Dear HLS Families, Every HLS school year begins with the Opening School Ceremony. Students, teachers, and parents attend this formal ceremony to signify the importance of our partnership and mission. The start of a school year is special and the ceremony denotes the importance. Because great care and attention are given to this event, it is often favorably commented on by the HLS community.

However, behind the scenes we have never gotten this ceremony correct. Despite our administrative efforts to coordinate everything to perfection, it has never once been perfect. Far from it, actually! Year after year, mistakes are made which only those closely associated with the ceremony would recognize. Every year something goes wrong, yet every year people comment on how much they enjoyed it.

Before this year, Mrs. Lowe was always the first person to give “the look� when something went wrong. Whether we were in the sanctuary at Crescent Hill or on the lawn at Spring Meadows, she would always be the first to catch it. Usually it was something very subtle, and on a few occasions it was quite noticeable, but Mrs. Lowe would always bring it to my attention.

Her point was never to make someone feel bad or unappreciated, but to remind us that we can always be better. The Opening School Ceremony, despite the glowing reviews from parents, can always be better. Highlands Latin School can always be better. We strive to push our students to be the best friends and scholars they can be, always knowing that there will be mistakes, but never fearful of trying to be better.

Mrs. Lowe would laugh a lot about the mistakes and errors we made because she knew we could grow from them. She had a great sense of humor when it came to mistakes, and saw them as an opportunity to do better next time. She also realized that if you require a perfect event, you may just settle for a “great” event! She knew that while there is no such thing as perfection on Earth, there is nothing wrong with aiming for the stars!

We must continue to strive for perfection, knowing that mistakes are inevitable.

We must aim for the highest peak because falling short of a noble goal is better than settling for a mediocre one. I am thankful for all the people who love the HLS Opening School Ceremony … mistakes and all!

Focus on Faculty:

Sean Brooks .“Good morning, Mr. Brooks,” respond nearly 130 Spring Meadows Upper School students, in unison, after Sean Brooks, Upper School teacher and Director of the House System, calls their attention with the same greeting. It’s Tuesday morning, and Mr. Brooks is standing on a chair in Cooke Hall at 7:50 a.m. He makes a few announcements about the week—the upcoming hayride, House service projects— and then transitions into this week’s Morning Formation talk. Today’s topic: Trusting God. “When I started in the Upper School, each morning assembly included announcements and usually a brief word of encouragement. The talks at that point had no theme,” says Mr. Brooks, who, inspired by his predecessor Cody King, began organizing weekly Morning Formation talks around virtues.

Mr. Brooks and other Upper School teachers and administrators rotate talking throughout the year. Each trimester focuses on one of the three Transcendentals—the Good, the True, and the Beautiful—and each week focuses on a different idea, character, or story.

“Ultimately, the goal of a Classical Christian school is to promote character and virtue, to help these students be formed into the image of Christ and attain the knowledge and wisdom that is required to serve the world well. Certainly the teachers take pains to do this in their individual classes, but we also want to focus our attention on that task together as the Upper School. So, we draw our students’ attention to what is Good, True, and Beautiful each morning in order that over time it infiltrates their thoughts and desires.”

Before Mr. Brooks was tasked with student formation, he began his career at HLS in 2007 teaching First Form Latin. Though Mr. Brooks initially interviewed to teach 5th grade, the need for a Lower School Latin teacher was more imminent.

“I happened to have had Latin in high school and studied languages in college, so I felt somewhat credentialed,” says Mr. Brooks, “until I gave my ‘addition’ lesson in front of Mrs. Lowe. I fumbled through the lesson, repeatedly correcting myself as recollection began to take hold, but she took pity on me and decided that I would do well as a Latin teacher. The confidence demonstrated in me by Mrs. Lowe and Mr. Wheatley that year never felt deserved, but always drove me to try to justify it.”

In the three years following, Mr. Brooks taught 6th grade boys. Then he transitioned to the Upper School, where he taught Classical Christian Studies and Latin—two subjects he still teaches now, in his 10th year at HLS. In the fall of 2015, Mr. Brooks added the position of Director of the House System to his role.

“Teaching helps me stay connected to the needs and experience of the students so that I can better implement my role as Director. Being the Director of the House System helps me better see how everything that we as teachers do fits together into the whole of the formation we are trying to achieve,” says Mr. Brooks.

