of the inspired aviator was created with only one piece of metal and a single milled eye wire screw in full flat and 2 base curve options. New in the combustion series she offers round and classic oversized aviator shapes with flat lenses and its signature diamond plate detailed temple in titanium for a sleek, sporty look and that is still a featherweight. Exciting new custom lens options for the collection include a light wash, milder mirrors and pale ombres, in addition to their liquid gold (24K yellow, 18K white and rose), 100% pure platinum and an array of opaque colored mirrors. The cool factor certainly heats up for Men for Sama Summer 2017.

Ditch the Spinach Get mean and lean on a sailing machine

P

opeye relied on his trademark spinach in the beloved cartoon, but sailing is no child’s play as the sport has proven to be one of the most demanding and dynamic activities that one can do. Indeed, what likely got Popeye his ‘guns’ was the fact that he was a sailorman, rather than a leafy green fiend. So what makes the sport a challenge both on and off the water ?Fahad Al Hasni, skipper of Team Renaissance for this year’s EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour (SATT), shares his insights into the fitness levels required to be a successful sailor and the top exercises to focus on to get sailor fit. “Sailing is a great sport that tests you both mentally and physically. People of all fitness levels should be open to trying it as a new experience, but should be aware that although it’s a fun activity, it’s also demanding and at the best times, highly competitive,”says Al Hasni, who has participated in seven SATT tours and is a record-breaking sailor in his solo career. “It’s an equal challenge for both men and women, and young and old. In preparing for any demanding race, especially an off-shore race like EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour, fitness is key,” Al Hasni continued. “You never know the conditions on the water that you’re going to face so it’s important that your body is able to react and handle anything.” “As part of your fitness routine you train for long races as well as short because when you’re in competition there will be times when you have long stretches of water to cover, but you’ll also have very quick in-port sailing to perform. Preparation is the key to be successful in both types of racing and to make sure you’re healthy overall. When it comes to health and sailing, having a plan is an integral component.” Below are a few tips that are a part of any sailors’ fitness plan. The key to a strong sailor is a strong core Back and abdomen muscles are instrumental to helping you stay upright and keep your balance, a seemingly impossible task when you first start out and you’re battling 5-metrewaves in Farr 30 one-design keelboats. The core muscles support your abdomen and lower back, providing support for your entire body. All sailing techniques will engage your abs at some point, with some of the more advanced moves requiring you to keep your core tensed for an extended amount of time.

By Fahad Al Hasni, the skipper of Team Renaissance for his seventh EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour and record-breaking Omani sailor

THE LUXE SPORTS

Key exercises to target your core are leg raises, superman stretches and planks. To perfect leg raises follow the tips below: 1.Lie flat on your back with your legs stretched out in front of you. 2.Gradually raise your legs towards the ceiling keeping them straight. You should end with your toes pointed toward the ceiling and your thighs perpendicular to your body. 3.While keeping your legs straight, slowly lower them to about an inch off the floor. Don’t just let gravity work for your - make sure you’re in control. 4.Slowly raise your legs back up to the ceiling, without them ever touching the floor. You should do as many lifts as you can in one minute, then take a 30 second rest. This should be completed three times. Effective Superman Exercise 1.Lie flat on your stomach with arms stretched out in front of you, keeping your legs straight. 2. Slowly lift your arms and legs keeping them straight, without arching your back. Hold this position for a few seconds 3.Repeat 10 times. To make the exercise more challenging try lifting the opposite arm with opposite leg like scissors 10 times on each side. Perfect Planks This exercise is one of the most challenging and effective for targeting abdominals and back. To master this, get into a push up position with your elbows bearing your weight. Hold for 30-60 seconds. Your abs should be engaged, and your back should be completely flat while performing this exercise.

Lean and Mean Upper Body It should be no surprise that sailing puts the arms and shoulders to good use. A strong upper body will help you better when you need to maneuver the boat and control its direction. Whether male or female a strong chest helps you power the rest of the upper body and will help you perform your newly acquired sailing skills with ease, time after time.

Do this five times. You use the same muscles on the way down that you use on the way up which teaches the muscles in your upper body how to coordinate with each other. To engage more of your biceps simply complete the exercise with your hands facing towards you instead. Tricep Dips - Tricep dips will target the often ignored back of the upper arm.

When developing your upper body it’s important to focus on balancing out the muscles so that you build an even structure over time. Below are some great upper body workouts to get you ready for your first sailing adventure.

1.Sit on a stable chair that will support your weight.

Chin –Up

3.Use your arms to lift yourself off the chair and lower yourself toward the floor.

1.Line your body up perpendicular to a pull-up bar. 2.Placing your hands shoulder width apart on the bar facing away from you, pull yourself up until your chin is over the bar. 3.Try to hang for 30 seconds, then slowly lower yourself down in a slow and controlled manner.

2.Place your hands palm down on either side of your hips on the chair.

4.Hold yourself in this position for 20 to 30 seconds. 5.Using only your arms, lift yourself back up again. You’ll want to do this 10 to 20 times then rest for 30 seconds before you repeat two additional sets.

