She’s been part of Channel 7’s astronomically successful Sunrise for 10 years, but even when Melissa Doyle was a girl she was aiming for the stars.

“When I was little I wanted to be an astronaut,” she says. “Then I think I wanted to be a vet for a while and then a journo. At least I got one out of them.

“Vets do such an amazing job, but I think I chose wisely not to become one. Even now when I have to give my cat a worm tablet, I’m like, ‘awww, sorry’.”

It’s her big heart and down-to-earth nature that’s won her respect from people all over the country.

“I’m a human-being fi rst and foremost. I know I’m a journalist, but I would like to think my humanity is up higher on the scale than my journalism,” she says.

“There are things you go through in your life that leave an impression and make you the person you are.

For me a lot of those experiences have come through my job. I would hate to think I’d ever become so heartless that I don’t walk away and think like that. If ever it changes, then I become a heartless cow and may as well give up.”

She’s talking about tragic events such as the Victorian bushfi res and cyclone Yasi, saying the bushfi res were the saddest thing she’s ever covered. On the other hand, she

fi nds great reward in covering charity events such as telethons and World Vision trips.

“I’m an ambassador for the Sydney Children’s Hospital and visit the kids, but the mum in me sits in the car and cries,” she says. “With World Vision, I come home from some of those places like Mongolia and just think it is luck of the draw I was born here.”

All holed up: Hibernating and hot water bottles – if you can’t indulge in some Fiji fun, then holing up at home has to be the next best thing, right? Just the thought of snuggling under a duck-feather doona, wearing your favourite Peter Alexander slippers and sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows is enough to make you sizzle, especially if you’re in front of the heater – or better yet, a fireplace.

Being a working mother is something many can relate to. It sparked Mel’s fi rst book – Working Mother’s Survival Guide – and this year she is writing another one.

Time for a fix: The fashion, of course, where would we be without a trench or two, boots (in several colours), layers, gloves, scarves, metallic jumpers, tights (assorted tints), leather pants, knits, long-sleeve dresses and hot hats (various shades). There’s something about winter fashion that just screams class and chic. If you need a quick winter fashion fix, now’s the time. Don’t forget those August winds can be a killer.

“I love that mums have taken me into their hearts and treated me like a friend. We’re all going through the same things and I don’t think it really matters if you’re Angelina Jolie, or me, or my girlfriend. Angelina has a different wardrobe to me – and Brad – but, big deal, she still has to get up, clean her teeth, decide what to eat for breakfast and go to work.

Meal makeovers: Food, glorious food, winter is perfect weather for soulful fare.

Mouth-watering soups, casseroles and roast dinners go hand in hand with June, July and August. Restaurants give their menus a makeover and supermarkets give out pea and ham soup recipes. Plus you can eat as much as you want and no one will notice those few extra kilos because of all the layers you are wearing.

“I think it’s important for women that we back each other.”

While she may have started out wanting to be an astronaut, you may see Mel working in a coffee shop one day. Her morning vitamin is a short black.

“I love the whole process. On the weekends I grind the beans and make it from scratch,” she says.

Strong, arched eyebrows, defined cheekbones with a flush of bronzed vitality, true-red lips and black-lined eyes, Alexandra Ford epitomises the glamour of old Hollywood on page 24. The sultry look starts with the eyes, according to Runway Express Experience’s Nikola Stockbridge and Abbey Dalgleish.

“Create definition by sweeping a matte brown eyeshadow to your socket line and soften with apricot eyeshadow,” Abbey says.

“Add a shimmer champagne eyeshadow to the inner corners of your eyes, under the eyebrow arch and to your cupid’s bow to give the illusion of a femme fatale pout.”

Apply black gel eyeliner to the top of your eyelid and, using a small angled brush, give a flick to the outer corners.

“You can use sticky tape or a business card to achieve a straight line, or you can press a dark brown shadow under your outer lower lashes and meet this up with the top line, heading in

the direction of the end of your eyebrows,” Abbey says. Use a full coverage foundation and set with pressed powder.

Abbey contoured Alexandra’s cheekbones using a Napoleon Perdis contour palette, sweeping on apricot blush to keep the skin fresh. Use a red lipliner over your foundation and powdered lips.

False lashes are the finishing touch.

e l o MODEL She distracted the nation in an itsy bitsy, teeny weeny, GC-designed bikini, but we’re about to see a lot more of Jodi Gordon, writes Chantay Logan Most of us would have been huddled inside, defrosting our fi ngers around a coffee, when we opened the morning paper to pages splashed with Jodi Gordon’s 2Chillies’ debut.

