COLL ANSWERS THE PARENTS The delegate responsible for Education in Menorca, Joan Coll, moved quickly to respond to some of the questions and criticisms expressed by parents at the gathering in Mahón last Saturday evening. In reply to the accusation that the five colleges in Mahon had out of date evacuation plans, Coll informed AMPA, the parents body, that a firm had been contracted by the Balearic government to ensure that these plans were modernised and in place, in some cases before the end of the year with the rest following in 2009. He also understood the parents’ frustration that they have had to go this far to start getting answers. Over the possibility of building another new college on the Via Ronda, Coll said that

although he would be looking into the project, he didn’t wish to make promises before he had studied all the options. Regarding the building extensions for Mateu Fontirroig, bids would be invited before the end of this year with the work beginning in January. It is estimated that the work would take about 12 months. After Coll hinted that some of the current problems were inherited from the previous administration, the ex delegate for education, Manuel Monerris, suggested that there was nothing to be gained from pointing fingers and sharing out blame. He also said that his time in charge saw budgeting set aside for two new schools, only one of which the current government was going ahead with at the moment.

CUTBACKS AT IB3 The local TV station IB3 are to reduce their workforce in Menorca by 30%. The motives are purely financial. There will now be only four permanent employees on the island. Throughout the whole of the Balearics there wll be 14 jobs lost saving the company one million euros a year. Those laid off will be paid 45 days pay for each year on contract that they have worked. IB3 insist that the cutbacks and

slimming down are vital in the current economic climate.

DEATH ON THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ROADS REMEMBRANCE SERVICE A 43 year old man lost his life in the early hours of last Sunday morning on the road from Mahon to Fornells. On Sunday morning the Guardia Civil had come across a crashed motorbike and made attempts to contact the owner. Having no success the advised a friend of the find and a search of the area was begun. Around 2.30pm the man’s body was discovered 50 metres away in a deep ditch. The Guardia Civil have said that although the body seemed relatively uninjured apart from normal cuts and bruises, insulin was found beside him. A post mortem was to be carried out. With this fatality, there are now a total of 12 people who have lost their lives on the road this year in Menorca.

The Royal British Legion will be holding a Remembrance Service at St.Margareta Anglican Church in Es Castell this coming Sunday. The President and Chairman and their wives will not be able to attend this year as they will be at the Remembrance Festival at the

Royal Albert Hall, representing Menorca. The Standard Bearer of the Legion flag in Menorca is Jan Henman and she will be escorted by Jan Hodgson and John Dell. The wreath has been donated by Dolly Martin. The service starts at 11.00 am and everyone is welcome.

LOW PENSIONS AND HIGH COST OF LIVING Pensioners on the island receive the fifth lowest pension in Spain in spite of the high cost of living in Menorca. Despite an average monthly payment of 621.80 euros, it is still the highest payment in the Balearics with pensioners in Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera getting 620, 593, and 533 respectively. As well as the old age pension these figures include payments for permanent invalidity and widows pensions.

MAHÓN DONATE 15,000€ TO THE ISLA DEL REY The mayor of Mahon, Vicenc Tur, and the president of the Isla del Rey Hospital Foundation, Luis Aliejandre Sintes, signed an agreement on Monday that will see the town council in Mahon donate 15,000 euros

towards the restoration work to be carried out on various buildings on the island. The Menorca Sun will be bringing you a full update on the restoration work in the coming weeks.

BOOKWORMS A big thank you to all those who responded after the ‘Educating British Children’ articles. Several schools, in the last few weeks, have now started contacting English speaking parents and offering help with translations and extra meetings. We thank the Menorca Sun for sticking with the debate and giving their support. The Bookworms Story Group is now growing and there has also been interest from the English Language teachers who may want to make use of the Children’s English Lilbrary. This would be fantastic for all the children whether native speakers or those learning English.

