The Memphis Restaurant Association Message from the PRESIDENT

MRA’s New Executive Director, Sally Fienup

Dear Members & Friends, This has been a wild and busy start to 2017 for me, and I am sure for you and all of the others in our industry. We are past the election and inauguration of our new U.S. President, and we hope and pray that he will lead us in the right direction as a nation. We also confide in him to look out for the best interest of the entrepreneurs, small business folks and all of us in the hospitality and tourism industry. You also elected a new President of the MRA. I am humbled, honored and challenged to do the best job that I can for you, your employees and our customers. I have several goals to accomplish over the next two years, and I am sure that all of you will help us grow as an association. It is important for all of us to be supportive of each other and be advocates of our industry. There are many new restaurants opening up in our fine town that we feel should be members of our group. I’ll also say that there are some old timers that we need on board too. As a group, our voice is much louder when we are dealing with legislative issues on Capitol Hill in Nashville and in Washington, DC. As most of you know we will sadly miss Kimberly Carlson, our Executive Director of 7 + years. Kimberly has made a mountain of friends in our industry and others around town. She has done a superb job promoting the MRA. Kimberly is still in our industry, and we wish her the best in her new endeavor. As Spring commences and a new season abounds, I would like to introduce our new Executive Director, Sally Fienup. Our search committee was very blessed to have highly qualified candidates apply for the ED position. We are thankful that our fellow board member and restaurateur, Ryan Trimm, encouraged Sally to interview with us. Sally has only been in Memphis a little over ten years, but she is “ALL MEMPHIS” and brings a wealth of experience to the position! We are excited to have her with us. Please reach out and extend a warm MRA welcome Sally. We wish all small businesses the best, but in particular our restaurateurs and our close friends that support us. Respectfully,

Ernie Mellor

She has been practicing real estate for the past 6 years. Sally’s husband, Chris, is a life-long Memphian, and they have two daughters, Sally “Jo” and Lola. Their whole family enjoys Disney, yoga, and playgrounds! Welcome to the family Sally! Contact her at 901.860.5086 sally@memphisrestaurants.com

Looking for an additional location? Well, the Pink Palace is looking for a restaurant! The Pink Palace is the most visited museum in the state of Tennessee. It doesn’t have a restaurant. The Mansion has become the premier Memphis locale for wedding ceremonies and receptions; after all, every princess wants a palace. However, no restaurant. We even have two churches that meet here every Sunday. They would surely be the first to lunch… if we only had a restaurant. The Pink Palace is truly wonderful, if you are interested in an exceptional opportunity within one of Memphis’ premier attractions please contact Richard Pugh. 2017 MRA Restaurateur of the Year Associate Member of the Year & Pioneer Award Winners Lauren McHugh Robinson Huey’s Restaurants

Bobby Maupin West Tennessee Crown Distributing Company

2017 RESTAURATEUR OF THE YEAR

2017 ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF THE YEAR

Lauren McHugh Robin-

Bobby Maupin is the Key Account Specialist for wines with West Tennessee Crown Distributors. His career started in 1972 at the Spaghetti Store and the Mississippi River Company. Both restaurants were part of Dobbs House new concept division, and Bobby became part of the traveling team, opening stores across the country. After the company closed his division in 1976, Bobby took a server position at Trader Dick’s Truck Stop on Madison. He started picking up bartender shifts and within a month was the General Manager. About the same time, the Poplar Lounge became available for sale. He bought it and turned it into a late night destination place. The Poplar Lounge lasted a couple of years and as it was winding down, he was offered a job at Huey’s, where he and Thomas Boggs became life-long friends. He was bartending at The Half Shell, when he had a baseball accident and had to take a year off to recuperate. When he recovered, he started at The Bottom Line on Kirby Parkway, but shortly after, returned to Huey’s. One day sitting in Huey’s offices together, Thomas suggested to Bobby that he should explore opportunities in sales. He followed that advice and applied for a sales position with a locally owned wine and spirit wholesale house and was hired as an onpremise sales rep. A new beginning and a new career, and an important lesson learned from Thomas - by giving back to the community, the community will support your business. Bobby eventually found his home with Southwestern Wine and Liquors, now known as West Tennessee Crown Distributors. Working in the wholesale side of the business, he is able to give back to the community by donating his time, and, with the help of his company, product to many fundraising events. In partnership with the Memphis Zoo, the Wild World of Wine and Beers and Zoo Brew were created. Being on the wholesale side of the business has been very rewarding for Bobby. He has never considered himself to be a sales person, but more of a restaurant guy who happens to be in sales. He will tell you: “I have always tried to put the customer first. I have always believed in service and having a good relationship with your customer. And I have always believed in following through with every opportunity or challenge that would come my way, right or wrong. I LOVE THIS BUSINESS!”