All long, honey-coloured limbs and big, warm smile, she delivered the requisite sunshine on a rainy day, frolicking at Palm Cove for the Gold Coast swimwear label.

“I’m so excited – Queeeeenslander!” says the model and actress of her twoyear deal as the brand’s ambassador.

“I love that it’s a Queensland brand.

“I’m a Mackay girl, but we moved around quite a bit.

“We lived on the Gold Coast for a few years when I was about 10 and we used to go back for Christmas when I was 17 or 18.

“I haven’t been back for a while, but (fiance) Braith and I like going on holi-

days and it’s always nice to go home.”

The 27-year-old former Home and Away star sees the ambassador role as a chance to explore other creative avenues, including designing a capsule range for the label.

“Designing swimwear – it’s a dream come true,” Jodi says.

“I’m going to have a meeting with them soon and hopefully I’ll do a little capsule range for next summer.

“I’ve been doing my homework looking at different prints and bold colours, and different kinds of designs.

“I like classic pieces personally, but I’ll try and incorporate really beautiful multi-colours and prints.

“I’ve designed a couple of other personal projects before.”

Magazine’s newest teen protege, Jodi got her start by winning a modelling competition at 13.

“I remember I did a shoot for a magazine called Australian Style,” she says.

“I was 14 and I did a cover with two other girls and the headline was ‘14, sexy and exploited?’ I feel like that tag has been put on the modelling industry for a long time and it’s always going to be there, but it’s up to the individual.

“When I was young and modelling my mum came everywhere with me – when I went to Japan, she was there.

“People were always very helpful and very respectful that I was a child, so I never ran into any problems.

“As long as the girls that are modelling at a young age have really good support behind them and great management then I don’t see why they shouldn’t.”

The early exposure doesn’t seem to have done any damage.

Jodi is refreshingly real and has a healthy perspective on the scrutiny that dogs her athletic fi gure and increasingly bold style choices.

“As I’m getting older I’m more comfortable in my skin and able to take a few risks – as long as I feel really sexy and good with what I’m wearing,” she says.

“I’m all about complementing my body.

“Because I’m short I won’t wear anything that makes me look short.

“But as long as I’m confident in what I’m wearing I’m happy to take risks.”

As sartorial gambles go, Jodi says the feathered Toni Maticevski frock she fl aunted at a Myer parade last year is up there.

“I remember seeing it on the hanger when I went to my girlfriend’s house for a fitting and it was totally outrageous,” she says.

“I looked at her and said ‘wow that’s

amazing, but I’d never wear it’. I put it on and it just felt amazing, so I decided to wear it.

“Toni Maticevski makes the most beautiful stuff – it’s one of my favourite labels.”

While fashion fascinates, it’s acting that has won Jodi’s heart, beginning with a Logie-winning stint in Home and Away as Martha MacKenzie.

She fl irted with fi lm – in 2011 release, The Cup, and Any Questions for Ben? – and returned to TV for Nine’s telemovie Blood Brothers.

“Ohhh…acting, acting’s my thing,” Jodi says.

“It stimulates me and it makes me feel creative. I love the art of acting.

It’s amazing.”

Jodi will be back on our screens soon for Underbelly: Badness.

“I’ve seen the fi rst episode and the acting and the story itself is going to be phenomenal,” she says.

“I play Kylie Keogh who is the senior media liason for Strike Force Tuno.

“Strike Force Tuno is the team of detectives and police officers that over a decade tried to put (underworld figure) Anthony Perish away. They sentenced him to jail for 18 years.

“It took a long time – it’s the story of that whole journey.”

Jodi says playing Kylie has been the most fun of her acting career.

“I think that by getting married you kind of become more one, more of a team,” she says.

“I really wish it was a bigger part,” she says. “The character had so many different layers and it was a more serious role for me. She’s intelligent, quite fun loving and one of the boys, but the actual purpose of her being in this story was very serious.

“It was good for me to have all of those elements.”

While fi lming wrapped in June and the sinister storyline will hit our screens any minute, Jodi’s still got a lot going on thanks to leading man, rugby league luminary Braith Anasta.

“My wedding is in October,” she says.

“Filming Underbelly at the start of the year was good, but now I’ve got some time off it’s fantastic as I can make sure I get everything right.

“Braith and I talk about things together and he just says, you know, ‘do what you want, go for it babe, but check in with me every now and then to make sure we’re on the same page’.

