ACCREDITATION
Fewer than 125 programs worldwide are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Journalism and Strategic Media at the UofM is one of them. Additionally, our Public Relations program is endorsed with a Certification in Education for Public Relations by the Public Relations Society of America.
Journalism and Strategic Media distributes more than $40,000 in donor-funded scholarships every year, in addition to scholarships offered by the University and the State of Tennessee. Recently, the department launched its inaugural Ida B. Wells-Barnett Scholarship, a new award in honor of a trail-blazing Black journalist and civil rights leader.
Journalism and Strategic Media has an extensive internship program that’s connected throughout the Mid-South and nationally. Graduates often say the experiences gained during an internship are among the best parts of their time at the University. All Journalism and Strategic Media students complete either an internship or work in student media as part of their degree requirements.
As the only program in the city with media-focused studies, Journalism and Strategic Media has the full support of local collaborators looking to invest in the next generation of professionals. Through dynamic guest speakers, on-campus events and professional organization involvement, our students are regularly exposed to mentorship opportunities no other nearby universities can offer.
TECHNOLOGY DIVERSITY
From remodeled computer labs with the latest software to photo, video and audio devices, Journalism and Strategic Media ensures no student is burdened with the high costs of industry-standard technology to earn their degree. Students have access to more than $250,000 worth of professional-grade cameras, microphones, lights and more.

Journalism and Strategic Media students, faculty and staff represent the full spectrum of diversity. Students can engage with peers and professors who share their identities and can learn from the perspectives of others who are different. Further, faculty expertise encompasses the full scope of the media industry. At the UofM, our differences make us a stronger community.
For students driven to be changemakers and storytellers, Journalism and Strategic Media boasts specialized curriculum in two majors housing seven different areas of study — Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Sports Media, Creative Mass Media, Advertising, Public Relations and Integrated Social Media — all informed by industry-standard practices, robust research and first-hand experiences.
Journalism and Strategic Media students are prepped to navigate an ever-changing media landscape, with ethics and innovation as our ideological cornerstones. Strategic communicators of tomorrow must be ready to think critically and employ the latest methods. That means curriculum is regularly updated, special topics classes are rotated each semester and new course offerings are introduced every academic year.
Through strategic media campaigns, student reporting, brand development, multimedia projects and more, our students created more than $2 million in pro bono work for the Memphis community in recent years. Learning Journalism and Strategic Media at the University of Memphis means learning how media make a positive contribution to society.
EARN YOUR DEGREE IN A CITY WHERE YOU CAN GET A JOB.
The University of Memphis is one of only a few accredited journalism and mass communications programs in the country located in a major city.
Being in a metropolitan area means students can get internships at premiere media outlets while in school and use those experiences to transition to a job in the city after graduation. Or, they can use their experiences to thrive in a major city elsewhere. Because media organizations are concentrated in urban areas, the experience offered at the University of Memphis gives students a strong foundation for their careers.
Additionally, our programs are unique offerings in the City of Memphis. This means employers, professional organizations and other collaborators in the community look to our students for mentorship and networking opportunities. Our students have shows on the airwaves, articles published in major outlets and start their professional journeys well before graduation.
