RIDGEWAY COUNTRY CLUB

On Sept. 3, 2009, ribbon-cutting ceremonies took place for the $1.5 million Frank L. Flautt Golf Center, located next to the Tigers Softball Complex on the University of Memphis’ Park Avenue campus. The Flautt Center provides both the Tigers and Lady Tigers teams with a state-of-the-art facility. The center includes a 400-yard driving range, complete with two tee areas, two putting greens and a chipping green. Inside the Flautt Center, Lady Tigers golfers are privileged to have workout areas, individual players’ lockers and indoor heated hitting bays, in addition to study, lounge and kitchen

areas. The facility not only provides the Lady Tigers with all the tools needed for golf practice, but also serves as a home for the team. The Frank L. Flautt Golf Center is equipped with the latest in video playback technology to allow players to hone their skills. High-tech video cameras are complemented with a V1 Video Analysis system, a swing playback software program and a FlightScope Dopple Radar Launch Monitor for tracking the flight of each ball that gets hit.

The host of the annual FedEx Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate, Ridgeway has kindly opened its doors to the Lady Tigers. The 230-acre course features Champion Bermuda greens and Zoysia grass fairways that provide a memorable playing experience. Practice facilities include a 300-plus yard driving range, as well as chipping and putting greens. An indoor practice facility also is on site.

In 1919, The Rex Club purchased 178 acres of land at 5854 Poplar, which is now Ridgeway Road, and constructed the first nine holes of golf, two tennis courts and a clubhouse. On Aug. 21, 1921, the name of the club was changed to the Rex Ridgeway Country Club. In 1935, four additional tennis courts were constructed, and in 1939, a swimming pool was built. On Dec. 27, 1941, the corporate name of the club was again changed, and it became known as Ridgeway Country Club. In 1950, the second nine holes of the golf course were completed.

Every golf program needs a home, and when the Lady Tigers are away from the Frank L. Flautt Center, Ridgeway Country Club provides the perfect place for the golfers to hone their skills.

Ridgeway Country Club is the oldest club in Memphis, as it was founded in 1861 as a young men’s club under the name of the Southern Club on the banks of the Mississippi. When Federal forces occupied Memphis in 1863, the commanding general objected to the name, hence, the name was changed to the Memphis Club. Several years later, the club’s name was changed to The Rex Club and occupied quarters over the Lyric Theater on Madison Avenue. On Jan. 15, 1908, the Club purchased a plot of ground at Dunlap and Madison and built the new home of The Rex Club.

When the Lady Tigers hit the road, they do so in style. Thanks to a donation from the Helen Hardin Charitable Trust, the team travels in a modern, top-of-the-line Mercedes Sprinter Van. “Miss Helen” — as the van is affectionately known to the players — is equipped with wireless internet, satellite radio and TV, as well as spacious seating for as many as six players. Wireless headphones are also available at each seat in the van. Whether it’s winding down from a tournament or hitting the books in preparation for upcoming exams, “Miss Helen” has everything the Lady Tigers need when they are on the road.

In 1971, the 5854 Poplar property was sold and the present land at 9800 Poplar was purchased. Ed Seay and Ellis Maples were hired as architects of the present golf course. In 1998, construction was completed on the present clubhouse.

At h l e t i c S D i r e c t o r - T O M B O W E N Tom Bowen took over as the University of Memphis Director of Athletics in June of 2012, and in only one year, he has the Tigers roaring into a new and exciting era. Bowen began his tenure with an athletics program poised to make a league move from Conference USA to the Big East. Despite the conference realignment carousel continuing to rotate nearly halfway into his first year, Bowen’s steady leadership helped Memphis become a charter member of The American Athletic Conference, which began its inaugural year July 1, 2013. The Memphis athletics leader played an integral role in the formation of The American Athletic Conference and was instrumental in bringing the league’s first men’s basketball tournament to the Bluff City in March of 2014. In addition to guiding Memphis through the conference move, Bowen placed his stamp on Tigers athletics. One of his first missions was to evaluate and restructure the athletics department. Bowen also came in with a plan to increase the department’s fundraising efforts to assist with facility upgrades. Under his direction, the Elma Roane Fieldhouse — home to Memphis women’s basketball and volleyball — improvements were completed with a state-of-the-art weight room, a four-lane training track, an elevated cardio platform, a players lounge and an enlarged training room with Grimm Tubshydroponic pools for injury rehabilitation. In November of 2012, Bowen received a gift of $2.6 million on behalf of the department from the Helen and Jabie Hardin Charitable Trust to support women’s athletics. The first phase in using the generous gift is underway with the redesign of the track and field complex on the University’s Park Avenue campus. The second construction phase is set to begin in the near future and includes a clubhouse for the Tigers softball program at its stadium. The new softball clubhouse plans include coaches offices, meeting and recruiting rooms, indoor pitching and batting areas, athletic training room, equipment room and laundry room. In the competition arena, Bowen’s first year proved a rather successful one. After a tough start, the Tigers football squad rebounded to close the campaign with three-straight victories and finished the year with four league wins, the most since 2008. The men’s basketball squad posted the sixth 30-win season in school history, swept the Conference USA regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round. The men’s tennis squad won the program’s first Conference USA championship and received a second-consecutive NCAA Championships berth. The Tigers won their first NCAA Regional with an upset over Ole Miss and advanced to the program’s first NCAA Championships Sweet Sixteen. The women’s tennis team also made history with its first