The House System is annually celebrated at the Upper School “Advance” on the second Saturday of the academic year, when 7th grade (and new Upper School) students are assigned to one of four Houses. The intentional

division of the Houses, he says, promotes the type of social interaction in which students step out of their comfort zone and create a familial

connection. Once new members are assigned to their House, the day is packed with encouraging talks, athletic competitions, and House skits.

“There are so many aspects of the retreat I love,” says Mr. Brooks. “Of the scheduled events, my favorite would have to be the Head of House installations. That event represents so much of what we are trying to accomplish in terms of encouraging character and raising up leaders who challenge other students to do likewise. That’s a special moment.”

Prior to his role in the House System, Mr. Brooks’s extracurricular involvement at HLS included a brief stint as a basketball coach during which he says his greatest accomplishment was “not irreparably damaging the players so they could still be of use to the program in their later years.” He also attempted to start a ping-pong club (to no avail) and would eventually like to start a triathlon club. Mr. Brooks is also an original member of Lowe Expectations, a faculty band which has played at numerous HLS dances and concerts “due to popular demand, namely that of the Director of the House System,” he adds.

In each role, Mr. Brooks’s goal is to have a positive and encouraging exchange with at least one student each day.

"By the end of each week I want to have faithfully represented what is Good, True, and Beautiful and challenged my students to not only understand the subject matter I have taught, but also see how that fits with becoming the person God has created them to be. By the end of the year I want to have positively influenced students to be more like Christ and helped facilitate a sense of community that makes the students look forward to the next school year.”

Mr. Brooks, a graduate of Missouri Baptist University, studied Christian Psychology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and recently completed a master’s program in Marriage and Family Therapy at Campbellsville University. He is married to Lindsey, and together they are proud parents of Gus (age 3) and Saul Anthem, born September 7. The Brooks family attends Sojourn Community Church.

MP CONFERENCE HOSTS N E A R LY 400 T E A C H E R S During July 10-14, the 9th annual Memoria Press Conference was hosted at Highlands Latin School’s Spring Meadows campus; 120 homeschool teachers and more than 250 school teachers were in attendance.

Tanya Charlton, Curriculum Director at Memoria Press, says the goal is to train teachers on how to use the MP curriculum, including newly hired HLS teachers.

“This conference is to further instill the philosophy of classical education through our plenaries and to train teachers to implement our specific curriculum so that they are successful," says Tanya. "We use our HLS teachers as presenters since they are the experts in implementation of the curriculum."

The Memoria Press team has worked hard to improve the event year to year, hiring more staff and even a small group of HLS alumni (and one current student) as summer interns.

Planning begins a full year in advance. The biggest challenge is potentially outgrowing use of the HLS Spring Meadows campus as more schools adopt the curriculum and the event grows. Tanya says it was really important to Cheryl Lowe that the teachers get to sit in HLS classrooms, so she and the conference planners intend to make that happen for as long as possible.

“Our goal is to send educators (homeschool and classroom) away with a clear understanding of what a classical education is and how to implement it. So we are presenting the big picture of classical education, but we differ from other classical education conferences by adding practical help. We put our attendees into classrooms with our HLS teachers, who model how to teach lessons in every subject, as well as throwing in tips for classroom management, discipline, and classroom appearance. We also offer specific help for school administrators. So we talk about classical education in theory, but then we actually prepare teachers to teach day to day."

The 2018 MP Conference will be held July 6-7 for homeschoolers, July 8 for pre-conference workshops on specific subjects, and July 9-10 for classroom teachers and school administrators.

Why do we study Latin?

As you know, at HLS students begin Latin in second grade and continue through Latin grammar and translation until twelfth grade. Why is there such an emphasis on Latin?

Simply put, the essential core of a classical curriculum is Latin and the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. Add classical literature, prioritize the languages of math and music and learn Greek if you are lucky. But Latin, Greece, and Rome are non-negotiables.

Why Latin? There is no other subject that trains the mind and integrates the skills necessary to learn any subject like Latin. It offers a structure and system to the language arts in the way math offers structure and a system to the sciences. It is orderly, cumulative, and systematic in a way that English is not. Latin, after all, was the language of the regimented, politically and militarily superior Romans.

Latin allows students to understand their own language better because it offers comparison and objectivity. Furthermore, it is the mother language of English thus providing over half of our vocabulary—and not only half, but the advanced half.

