Creating 7,500 Local Jobs Running public projects and a one-stop recruitment center

H

aeundae City will generate 7,500 jobs this year.

In the public sector, they will provide 3,845 jobs in 37 government projects, including a local job creation program, council utility worker positions, and an employment project for the elderly. 500 million won of city government budget funds has been allocated specialized crafts such as the local artisan cooperative, the theater company, and the street art company, which have been receiving favorable reviews thanks to their unique and distinctive skill-sets.

In the private sector, they will produce 1,000 jobs by attracting enterprises to the Centum Industrial Complex, and establish additional positions at the technology complex in Banyeo. They will also generate around 100 more jobs by promoting social enterprises and small local companies, and also through the operation of the Haeundae Changjo Business Center and 3D Printing Center for young business people.

best business centers in Korea by the Small and Medium Business Administration last year and received 430 million won of financial support from the government.

In addition to these efforts, the City will also provide 2,000 more employment opportunities with a onestop recruitment center, job fairs, job agencies, and will support 185 individuals employed through job training courses.

Meanwhile, the 3D Printing Center, the first project in its field in the country, had great success in that 90% of its trainees found full-time employment. As a result, the center was chosen as the recipient of a government funded job creation project for the second time and received 130 million won from the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

JOB EXPERIENCE PROGRAM FOR TEENAGERS

T

his month Haeundae-gu is launching a job experience program for teenagers. The program provides second grade middle school students an opportunity to experience the working life of government officials. Students who want to participate in the program can sign up at their school. A school is eligible for the program when they have 60 applicants. The participants are divided into two groups where they learn about the recruitment process, watch a promotional video of Haeundae, attend a lecture, and visit the CCTV Control Center and Haeundae Council. Haeundae-gu provides them with transport from their school to the office.

This program was launched to provide students with an understanding of what it like to be a govern-

ment official, and to encourage their dreams in this field in the future. Students can meet newly hired young officials who will share their experiences on the job and their future goals. There will be a Q&A time during which students can find out more information about this highly coveted position.

“We prepared this program so that second graders can spend their free semesters (an optional period of field trips and practical courses) more fruitfully. I hope this program will help students better understand the roles and responsibilities of government officials and inspire them to work with us in the future” said the Haeundae mayor.

he new address message service that Haeundae city has been providing for new residents since last March, has been receiving favorable reviews. Within an hour of registering their new details on the “moving-in report card” at the city office, citizens receive a text message with their new address. People say it is convenient because they can easily check their new address.

They also advise people on how to use a service which automatically lets their banks, insurance companies, and credit card companies know their change of address. It can be used by simply inputting basic information at www.KTmoving.com without signing up for the website. You can choose from 25 companies and organizations to notify of your new address and also set your moving date.

Reborn as a Happy Fishing Village Construction of Haesong Pedestrian Bridge, a symbolic landmark, and the village hall has been completed.

aeundae City’s launching of the ‘Making Happy Cheongsapo Project’ was attended by congressmen, the Haeundae mayor, and 200 citizens in Cheongsapo on April 23rd. Cheongsapo was selected to benefit from a re-beautification project by the National Government in 2009. 3.8 billion won of government funds were invested to build the Haesong Pedestrian Bridge, a symbolic sculpture, a village hall, and art ateliers, which have all been completed recently.

Haesong Bridge is the most dramatic example of the recent changes. The city built 7.8㎞ of wooden decking between Haeundae Beach and the entrance to Songjeong beach in 2013. However, it was somewhat inconvenient since Haesong Bridge, which is located in the center of the route, did not have pedestrian access. In response to this problem, the city built a pedestrian bridge alongside Haesong Bridge which allows people to walk all the way to the end of Dalmaji. They also made an observatory in the middle of the pedestrian bridge, where walkers can take in uninterrupted views of Cheongsapo and the East Sea. Additionally, they built a symbolic landmark at the entrance to Cheongsapo, which is signposted with a

welcoming message for tourists and a legend from local lore.

Construction of a village hall, a long-held wish of Cheongsapo locals, was also completed. The threestory building with a huge atelier space in the basement, a community hall, and a room for seniors to gather and socialize. The atelier is open to the public for traditional and modern pottery making and engraving classes.

In accordance with public opinion, the city has made the roads in the area safer by resurfacing old roads and building a median on the road between Cheongsapo and the coastal road.

The city will continue to develop more cultural events that will appeal to both citizens and tourists. “By the time we finish all the construction projects we have planned, Cheongsapo will be a very desirable place to live.” said the city mayor.

60 Countries Visit Busan Construction of Haesong Pedestrian Bridge, a symbolic landmark, and the village hall has been completed.

journalists from 60 countries including Jim Boumelha, the President of International Federation of Journalists, visited Busan from April 15th to 17th. They came to Haeundae to participate in the World Journalists Conference hosted by the Journalists' Association of Korea. They explored Busan’s tourist attractions such as Dongbaek Island, Nurimaru APEC house, Bexco, Busan Cinema Center, Busan International Finance Center, and Gamcheon Cultural Village over their three day stay. They also visited UN Memorial Cemetery with flowers to raise awareness about the importance of the peaceful reunification of the two Koreas.