NCAA Championships appearance as a team. The men’s golf squad earned an NCAA Regional berth for a third-straight year. The track and field squads closed out the athletic year by sending a school-record nine student-athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, with five earning All-America honors. In the classroom, Memphis continued its strong performance in Bowen’s first year. Memphis led the league with 228 student-athletes on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was second in the number of C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal recipients with 54. Memphis athletics also had a Conference USA-best four student-athletes receive the league’s Scholar-Athlete Award for their respective sports and had four of its programs earn C-USA Sport Academic Awards, the most of any in the league. Furthermore, Memphis athletics had four programs receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards for their exceptional Academic Progress Rate (APR). Prior to taking his current post, Bowen served as the athletics director at San Jose State University from 2004-12. While at San Jose State, the core of Bowen’s mission was building a “Culture of Champions” academically, athletically and in the community. He led the Spartan Foundation, the department’s fundraising component, through consistently challenging and uncertain economic conditions to unprecedented fiscal heights. The Spartans produced annual budget surpluses four-straight years and re-invested their gains back into their student-athletes and teams. In 2008, San Jose State was named as one of 12 Division I universities cited for Overall Excellence in Diversity in the most recent national study by Texas A&M University on behalf of the NCAA. Bowen’s proven administrative and managerial record at San Jose State resulted in national appointments in college athletics. He

served as one of eight Football Bowl Subdivision directors of athletics on the 24-member NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, an appointment that ended in 2011. In 2009, Bowen was one of 12 named to serve as a mentor to aspiring women and ethnic minority athletics administrators in the NCAA Fellows Leadership Program. He was the Tournament Director for the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Division I Championship first and second rounds games played in San Jose. Bowen joined the staff at San Jose State after serving three years as the Director of Community Affairs and the executive director of the 49ers Foundation for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. His Division I experience at the collegiate level includes athletics administration positions at the University of California and Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. The 1983 graduate of the University of Notre Dame majored in theology/sociology and spent six years studying for the priesthood with the Holy Cross Fathers. Bowen went on to earn a master’s degree in administration/education from the University of San Francisco in 1990. Active throughout the entire Bay Area, he was named to the San Jose Mercury News’ Top-25 Most Powerful Sports Figures in the Bay Area. Bowen served on the board of the San Jose Sports Authority, and he was an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco School of Sports Management and at San Jose State University’s Department of Kinesiology, where he taught sports management classes. He is a Level 2 certified member of the College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) and has memberships in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He and his wife, Mia, are the parents of three children: sons, Andrew and Peter, and daughter, McKenna.

City of Memphis Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll,” the city of Memphis’ musical roots run deep. However, music is just a chapter in the history as well as the future of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Memphis, named after the capital of ancient Egypt, has big city amenities with a small-town feel. Whether you are a hardcore sports enthusiast, a history buff, a music aficionado, or you just like to relax and watch as boats travel the Mississippi River, Memphis has something for everyone. Downtown Memphis has continued to grow and thrive, and two of the most visible projects have been the construction of AutoZone Park and FedExForum. AutoZone Park is the home of the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A club. The 14,320-seat stadium includes 1,500 club seats, 48 luxury suites and is located at the corner of Third Street and Union Avenue across from the world-famous Peabody Hotel. The Memphis Tigers baseball team also plays some of its more high-profile opponents in the top-notch facility. The city’s newest downtown project is FedExForum, an entertainment arena that houses both the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association and the University of Memphis men’s basketball team. The $250 million state-of-the-art arena features a 35,000-squarefoot outdoor plaza where fans of all ages can gather before an event. The arena has over 100 points of sale for concession stands and four full-service restaurants. FedExForum is located one block south of Beale Street. Memphis’ musical roots can be traced to band leader W.C. Handy, who wrote the first blues song here in 1909, a campaign theme for Memphis mayor “Boss” Crump called “Boss Crump Blues” and later published as the “The Memphis Blues.” The sound soon caught on and blues bands filled the clubs along Beale. Young musicians who have performed along Beale include Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and B.B. King. Beale Street has rapidly become the entertainment center of Memphis, and visitors and locals alike enjoy the food and music offered in the various nightclubs. Where Beale Street meets the Mississippi River is Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekend-long event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival, which also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Located within a block of Beale is Gibson Guitar Memphis, which includes factory tours and cultural exhibits. Across the street is the Smithsonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum located at the FedExForum, which includes artifacts documenting music’s past. Memphis’ musical roots also include Stax and Hi-Records as well as Sun Records recording studio. Stax became known for “sweet soul music” through such artists as the MarKeys, Booker T.