“Even though we’ve been living together for ages and it feels like we’re already there, I do feel like when you make those promises to each other it’s a step into a different stage.”

While kids are on the agenda down the track, the couple currently have their hands full with their “very naughty” husky, Snowy.

“He’s the best dog in the world, but he’s really hard work and he needs to run all the time,” Jodi says.

Not that the four-legged exercise enforcer doesn’t come in handy with a wedding and swimwear shoots on the cards.

“2Chillies is my fi rst swimwear ambassador role and I’m taking it quite seriously,” Jodi says.

“We make sure it’s a team effort.”

“I want to provide the best shots for them and that means looking after yourself and making sure you’re fit and you’re healthy. It can be a bit nervewracking, but the excitement overrides the nerves.

Knit top: Clearly, I source a lot from where I work, but I guess I just practice what I preach.

I love knits and I also love pieces that are a bit tough too. Whenever I wear something girly I make sure I team it with something a bit edgier, whether that’s a bulldog motif, some leather or some studs.

How to: O Use a natural bristle brush and start once or twice a week then build from there.

O No more than seven strokes on each part of the body.

you mite have an allergy Having dark circles under your eyes and waking up still feeling tired may be connected, but not the way you think.

They’re both possible symptoms of hayfever, an allergy that has doubled in prevalence in Australia over the past 15 years and now effects up to a quarter of the population.

The traditional “sneeze season” of spring is almost upon us, when those who have allergies to pollen and grasses, which is one form of hayfever, start to feel the effects of congestion, headaches, sore eyes and sneezing, and often a tiredness brought on by poor sleep because they breathe through their mouths.

But that comfy doona and other bedding that’s kept you warm over winter may well be incubating dust mites, the

other major trigger for hayfever, which is on the rise.

Gold Coast allergy expert Assoc Professor Pete Smith says hayfever is probably the most common allergy in Australia.

“We’re becoming more allergic as a population – we are developing more allergies,” he says. “Around 15-25 per cent of the population are affected by hayfever, or allergic rhinitis, but it was rare 200 years ago.

“Modern living practices are partly at fault, with an increase in dust mites.

“We now have carpets, more luxurious bedding, doonas rather than blankets that get washed, and we’ve gone from hot wash to cold, and we leave our houses locked up, all of which incubates dust mites, the most common cause of hayfever.”

Symptoms can be mild to severe, and for those allergic to pollens and grasses, living in Queensland means you can be living with the symptoms for as much as 10 months a year because of our extended grass pollinating season.

Dr Smith says people sometimes don’t realise they’re having an allergic reaction.

“Women using eye creams to hide or get rid of dark circles may be wasting their time and money as dark circles are one symptom, as is mouth-breathing, which causes dry lips.”

Waking up unrefreshed is another indicator, because if you’re mouth breathing it interrupts your sleep.

Also more than four sneezes a day isn’t normal, neither is having an itchy

nose for more than an hour a day.

While symptoms are most commonly treated with antihistamines, Dr Smith says the allergy can be “turned off” through immunotherapy, or a desensitisation in which your body builds up a tolerance to the allergen over time.

“It can be the most cost-effective treatment for some people. It’s around $35-70 a month over three to five years of treatment.

“If you have something affecting your quality of life and affecting your sleep, then looking at something like $1-2 a day and turning the disease off for five to seven years can be cost effective.”

Dr Smith says the fi rst step in treating hayfever is to be accurately tested for what you are actually allergic to.

Triple Ironwoman and Coolangatta Gold champion Hayley Bateup is ready to tackle a new trifecta of challenges: retirement, marriage and motherhood, reports Ann Wason Moore She’s the warrior ironwoman who rules the ocean as a solo spirit, but Hayley Bateup is ready to ride a new wave … to retirement, marriage and motherhood.

After a decade dominating her sport, the 32 year old knows her competitive days are numbered and, after more than six years with girlfriend April Zekulich, she realises she’s ready to start a new phase of their life together as a family.

It’s a time of transitions for the former Gladiator television star, and triple Coolangatta Gold and triple Australian Ironwoman champion, but Hayley says she’s up for the challenge.

With her white-blonde shock of short hair, deep tan and green eyes, the ironwoman in the flesh lives up to her legendary status – focused, honest and driven.

“I’m in a good place right now, even just four months ago I was still freaking out about the idea of retirement. I feel like I’ve found a path and a plan,” says Hayley, dressed in a fi re enginered tracksuit that speaks volumes – slightly sexy but perfectly practical.