Push - Ups Push- ups also help strengthen and tone the muscles of the arms, shoulder s and chest. You should aim for 10 to 20 push-ups a day and gradually increase this number as you get stronger. Modified push-ups are easier if you’re just star ting out and provide the same benefits. Just put your weight on your knees instead of your feet, but make sure that you still focus on keeping your back straight. Car diovascular s t r engt h Finally, to complete your sailor fit routine, you’ll need to have built up your overall cardiovascular health and lower body strength. Sea level rise in global cities

A

s the threat of rising sea levels is imminent, architects and urban planners look for innovative solutions that protect people and cities around the world – Cityscape investigates

REAL ESTATE REPORT

Most of the world’s important cities like New York, Singapore, and Hong Kong are situated on the coast of a sea or ocean or at the heart of a major river like London and Paris. All are exposed to sea level rise, which means all may experience destruction related to excess water flowing past barriers that no longer suffice at some point in the coming years. Because no one can predict accurately when, preparations have to be made by city planners and architects for the tsunami, super storm, or another black swan that can cause disaster in a few hours. To prepare for black swan crises caused by water, drought, migration, and other risk factors, in 2013 the Rockefeller Foundation created the 100 Resilient Cities programme. By November 2015 the 100 cities had been selected. Although they cover every continent and face different kinds of problems, they are united in readiness to prepare for future problems before they happen. 100 Resilient Cities The 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) were selected from among 1,000 cities that applied. They include Accra, Bangalore, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Christchurch, Jakarta, Kyoto, London, Miami, New York City, Panama City, Paris, Ramallah, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Rotterdam, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Toronto, and Vancouver. On the 100RC website, the tagline is “Crisis is the new normal for cities in the 21st century.” Crises may be caused not only by the black swan “shocks” but also by “the stresses that weaken the fabric of a city on a day to day or cyclical basis,” such as high unemployment, violence, chronic food and water shortages.

Role of Chief Resilience Officer A few years ago, the title didn’t exist, nor did the concept of a city’s resilience as something that could be studied, analysed, and improved. On the job for less than a year, Jim Murley is the first Chief Resilience Officer in Miami-Dade County. Miami-Dade encompasses the City of Miami, the cities of Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Doral, and a host of neighbourhoods with a total population of 2.7 million. That means many people face potential risks. As Murley told a reporter for the Miami Herald, “We’re on a peninsula surrounded by water … That defines the very issue that we have to deal with as we think about sea-level rise and climate change.” In the short run, Murley says, the city is focusing on projects with multiple benefits. “We protect the infrastructure as we upgrade it.” The water and sewer system in one district is being expanded and deepened for greater capacity. A waste treatment plant is being upgraded to withstand a Category 3 storm surge. “Each time we look at major infrastructures such as the port or the airport,” explains Murley, “we build in resilience … so that we make no-regrets changes,” and adds, “We’re adjusting our processes to do that.” Role of architecture Illya Azaroff is an architect with +LAB in New York, a studio with the mission “to explore, build resilient capacity and advance goals for a sustainable future.” He’s also Regional Representative to the American Institute of Architects’ National Strategic Council.

95 96

REAL ESTATE REPORT

Azaroff considers sea level rise “the imperative of our time” that “impacts all aspects of the built environment, where people live and work as well as transportation, infrastructure, culture, and beyond.” He points out that most of the world’s people live in cities at risk. “We have a great deal of the GDP and cultural capacity of the world in these areas of risk not to mention some of the most vulnerable populations in the world.” The devastation caused in New York City and surrounding counties by Super Storm Sandy in 2012 led to the creation by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development of Rebuild by Design, a competition announced in 2013 for adding resilience to communities victimised by Sandy. Seven of 10 winning projects are under implementation. The Big U in Manhattan The Big U from the Bjarke Ingels Group has received the most publicity and is the most ambitious. The design encompasses raising streets and parks around the tip of Manhattan to create more public sports and entertainment areas as well as protect the area from the future sea level rise.

Getting the Big U and the other projects from rendering to reality requires extensive communication with local communities and input from many stakeholders, which slows progress but guarantees buy-in from groups that might tend to fight a project perceived as coming from the outside. The Panel on Climate Change in New York City collects documents that are available to architects working there. “To project forward for sea level rise, models are available, or climate action plans that have been developed by cities,” says Azaroff. “There is science available for projecting a future that can be tied to the lifecycle of a building to inform how to design and where to build.” The architect has to understand “site location, conditions of current risks such as periodic flooding, mapped flood zones as well as potential inland flooding sources from upland rain, snow melt,” and so on. Monad Terrace in South Beach Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel from Ateliers Jean Nouvel in Paris has designed a condominium residence in South Beach for JDS Development Group that he calls a “reflection machine.” Rather than building to keep the sea out,

REAL ESTATE REPORT

Nouvel brings it into the design of Monad Terrace. Two mid-rise towers of 14 and 7 storeys are separated by a lagoon open to South Beach Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Monad Terrace will provide 51 residences with high ceilings, water views, and natural light as well as tropical foliage and the unfettered sea. In an exclusive interview with critic and author Alastair Gordon published in the Miami Herald, Nouvel said, “We are working to accommodate the water rise through the landscape itself.” On the land side, Monad Terrace is bounded by West Street where the city has been raising street levels and upgrading pumping stations to control endemic flooding after strong rains.

Everyone should be thinking about “resource stresses” due to sea level rise, Azaroff believes.“Global migration will increase to 200 million people by 2050 and over 550 million by 2100…It is the role of architects and planners to recognise these concerns and plan for them, advise communities and governments as well as design for a better future,” he concludes. It’s a huge job but someone has to do it. This article is supplied by Cityscape Magazine.

Cities at risk “Think of any city on the water that was a major harbour for trade and commerce historically, and you have your answer,” says Azaroff. In addition to New York, “the entire Boston-Washington Megalopolis is at risk,” - comprising 20 percent of U.S. GDP - “and around the world, London, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Rio, Shanghai, Sydney, the list goes on and on.”