For that to happen though we would need many more books, from Nursery to Teen. So PLEASE if you have good quality books to donate please contact us (we will be happy to collect). Our other venture to raise funds for books, is for those parents wanting books/ crafts from the UK sent here (through ‘The Book People’) to contact us for the latest brochures. We hope that during the next planned visit to the UK to get some other publishers on board for this Library project - all help is very much appreciated With thanks. ANY ‘GANGSTA’ MUM’S IN MENORCA? Spain’s first prison wing for mothers was inaugurated by the Secretary of State for Security, Antonio Camacho, in Palma recently. Not only is the new centre the first of its kind in Spain, it is also one of the pioneers in the world and its example is going to be gradually followed by other prisons across the country. The new wing can accommodate up to 20 prisoners and their children and the first 17 inmates are due to move into their new abode during the next few weeks. The new penitentiary has been built on the Levante Industrial Estate and an adjacent Social Rehabilitation Centre for prisoners will also be opened by the end of the year.

This Social Rehabilitation Centre will care for third degree prisoners held under the open prison system and help them to readjust and prepare themselves for the outside world before being released. The mothers’ wing has cost some 20 million euros to build and is fitted with a wide range of facilities for both the mothers and their children. School rooms, a gym, a nursery, indoor playrooms, outside playgrounds, a laundry, a kitchen, medical services and a chemist will all be available for those held in the wing. Whilst offering maximum comfort and a wide range of services on the inside, the centre, however, is surrounded by the very latest security systems and controls.

POLICE TUTOR IN CIUTADELLA The town council of Ciutadella has appointed a “police tutor” in a new initiative to prevent problems relating to bullying, truancy, and the selling of drugs in the two institutes in the area. These are the main areas of conflicts in the classrooms. It was during last year’s course that the director of IES Josep Maria Quadrado first asked for some official support in these matters. This resulted in the appointment of Antoni Cladera. His boss, the head of the local police, Ignasi Camps, said that the new police tutor

would intervene anywhere he thought that there could be the possibility of any conflict that cannot be resolved within the normal confines of the schools’ own disciplinary guidelines. One of the first cases for Antoni Cladera has been to try and resolve an extreme case of truancy. Headmaster and teachers alike had tried to get the boy to school without success. Antonio feels that he is in a better position than the school to reach a solution to problems like this saving the teachers precious time that they would otherwise lose in the classroom.

MENORCA CLEANING TAKE THE ‘TAT’ OUT OF HABITAT! The latest HábItat Show takes place this weekend at the POIMA Exhibition Centre on the trading estate in Mahón. The doors will be open Friday 7th , Saturday 8th , and Sunday 9th from 11am until 9pm. Entrance is one euro. Over 40 firms have booked stands this year and us Brits will be represented by Kim Spooner and Chris Ellis from the Menorca Cleaning Centre who will be the only British owned business at the show. Kim and Chris set up MCC over a year ago now and have already built up a substantial client base. Based in Trebaluger, they supply a wide ranging specialist service cleaning and rejuvenating upholstery and floors. Chris said, “Clients increasingly find that we can clean and revive things that previously they would have maybe just thrown out and replaced. Furniture, car-

Chris does the dirty with naughty Noo-Noo! pets, rugs, curtains etc. In the current economic climate that can be important. The cost of

cleaning something will always work out cheaper than replacing it.”

STRESS? UNABLE TO SLEEP? It is thought that anxiety and stress brought about by the present economic crisis, will increase even more the number of people who will have problems in getting to sleep at night. So if you toss and turn all night and feel totally drained during the whole day, you are one of 33 per cent of people living in the Balearic Islands who suffer from insomnia. More women than men are affected, especially those between the ages of 45 and 50 years, with the menopause being an important factor. Many of those people who are unemployed suffer from stress and consequently very

often have sleepless nights. According to Doctor Francisca Canellas, the Coordinator of Mental Health at Palma’s Son Dureta Hospital, the reason for this is very often caused by depression, stress and anxiety. She added that the present economic crisis will only increase the number of cases, but Doctor Canellas did make the following suggestions to help you get to sleep. First and foremost, do not fall asleep in front of the television as nine times out of ten, you will wake up and not be able to get to sleep again. She also recommends taking the television out of the

bedroom altogether so that the room is quiet and dark. She also recommends not sleeping during the day in order to compensate for not sleeping at night, as you are only creating a vicious circle. It is much better, she says to get through the day and try and have an early night with no television. She went on to say that it is always a good idea to do some kind of exercise, preferably during the morning, but never during the last three hours before your normal bedtime. Doctor Canellas finally recommends to avoid taking sleeping pills and if you do, only when prescribed by your doctor.