“I’m not ready to retire yet. I feel like I have an exit strategy over the next few years.

“Part of that plan is that April and I want to have a baby. We’d like to start next year, which would mean when I’m done competing I’ll be ready to tackle motherhood.

“April will carry the baby, we’ve done a lot of planning and talking about it.

It’s a scary thing to even think about being a parent, but family is everything and I think we’re ready.

“I wouldn’t say I’m a super-maternal person. I know I want to do this – and I love my dogs like babies, so this can only be better,” she laughs.

Hayley says she’d love to marry fellow surf lifesaver April – if and when gay marriage becomes a legal option.

Despite campaigning for causes such as Hervey Bay’s Paddle out for Whales, she says she hasn’t yet become involved in the fi ght for marriage equality.

“I know I should. April and I would defi nitely marry if it was legal. I just don’t see the point in going through any ceremony right now if it’s not

The straight facts on gay marriage In Australia gay people do not have the right to marry, but are recognised as de-facto couples with the same rights as straight people living together.

A February Galaxy poll showed 62 per cent of Australians support gay marriage, with 61 per cent wanting same-sex marriage legislation passed in this term of government.

In anticipation of a vote on marriage equality this year, campaign group Australian Marriage Equality has launched a new website that includes information on the position of all MPs and Senators and which allows supporters of reform to send a letter directly to their local federal representatives.

Obviously I care about it, but I just haven’t got involved yet. It’s not something that I personally need, but it’s something that I should have the option to choose.

In the meantime, Hayley has plenty to occupy her time.

She recently started her own personal training business, Bateup’s Body Blitz, and is racing to keep up with its success.

With April’s aid, Hayley says the venture is a new horizon for her.

“The idea of retirement has always scared me, what will I do when I’m not Hayley Bateup Ironwoman?

“I set up the personal training as an idea of a transitional career and it has been amazing.

“I feel like I’ve found something that I can settle into long-term that won’t make me feel ‘retired’.

“I’ll still be active. I’ll still be out there seeing other competitors and I’ve been training other athletes too.

“It’s also a job with huge personal satisfaction – April has just fi nished her PT course too, so we can work together, and I’ve made so many new, real friends out of the people I’m training.”

Hayley says while she’s keeping the training groups limited to Currumbin Alley and Broadbeach for now, she has plans to expand postcompetitive retirement.

“My grand plan is to make it to the 2014 World Surf Life Saving Championships in France and tailor off over the next year from there.

“I don’t plan to paddle off into the sunset, it’s just going to be time to start the next stage of my life. Who knows?

April might be waiting with the baby at the fi nal fi nishing line.”

“Hours on hours, months on months have gone into preparing for the show, including music, model castings, hair, make-up looks – the list goes on,” she says.

“Every year since then I did work experience at the festival and now I am going to be part of it.”

Growing up in North Queensland, Kirsten spent her days exploring the Great Barrier Reef and hasn’t left sun-soaked days behind as she embarks on a fashion career.

From an ex-AFL player to a local school girl who’s huge in Korea, more than 250 hopefuls turned out for MBFF’s model casting.

A call went out to the genetically blessed and they responded in unprecedented numbers.

“The Gold Coast is very relaxed and beautiful,” she says.

Yasmin Baildon, daughter of swimming star Andrew, was also flying the Gold Coast fl ag.

“I love waking up early, going for a run along Burleigh beach and starting a day in the studio off in such a positive way.

After initially forgetting her comp cards, she wowed the judges to make the cut for two swimwear shows.

“The most challenging thing about launching a label is the long hours.

“There were so many girls there – it was nerve-wracking,” she says.

“Sometimes I work 18-hour days, but the most important part is knowing how to switch off over the weekends and enjoy the amazing cafes and beaches.”

“I’ve been overseas for past festivals, so I’m really excited to have booked it on my fi rst year casting.”

Kirsten says Gold Coast designers, who will have a strong presence in the swimwear category, are particularly good at keeping it local.

“The majority of my cutting, printing and sewing is done on the Gold Coast,” she says.

“I believe strongly in manufacturing within Australia.

“So many Gold Coast designers are keeping it in Australia and local and you really can see the difference in the quality.”

That’s not to say she wouldn’t mind a little international attention.

“I would love for Selena Gomez

Set to fi nish high school in November, Yasmin’s career is about to take off.

“I’ve just been offered to go over to Germany at the beginning of next year for three months, and after that Los Angeles,” she says.

