AN UPDATE HIGHLIGHTING THE LATEST PROJECTS, PROGRAMS, & GROWTH AT ANSHEI LUBAVITCH

ELUL 5784 | SEPTEMBER 2024

(FREE TRANSLATION)

To the congregants of the Shul Anshei Lubavitch, The president and the gaboyim, Shalom U’vracha!

[... I give over] my blessing to all the congregants and members of the Shul with their families, sheyichyu, in all that they need for their families, health, and abundant livelihood.

[It] is unnecessary to emphasize the great privilege to carry the name of the city of Lubavitch from where the matter of learning chassidus and the practice in the ways of chassidus emerged, from the times of the Tzemach Tzedek and beyond, and the name Lubavitch itself, expresses a complete ideology in life.

And as my saintly father-in-law (the Frierdiker Rebbe) related, the name Lubavitch (a small town in Lithuania), which in the Russian language means Ahava - love - was given at the time due to the fact that one of the founders of the town, one of the hidden Tzadikim, excelled in his love for people in general and to all beings that Hashem created.

The fact that Chabad Chassidim are associated with the name Lubavitch is not a coincidence, and as my saintly father-in-law (the Frierdiker Rebbe) said in the name of the holy Baal Shem Tov, everything that happens in this world is behashgacha protis, and so too in this case which indicates the deep connection of chassidus with the three loves, Ahavas Hashem, Ahavas Hatorah, Ahavas Yisroel (love of Hashem, love of the Torah, and love of Israel), which are indivisible, and which must be accompanied in the daily life of every Jew.

These three above-mentioned loves are expressed, to a certain extent, in a Shul, as in a Shul we pray, and we say veohavto es Hashem Elokecha (love Hashem your G-d) - Ahavas Hashem - we read the Torah, and we make a blessing, asher bochar bonu mikol om venosan lonu es torasoi (who chose us of all the nations and gave us His Torah) - Ahavas Hatorahand matters of Tzedakah are also done in Shul, which is an expression of Ahavas Yisroel.

[...] I close with my blessing to all congregants, materially and spiritually.

Letter FROM THE Rebbe

Rabbi

As the Elul vinten blozen, they carry with them an inspiring call for selfrefinement and deeper connection with one another. This month, characterized by its introspective spirit and preparatory energy for the coming year, urges us to awaken and elevate ourselves to our highest potential. Just as the Elul winds sweep away the summer heat, they also prompt us to shake off the spiritual and personal challenges that may have accumulated over the past year.

In this spirit, the Zohar’s teaching resonates profoundly: “Hisnari Mayofor Kumi,” - “Shake yourself up from the sand.” This metaphor illustrates that a chicken that has rolled on the ground faces the difficulty of removing all the grains of sand stuck in its feathers. Were we to attempt to clean it grain by grain, it would be an impossible task. However, with a single, vigorous shake, the chicken can rid itself of all the sand at once and be rid of the filth. Similarly, men darf zich upshoklen! if we really want to make a difference, we must give ourselves a vigorous shake and this will lead to being our very best selves; what we can do for ourselves is far beyond what anyone else can do for us.

Boruch Hashem, this past year, our Shul has experienced tremendous growth b’ruchniyus and b’gashmiyus. There are now minyanim a few times every day, and the ikar, the ‘crown jewel’ of our Shul, the increased shiurei chassidus in the mornings that are very well attended, along with the other shiurim and farbrengens. One of the main goals of our Shul is to be a place where yungeleit can go to mikveh, learn Chassidus, daven like a mentch with

a minyan, and raise their families in a chassidishe environment. The very backbone of our community is the incredible children’s programs and women’s initiatives. Also integral to our Shul community is the Sunday Kollel, the avos ubanim shabbos afternoon or motzei shabbos, the yeshivas erev, and even a bein hazmanim yeshiva. The members of our Shul, men, and women, continue to step up and create this vibrant community center where you can catch a shiur chassidus any time in the morning or a chavrusa in Likutei Sichos, gemara, halacha, or a farbrengen in the evening. Our members have also contributed generously to Maos Chittim and Gemach, as well as many other important programs and functions.

We are very grateful that we now move into the next phase of the Shul where we will, im yirtzeh Hashem, build a beautiful mikvah and renovate our Shul to be an even more inspiring place to daven and learn. We look forward to the day when the Shul will be full of yungeleit learning Chassidus, and davening in a beautiful Shul.

This past year has been one of the most challenging years for yidden in recent memory. Moving into the new year, every one of us has to shake up and recommit to the general goal of dirah betachtonim by dedicating ourselves fully to Torah, Mitzvos, to our families, to our community, and to klal Yisroel and be’ezras Hashem, before the beginning of the new year we will be zocheh to the Geulah haamitis veheshlama, bebirkas kesivah vachasima tovah shanah tovah umesukah!

Love you all,

A MESSAGE FROM THE Board

Anshei Lubavitch began as a class Shul in 2011. Originally Geshem Shul and then Congregation Shul, it rented various storefronts before moving to a second-floor walkup above a kosher pizza shop. Eventually, under the leadership of Rabbi Yossi Garelik, the Shul grew from a Shabbos Minyan club to a full-fledged Jewish community center, Boruch Hashem. From the three-hour Sunday Kollel that includes davening, learning, and brunch along with a children’s program to the numerous shiurim and farbrengens throughout the week. The Shul later opened a preschool and started a Women’s Circle, which is today one of the most active in the community.

In 2018, as the community grew and more space was required, the Shul leased the premises at 578 Albany Ave and, in 2022, purchased the building next door. The Shul is packed on Shabbos, and there are multiple minyanim every day. There are continuous chassidus shiurim every morning from 6:30-10:00 am, each one followed by Shachris and many other shiurim between Mincha and Maariv. The children’s program boasts eight classes for children ages 3-14, with as many as 200 children Ka”h, participating. The women’s programming has expanded to multiple times a month as well as an annual Shabbaton.

Additionally, there are a myriad of programs to assist the community’s families in their time of need. This includes meal trains for families of new mothers to financial assistance, such as a free loan society and direct grants for those who are going through a rough patch. We have published this pamphlet to update the community about the

status of the Shul, its programs, events, finances, construction, and plans for the future.

As the community continues to grow, we are now moving into the next phase. We have plans to renovate the Shul to serve the growing needs of the community, Bezras Hashem. We intend to make the Shul a beautiful space to host the many programs. The cost is estimated at about $250,000, and we hope to complete many of the renovations in time for Rosh Hashanah, 5785. (See the Construction Update Section in this booklet for a more detailed overview of our construction plans.)

We thank all of our devoted members who continuously support and volunteer to help the Shul and the community. The generosity and dedication of our members is what makes our Shul unique, as there are dozens of members who volunteer regularly to help the Shul with its various programs and events.

We hope you will join us in this next phase and generously donate to expand our community.

With tremendous gratitude to all our members and supporters,
