2015 MEMPHIS REDBIRDS FIELD STAFF
MIKE SHILDT MANAGER
Mike Shildt arrives in Memphis for his first season as the Redbirds manager in 2015. The 46-year-old Shildt is the sixth manager in Redbirds’ 18-year franchise history and took over for Ron “Pop” Warner, who was named a minor league roving fielding instructor with the Cardinals organization. The 2015 campaign marks Shildt’s 12th season in the Cardinals organization and seventh as a minor league skipper. He carries an overall 333-284 career record (.540 winning percentage) over his previous six managerial seasons with three league championships in three postseason appearances. BRYAN EVERSGERD PITCHING COACH
Bryan Eversgerd returns to the Redbirds for his third season as pitching coach in 2015 and begins his 12th overall season in the Cardinals organization. Before arriving in Memphis in 2013, he spent four of the previous five seasons in the same capacity for the Double-A Springfield Cardinals (200809, ‘11-12) that culminated with a Texas League championship and George Kissell Award in 2012. Eversgerd was signed by St. Louis as a non-drafted free agent during a June tryout camp at Busch Stadium in 1989 and enjoyed a 12-year pitching career that included parts of four big league seasons with the Cardinals (1994, ’98), Expos (1995), and Rangers (1997). He pitched three seasons with Memphis from 1998-2000 and ranks 3rd in Redbirds’ career history with 156 relief appearances. He was the Redbirds’ winning pitcher when Albert Pujols hit a walk-off home run in the 2000 PCL Championship. MARK BUDASKA HITTING COACH
Mark Budaska begins his seventh season as the Redbirds hitting coach after six years working in the Boston Red Sox system, including four with Triple-A Pawtucket. Prior to his time with the PawSox, Budaska spent two years with Double-A Portland. In 2001, the Pennsylvania native enjoyed his most success as a coach, winning the Texas League Championship with the Angels’ Double-A affiliate Arkansas Travelers. The former switch-hitting outfielder played for 10 years in the Oakland Athletics organization, including two stints with the big league club in 1978 and 1981.

After going undrafted out of the University of San Diego, Albitz was signed as a free agent out of independent ball by St. Louis and played parts of three minor league seasons in the Cardinals organization from 2011-13. He appeared in 41 games in a Redbirds uniform during the 2012-13 seasons and hit his first career professional home run in his first Triple-A game on August 24, 2012. The 27-year-old is the founder of “Gloves 4 Troops,” a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that sends baseball gloves and baseballs to U.S. military members around the world during the offseason. WHO AM I? Pictured not so clearly is a former Memphis Redbird. It’s up to you to figure out the identity of the “face behind the facts”. Measure your Redbirds savvy by charting your batting average as you work your way through the clues.
1.000 My record with the Redbirds may have just been 8-5, but I did strike out 128 batters during my 20 starts for the club. .900 I was named the Minor League Player of the Year by USA Today and Baseball America in 1999. .800 I was also recognized as the Best Pitching Prospect by both Pacific Coast League and Texas League managers in Baseball America’s Best Tools Survey. .700 I was named Cardinals’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year in both 1998 and 1999 and participated in the Future’s Game at Fenway Park in ’99. .600 I was drafted in the second round by the St. Louis Cardinals in the same draft class as Jayson Werth, Troy Glaus, Lance Berkman, and Michael Cuddyer .500 I made my Major League debut on August 23, 1999 starting against Monreal, striking out six Expos over 5.0 innings. .400 I finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in 2000 behind Rafael Furcal. .300 My 194 strikeouts in 2000 established a Cardinals rookie record, beating out Dizzy Dean’s 1932 record of 191. .200 I started Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves and tossed a record five wild pitches. .100 While I started my career in St. Louis, I also played for the Royals, Braves, Nationals, Astros, and Mets – but I only ever pitched for the Cardinals. BatBoy I announced my retirement as a pitcher on March 9, 2005 to focus on becoming an outfielder. I then became the second player in history, after Babe Ruth, to hit 25 or more home runs in a season while having previously started 25 or more games as a pitcher. Turn to page 62 for the answer.

PITCH DELIVERY Pitchers will have 20 seconds to start their wind-up or begin their motion to come to the set position. The clock will stop and turn off as soon as the pitcher begins either motion. The timer will start when the pitcher has the ball on the mound while the batter is in the dirt circle around home plate.
The timer will be reset following an umpire’s call of time out, or after a dead ball. The clock will start when the pitcher is on the rubber and the batter is in the box. The timer will reset if a pitcher attempts a pick-off move or steps off the rubber with runners on base. The time clock can always be reset at an umpire’s discretion. If the clock reaches zero before a pitcher has started his wind-up or motion to become set, an automatic ball will be awarded to the batter.
INNING BREAKS The time clock will count down from 2:25 in between innings. The lead-off batter of an inning should be in the batter’s box with 20 seconds remain-