goTigersgo.com

and the MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave and Isaac Hayes. The Stax Museum reopened on its original location at McLemore and Crump in the summer of 2003 and offers visitors a complete history of “Soulsville USA.” One of Hi-Records’ premier artists was Al Green. Sun Records’ most famous recording artist was Elvis Presley and also boasted Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash among its recording artists. Elvis Presley’s Graceland is one of the five most-visited home tours in America and is the most famous home in the United States after the White House. In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Over 600,000 visitors tour Graceland each year. Also located downtown is the beautiful Orpheum Theater, which serves as a venue for performances by Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and traveling Broadway shows, as well as the Orpheum Classic Movies series and other concerts. The city’s location makes Memphis a major distribution hub with two interstate highways intersecting the city. Memphis is also home of FedEx, the nation’s largest package carrier which makes Memphis International Airport the world’s busiest cargo airport. Over 500 commercial passenger flights originate from Memphis International each day. Ranked by The Sporting News as one of the “Top 50 Sports Cities In the Country,” the city of Memphis is a large metropolitan city with a hometown feel. From its big-city industry such as FedEx and the Memphis International Airport to its family recreation areas such as Shelby Farms and the Memphis Zoo, the city boasts all the amenities one would expect in a city with over 1 million residents, while retaining the charm and down-to-earth feel of a small town.

Shortly after TOM II’s death, the Tiger Guard began the search for a new tiger to serve as TOM III, and a stroke of good luck was realized in a discussion with the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Educational Center in Rock Springs, Wis. Faced with three new cubs born Aug. 31, 2008, after an unexpected pregnancy at their facility, founders Jeff Kozlowski and Jenny Meyer offered to donate one of their young tigers to serve as TOM III. TOM III was introduced at a press conference on Nov. 17, 2008, and the Tiger Guard officially presented him to the University on Nov. 22 during a football game against the UCF.

to the University in a ceremony at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Nov. 11, 1972, during a football game against the University of Cincinnati. TOM had initially been named ‘Shane’ at the suggestion of the breeder’s daughter. Once in Memphis, though, a contest was held to name the mascot. More than 2,500 entries were submitted. The list was ultimately reduced to two choices, Shane and TOM, which stands for Tigers Of Memphis. TOM won. In the fall of 1991, the Highland Hundred Tiger Guard received TOM II as a gift from Tom and Carolyn Atchison of Florence, Ala. TOM II served his university with pride for 17 years through 2008, passing away on Oct. 15 of that year.

2012-13 Review

When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, “We fight like Tigers.” The nickname was born. More and more the nickname “Tigers” was used, particularly in campus publications. But, it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use “Normals” or the “Blue and Gray” when referring to the University. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the “Teachers” or “Tutors.” The Tigers nickname would return, but not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis. For over 40 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis has been a Bengal Tiger named TOM. TOM attends all Tigers football home games, and he can also be found at many other University events throughout the year. TOM travels in style in a custom-designed, climate-controlled trailer and always with a sheriff patrol escort. As one of only two universities in America with a live tiger mascot, The University of Memphis is unique in its tiger tradition. As a project of the Highland Hundred, no public or University funds are used to provide for TOM’s needs, and no University resources are required in his care. TOM is a powerful and majestic symbol of the University of Memphis, and his presence presents constant opportunities to educate Tigers fans young and old through the preservation of one of the world’s most recognizable endangered species. The first Tiger, TOM, was procured by the Highland Hundred football boosters in 1972 and served the U of M faithfully for nearly 20 years until passing away in February of 1992. The Highland Hundred officially presented TOM

Not entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the American Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which members with ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in their quests for excellence. With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in 2013 — its debut season — consists of 10 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Louisville, the University of Memphis, Rutgers University, Southern Methodist University, the University of South Florida and Temple University. In 2014-15, East Carolina University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa come aboard. The 2015-16 season sees the U.S. Naval Academy join the ranks in football only. The American, which operated as the Big East Conference from 1979 to 2013, will immediately take a place at the forefront of Division I athletics, with schools that have played in a combined five Bowl Championship Series games, won four NCAA men’s basketball titles since 1999, and won eight NCAA women’s basketball championships since 1995. Among the league’s 2013 members, seven of The American’s 10 football teams have been ranked in the top 13 in the BCS since 2006. Eight of the 10 teams have been in the BCS top 25 in that span. The 2013-14 membership will also include the most recent NCAA men’s basketball (Louisville) and women’s basketball (UConn) champions.

The 2013 season will mark the final year of a six-year arrangement with ESPN that gives The American national exposure on ABC television and the ESPN family of networks. ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC will carry a minimum of 19 American home football games each season. Championship Week in December includes three American games on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. At least four American games are featured on ESPN’s Thursday-night package. In addition, ESPN Regional Television will continue to produce and distribute its Game of the Week package to a nationally syndicated audience, reaching more than 30 million homes. Most of these games also will be available as part of the ESPN GamePlan subscription service. Finally, a minimum of five home games will be carried on ESPNU. Following the 2013 football season, the American Athletic Conference enters new television partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports which will give the conference unprecedented national exposure. The football portion of the contract, which begins in the 2014 season, calls for nearly 90 percent of conference-controlled games on national broadcast or national cable platforms. The first American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which will be played in 2015, will be carried either on ABC or ESPN on Championship Saturday. In men’s basketball, the new television deal calls for all conference-controlled games to be televised, with more than 63 percent slotted for national broadcast or national cable - a minimum of 107 games. The entire postseason tournament will be