Passport offer for Creative Employment Spanish exiles

Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, made a statement this week outlining new ideas for the creation of employment. Among the measures is the idea to pay employers 1,500€ a year for taking on those unemployed with family responsibilities, but the main new idea is to give a partial moratorium for mortgage payers when they lose their jobs. The help will be for a maximum of 50% of the debt that is owed, with a maximum amount of 500€ a month, and can be put off for a maximum period of two years, and only on mortgages where the total amount is less than 170,000€. The help will also be made available for self-employed or autonomous workers, but in their case they will have to be inactive and have families to support. It’s thought that some 500,000 people could benefit from the new measures. The Prime Minister also confirmed an earlier statement that the time granted for a home savings account to be valid is to be extended. The measures are to be approved in the cabinet meeting on Friday and Zapatero said that the measures show the Government’s main objective is to support those families with most difficulties.

Descendants of people who fled Spain during the country’s civil war are to be allowed to apply for citizenship. The decision will allow an estimated 500,000 children and grandchildren of civil war-era exiles to seek to return. That number is believed to include 300,000 people in Argentina alone, Spain’s government says. The measure is part of new legislation passed last year that aims to compensate and rehabilitate victims of Spain’s 1936-1939 civil war. An estimated 500,000 people died in the civil war, which left Spain as a dictatorship under the rule of the Fascist General Francisco Franco. Descendants of Spaniards who left the country for fear of political persecution or economic hardship between 1936 and 1955 will now be able to apply for nationality before 2011. Spain’s government has said those who accept any offer of citizenship would not be required to give up their current passports. Thousands of Spaniards fled their home country during the

war, which saw the Nationalists defeat the Republican armies. An estimated 500,000 people died in the conflict, which divided Spain sharply along ideological lines. The country only began a transition to democracy after the death of Gen Franco in 1975. As part of the new law, the current Socialist government will now be allowed to embark on an effort to remove Franco-era symbols and rename roads, avenues and squares. Passing the law of restitution - of which the citizenship offer forms a part was controversial in Spain, where opposition conservatives complained the legislation reopened old wounds. Elderly former members of the International Brigades, the collection of anti-fascists who travelled to Spain to fight Gen Franco’s forces, will also be eligible for citizenship under the new law. Previously members of the International Brigades would have been required to give up their other nationality to accept a Spanish passport, the Associated Press reported.

IN BRIEF

TIGER, TIGER...

The European Commission in Brussels considers that the recession in Spain will last for all of next year, and that unemployment will be over 15% in 2010. They consider that growth will fall by 0.2% next year and only place Ireland in a worse situation than Spain. The entire Eurozone is also forecast to enter into recession and will only come out of it in 2009. Spanish Minster for Employment and Immigration, Celestino Corbacho, had already admitted that unemployment will continue to grow in Spain until the second half of 2009.

A Siberian tigress in Madrid Zoo attacked and killed another in front of dozens of visitors on Monday. The Zoo has confirmed that Trini killed Blanca in a fight for hierarchy in what keepers said was a chance incident. One witness, quoted by 20minutos.es, complained about the ‘passivity of the employees’ as he saw it, and reported that the fight generated a great deal of noise. He said the pubic thought the animals were playing to start with, but minutes later there was blood and some of the children

New regulations in Spain from Saturday mean that taxes and other extra charges can no longer be hidden in advertising for airline tickets. Airlines have to show the final price in all their publicity from now on, with fuel surcharges and airport taxes included. It’s an E.U. initiative designed to allow the public to better compare offers in the marketplace.

present started to cry. The injured Blanca had fallen into the water by this time, and there was nothing keepers could do to stop her drowning. A zoo spokesman said the two tigresses had shared the same cage for sometime and there had been no previous problems. Animal group WWF/Adena voiced their concerns as the tiger is a protected species, and they considered that special activities should have been in place to reduce the stress of such animals being held in captivity.

Keepers thought the fight was over hierarchy, but those public present have said that the Zoo employees did little. Well... would you step in?