Need more? Latin is the language of all the sciences. It is also finite and cumulative and because of this affords an opportunity for mastery. It demands careful, detailed thinking which translates to all learning. And it is ubiquitous in the body of knowledge common to all educated persons throughout history. Its educational value cannot be overstated. That is why it is at the core of our curriculum. –Leigh Lowe

Science Olympiad 6th-12th grade students will participate in upcoming Science Olympiad Division Invitationals in Bardstown and Louisville.

Though not in uniform or sitting in classrooms, HLS students are still at work on Mondays preparing for two Science Olympiad Invitationals: Division B (6th-8th grades) on December 16 in Bardstown, and Division C (9th-12th grades) at Kentucky Country Day on January 13. A standard and competitive team exists for each of 23 events in which the Highlanders will compete. Competitive students commit to at least three events. Currently, 26 students are signed up to compete, although interested students can still sign up by contacting Jason Borah, who is organizing the event. Each team is coached by a HLS faculty member or administrator.

“We want Science Olympiad to be a fun, challenging competition for HLS students to stretch their scientific muscles. We are working hard to become a strong competitor at the Kentucky State Science Olympiad tournament,” says Mr. Borah.

Jackson Hoffman (11th) will compete in Anatomy and Microbes, and Haylee Hatcher (11th) will compete in Forensics and Disease Detectives. They will compete as a team in the Chemistry Lab competition.

“We’re in A.P. Chemistry now, so that helps," says Jackson.

The two say they hope to place top five. “Maybe third place,” adds Haylee, before retracting her statement, “Actually, first!”

The Science Olympiad Regional Tournament will be held in March, and those who advance to State will compete in April.

Work, Study: HLS Students E

SAM BUSH 12th grade HLS, Groundskeeper "I weed and mow first, and make sure the front of the gym and the islands are kept clean and free of weeds. Then, I do whatever else needs to be done," says Sam, who reports to two full-time Groundskeepers at HLS. Sam, who worked 34 hours per week in the summer and now works 8 hours each Monday, says the labor has been harder than he expected, especially on the summer days when the heat index reached upwards of 105 degrees. Sam says balancing his homework with a part-time job hasn’t made him feel overloaded; he finishes school work on Saturdays and Sundays.

SAMUEL HADDOW 9th grade Louisville Zoo, Volunteer

Samuel has been interested in animals since he was young, but didn’t know much about butterflies until he

was assigned to work the Louisville Zoo Butterfly Exhibit.

"I learned about butterflies in general, but I learned a lot about the plants," says Samuel, who says most of the questions from patrons were about what types of plants attract the butterflies. (The answer is milkweed.) Samuel worked 5 hours each week during the summer.

EMILY STEINBACH 9th grade Second Presbyterian Church, Pianist for Children’s Choirs Each Wednesday night, Emily accompanies three children’s choirs during their practices at Second Presbyterian Church. This is Emily’s 5th year in this job; she began when she was nine.

"They sing cute, little songs like ‘This Little Light of Mine'," she says, after noting that she has to learn the songs on her own prior to the choir practice each week. "It’s given me a lot of experience with children and also accompanying." The choirs include children in grades Junior Kindergarten through 6th.

Chapman coaches each Saturday morning, from 8:00-10:15; this is his second season.

Chapman says he’s been impressed with how smart the players are at such a young age. "They know how to follow directions. They usually don’t, but they know how."

"I’ve learned how

to get to know people," he says. At Owl Creek, he busses tables in the clubhouse while also talking to guests. Frankie says the patrons of both clubs are nice, and he enjoys meeting so many new people. He works 8 hours/week in the school year and 29 hours/week during the summer. Starting in September, he only works on the weekends and in the afternoon so has no trouble finishing his homework.

JOSIAH GOMEZ 10th grade Pruitt’s Automotive, Customer Service Josiah says his 8-hour work week during the school year gives him plenty of time to do his homework and stay committed to gymnastics and other extracurriculars. Working in customer service at the full-service gas station, his main responsibilities include keeping an eye on the lot as cars pull in, serving customers, and answering their questions. "I meet a wide variety of people," he says. "The best part is meeting someone super cool, who tells you super-cool stories!" Josiah works on Monday and Saturday mornings during the school year, and 24 hours per week in the summer.

