HOW IS THE CITY FED?

Food deserts are a product of spatial disinvestment fueled by a consolidation of global food provisioning that leaves low-income urban neighborhoods without access to fresh food. Lack of access results in widespread socio-economic problems like poor diet and preventable diseases, but also to larger spatial injustices like less green space, higher crime and general disinvestment. Food web complexities mask the root causes of access problems as a lack of effort. However, urban agriculture has thrived since at least the Industrial Revolution.

Allied disciplines are partially responsible for spatial disparity, but we have the tools for change. Plenty of examples of citizen driven, municipality funded and private enterprise operations exist around the world. However, in order for garden projects to succeed, local customs and cultures must be recognized, respected and embraced by institutional and professional authorities.

The global food system trys to provision us all with the same foodstuffs, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach solution to food scarcity or to community gardens because there is no such approach to communities. Challenges for urban agriculture mostly include economics and access to capital and land, which is why urban agriculture is inextricably linked to tactical urbanism. Landscape architecture has the tools to help solve food access problems, from influencing policy and servicing grassroots initiatives to the age old method of using plants for aesthetic quality. 87102