BUS SERVICES The bus services on Menorca are brilliant! They are clean, punctual and cheap, and they pretty much cover the entire island. To give you an idea of the cost of travel, the most expensive journey is Mahon (Maó) to Ciutadella at 4.25e. Most tickets are under 1.50€. A few words of caution though… some of the services are fairly infrequent, so plan your journey carefully! As mentioned above, the buses are usually spotlessly clean, and they discourage the consumption of food and drink whilst travelling. Also, if you want to show off your tanned beerbelly, you can’t! Shirts must be worn. Only coins and 5€, 10€ and 20€ notes are accepted, so you’ll have to find somewhere else to exchange your hooky fifties! There’s access for the disabled only on Lines 01, 02 and 03. Finally, whilst every effort is made to ensure that these timetables are accurate and up to date, it’s always worth double-checking with the transport companies before travelling.

HENRY PATCH: READ, BE HUMBLE, AND NEVER COMPLAIN AGAIN

Henry John “Harry” Patch was born 17 June 1898 and is, at the age of 110, the second-oldest living man in the UK and the tentholdest verified man in the world. He is also the last British soldier to have fought in the trenches of the Western Front during the First World War, and one of two overall remaining. The other one is 108-year-old Frenand Goux of France, who did so for one week and came out unscathed, unlike Patch and the last Alpine Front veteran, 110-year-old Delfino Berroni of Italy, who died on 26 October 2008. Patch was born in Combe Down, a village in Somerset, England. Before the Great War, he worked as an apprentice plumber in Bath. During the war, Patch was conscripted into the Duke of Cornwalls‘s Light Infantry, serving as an assistant gunner in a Lewis Gun section. He was a private at the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917(also known as the Third Battle of Ypres). After the war, Patch returned to work as a plumber, during which time he spent four years working on the Wills Memorial Building in Bristol and, during the Second World War, a fireman.

As of September 2008 he is the United Kingdom’s oldest retired firefighter. Patch featured in the 2003 television series “World War I in Colour“, and was quoted as saying “...if any man tells you he went over the top and he wasn’t scared, he’s a damn liar.” For his service in the First World War he has the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He said of the trenches, “The trenches were about six feet deep, about three feet wide - mud, water, a duckboard if you were lucky. You slept on the firing step, if you could, shells bursting all around you. Filthy.” On Shell Shock, “An officer would come down and very often shoot men as cowards. That man was no more a coward than you or I. He just could not move. That’s shell shock. Towards the end of war they recognised it as an illness. The early part of the war - they didn’t. If you were there you were shot. And that was it.” On Death, “I came across a Cornishman, he was ripped from his shoulder to his waist - shrapnel. He was laying there in a pool of blood. As we got to him, he said, ‘Shoot me.’ He was beyond all human aid. Before we would pull out the revolver to shoot him, he died. And when that fellah died, he just said one word: ‘Mother.’ It wasn’t a cry of despair. It was a cry or surprise and joy. I think - I am sure his mother was in the next world

to welcome him. I lost all my faith in the Church at Passchendaele and at Pilkem. I will never forget it.” On The Cost, “It wasn’t worth it. No war is worth it. No war is worth the loss of a couple of lives let alone thousands. The First World War, if you boil it down, what was it? Nothing but a family row. That’s what caused it. The Second World War - Hitler wanted to govern Europe, nothing to it. I would have taken the Kaiser, his son, Hitler and the people on his side . and bloody shot them. Out the way and saved millions of lives. It just isn’t worth it.” In 1918 he was demobbed. In the same year he married Ada Billington from Hadleigh, Shropshire. They were together for 58 years

until her death in 1976. They had two sons. Both have predeceased him. On the 27 September 2008 in a private ceremony attended by just a few people, Harry Patch opened a memorial on the bank of the Steenbeek at the point where he crossed the river in 1917. The memorial reads:- “Here, at dawn, on 16 August 1917, the 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, 20th (Light) division, crossed the Steenbeek prior to their successful assault on the village on Langemarck. This stone is erected to the memory of fallen comrades, and to honour the courage, sacrifice and passing of the Great War generation. It is the gift of former Private and Lewis Gunner Harry Patch, No. 29295, C Company,

7th DCLI, the last surviving veteran to have served in the trenches of the Western Front. The press has frequently suggested the idea of a state funeral for Britain’s last WWI veteran. But when asked in 2007 how he would like to be remembered, Harry rejected the idea of any special arrangements for him, but accepted the principle of a state funeral as a mark of respect for the generation who fought in WWI. Harry said his personal wish was to be buried in a private ceremony alongside his family in Monkton Combe Church where his parents were married and his parents and brothers are buried. This weekend, buy your poppy, do your 2 minutes silence, and remember Henry Patch and his fallen comrades.

