Located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., Macart Discovery Center functions as the National Park Service’s new Center for Urban Ecology. Utilizing the street edge and the imposing hill created by the reservoir, the positioning of the building and its orientation creates a sense of place for it inhabitants and encourages exploration for the curious observers. Macarthur Blvd and Elliot Pl NW facade offers a modest yet amicable facade. Courtyard elevations offer a more revealing view into the reclaimed landscape, yet through the layering of its plane, much remains to be discovered beyond the walls. Material selection, orientation, & passive site strategies such as a constructed bog are a few sustainable practices imlemented into the site.

The Net Zero Headquarters located in the historic Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. is the capital’s newest hub for green design. Central to the building’s design is the lobby atrium, where open-forum discourse on how to reach global carbon neutrality may occur. The atrium also serves as the building’s primary vertical circulation. The 30 ft. atrium curtain wall and clerestory windows allows for ample light to enter within the building where high traffic rooms are located. Interior circulation is located at the core of the building while public an private rooms flank the party wall and facade.
The building utilizes a greywater recycling system to reduce source water consumption as well as geothermal heating and cooling with the use of a concrete floor to radiate heat. Photovoltaic arrays provide adequate electrical demands for workers and visitors. Building materials are CLT wood, slate siding a recycled wood for interior finishes and were chosen based on their low embodied carbon.

The Butterfly Pavilion imagines an outdoor space where air and lightness are themes of the location. Surface modules of varying size openings are dictated by a curve attractor nearest the edge of the “wings” and axial spine of the canopy. The surface module also studies how light and shadows interact with the structue as well as mimic the porosity of birds bone density which give them the ability to fly. The high polish steel also serve as a physical reflection of human aviation successes.
Curve Attractor
Utilizing Curve Attractors as a means to create the canopy, the chronologically listed modules are distributed closest to the curve.

Inspired in part by the Cloud Gate, The Hedge pavilion is centered around fluidity. The high polished steel is made to resemble mercury, one of the few metals that exist in a liquid state at room temperature. During certain months of the year, the casted shadows give the impression of moving waves, contributing to the overall theme of dynamism.