son is the oldest daughter of Thomas and Charlotte Boggs. Lauren started working with her father at a very early age. By the age of 13, Lauren was making onion rings, salads, and other prep items in the kitchen. Eventually she began to work at Louie’s, Thomas’ other business interest. Lauren attended University of Tennessee at Knoxville, transferred to Memphis State University and graduated in 1987 with a BA in Business and Marketing, cum laude. She waited tables all through college. In 1988, she began working for National Bank of Commerce and in 1990, while working at NBC, she decided to go back and get her MBA in Management. She received her MBA in 1993. In June of 1993, Lauren’s dad talked her into coming on board at Huey’s. He was ready to open a third location in Cordova and he knew that Lauren would be the perfect fit as the General Manager. Lauren was promoted to Vice President of Operations in 1995. By 2003, Huey’s had added five new locations. She continued to work side-by-side with her father as he was steadily teaching her the ropes. In 2007 she was promoted to President of the Company. Lauren serves on the Board of Directors for Shelby Farms Park Conservancy and Leadership Memphis. She served on the board for Paragon Bank, and is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Memphis and a Graduate of Leadership Memphis class of 2007. She served several years with the Memphis Food Bank as the Co-Chair for Feed the Need and has worked with Family Link. Lauren has been named the 2015 Tennessee Restaurateur of the Year, an award presented by the Tennessee Hospitality and Tourism Association. She has also been named a member of the 2003 Top 40 Under 40 class, 2013 Super Women in Business class, and 2014 CEO of the Year finalist. She was married to her husband Steve, who passed away in 2011, for 22 years; together they raised their children, one daughter Katie Fisher and one son Sloan. She and her children are members of Christ United Methodist Church. In July 2015, Lauren married Edward Robinson and became a stepmother to Brandon and Michael Robinson. In her free time, she enjoys the beach, reading, exercising and spending time with her friends and family.

Frank Vernon The Bar-B-Q Shop 2017 PIONEER AWARD In the late 70’s, while working as an UPS driver, Frank Vernon and his wife, Hazel, opened a small diner called Frank’s Restaurant. Hazel, who was also a Memphis City School English teacher, assisted her husband in the diner at Broad Ave. & Scott in one of the old Harlem Houses. With the demise of that area, the restaurant closed and both Frank and Hazel resumed their normal jobs. Frank’s love for BBQ and weekly dinners at Brady & Lil’s turned into opportunity when one Friday night, Mr. Brady said that he was thinking of retiring. Frank replied, if you do, let me know, and the rest is history. After three years, The Vernons moved from their South Parkway location out east at Knight Arnold & Mendenhall. In 1987, they moved to Midtown and changed the name to The Bar-B-Q Shop. The Bar-B-Q Shop became a local Midtown favorite with a reputation for its sauce made from scratch. Bottling the sauce under the name, The Dancing Pigs Bar-B-Q Sauce, it’s now available in Kroger stores area-wide. The early 2000’s saw an expansion that doubled the size of the restaurant. In 2012, Mr. Vernon revamped his rib preparation, he created a ribsticking glaze, and then got The Bar-B-Q Shop’s ribs specially cut for the restaurant. This would all pay off in 2015 when the new Food Network Show “Top Five Restaurants” voted The Bar-B-Q Shop as #1 Ribs in America. The Bar-B-Q Shop was voted #1 in the MidSouth area by the Memphis Business Journal. Frank Vernon and The Bar-B-Q Shop has been showcased on The Bobby Flay Show, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman–twice, and mentioned in Southern Living and Bon Appetit. The Bar-B-Q Shop’s food has graced the cover of Memphis Flyer many times, as well as being ranked #1 in several of their polls. The Shop has become a destination point for people who are traveling to Memphis. It has cultivated a culture that welcomes newcomers to the Memphis area. The Bar-B-Q Shop has become a place that its customers consider home and a place where to bring their family. All of this was based around the influence of Frank Vernon, a family man who works to provide you the best barbecue possible and to create a place where you would bring your business associates, family and friends.