THE WEEK’S SPORTING HIGHLIGHT: Joe Calzaghe plans to bring the curtain down on his glittering career after his November 8 fight against American Roy Jones Jr. at Madison Square Garden. Welshman Calzaghe, who has a 450 record including 32 knockouts, will take on Jones for The Ring magazine’s light-heavyweight crown. “It is probably going to be my last fight,” the former super-middleweight and light-heavyweight champion said during a conference call on Tuesday. “I’ve been fighting for 25 years and I just don’t feel like fighting any more. It’s very, very important to me to retire undefeated,” he said. “To face a great former champion at such a great arena, it’s a fairytale come true.” Jones, 39, is an eight-times former world champion in four weight classes with a 52-4 record including 38 stoppages. For much of his career, he was regarded as the greatest pound-forpound fighter in the world. Three consecutive defeats in 2004 and 2005 -- two of them by knockout -- diminished his stature but Jones has since claimed three more victories, including a unanimous decision over Felix Trinidad in his last bout in January.

LAUGH? I NEARLY WET MY KNICKERS! TRIVIA Three tortoises, Mick, Andy and Roy, decide to go on a picnic. Mick packs the picnic basket with beer and sandwiches. The trouble is that the picnic site is ten miles away So, it takes them ten days to get there. When they get there Mick unpacks the food and beer. “Ok Roy give me the bottle opener” “I didn’t bring it” says Roy “I thought you packed it” Mick gets worried, he turns to Andy, “Did you bring the bottle opener?” Naturally Andy didn’t bring it. So they’re stuck ten miles from home without a bottle opener. Mick and Andy beg Roy to go back for it. But he refuses as he says they will eat all the

sandwiches. After two hours, and after they have sworn on their tortoise lives that they will not eat the sandwiches, he finally agrees. So Roy sets off down the road at a steady pace. 20 days pass and he still isn’t back and Mick and Andy are starving, but a promise is a promise. Another 5 days and he still isn’t back, but a promise is a promise. Finally they can’t take it any longer so they take out a sandwich each, and just as they are about to eat it, Roy pops up from behind a rock and shouts, “I KNEW IT’....I’M NOT BLOODY GOING!” We’d like to thank Steve for the joke we published last week. The only printable joke he has!

“Fortnight” is a contraction of “fourteen nights.” A bathometer is an instrument for indicating the depth of the sea beneath a moving vessel. A ‘jiffy’ is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second. A Sphygmomanometer measures blood pressure. A typical lightning bolt is two to four inches wide and two miles long. Any month that starts on a Sunday will have a Friday the 13th in it. If the sun stopped shining suddenly, it would take eight minutes for people on earth to be aware of the fact. Nearly 50% of all bank robberies take place on Friday. Ten inches of snow equals one inch of rain in water content.

FUNNY OLD WORLD! Five members of Conservative-run Backworth District Council were forced to resign today when a leaked memo revealed that 12,000 tons of meaningless newspapers were printed and distributed in the last six months simply to help meet government recycling targets. Minutes of a secret council meeting revealed that take-up of the district recycling scheme had been relatively poor due to the need to sort seventeen different types of materials into separate colour-coded bins. Newspaper recycling, however, was well established and it was proposed that the Council simply print its own local paper in order to increase the weight of material being pulped. ‘Nobody reads past the first few lines of this sort of thing’ commented one anonymous ex-councillor, ‘so we had one of the members write a particularly dull front-page item about the workings of local government, called the paper ‘Window on Your Council’ and filled the remaining 45 pages with the achievements of made up council departments in parts of the borough that didn’t actually exist. It worked a charm, and with a great banner saying ‘Please recycle me’ in green across the top, we estimated that 98% of them went straight from the doormat into the recycling box.’ The same paper was then successfully distributed every four weeks for nearly seven months, until a pair of seven-year old girls, looking for something to line a gerbil’s cage with, found the paper and asked one of their mothers to take them to the new council swimming pool in ‘Narnia Ward’. Realising immediately that something was amiss, the mother then contacted a real local paper and the scam was uncovered. ‘And we would have gotten away with it, if it hadn’t been for those pesky kids – and their gerbil’ said a council insider. A huge national outcry was expected to follow, but it transpires that once readers have pulled out the small ads page for ‘Personal Services’ the local paper goes straight in the recycling bin as well.