FAITH THIBAUDEAU 11th grade Chick-fil-A, Front Line Team Member Faith works 1012 hours each week taking and bagging orders, and making beverages. "I have learned patience,

multi-tasking, and confidence," she says. Faith most enjoys working the drive-thru, and says she’s made many friends at work. "My boyfriend also works there, so that’s a plus!" Faith says working only two days a week helps her manage her homework efficiently; because Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays, she always has a full day off each weekend.

AIDEN ARNOLD 12th grade St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Keyboardist Each week, Aiden plays the keyboard with the praise band at St. Luke’s. His position in band is paid; he spends 5 hours

each week committed to this job (around 4 hours in practice, and 1 hour performing.) "It’s very fulfilling to have a job that you enjoy," says Aiden, who says the band members are fun and welcoming. "I get to do what I love: play piano." Aiden says the role doesn’t take up too much of his time; he’s learned to balance the gig with his school work.

Behind the Sign: Daniel Young Daniel Young (9th) says his original illustration for the ad promoting the HLS Drama Club's performance of The Curious Savage “gave too much away,” according to Director Teresa Boling. So, the two went back and forth with ideas until settling on the final image—a watercolor of HLS student India Rose Cary, who will play Mrs. Ethel P. Savage, holding a teddy bear.

“I really like bright colors and watercolor, but this was only my third or fourth one,” says Daniel. “I was afraid I was going to make her face green.

And I did. But I was able to wash it off.”

Daniel, who has been taking art classes at Louisville Visual Art since 4th grade, says he read the full script before drawing the graphic. He spent almost four hours on it, after taking pictures of India. Now, he’s helping with set design.

“We’re painting palettes and furniture now,” says Daniel, who stays after school each Thursday with other set design members to work under the guidance of Dr. Charlie Suer, Mrs. Starr Steinbach, and Mrs. Boling.

Daniel says students interested in pursuing art should "test the waters" by deciding which media they prefer, taking classes, and buying specific supplies. When asked if he considered being an actor in the play instead, he said, “Maybe, eventually. But for now just set.”

The Curious Savage will be presented by Highlands Latin School Drama Troupe on November 10-11 at Crescent Hill Baptist Church.

H L S S T U D E N T S E A R N N AT I O N A L M E R I T R E C O G N I T I O N Four HLS seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their scores on the 2016 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Matthew Rouse was named National Merit Semifinalist. Katelyn Miller, Helen Mariah Murdoch, and Maggie Roy were named Commended Students.

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.

Alumni Spotlight:

Tulia Wolfe HLS Class of 2014

Tulia Wolfe spent 5th-12th grade at HLS before attending Boyce College (the undergraduate institution of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) to study teacher education. Tulia, who will graduate from Boyce in May, is simultaneously earning a master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology at the University of Louisville. She says her time at HLS taught her to “study hard and study well.”

What are your fondest memories of HLS? HLS knows how to have fun and make memories in a way that no other school could, all the while providing a wholesome environment. Some of my favorite memories throughout the years were the fifth grade Robin Hood play, all the retreats (especially the one where Mr. Wheatley got us “lost” on a mountain), and the candlelight Christmas Cantata.

When did you decide to pursue education?

Because HLS gave me such a well-rounded education, I have high expectations for classes and students. By going to HLS, I got to see what good teachers look like, and I aspire to be like them in my classroom.

Your coursework required a “shadow experience,” which you completed at HLS. Describe that experience.

After having taught in various schools over the past three years, coming to HLS to observe for a semester was a breath of fresh air. The curriculum is simply that much better. The students are motivated to learn by eager teachers. I now see how good it is to learn Latin, even if the rest of the world sees it as “dead."

It helps students learn English derivatives later on and stretches their brains through repetition and memorization.

What is your advice for current HLS students?

Coming from someone who didn’t realize how amazingly different HLS is from most other schools when I was a student, my advice would be to cherish your time at HLS. When you get to college, your professors will most likely not be as eager to impart their knowledge to you. So soak it up, friends! Enjoy the long nights parsing Latin paragraphs or studying the Iliad, because you are learning things that most of your other peers do not have access to learn.

What do you value about your classical education today?

One thing that I did not recognize as valuable until recently was how HLS stresses memorization. I have seen the value of Latin in my time at UofL. All of the medical terms seemed daunting at first, but when I took the time to break down the words, often familiar Latin words were the root.