televised, including the championship game, which will be either on ABC or ESPN. Sixty percent of the American’s women’s basketball games will be carried on either national cable, regional sports networks or ESPN3. American Athletic Conference teams will have access to the pinnacle of college football’s postseason structure, both in the coming season and beyond. In 2013-14, the league champion will receive an automatic bid for the final edition of the Bowl Championship Series, including a spot in the VIZIO National Championship Game if it is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS standings. Moving forward, The American champion would be chosen for the College Football Playoff semifinals if it is among the top four teams following the regular season. Otherwise, the league would place its champion in either the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl or Peach Bowl if it is ranked higher than the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference. The American Athletic Conference administers to its membership from a state-of-the-art office located in Providence, R.I. The location of the conference headquarters — just steps from the city’s Amtrak station and 10 minutes from T.F. Green International Airport — gives the conference easy access to its member schools. The conference headquarters is equipped with a complete video production studio and small- and large-scale meeting rooms to accommodate the many coaches’ and administrators’ meetings held on-site each year.

stroke average. A five-time C-USA Golfer of the Week recipient, Steen won six individual titles and was named to the 2011 C-USA All-Tournament Team. Kathleen Glavin won medalist honors once, and Alex Aläng posted the program’s second-lowest, 54-hole C-USA Championships score at the 2010 event. The eight individual medalists under Harrelson are the most since King had 10 individual winners from 1995-2001. Harrelson’s teams have also excelled in the classroom. The past four years (2010-13), the Lady Tigers have received academic recognition from the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA), Womens’ Golf Coaches Association (WGCA), Conference USA and NCAA. For the fourth-straight year, the Lady Tigers received an NCAA Public Recognition Award for the program’s multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). The awards are given to programs whose APR ranks among the top-10 percent in their sports. Harrelson’s Lady Tigers also have earned individual academic accolades. This past season, five Lady Tigers were named WGCA All-American Scholars and three golfers were named to the C-USA All-Academic Team. Aläng, Julia Hodgson and Sarah Mathews earned both awards, and Natalie Turk and Ashleigh Whisenant joined the senior trio as WGCA honorees.

Beth Harrelson is in her sixth season as the Lady Tigers head coach in 2013-14 and continues to build Memphis into a nationally-recognized golf program. In her first five seasons, Harrelson’s squads have averaged seven top-10 finishes and four top-five performances per campaign. Overall, her clubs have a total of 34 top-10 showings and 20 top-five finishes, including eight tournament championships. The eight team titles in Harrelson’s tenure are the most under one coach in the program’s history. Among those top-five showings were back-toback-to-back fourth-place finishes in three consecutive Conference USA Championships (2010-12). The three-straight, top-five C-USA Championships performances are the program’s most since the Lady Tigers had seven-consecutive top-five showings from 1996-2002. In addition to team titles, the Lady Tigers have set other school marks under Harrelson. Her Memphis squads hold the school’s top-three lowest single-round scores, two of the lowest 36-hole scores (1st and 5th) and two of the 54-hole scores (both tied for 3rd). Individual golfers also have thrived under Harrelson’s tutelage. Marissa Steen (2008-12), a three-time All-Conference USA pick, holds the program’s lowest (73.9) and third-lowest (74.9) season

runner-up. Steen also won three individual titles, tying Stacey Tate for the most crowns in a season. Tate’s three individual titles came in 2006. Although the 2010-11 season somewhat overshadowed the 2009-10 and 2011-12 campaigns, those Harrelson teams produced great moments. The 2009-10 squad had eight top-10 finishes and six top-five showings, including two team titles. The Lady Tigers placed fourth at the C-USA Championships, posting the program’s third-lowest, 54-hole score (895). It is also Memphis lowest 54-hole total at the league’s postseason event. Individually, Aläng carded the second-lowest, 54-hole individual score (219) in Lady Tigers C-USA Championships history. In 2011-12, Harrelson’s Lady Tigers logged seven top-10 showings and three top-five finishes, including two tournament championships. The squad tied for fourth at the 2012 C-USA Championships. Two golfers — Steen (two) and Glavin (one) — combined for three individual titles. Harrelson’s first season (2008-09) as the Lady Tigers head coach saw her lead the squad to six top-10 finishes. Prior to taking over her alma mater’s golf program, Harrelson was an instructor at Memphis National Golf Club and also served as St. Mary’s High School golf head coach. A 1987 Memphis graduate, Harrelson participated on the Futures Tour for two years (1986-88), before moving to Scottsdale, Ariz., to work as an assistant professional at the TPC of Scottsdale during

the winter and at Stonebridge Golf Club (Collierville, Tenn.) the remainder of the year. In 1987, Harrelson won the Memphis Women’s Golf Association and Double Eagle Golf tournament. She also was the 1988 Tennessee State Tournament medalist. She returned to the city of Memphis permanently in 1990 and accepted as full-time position as the assistant pro at Stonebridge Golf Club. She became the golf instructor at Stonebridge in 1991 and held that position until 1998 when she moved to Quail Ridge Golf Club in Bartlett, Tenn., as the golf instructor. While working at Stonebridge Golf Club, she earned her PGA Class A membership in 1995. A Briarcrest High School graduate, Harrelson signed a volleyball scholarship with the University of Alabama, before declining that offer to attend Memphis. She arrived on campus in 1982 and played for head coach Diane Hale’s Tigers volleyball program. After redshirting the 1983-84 academic year, Harrelson made the transition to golf in 1984 and received the team’s Most Improved Player award for the 1984-85 campaign. As a senior, Harrelson was selected team captain and posted the team’s lowest scoring average. Harrelson, a 1999 M Club Hall of Fame member, also was inducted into the Briarcrest High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. She and her husband, Tim, have two daughters, Megan and Grace, and a son, Jon.