LA LIGA

BARCELONA HIT THE TOP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 18 MONTHS Real Madrid drop two points behind new leaders Barcelona after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Almería on Sunday evening. Raúl headed Bernd Schuster’s side in to the lead from Higuaín’s cross shortly before half time, but Casillas had to make two or three stops later on as the home team came looking to equalise. And with ten minutes to go Piatti got on the end of Crusat’s cross to volley a shot past the keeper and save a point for locals. Madrid stay in third spot, level on points with Valencia and one behind Villarreal. Sevilla lost ground on the leaders after they were beaten 3-2 by Valladolid earlier in the day. Jesús Navas set up Renato and then scored himself to put the Andalusians two up with half an hour gone. But Luis Fabiano got himself sent off for a second bookable offence, and shortly before the break Jonathan Sesma headed one back from Mendunjanin’s cross. Half time substitute Canobbio levelled the scores soon after the restart, and then struck the winner with an impressive free kick a few minutes later. Getafe’s no-nonsense football is not liked much by their fans, but Víctor Muñoz’s side are level with sixth placed Atlético Madrid after drawing 1-1 at Recreativo. The hosts took the lead when Javi Guerrero headed in Aitor’s cross soon after the restart. However they were left with ten men when Iago Bouzón picked up a second booking, and Albín beat Riesgo with a glancing header from Granero’s free kick to level the scores near the end. Deportivo are a point behind Getafe after a convincing 0-3 win over Betis. All the goals came after the break, Riki heading in Guardado’s cross on the hour mark to open the scoring. Lafita made it two with a spectacular shot soon afterwards, and Sergio García was sent off with a second booking for diving before Lafita wrapped things up with his second of the night near the end. Espanyol are level with Depor after a narrow 1-0 victory over Osasuna. Tamudo fired a first half penalty wide and then hit the bar before he finally beat Roberto on the hour mark. But it was enough to take the three points and leave Camacho’s side firmly anchored to the bottom without a win to their name

all season. Sporting Gijón are also on twelve points after a 3-1 win over Numancia. Manuel Preciado’s side beat their opponents in the cup only four days ago, and although they fell behind in the twentieth minute to a Goiria strike, Luis Morán brought them back level by the break. And in the second half Bilic headed them in to the lead and then converted a penalty to make it five wins in a row for the Asturians. Barcelona returned to the top of La Liga for the first time in almost one and a half years after a 1-4 victory at Málaga. Heavy rainstorms meant the match almost didn’t take place, but that didn’t worry Xavi, who opened the scoring with a well struck free kick in the fifth minute. Duda equalised seven minutes later, but Messi beat Arnau for a second time soon afterwards to put his side back in front. Xavi got his second of the night after Henry headed back Eto’o’s cross soon after the restart, and Dani Alves wrapped up an eleventh win in a row with a long free kick which Weligton deflected in to his own net. Later in the evening last week’s leaders Valencia were beaten 2-4 by Racing Santander, their first defeat of the season. Tchité put the Cantabrians ahead after Munitis set him up midway through the first half, and although Villa levelled the scores from the penalty spot a few minutes later, Tchité restore

the lead with a snap shot from outside of the area after the restart. Joaquín equalised again after Toño dropped a corner at his feet, but Tchité headed a Munitis free kick past Renan to complete his hat-trick, and Albelda put through his own net near the end. Villarreal also scored four away from home, a 1-4 win at Athletic Bilbao helping them forget the humiliating midweek cup defeat at Poli Ejido. Angel won the ball in midfield and set up Rossi for the first goal midway through the first half, but Etxeberría made it all square with a header from a David López corner four minutes later. Pires made it two though after the restart, Cazorla ran through the defence for a third, and substitute Altidore scored number four less than a minute after coming on. Atlético Madrid are back to

sixth in the table pending Sunday’s games after beating Mallorca 2-0. Kun Agüero returned to the side to score both goals midway through the first half, the first with a lob over Moyà after Forlán had headed on Maniche’s long ball, and the second from an Antonio López cross. After that though it took a first rate performance from keeper Leo Franco to stop the visitors from getting back in to the game.