What’s next?

I think that actually I am going to finish school even earlier than I had originally anticipated, which means that I get to start in my career field earlier. This is my last semester of undergrad, then I will student teach in the spring. After that, I will get my master's; then I would love to spend time both teaching in an elementary school and being a pediatric speech pathologist.

"To win, of course," says India regarding the House of Andrew goals this year. "As well as cultivate next year's leaders."

The House of Andrew will serve Uspiritus this year; their first project is Nov. 4. "The goal for the House of St. Andrew is to lead through examples. My goal is to demonstrate kindness and joy in everything I do," she says.

Katelyn says the best part about the Upper School Retreat was the House Leader speeches.

Her goals for the House of David are to strengthen friendships, and hopefully win! "I want to lead my House by being an example of love and hard work to other members of my House," she says.

The House of David began serving the Louisville Rescue Mission with their first event on Sept. 25.

“House, House of, House of St. George!" The House Chant for George rang out at the 2017 Upper School Retreat. According to Frankie, House goals this year include getting to know the Lower School better. "I will lead our House by having our House serve the community and help everyone get to know each other." House of George will serve Louisville Family Shelter, starting Nov. 4.

Drew Watson says the best part about the Upper School Retreat was inducting new members and the athletics. “Honestly, just the entire day was awesome,” he says. Drew hopes to lead his House this year "with joy and vigor" and says the House goals are to have fun, enjoy the events, and become a tightknit group.

The House of Patrick kicked off their service hours at Franciscan Soup Kitchen on Sept. 25.

Rebecca Shelburne (Upper School Biology, Anatomy & Physiology) was married June 24 to Ray Schnur. The wedding and reception were held at Corbett's Restaurant.

STUDENTS At the 2017 Kentucky State Fair, Michael Lassell (11th) won second place for Best Pastel Eggs; Lydia Baum (7th) received a third -place ribbon for her polymer clay display of Beauty and the Beast; Katherine Baum (5th) received a participation ribbon for her polymer clay scene of the Louisville Zoo; Connor Gilcreast (4th) won first place in junior vegetables for his carrots; Emma Gilcreast (6th) won second place in cake decorating.

Emily Steinbach (9th) attended the Indiana University Summer Piano Academy, a selective, 3-week piano intensive program where students from around the world come together to enrich their piano skills. These students (rising 7th though 12th graders) stay on campus at IU and are taught by outstanding piano professors from IU and other top universities.

Distinguished artist teachers come to the Academy to teach master classes, to perform, and hold lecture recitals. It was an amazing experience for Emily, and she came back an exceedingly better piano student. At the end of the three weeks, they held an honors and awards program where Emily received the high honor of Most Improved Piano Student.

Laura Gibson (7th) was selected for the Kentucky American Choral Directors Association honor choir, held Nov. 3-4 in Lexington.

Daniel Young (9th) won two awards at the Kentucky State Fair. His drawing (see photo below) won both second place and the Mary & John Hydro Memorial Award, and his 3D entry also won second place.

Matthew Rouse (12th), the Highlanders Pitcher, won a spot on the elite Ironmen Prime 16U travel baseball team. In July, his pitching performance at the WWBA 16U National Championship in Atlanta helped him earn a spot on the AllTournament Team for that event.

Anna Callihan (12th) was named Employee of the Summer at Soccer Village on Shelbyville Road.

HLS 5th-7th grade Gold/Blue Volleyball Teams earned second place in the KCAA Middle School Volleyball Tournament in September; they ended the season second in their league. The final match was against their biggest rival, to whom the Highlanders fell in the third set, 17-15.

"In the semifinals, we came back from a large deficit to force a third set, and we won the third set and the match. That was probably the most we've fought to win a game this season," says Coach Rachel Booker.

Coach Booker says the team learned how to utilize setters this season and use three hits to take the ball over the net. A former HLS student and avid volleyball player, Coach Booker values the community in HLS athletics, and understands the importance of teaching young players the fundamentals. “Players need a very solid foundation upon which to learn. If I can be the one to lay that foundation, then I feel confident sending my girls to play on club teams and, eventually, Varsity. Outside of volleyball, I really loved being a part of the HLS family again. I really enjoyed working with such wonderful families and players, and I look forward to next season!� www.TheLatinSchool.org
