ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: JEFF BARON

Jeff Baron is an American novelist, playwright and screenwriter. He earned his degree in film production at Northwestern, an M.B.A. from Harvard and left a successful corporate career to be a writer. His first play, Visiting Mr. Green, a 1998 Drama League Best Play nominee, enjoyed a long and successful run at New York’s Union Square Theatre with Eli Wallach in the title role. It also has had successful productions worldwide, with over 500 productions in 23 languages and 50 countries. In 2001, Baron was awarded the KulturPreis Europa for Visiting Mr. Green.

Baron is the author of I Represent Sean Rosen and Sean Rosen Is Not for Sale, published

by Greenwillow/HarperCollins and the Electro-Pup series, which he developed through visits to elementary schools around the U.S. He has written prime-time series on all the major TV networks, and the libretto for the opera Escape, which was commissioned by the Los Angeles Opera. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Hello everyone and welcome back to live theatre! I am thrilled to be here, and have so very much enjoyed preparing this show for you tonight. This is the fourth show I’ve directed here at the Mendocino Theatre Company. The other three have had an average of 4 actors playing an average of 67 characters in an average of 40 locations. Whew! But this time it’s different: two actors, two characters, one location. This gives me the opportunity to truly dive into the heart of the play.

Working with these two fine actors—one a veteran of the stage with a full resume, the other a newcomer whose resume is fresh and exciting. Watching them work together as a team fills my heart with joy. And I have had amazing designers along for the ride who have created an environment that, to me, is like another character on the stage.

Visiting Mr. Green is about relationships—not just the one you are watching come to life, but also those that are shared from our characters’ compelling stories. It reminds us how a chance encounter can truly change lives. It’s a sweet elixir in these troubled times with a lovely heart-driven story.

While playing with this play I’ve laughed and I’ve cried. I really loved putting this together for your first time returning to our seats, our brand new seats. So, leave your worries outside, take a load off for the evening, relax and escape into the magic that is live Theatre!

a member of the Mendocino Theatre Company acting ensemble since its inaugural production, The Visit, in 1977.

He has appeared in dozens of productions, including P.S. Your Cat is Dead, American Buffalo, The Rainmaker, The Miser, Speed The Plow, I’m Not Rappaport, Art, The Prisoner of Second Avenue, Proof, Copenhagen, The Sunshine Boys, The Gin Game, Tuesdays With Morrie, Bengal Tiger At The Baghdad Zoo, An Inspector Calls, Miracle On 34th Street, They Don’t Pay, We Won’t Pay and A Doll’s House, Part 2.

GUS MAYENO (ROSS) - Gus has been acting on the coast since before he can remember, starting with The Mendocino Theatre Company’s Jumpstart! when he was barely older than a toddler. His more recent appearances include Freddy in Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Anton in Operation: Revolution (Mendocino Community High School); Smee in Peter Pan (Gloriana Musical Theatre); Skylar in The Flick, and Scooter in Ideation (MTC).

After all that, he is finally old enough to play Mr. Green without makeup!

Away from the Coast, Bob has performed with Berkeley’s TheatreFirst, San Jose Repertory Theatre, San Jose Stage Company, Valley Shakespeare Festival, Ross Valley Players and Theatre Artists of Marin.

Gus was the stage manager for MTC’s staged reading of Tiny Beautiful Things in 2021. He lives in Mendocino and works as a freelance math tutor while not working with MTC. Gus holds a BA in Mathematics from Willamette University.

Mr. Cohen has directed some twenty MTC productions, most recently The Cemetery Club which was forced to close after its opening weekend in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

Bob has degrees from MIT and the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and is a graduate of the actor training program at The Drama Studio London at Berkeley.

RICCI DEDOLA (DIRECTOR) - This marks the 30 year anniversary of Ricci’s directing career! Visiting Mr. Green is the fourth play that she has directed for The Mendocino Theatre Company. First was The 39 Steps, Then came Bob, A Life in Five Acts.

The most recent play she directed for MTC was the last show that had a full run before everything shut down, William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged). While directing that play she took over one of the roles, broke her foot, and played 17 characters from a chair, while never leaving the stage. Boy were her arms tired!

Ricci has also had the privilege of directing two of the Mendocino Museum County Road Shows. She has also been directing the amazing Sherry Glaser since their meeting, sitting next to each other in this very theater, seven years ago. Ricci LOVES directing and performing for the Mendocino coast audiences, because they rock. She is proud to call Mendocino her home, and she can’t believe she’s been here ten years already!

PATRICIA PRICE (STAGE MANAGER) Patricia has stage managed many shows for Mendocino Theatre Company. Her first show was A Trip to Bountiful in 2011. Since then, she has been the SM for roughly 19 more shows, including the “longest running show in MTC’s history”, The Cemetery Club. Through the years she has served as an assistant stage manager, light and/or sound operator, rehearsal assistant, set designer, and props person for many other MTC productions. She is truly happy to get back to the theatre after these past two years!