Steen, a three-time C-USA All-Academic Team pick, became the program’s first CoSIDA Academic All-District IV selection in 2011. Glavin also was named to the 2012 C-USA All-Academic Team. In the summer of 2012, six Lady Tigers were named NGCA All-American Scholar recipients, the most for a season in school history. The 2012-13 Lady Tigers, as a team, posted five top-10 finishes, including one title (Lady Eagle Invitational). Memphis finished in the top-eight at the conference tournament in every season that it was a C-USA member. Aläng led the Lady Tigers in 2012-13 with three top-10 finishes and her first tournament title. Aläng posted two of the program’s top-10 scores for 54 holes (218 at Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate/6th; 219 at Rainbow Wahine Invitational/7th). She finished her career with the program’s fifth lowest career stroke average at 77.1. The 2009-10 and 2011-12 campaigns were successful, but it was the in-between season — 2010-11 — that has been Harrelson’s best to date. In 2010-11, Memphis posted a school-record seven top-five finishes, including three tournament titles (Bobcat Invitational, UAB Fall Beach Blast, Lady Eagle Classic). The three team crowns were the most since the program also won three tournaments in 199697. The 2010-11 Lady Tigers also had eight top-10 showings, the most since the 2000-01 squad had 10 top-10s. The 2010-11 team placed fourth at the C-USA Championships, and Steen was the event’s individual

As an assistant from 1983-86, Andrews helped the Lady Tigers to 14 top-10 finishes, including a fifth-place performance at the 1986 Metro Conference Championships. Andrews has won the Memphis City Women’s Golf Championships title numerous times and has competed in major tournaments such as the Women’s Transnational Golf Association, Women’s Southern Golf Association and Women’s Tennessee Golf Association. A teacher of the game, Andrews has also contributed time to the development of junior golfers by working at several golf camps throughout the Southeast. A 1982 Christian Brothers University of graduate, Andrews was a four-year letterwinner in both basketball and volleyball. She was named to the 1981 NAIA volleyball All-Tournament Team and also earned all-conference honors in basketball. Andrews played golf as a child and began focusing on her game during her college years.

Sally Andrews is in her second stint as an assistant with the Lady Tigers and made her return to the program in the fall of 2012 after serving the past 20-plus years in the athletics department administration/compliance departments. Andrews first served as a Lady Tigers assistant coach from 1983-86, before taking over as head coach from 1986-91. In her first season back as an assistant, Andrews helped the Lady Tigers to five top-10 finishes, including two top-five performances. One of those two top-five showings was the Lady Eagle Invitational crown. During her head coaching tenure, Andrews guided the Lady Tigers to 31 top-10 finishes and 12 top-five showings, including four-straight Metro Conference Championships top-fives. From 1988-91, Andrews’ squads finished no lower than third place (1988-90, third place; 1991, second place). She also led the Lady Tigers to the program’s first tournament title when they won the UAB Lady Blazer Invitational in the fall of 1988. Two of Andrews’ golfers — Leslie Folsom in 1989 and Gia Kronske in 1990 and 1991 — earned All-Metro Conference honors.

2012-13: Season in REview The 2012-13 Lady Tigers captured one team title and posted five top-10 finishes, including two in the top-five. In the fall, Memphis finished 10th at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational. The team capped off a strong fall with top-10 performances at both the FedEx Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate (3rd) and Rainbow Wahine Invitational (6th). Memphis won the rain-shortened Lady Eagle Invitational in March and capped off the season with a sixth-place showing at the C-USA Championships. Senior Alex Aläng led the Lady Tigers with three top-10 finishes and five top30 performances. In addition, Aläng captured her first career individual title at the Lady Eagle Invitational. Four Lady Tigers — Aläng, Julia Hodgson, Sarah Mathews, Ashleigh Whisenant — finished 2013-13 with a stroke average under 80.

The Lady Tigers also excelled academically. Five golfers — Aläng, Hodgson, Mathews, Natalie Turk and Whisenant — all were named WGCA All-American Scholars. Aläng, Hodgson and Mathews also were Conference USA AllAcademic Team selections. Memphis was the only program with multiple members on the league’s academic team.

Kentucky Lady Kat Intercollegiate and Metro Conference Championships.

• In the second season, Parkes awarded three scholarships, and that number increased to 10 scholarship players in 1979-80. The first scholarship Lady Tigers were Monice Madden, Jackie Worley and Elaine Heroux, a junior college transfer.