The Journalists Association of Korea hosted the World Journalists Conference from April 12th to 18th. This was the 3rd conference and discussed two main topics: ‘Divided for 70 years, Thinking of Korea’s Peaceful Reunifica-

tion’ and ‘Freedom of the Press and Hardships facing Journalists’. Varied opinions about Korea’s reunification and the safety of journalists were shared.

On April 15th, participants discussed freedom of the press including Charlie Hebdo, the French magazine which was the target of terrorist attacks last January. In the afternoon they attended a banquet where they watched a Korean fan dance and a jango (traditional two-headed drum) dance by the Busan Metropolitan Dance Company, and a promotional video of Busan.

Please let the world know about Haeundae, and focus on the peaceful reunification of the Koreas.” said Haeundae mayor.

Woo-dong Stream Home to Salamanders It’s all citizens’ contribution.

W

oo dong Stream, which dissects Woo 2-dong, has became an ecological habitat and home to many salamanders.

It used to be hazardous to citizens’ health, as it was filled with flies and mosquitoes due to wastewater and bad odors from illegal buildings in the nearby alley. Some locals were calling for the stream to be paved over because the contaminated water was flowing into the Suyeong River and polluting it. However, the city decided to restore the stream to its natural state with the help of locals, and now all their hard work has paid

off. They have cleaned and fumigated the waterway and turned it into a place where fish are thriving and children want to hang out.

Delayed maintenance construction which was started in 2009 has finally been completed. Now, the stream has become so clean that even salamanders, which can only survive in pristine water, are living there. Recently, marsh snails were found in the water, too.

The formerly dark, dingy street has been converted into an artistic space with beautiful murals. Local citizens are urged to play their part in order to keep the revived stream clean and beautiful.

Crop Dusting for Prevention of Pine Wilt Disease

FROM MAY 14TH TO AUGUST 6TH, ON MT. WOONBONG AND MT. GWAKGEOL

H

aeundae-gu is carrying-out crop dusting for the prevention of pine wilt disease from May 14th to August 6th. A helicopter will be used to distribute the pesticide on selected days during the hatching period of Japanese pine sawyer beetles, the carriers of the disease. During this time, citizens are required to take special care to avoid any harm from the pesticides.

The crop dustings will take place between 5am and 11am on May 14th, June 4th, June 25th, July 16th, and August 6th, on 100ha of forest on Mt. Woonbong in Bansong and 20ha on Mt. Gwakgeol in Songjeong.

The precautions for citizens are as follows: - Hiking is prohibited in these areas.

- Keep doors closed near the affected areas.

- Drinking natural mineral water is prohibited.

- Beekeepers must harvest all honeycomb.

often see female patients in their 60s with wrist fractures. It is common to see these kinds of fractures in osteoporosis sufferers after they’ve used their hands to break a fall.

Osteoporosis refers to a condition in which bone density decreases due to a lack of calcium, which can cause severe pain and frequent fractures. It is known to occur in postmenopausal women, but recent studies show that women in their 20s or 30s can also develop osteoporosis as a result of poor nutrition due to dieting. It can also occur in males since the disease is also caused by smoking, drinking, stress, chronic fatigue, and aging. Osteoporo-

sis occurs more frequently in winter when there is less sunshine, also excessive use of sunscreen can contribute to the condition.

In Korean medicine, osteoporosis is called ‘gol-wee’. It is defined as a weakening of the kidneys, which manage bone health and hormonal functions. Once calcium begins to decrease in the bones, it is very hard to recover. So even if people have no symptoms, they should make efforts to prevent its onset after menopause. A lot of studies in Korean Medicine show excellent effects of achyranthes, eucommia bark and deer antlers in prevention of osteoporosis.

To prevent osteoporosis, maintaining a well-balanced diet is

vital. It is beneficial to eat foods high in calcium, such as small fish that can be eaten whole, soybeans, sea weed, sesame, and milk, and foods that are high in vitamin D, such as butter, eggs, and shiitake mushrooms. Exercising such as hiking, walking, biking, and other aerobic activity on a regular basis is helpful. Additionally, spending time in the sun, and reducing coffee, cigarettes, and alcoholic drinks is also crucial.

BRING YOUR HAND-DRAWN FISH TO LIFE

One, two, three, four, five, once I caught a fish alive~ Yes, it’s alive in the Art Aquarium! Once you put your painting on the screen, it comes alive! You should try it, too. Oops, something went wrong with mine… what a shame. Apparently it’s so simple, even toddlers can do it. Oh well.

MUST-VISIT HAEUNDAE!

Once again, the Korean Tourism Organization has listed Haeundae as one of the 100 must-visit tourist attractions in Korea. I knew it! By the way, if it’s ‘recommended’ to visit, that means there are still people who’ve never been to Haeundae. Wow! That’s even more surprising!

CHERRY BLOSSOMS HAVE GONE AWAY

The cherry blossoms arrived a bit earlier this year. Since they bloomed early, they floated away even sooner. Thanks to the rain they were gone by the beginning of April! The blossoms disappeared before I could listen to the song ‘Cherry blossoms ending’ more than once. I hope we don’t have too much spring rain next year, I’m looking forward to seeing them already.
