SMArchS Thesis MIT
Ismailia, Egypt This thesis proposes an alternative plan that creates a legible structure and a recognizable identity within one neighborhood at the heart of the Sheikh Zayed district lying in post-war Ismailia. Using an urban infill strategy, this proposed plan is based on the premise that compact cities are more sustainable because dense areas share the same infrastructure and public services, are more walkable and bikable, and therefore they save energy and reduce pollution. In order to reach an optimal design, a thorough historical and urban study was also undertaken.

This youth center, juxtaposed by Islamic Cairo, is a reflection of the esoteric quality and the sense of discovery living within this historic neighborhood. The whole project is buried underground with immersed colorful lanterns or jewels, which not only enlighten the place, but also echo the old city’s hidden treasures. Each lantern color represents certain Sufi myths.

Abu Dhabi, UAE Since it’s a mixed use governmental project, the Urban Planning Council of Abu Dhabi required the consultant to present a full risk assessment evaluation and report for the project. In addition, the project had to fulfill the requirements of a 2 Pearl Certified Building (equivalent to the LEED Gold Certification). Thus, an environmental report was produced including different sustainable strategies implemented within the project.