ANOTHER WIN FOR THE FOOTBALL 7 LADS The Menorca Home Care team have definitely turned their campaign around. After three defeats in their opening three games, they have now clocked up back to back wins. Last Sunday the team put n another super performance again coming from behind. Sloppy defending from a long throw ten minutes into the game showed up what is probably one of the few weaknesses this team has. They find it difficult to hit the ground running and concentration seems lacking in the opening quarter of an hour. Once it clicks in though, the teamwork and winning mentality is there for all to see. It was also on display at training the previous Tuesday when fourteen guys turned up in appalling conditions to put the time and effort in. A hat trick from Gaz and another terrific free kick from Martin left the lads in control at 4-2 going into the final stages after one player from each team had been sent off. Although they were pegged back to 4-3 right at the death, this was a more comprehensive win than the score line suggests.

DARTS LEAGUE OFF TO A FLYER Two 180s is the highlight of the Windsor vs Delfin game A 180 apiece by Windsor’s Javi Pons and the Delfin’s Colin Jenkins was the highlight of the opening round of games in the new Winter Darts League. Remarkably both top scores occurred in the same game. For Javi it was his first ever maximum, never having even previously achieved the feat on a prectice board! For the record the visitors, the Delfin, secured the competition points with a comfortable 6-3 win. Across town the title holders, Es Castell’s San Mames, put down a marker for the season to come courtesy of a 6-3 win against the Casino. Once again Diego’s team look as if they’ll be challenging for the title. Punta Prima’s Anchor ac-

counted for Hallissy’s and Castillo B defeated the Fun House A, both 6-3. The biggest win of the day went to Smithy’s who crushed Fun House C 8-1, their only defeat coming in the mixed pairs. Fixtures this coming Tuesday are: Division A Casino vs Windsor Castillo A vs Anchor Delfin B vs Castillo B Fun House A vs San Mames Hallissy’s vs Skippy’s Division B Aloha vs Coach & Horses Bar Pons vs Smithy’s Champs vs Fun House C Fun House B vs Bar Pins Sa Grava vs Delfin A

They say the league table doesn’t lie but in the case of ViveMenorca, perhaps it does for they also received a kick in the teeth as they almost clinched a thrilling and unlikely victory at high flying Gran Canaria in yet another close fought game involving the Balearic side. With more luck Ricard Casas could have been celebrating a healthy league position but after losing 76-72 they find themselves still with only one win and third from bottom. The game was tied 72-72 after the effervescent Pooh Jeter scored for the visitors. Marcus Norris then gave Granca the lead with six seconds left only for Menorca to turn the ball over as Bazdaric unforgivably travelled and with that call, it blowed their chance of forcing overtime or nailing a three to win. That left Mario Fernández to ice the cake for Granca who had Carl English to thank for 20 points as well as another fantastic performance from British big man Joel Freeland as they moved to fourth spot in the table. This Sunday the island team travel to meet Fuenlabrada, start 12.30.

ISLAND UNION CLUB START WITH DEFEAT Menorca rugby club fell to a 14-5 defeat in their first game of the season last Saturday. The team travelled to Mallorca to take on Corsaris, last season’s bottom placed club, but despite being better prepared for the season than ever before they were unable to return with the points. Last season the team had just 13 players available for the first game. This year 22 travelled. Jason Boas and Paul Bolton, captain and vice-captain respectively, were unavailable for the match They found themselves up against it from the 15th minute after having a man sent off. The first half finished without a try but with a strong defensive display from the Menorca lads, in particular hooker Eric Dittman. The second half started well for Menorca. They scored their only try after good work by Jaume Pons took him to within a few metres of the line where Moises Borras took over and forced the ball over the line to score. The try was not convert-

ed though and the match entered a very open phase when either team could have scored. The numerical advantage began to show and it was the Mallorcans who scored next. A very good try after good teamwork and they also made the conversion to take the lead. Menorca had plenty of opportunities to score in what turned out to be a very open game. In the dying minutes however, Corsaris scored their second try after great individual play by their centre. They were successful with the conversion and the game ended 14-5 in favour of the Mallorcan team. Menorca were reasonably content with their performance with Juan Petrus especially having a good game. This Sunday, the 9th November, the lads take on last years champions, Bahia Rugby Club. Anyone wanting more information about matches, sponsorship, or training, can ring the club on 686 957 874
