applied studies Your musical training begins with applied study on your principle instrument or voice. All undergraduate music students enjoy four years of private lessons. You will also benefit from weekly masterclasses and frequent workshops with exciting visiting musicians.

ensembles Every year the School of Music hosts more than 100 concerts, masterclasses and public lectures by renowned artists and scholars. Students and top musicians from around the world share the spotlight as we celebrate musical excellence and diversity with newly commissioned operas, traditional Newfoundland music, electroacoustic innovation, classical chamber ensembles and many more stimulating musical events.

chamber music

The chamber music course allows students to collaborate with one another in ensemble works each semester. The course is designed to enhance leadership and performance skills while incorporating practical instruction from weekly coachings.

Students attend six masterclasses per semester and conclude with a juried performance presented by the Music@Memorial concert series.

bachelor of music (B.Mus.)

The bachelor of music degree is a four-year program.

Students receive individual instruction on their principle instrument or voice every semester. In the first two years, all music students take common courses in music theory, aural skills, and music history. At the end of their fourth semester, students may choose one of the following majors: Majors: • Composition • Comprehensive (emphasizes courses in music education) • Musicologies • Performance • Joint major in music performance and musicologies • Major in performance with minor in composition • Minor in jazz studies

bachelor of music and bachelor of business administration Students in the music and business administration joint degrees program graduate with two degrees in five years.

It is designed to give students the musicianship, knowledge, skills and business acumen they need to forge their careers in music and further afield. Students in this program have the option to concentrate their music studies in general musical studies, performance, or composition.

master of music (M.Mus.)

A master of music degree from the School of Music prepares you for the life of a professional musician in today’s world.

With emphasis on developing performance and career skills, the program has the flexibility to encompass the particular needs of each student, offering a rich variety and performance opportunities.

Concentrations: • Performance • Performance and pedagogy • Conducting (choral, instrumental, or combined) All master of music programs provide: • Performance, or conducting experience to develop skills to a professional level.

• Performance and pedagogy for voice, piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba.

• Development of music research and critical thinking skills through study of research methods exploration of music in its social context.

• Development of the career and complementary professional skills needed to thrive as a professional musician, focusing on career development, taxes, media and promotion.

• Internships and community music programs.

• The option to produce a professional-quality recording.

ethnomusicology MA/PhD

Ethnomusicology places music in its social and cultural contexts, where it works closely with other expressive forms (such as dance, theatre and storytelling) to curate public memory and mobilize community engagement and future thinking. The study of music in place and its mobility through mediation is key both to the preservation of culture and to cultural critique. In St. John’s, traditional music has been a moveable feast for nearly 400 years.

That puts us in a unique position to offer a dynamic program for students who want to study music as a cultural practice.

Our ethnomusicology graduate programs are interdisciplinary, with courses offered through both the School of Music and the Department of Folklore.

international experience All undergraduate and graduate students have the option to study abroad at our international Harlow Campus.

Participants are able to explore music in one of the most vibrant, historically significant, and diverse musical environments found anywhere in the world. They participate in field trips to concerts, operas, musical theatre and historic musical venues in and around London. Prior to taking flight, students take a music seminar course in historical and cultural context and throughout travels, an experiential course attending masterclasses, concerts and guest lectures.

about harlow campus

Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Harlow Campus is situated in the quaint, historic town of Old Harlow, Essex, U.K. Midway between London and Cambridge, it is linked to both cities by road and mainline railway (being approximately 40 minutes from each by rail). The campus consists of a group of 17th-century and modern buildings.

This electronic music research and teaching facility is bristling with innovation and creativity. Here you can use state-of-the-art technology to explore the world of digital music: composing, inventing new instruments, creating software and scoring films.

music resource centre, school of music

A quiet oasis that houses our score and media collections, with listening carrels, computers and worktables. Extensive music texts and journals are available at the nearby Queen Elizabeth II Library, one of the best university libraries in Canada.

research centre for music, media and place (MMaP) MMaP is dedicated to community-based music research and engagement, with a library/seminar room, a gallery for performance, and a rehearsal room with a sprung dance floor, multimedia production facilities and office spaces for ethnomusicology graduate students.

Ethnomusicology students working in the areas of choral music and singing can apply for research and community project grants in an annual competition.

Memorial’s School of Music has a vibrant scholarship and fellowship program for entering and continuing students.

Over a third of all undergraduates receive scholarship support, while graduate students are awarded fellowship funding. Students also benefit from Memorial University’s broad entrance scholarship program. how to apply

Students who would like to audition for the School of Music undergraduate or graduate program must apply through the Memorial University online portal and follow the application steps indicated.

auditions

Our auditions are designed to gain a full understanding of your musical background and ability. Based on your area of application and intended degree program, you are asked to prepare an appropriate audition to perform for a panel of faculty members.

In addition, you will be asked to take a theory test, aural skills test and piano proficiency evaluation.

You may choose to audition live in: • St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador • Halifax, Nova Scotia • Toronto, Ontario You may also audition by video or by video conference.

However, we strongly encourage live auditions wherever possible.