“I do a lot of photographic work, lingerie and swimwear.

“I think the biggest thing for me work-wise would probably be to book Victoria’s Secret, or be on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

“Or just be successful in what I do, fi nish school and possibly go to uni where I’m looking at doing business and maybe criminology.”

Coming out of the closet

I must be a sado-masochist.

Cleaning out my wardrobe, I realised it was like a page out of 50 Shades of Grey.

Except this isn’t anything kinky, unless you count all the wrinkles in my nevermet-an-iron outfits. This is more like 50 Shades of Used-to-be-Whites.

For someone who loves fashion as much as I honestly do, I have a funny way of showing it. I treat dresses like a literal doormat; I shed shoes from one end of the house to another; I jam jeans into the crannies of the cupboards.

Yet when it comes time to wear such an item again, I beg forgiveness, pleading with the stain-remover stick to just this once erase that skinnycino spot.

I promise to wash, iron and hang ’til death

(or the charity bin) do us part. Then I do it all again. My clothes are in such disordered chaos that every time I do dare tidy, I always discover half a dozen items I forgot I had bought and have never worn.

It’s not that there’s no room to hang everything. It’s just that my clothes never manage to make it from my body to the hanger without making a lengthy layover on the floor.

But this actually begs another question: where did my clothes hangers come from?

I do not recall buying a single one.

And as negligent a clothes-owner as I am, I would never choose to own a tangle of vicious wire hangers. Every time I lift one off the rack it’s accompanied by its twisted siblings caught on straps and loops.

So this weekend to Ikea I will go. It’s time to liberate myself and my lovers (of the clothing variety) from this wardrobe bondage.

How to bluff If you tune out sometimes when it comes to all things footy, or ask for ice cubes to add to your glass of chardonnay, then these tips are for you, writes Lauren Paris

Being a wine buff Perhaps you don’t yet have an appreciation for all things “pinot”, or have any idea when it comes to palate cleansing.

These days, according to Nick Potts, bar manager at the Sheraton Mirage Resort and Spa Gold Coast’s Pearls Bar, there is no need to be a wine connoisseur or try to match wines with your menu, “just drink whatever it is you enjoy”.

“You’d have to have a very sophisticated palate to be able to identify if a particular wine suits certain food,” he says.

In his line of work, Nick says he has come across plenty of interesting folk who think they know what they’re talking about when it comes to wine.

“You can read the back of the bottle to see the flavours, in my experience.”

Nick says you can’t go wrong when mentioning passionfruit, lychees and citrus to describe fl avours in an NZ sauvignon blanc.

“Lots of women ask for ice to be added to their white wine. It may be nice and refreshing, but the colder wine is, the more the flavours are masked.”

Fine dining After you’ve selected a wine, when the waiter brings it over to present to you, you’re looking that the brand is correct – the one you selected, that the grape variety is right, that the vintage is the one you require and if the label is correct.

Taste test Nick says when the waiter pours a small amount of the wine for tasting, it’s a common misconception that you’re confirming whether you like the taste.

“The purpose is not to see if you like it, it’s to see if it has any faults. It’s more for show these days,” Nick says.

The house wine Requesting this is about as helpful as turning up at a bar and asking for “a beer”.

It is best to be specific, Nick says.

Watching the footy Whether you’re going to a game for your fi rst date or heading to a friend’s place for a barbecue that happens to coincide with some sports-watching – especially with fi nals fever around the corner – it can help to know a bit about the game.

“If they start yelling and cheering, or dropping the ‘f-bomb’ then you know what they’re like. Or, if it’s cold, you can use that as an opportunity to put your arm around them,” he says.

It was shot by George Favios (a Brisbane-born fashion and beauty photographer who travels the world shooting the most amazing women), styled by Elizabeth Macpherson (Elle’s sister) and makeup by Casey. It was a special day with a special team, shot in Sydney’s Manly.

New York may be a beacon for fame-seekers, but with more pretty faces per capita (someone’s done the research, right?) the Gold Coast is earning an international reputation as the breeding ground.

While models like Alexandra Ford, 23, from Hope Island, have had a taste of the Big Apple, they’ve still got their well-manicured feet planted on local ground.

“I moved to the USA where I was signed with Elite,” says Alexandra, who has posed for campaigns in Mexico, the Bahamas and California.

“It opened up a lot of doors.

“But the Gold Coast is my home soil. It was such a great place to learn the ropes and prepare for the Big Apple.”