• In 1987-88, Christi Parkes, sister of Lynn Parkes, joined forces with Cowman, Lee and Kronske to post impressive scores. Parkes had a 75 at the Metro Conference Championships. Cowman had a 76 at the Southern Intercollegiate, while Kronske finished 16th at the Hudson Invitational with a low round of 75. Lee was fourth at the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate, and Barker finished tied for seventh at the Metro Conference Championships with a three-round total of 235.

• In 1979-80, Maureen Danehy and Susan Hundley became Lady Tigers. Hundley won the Indiana Long Driving Competition prior to signing with the Memphis.

• The Lady Tigers placed second at the UAB Lady Blazer Tournament in 198990, with Cowman, Kronske and Lee

• The 1994-95 Lady Tigers again swept through the Great Midwest Conference (GMC) Championships, winning the title by 47 strokes. The GMC Championships were held at Farmington Country Club in Memphis. Junior Melissa Isham claimed GMC Championships medalist honors, and teammates Marie-Louise Hviid and Bell tied for second. Isham, Hviid, Bell and Cristi Fernandez all earned All-GMC Team honors, and Hviid was also named GMC Newcomer of the Year. Coach Brock was honored as

• The 1996-97 campaign was the best to date in the program’s history. Led by newcomer Amanda Moltke-Leth, the Lady Tigers won two fall tournaments — Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate and Lady Panther Invitational — and then wrapped up the 1997 spring with the Conference USA Championships title. Moltke-Leth took medalist honors at three tournaments (Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate, Lady Panther Golf Classic, Duke Spring Invitational) and was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Coach King received C-USA Coach of the Year accolades and all five Tigers — Kim Hunt, Moltke-Leth, Ghilain, Meredith Thomas and Valerie Luehrs — were named All-Conference USA. The Lady Tigers earned an NCAA

History

• By 1982-83, Kathy Vendetti was added to the already-strong Lady Tigers lineup. She immediately made a name for herself and, before she graduated, set virtually every school record. The Lady Tigers placed in the top-10 in all four spring tournaments in 1983, including its best spring finish of fifth at the Troy State Tournament. Vendetti had a 78.8 stroke average and posted a low round of 74 at the Carrier/Memphis State Women’s Tournament. Of Vendetti’s 26 rounds that year, 16 were in the 70s.

• In 1993-94, the Lady Tigers grabbed the spotlight with their outstanding play. Memphis captured its first Great Midwest Conference (GMC) Championships crown, with Allison Bell and Kim Hunt finishing first and second, respectively, at the event. Coach Brock was named GMC Coach of the Year. Alissa Lauder, the NTU/SMU Invitational Tournament medalist, qualified for the NCAA Golf Championships, where she placed 27th in a field of 102 golfers.

• The Lady Tigers, under the direction of Coach King, continued their stellar play in the fall of 1995, capturing their second tournament title at rain-shortened Lady Panther Invitational. Isham fired a 69 to earn Lady Panther Invitational medalist honors. In addition to the two titles, Memphis recorded three top-five finishes at the Lady Kat Invitational (3rd), Lady Tar Heel Invitational (5th) and Conference USA Championships (2nd). The 1995-96 Lady Tigers earned the program’s first NCAA Regional spot. Freshman Naima Ghilain was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year.

1980-89

• Brooks was named the team’s Most Improved Player in 1988-89. Cowman continued her solid play, firing a 74 at UAB’s Lady Blazer Tournament in the fall of 1988. The squad won the Lady Blazer Tournament, the team’s first NCAA-sanctioned tournament title. Kronske placed seventh at the Metro Conference Championships and sixth at the Tiger-Tide Invitational. She received All-Metro Conference honors and finished the season with a 79.4 stroke average. Lee had rounds of 73-74 at the True Temper/Memphis Women’s Open and led the team with a season-best 78.7 stroke average.

• Lori Brock came on board as the program’s head coach in 1991-92, and under her tutelage, the Lady Tigers captured the program’s second official tournament championship, winning the Nebraska Women’s Intercollegiate. Memphis added three other top-five finishes at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational (2nd), Tiger-Tide Invitational (4th) and South Alabama Intercollegiate (4th).

Players

• The 1978-79 team participated in eight events and placed in the top-10 in four tournaments. Mary Ann Bailey had a season-low round of 78, and she also qualified for the USGA Women’s Amateur. Karen Young was signed in 197879 and became an impact player. The squad captured its first team championship in the Tennessee College Women’s State Finals Tournament (TCWSF) in 1979.

1990-99

• Coach Brock left Memphis in the summer of 1995, and Debby King was hired as the program’s new head coach. In the fall of 1995, King guided Memphis to a team title in the first tournament of her tenure at the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate.

Coaching Staff

• In 1986-87, Andrews took over as the program’s head coach when Parkes was elevated to Assistant Athletics Director for Women’s Sports. Andrews inherited a team that included Angie Barker, Cynthia Brooks and Folsom. The program added its first international players in Chilean Beatriz Cowman and Canadian Heather Lee. Andrews also inked Gia Kronske from Clearwater, Fla.

the GMC Coach of the Year for a second-straight year.