Patricia’s first theatre job was as a dresser and backstage hand for La Cage Aux Folles. She was the assistant stage manager for Gloriana’s Broadway; stage manager for Rent in 2012 and Next to Normal in 2014; and set designer for Once Upon a Mattress and Mamma Mia for Gloriana Musical Theater.

Patricia is also producer and stage manager for local burlesque troupe Les Filles Rouge and the house manager at Crown Hall for the Mendocino Film Festival.

She is an ASE certified parts salesperson and manages NAPA Auto Parts in Fort Bragg. In her “free time” she is also a professional fire performer, and poi spinner/instructor. She is an overbearing but lovable mother and wife who couldn’t do ANY of this without their never-ending patience and support which she is eternally grateful for. She is very excited for the opportunity to work with her Mendocino Theatre Company family again and hopes to be part of many more shows in the area.

DIANE LARSON (SET DESIGN) - Diane be-

DALE COHN (SET DESIGN) - Dale is a multi-disciplinary artist and the technical director of the Mendocino Theatre Company. Dale started working with MTC as ASM for Luna Gale, and has since worked as stage manager for A Doll’s House Part 2 and Sherry Glaser’s Greatest Hits, The Mendo Years. She has enjoyed solving electrical puzzles as lighting tech for A Doll’s House, Part 2, William Shakepeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged), and The Cemetery Club.

Dale has also worked as stage manager for the Mendocino Music Festival; light operator for Symphony of the Redwoods; sound operator for the Mendocino Dance Project; and A/V for the Mendocino Land Trust. She has recently branched out into lighting design for Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things and set design for Visiting Mr. Green. Dale is very excited to be once again working with/learning from the wonderful crew at MTC!

She is a graduate of U.C Berkeley in Fine Arts and studied fashion illustration a t C h o u i n a r d ’s Art Institute. She has served as a board member of Mendocino Music Festival, Gloriana Musical Theatre Company, and co-founded the Performing Arts Production Alliance (PAPA) with Georgia Lucas. She has taught workshops for MTC to share information about painting techniques and approaching set design. Recent set designs for MTC include Morning’s at Seven , Or, The Flick, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Outside Mullingar, and The Cemetery Club.

ALLISON TUOMALA (COSTUME DESIGN) -

STEVE GREENWOOD (LIGHTING DESIGN) -

Born and raised in Fort Bragg, CA, Allison attended college at the City University of New York in New York City where they received a degree in Theatre and the Dramatic Arts. Some of their past work includes The Nightmares of Carlos Fuentes (CUNY), Colorblind’d (New York International Fringe Festival), and A Streetcar Named Desire (CUNY). Allison makes their Mendocino Theatre Company debut with Visiting Mr. Green and they’re excited to continue their theatre career at MTC.

Steve is a photographer, writer and stagehand living in Mendocino, and is the retired technical director of the Mendocino Theatre Company. Starting in 2001 with The Beauty Queen of Leenane at MTC, he has worked in many capacities for theater companies here on the coast including Gloriana Musical Theatre, Opera Fresca, the Mendocino Music Festival, the Mendocino Film Festival and the Mendocino Chamber Opera.

When they’re not typing up rehearsal reports or calling cues, Allison works as a freelance artist who creates paintings and collages.

Their work has been featured in the Fort Bragg Advocate News and the Ukiah Daily Journal, with pieces hanging in the Corner Gallery and Medium Gallery, both in Ukiah, CA.

JORDAN PRICE (ASM) - Jordan is 22 years-old and has been doing theater since she was ten. She is currently a college student at Mendocino College, where she is getting an Associate’s Degree in liberal arts.

She plans on getting her teaching credential and to be an elementary school teacher. She currently works at the Skunk Train, where she is a conductor and a railbike guide. She has worked many productions, on and off stage, for both the Mendocino Theatre Company and Gloriana Musical Theatre.

There is always a special thrill working on the first show of a new season, with fresh challenges and a sense of returning, and this is especially true after the darkened stages of the past two years. It’s great to be working again, especially with director Ricci Dedola and designers Diane Larson and Dale Cohen.

DAVE GEALEY (LIGHTING DESIGN) - Dave has been lighting theatre and opera productions up and down the coast since he moved to Fort Bragg in 1995, and has done theater work at San Francisco State University, Stanford University, and TheaterWorks.

Over the years he has designed the lighting for many Mendocino Theatre Company shows, including Wit, Copenhagen, Stop Kiss, Outside Mullingar, and Luna Gale.

BRUCE PRICE (ASM) - Bruce has been working behind the scenes since 7th grade with Gloriana Musical Theater and Fort Bragg High School Drama Club. He has done technical work on shows such as Wizard of Oz, Chicago, Into the Woods, and Fun Home. This is his first show with MTC.