Teetering on the edge of an infi nity pool on a blustery winter’s day for our shoot, there’s little clue the piercingly blue-eyed beauty has been nursing the flu for a month.

Alexandra says a lot of beautiful things have happened for a lot of beautiful people on the Gold Coast.

“Shooting in water in Sydney on the weekend didn’t help, but I love my job, so I’m not complaining,” she says.

“I admire Julia Koenig, also a Division model, who is so beautiful inside and out.

Ever the professional, Alexandra even called “raincheck” on her upcoming nuptials to fi ance Greg Dorozario.

Where do you like to hang out on the Gold Coast?

“We are getting married October 4, next year,” she says. “We had a lot organised because we were supposed to be getting married this October, but due to work commitments we had to push it back.”

Tell us a bit about your fiance.

We were best friends for five years before we got together. It wouldn’t have worked back then – he was so busy running businesses and I was travelling with work. But we were drawn to each other at the perfect time and now we are getting married.

He proposed to me at South Stradbroke Island in our little camping spot. We had just seen dolphins.

Open any man’s dictionary and you will get the same defi nition.

You can’t be a woman without being a walking, talking contradiction. Their life mantra is a contradiction.

Nail polish and shoes will prove the contradiction of women.

Women say it’s all about what’s inside, yet, you only need to look at a woman’s nail polish and shoes to work them out, inside and out.

“It’s what’s inside that counts.”

Nail polish and shoes speak more words than the dictionary I used to start this column off.

They’re so used to contradicting, they actually believe themselves when they roll that line out through the pain of their overused vocal chords. Which brings me to the topic of this column.

Pastel nails. You’re the girl you can take home to mum for the Sunday roast. Girl next door, polite and doesn’t like to upset.

Nail polish. Well, nail polish and shoes.

You didn’t see that one coming did you?

Black nail polish means one of two things … you’re either gothic or you dress to fit your mood. In that case, you’re high maintenance.

Given this is a women’s mag, I thought I’d write this column to fit how the female brain works.

Girls who wear red are confident, like to be in control, have a nasty streak and are a touch lazy because it goes with most things you wear.

You started reading, worked out where I was heading, than bang you were hit with something random that kind of threw you.

Women who have those white tip things want to look classy and try and pretend they are. Often they’re not.

Welcome to a man’s world – you do it to us everyday.

Given you’re used to it, this column probably makes perfect sense.

Girls who have patterns on their nails are self-obsessed. They spend way too much time trying to look good.

Like you tell us everyday, there’s a reason for your mood swings. It’s the same with this column.

It does mean they’re immaculate and it’s comforting to know they won’t have patches of hair on

their legs because of a dodgy shaving job.

Then there are shoes. The obvious ones are the “(insert four-letter word) me” boots.

I actually think girls who wear these want to intimidate the male race, but aren’t as tough as they make out.

The ones that wear the superhigh, skinny heels (that’s my technical term, you might know them as stilettos) are the ones you know want a good time … they can’t walk in them, so they hope they can get them off in the bedroom as soon as possible.

Flats. Well there’s a fair chance you’re a lesbian because you’re not out to impress. And sandals … well I hope you’ve done your toenails.

Actually that’s a column for another time.

Given this was my debut in this mag, there’s no guarantee I’ll be back.

The lady bosses say it’s a regular gig, but it’s run by women, so allowing for contradictions this might be my fi rst and my last.

There’s an even bigger chance it’s my last because I forgot to check what nail polish they wear.

After graduating from the Cinematography Programme at the New York Film Academy earlier this year, she’s working in the camera department on fi lm sets as a first and second assistant camera.

“Every movie you meet a new group of people who you end up loving like a family,” Bec says.

“Making movies is always portrayed as glamorous, but it’s the total opposite.

By the time I wrap out each day and get home, it’s usually a 14-hour day.

You have to work in extreme conditions sometimes, rain, heat or snow for hours on end and I lug equipment all around the city, up stairs, across fields.”

She graced our screens in last year’s series of X-Factor, now musician and entertainer Cleo Howman, 25, also has the title of Miss Humanity Australia under her belt.

“There were 220 applicants nationally. The Miss Humanity Australia sets itself apart from other pageants as they want to change the perception of beauty by the contestants being inspirational, compassionate women of the world and role models advocating human rights,” she says.

Originally from Brisbane, Cleo moved to the Coast in 2004 to study Popular Music at the Griffith Conservatorium. She relocated to Melbourne with her partner last year to further her career.

