An excerpt from Shawn Wheatley’s Closing School Ceremony speech: When you stop to think about why we are all here today, it is 100% because of Cheryl Lowe. Many years ago, Mrs. Lowe stood up and she walked to the microphone. I am sure she was filled with nerves and self-doubt, but she collected her thoughts, and she took a deep breath. In spite of all the naysayers, undeterred by those who said she could not do it, Mrs. Lowe did not just give a speech. She laid out a vision for a school and and then she created that school. I doubt many people understand the courage it must have taken to stand up and say, “I want a classical, Christian school where Latin will be the foundation of our curriculum. Students will take Latin every year; they will learn and eventually master all Latin grammar before they enter high school. They will then,” in Mrs. Lowe’s words, “have the privilege to translate the great Latin authors and poets while in high school.” I was not there to hear that first speech, but I was around to hear more than a few people say, “That woman is crazy. That will never work.” Mrs. Lowe was not an immediate success. I am sure behind closed doors or perhaps even to her face, she was patronized and lectured to about how a school should really be run. I never saw her get mad or argue. But she never quit. She did not falter. She would not back down. She kept walking to the microphone, she took a deep breath, and she presented her vision, over and over again. She was relentless. Crescent Hill Campus 2800 Frankfort Avenue
