The Roland Park Tennis Courts
In the early 1900s, our Baltimore Country Club's Roland Park grass tennis courts were considered among the finest in the country. Not long after joining the National Lawn Tennis Association in 1904, the Club hosted the first in a long series of qualifying matches for Davis Cup hopefuls. The Maryland State and Middle Atlantic Championships, which started in 1905 under a different name, were gaining in popularity at BCC, enjoying national and eventually international recognition. In 1939, the tournament had 90 players, including future great Jack Kramer who won the doubles that year. A year after that, women’s singles and doubles were added. ◆