Cleo’s fi rst humanitarian experience was in 2002 on a school trip to Bangkok with the Stuartholme Vocal Ensemble.

“We shared the gift of music with orphans and HIV/Aids victims, which was an incredibly touching experience. Since then I have had involvement with ISPCAN (International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect), International Women’s Day, Olivia NewtonJohn’s Breast Cancer Charity and am currently entering a mentoring program with Victorian not-forprofit charity, Kids Under Cover,” she says.

He has survived a landslide and earthquake in the Timor Mountains, dodged bullets in a riot in Rabaul and even kissed a bearded village woman, but when it comes to the interesting life of Dr Cameron Nobbs, 45, the word “champion” springs to mind.

This inspiring man has a list of achievements as long as Miranda Kerr’s legs.

He’s met presidents, prime ministers, ambassadors, high priests, military figures, professors and countless children.

Dr Nobbs was the founding principal of the Arundel State School in 1994 at the age of 26. Within four years of its opening it became Australia’s second largest and fasting-growing school.

While he happily admits being the type who would rather laze on the beach or enjoy a long lunch, Dr Nobbs has served as principal for four other schools and has completed a doctorate, two masters degrees, two bachelor degrees and a teaching diploma. After being raised in Brisbane, he now calls both Surfers Paradise and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG) home.

Dr Nobbs is currently working in PNG as the international education adviser

to the Minister of Education Papua New Guinea, a role which involves travelling throughout all national provinces and many remote villages to develop the fi rst national quality school standards framework for PNG and the professional competencies framework for teachers and principals.

He has worked on a variety of international projects with organisations including the United Nations, World Bank, Asia Development Bank, AusAID and more.

“Results [include] the development of elementary, primary and secondary education in these countries. Introduction and establishment of ‘free education’ in PNG and the development and facilitation of a variety of principal and teacher training packages,” he says.

Stem cell research is “blue-sky” territory

The Gold Coast’s reputation as a surgical centre has secured it one of Australia’s only stem cell research clinics.

The laboratory will open at Southport’s Cosmedic and Skin Clinic later this month, headed by internationally recognised director of Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories Professor Richard Boyd.

Professor Boyd says Gold Coast residents are perfectly positioned to take advantage of the medical trials.

“The applications for use of adult

stem cells seem virtually limitless but what we’re starting with on the Gold Coast is knee joints,” he says.

“Given the high profi le of sports – and sports injuries – here, it’s a great location to get a wide crosssection of patients.

“What we hope to see is that injections of adult stem cells into arthritic and damaged knee joints will rapidly facilitate healing – fi rst by reducing pain and then hopefully by encouraging rebuilding of the joint.

“Ultimately, we want to see a future where knee replacements themselves can be replaced by

injections of stem cells.

“In the short-time though we would simply like to see these injections replace traditional antiinfl ammatory pain relief treatments, which are frequently prone to side effects.”

Professor Boyd says stem cell therapy can be applied to a host of possible health problems.

From Alzheimer’s to lupus to irritable bowel syndrome, he says it’s “blue sky” territory.

“Basically you’re talking about enabling cells to repair and regenerate themselves – so it really is almost limitless,” he says.

“It’s easier because there are so many avenues to explore – Etsy, eBay, blogs and Facebook – and harder because it means there is a lot of competition out there. If you are going to make it, you really have to have the passion to persevere and to enjoy making the objects for their own sake.�

Susan says copying a piece of jewellery or clothing you like is the best way to build technique. “A lot of people want to draw up the designs and start at the top, but when you haven’t mastered the technique – whether it’s beading or leatherwork, sewing or embroidery – your efforts can look childish,� she says. “I always tell Olivia, start with something you like and try to copy it. As you make it you can put your own twist on it, a different colour for example. “The more accomplished you become with your technique, the more experimental and original you can afford to become.�

Susan says most important of all is to be your own walking advertisement. “When you’ve made it, wear it. Or if it’s homewares, display it. Give your pieces away when you start, just get them out there, get people talking. “Essentially, that’s why online marketing works so well – it’s an international conversation about your creations. And, with any luck, you can one day quit your day job.�

It was my step-father. The police would tell him he was a naughty boy and that was it, but mum would have broken ribs.

I used to go to bed every night listening for when he came home and wishing it was someone who was coming to rescue us.

We never had any money and we couldn’t afford to have the central heating on. We’d have to go to bed about 5pm to get warm.

I remember one night going to bed and thinking “I’m going to work really hard and get a good job and rescue children”.