Media

• The University of Memphis women’s golf program began in 1977 under current Associate Athletics Director Lynn Parkes. With a handful of tryouts, Parkes started a program that today is one of the most-respected in the country. Members of that first Lady Tigers team were Theresa Simi, Gloria Carkeet, Cindy Gabel, Kathy Whitetree, C.C. Chamberlain and Sydney Forrester.

leading the squad. Cowman had a 74.2 stroke average in the fall and placed fifth at the Kentucky Lady Kat Invitational. Both Kronske and Lee had season stroke averages in the 70s.

• Sally Andrews, a well-known local golfer, joined Memphis as an assistant coach in 1983-84 and helped Coach Lynn Parkes mold an even stronger team. Vendetti led the Lady Tigers, placing third at the Alabama Intercollegiate. Renee Schafer joined Vendetti, and together, they fired more rounds in the 70s. Vendetti had a season-low round of 72 at the Furman Intercollegiate and carded 75s at the Lady Seminole and Carrier/Memphis State Women’s Open. Schafer also shot a 75 at the Memphis Open. • Beth Walthal and Leslie Folsom were the leaders for the 1985-86 Lady Tigers. The Folsom-Walthal tandem led the squad to fifth-place finishes at the

East Regional berth and placed eighth at the event. • The 1997-98 Lady Tigers squad continued to make its mark on the national scene, earning the program’s third-consecutive NCAA Regional berth. The Lady Tigers posted seven top-10 finishes and placed 10th at the NCAA East Regional in Durham, N.C. Moltke-Leth and Ghilain both were named All-Conference USA. • In the 1998-99 campaign, the Lady Tigers made it four-in-a-row when the team received another NCAA Regional bid. The Lady Tigers travelled to Columbia, S.C., for NCAA Regional play, and Natalie Tucker led the Memphis NCAA Regional charge with a seventh-place showing. On the year, Tucker had seven top-10 finishes, including first at the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate and third at the Conference USA Championships. Ghilain, who completed her career with a fifth-place finish at the C-USA Championships, earned All-CUSA honors for a fourth-consecutive year. • The 1999-2000 Lady Tigers spent the fall introducing a number of young players to the collegiate game. Senior Valerie Luehrs led the squad with a second-place finish at the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate. A Hawaiian trip to play in the Rainbow Wahine Fall Golf Classic was the highlight of the year. The team travelled to the islands and spent an enjoyable week playing in the prestigious college event. It was the program’s first competition outside the continental United States.

2000-09 • The 2000-01 Lady Tigers enjoyed another outstanding season. Despite playing with a young and inexperienced roster, the Lady Tigers won the Conference USA Championships title and earned their NCAA Regional fifth berth in last six seasons. Freshman Meaghan Francella, the C-USA Championships medalist, earned three league honors — C-USA Freshman of the Year, All-Conference USA and C-USA All-Tournament Team. Marianne Ruud was named All-Conference USA and to the C-USA All-Tournament Team, and Jennifer Jaszek garnered C-USA All-Tournament Team accolades. • Prior to the 2001-02 season, Coach Debby King left Memphis to start Notre Dame’s women’s golf program. Katie Rump, an outstanding collegiate and amateur player from the Memphis area, was named the Lady Tigers’ interim head coach. In Rump’s first tournament as head coach, the Lady Tigers captured the Memphis Women’s Invitational crown. The Lady Tigers also won the Edwin Watts/Carolinas Classic, where Ruud garnered medalist honors for her first collegiate tournament

title. Memphis received its sixth NCAA postseason invitation in the last seven years, participating in the East Regional in Baton Rouge, La. Francella received an individual invitation to the NCAA Championships. • The 2002-03 season was another one of change for the Memphis program. Sheryl Maize, head coach at Augsburg College in Minnesota and a noted teacher of the game, was hired as head coach to replace Rump, who served as interim coach the previous year. Maize won her first tournament as the Lady Tigers head coach, leading her squad to the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate title. Maize guided the team to two other top-five showings in the fall at the Louisville Lady Cardinal Cup (3rd) and Beacon Woods Invitational (4th). • Due to circumstances beyond their control, the Lady Tigers and their head coach faced another change in 200304. Maize was granted a year’s leave of absence to take care of family matters and returned to the state of Florida. Former NCAA official and South Carolina Lady Gamecocks coach Donna Noonan took over the Lady Tigers program on an interim basis. • For the fourth-straight year, the Lady Tigers brought in a new coach in the summer of 2004. Jenny Bruun replaced Noonan for the 2004-05 season. Bruun came to Memphis after two years as an assistant coach for both the Campbell University’s men’s and women’s golf programs. A first-year head coach, Bruun inherited a young team with one junior, six sophomores and one freshman. • Sophomore Stacey Tate led the Lady Tigers in 2004-05 with the program’s first individual title since 2002. Tate earned medalist honors at the Lady Eagle Classic. • Tate’s three first-place finishes were only some of the 2005-06 campaign highlights. Tate set school records for 18, 36 and 54 holes, as well as posting a 74.1 stroke average, besting the previous school mark by 1.7 strokes. As a team, the Lady Tigers roared to victory at the Lady Eagle Invitational, their first tournament victory since the 2002 Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate. • Memphis started off the 2006-07 season strong. After a sixth-place showing at the Badger Women’s Golf Invitational, the Lady Tigers finished no lower than fifth in their remaining fall tournaments. A win at the Wildcat Fall Invitational followed by back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Lady Paladin and Lady Jaguar invitationals gave Memphis three-consecutive top-three finishes. The Lady Tigers climbed as high as No. 38 in the Golfstat fall national polls, and Tate was named one of GolfWorld Magazine’s Top-50 Female Players to Watch. The Lady Tigers capped off a successful spring with a Conference

USA Championships title and an NCAA West Regional berth. Tate finished second at the C-USA Championships and was named to the All-C-USA first team. Junior Dawn-Marie Conaty and Rachel Larson both were All-Conference USA third team picks. • After consecutive 11th-place finishes to begin the 2007-08 campaign, the Lady Tigers placed fifth at the Johnie Imes Invitational, led by freshman Alexa Porter’s eighth-place individual finish. Larson finished 12th at the Pat Bradley Championship, and Porter was 15th. Larson earned her second-consecutive All-Conference USA third team honor, and Porter was named to the C-USA All-Tournament Team after tying for second at the C-USA Championships. • Under first-year head coach Beth Harrelson, the Lady Tigers entered the 2008-09 campaign with three newcomers and only five players on the roster. The young group improved throughout the fall campaign, closing with consecutive top-10 finishes at the Lady Red Wolf Classic and Ross Resort Invitational. Larson and freshman Marissa Steen both notched two top-20 finishes in those events, including Steen’s fourthplace showing at the Lady Red Wolf Classic. In the spring, the team competed in four events and posted two top10 finishes, including an eighth-place performance at the Conference USA Championships. • After struggling to a 14th-place finish at the 2009-10 season-opening Lady Paladin Invitational, the Lady Tigers rebounded with four-consecutive top-10 finishes to close the fall. Led by Leslie Grabeman’s performance, Memphis finished third at the Lady Red Wolf Classic. The following week, the Lady Tigers posted their second-consecutive, thirdplace finish at the Charleston Southern Invitational. In the season’s final event, Sarah Mathews posted rounds of 7473 to tie for second and lead Memphis to the UAB Fall Beach Blast title. The tournament victory was the first under Coach Harrelson and the first for the program since the 2007 Conference USA Championships crown.

2010-PRESENT emphis struggled to a 15th-place finM ish at the Hurricane Invitational, but bounced back in the next tournament, taking the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational title. Steen carded scores of 75-73-74 to earn medalist honors and lead the Lady Tigers to their second victory of the season. Memphis finished sixth at the Cincinnati Spring Invitational and just narrowly missed claiming its third title at the Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonel Classic, finishing second at the event. Aläng led Memphis with a thirdplace individual finish at the Eastern Kentucky Lady Colonel Classic. At the C-USA Championships, the Lady Tigers posted a

total of 895, the squad’s season best and the program’s all-time third-best score. • The 2010-11 campaign was a successful one for the Lady Tigers. For the first time since the 1996-97 season, the Lady Tigers won three events (Bobcat Invitational, UAB Fall Beach Blast, Lady Eagle Invitational). Steen claimed medalist honors in all three events and set a single-season scoring record with a 73.97 stroke average. Steen, a three-time C-USA Golfer of the Week recipient, also was named to the C-USA All-Tournament Team after finishing second at the C-USA Championships. She was also named All-Conference USA first team. The Lady Tigers wrapped up the season with a fourth-place team finish at the C-USA Championships with a 54-hole team score of 911. • In 2011-12, the Lady Tigers took home four top-five finishes and two tournament victories. At the end of October, the Lady Tigers captured the season’s first tournament win at the Memphis Women’s Fall Invitational, before taking their third-straight UAB Fall Beach Blast title. Steen and Kathleen Glavin each picked up first-place finishes and C-USA Golfer of the Week honors in their final season. Steen won both the Chris Banister Fall Classic and Memphis Women’s Fall Invitational, and Glavin was victorious at the UAB Fall Beach Blast. Steen was named to the All-Conference USA first team. At the C-USA Championships, the Lady Tigers tied for fourth place with a score of 929. • The 2012-13 Lady Tigers captured one team tournament title and posted five top-10 finishes, including two top-five performances. The team opened the season with a 10th-place finish at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational. The Lady Tigers posted their first top-five performance in October, finishing third at the FedEx Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate. The squad followed that third-place finish with a sixth-place showing at the University of Hawaii’s Rainbow Wahine Invitational, the squad’s final fall tournament. The Lady Tigers opened their spring slate in fine fashion, finishing a co-champion of the rain-shortened Lady Eagle Invitational (one round). In addition, Alex Aläng claimed the Lady Eagle Invitational individual title for her first career victory. Memphis wrapped up its season with a strong sixth-place finish at the Conference USA Championships in April. Lady Tigers golfers posted 16 top-30 individual finishes, led by Aläng and Julia Hodgson with five apiece. Aläng also led the squad with three top-10 finishes.