That was the moment I decided if I was ever in a position to help children like me, I would.

People like us didn’t go to university in those days. Margaret Thatcher made that possible.

My real dad always lived in Australia, and when I was 30 I decided to head here and see where it would take me. I landed a good job in Sydney and met Ed, my next-door neighbour.

We fell in love, got married and then had trouble trying to fall pregnant.

That’s when I told him of my promise about fostering children who need help.

He was keen, but we were both concerned about having to give them up.

After eight years of fertility treatment and two doctors telling me not to bother and to “fi ll my life with other things” we had Ethan (now seven) and then Luca (now three).

I lived in council housing in Birmingham and everyone at university was talking like “oh darling”, had pictures of their houses in their wallets, and was into polo and things like that.

I conveniently forgot about my promise for a bit, but it nagged on my mind.

They were so posh and I had no idea this world existed. I remember feeling out of my depth. I studied languages – Ger-

After five months, the baby boy is back with his mother. She turned her life around and got it totally on track.

I had a huge lump in my throat and I was literally throwing things out of the car on to the curb to get out of there quickly because I knew how happy she was and it was her moment. I didn’t want to ruin it for her by having her need to nurse me and the baby.

I had a really good cry on the way home, but then you get on with it. You miss them but people think that handing children back is like handing over one of you own children, and it’s not.

I would rather die than hand one of my children over to someone else, but it’s not like that with these children. You know from day one they’re not yours.

You miss them, but it’s not like having your heart ripped out of your chest.

All the girls are having contact with their parents. In some cases and for whatever reasons, parents can be unreliable with contact and the children are bitterly disappointed.

They’re a mess when that happens.

That’s part of the problem.

The whole time you’re trying to build up their little self-esteems and that will bring them crashing down again.

All you can do, I’ve realised, is to do what you say you’re going to do.

You can’t control what the parents do, there’s no words that can comfort them when parents consistently fail to show up for contact.

All you can do is keep your word and show them that most adults can be trusted.

You know you hear all that new age stuff about fi nding happiness within, well I don’t really subscribe to that.

True happiness and fulfi lment for me is found outside, when you start doing things for others.

Fostering these children gives me a sense of purpose. They turn up so fragile and damaged and you have an opportunity to restore their trust in adults.

Disposable fashion is polluting our planet, says owner of edgy fashion boutique Cubic Collective Julia Wilson.

“Choose to invest in a piece that is versatile and good quality, that you are going to wear for longer instead of buying cheap and easy fashion,” she says.

“A lot of cheap polyester clothes are worn once and end up as landfi ll.”

Loved by locals and holiday-makers, Julia’s store in Surfers Paradise is a collection of original pieces designed by her husband, Andy, along with Australian labels and eco-brands, such as Swedish jeans company Nudie.

She also showcases her husband Andy’s designs under the label Rufus Green, which are hand-made in Bali.

Since Nudie’s inception, the company now also recycles its water and has sourced fair-trade-certified organic cotton and denim.

“The biggest thing in denim manufacturing is recycling the water because the blue dye is often pumped back into the ocean and that chemical doesn’t break down,” she says.

Staying abreast

The PIP breast implant scare caused anxiety and confusion for hundreds of thousands of women worldwide and brought into question the safety or otherwise of silicone-fi lled implants.

More than two years since the faulty implants were recalled from sale, the ripple effects are still being felt with commentators questioning just how well informed women are about the risks associated with breast enhancement surgery and implant devices.

At the very least, the PIP affair has prompted a surge of information, which while aimed at reassuring post-operative women of their safety, simultaneously has provided those considering the procedure the ability to be incredibly informed about the potential risks.

It has been the upside of the PIP publicity storm, says Dr Daniel Fleming, spokesman for the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery.

“People are being more cautious since PIP and asking more questions, which is a good thing,” he says.

“There are questions you should ask and you should certainly consider getting more than one opinion, but don’t get eight opinions or you’ll just end up confused.

“In general terms, it’s very safe. It’s been done for over 50 years.”

Risk factors Despite being around for fi ve decades and as one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, it is not risk-free, regardless of the type or safety record of the implant.

“This is surgery, so it has all the risks of any operation,” says Dr Fleming.

Included in these risks is that posed by general anaesthesia, which carries a one-in-100,000 chance of death in healthy people.

“Then there are the specific risks for this particular operation,” says Dr Fleming.

He says it’s not dangerous to a woman’s health and some women choose to put up with it rather than have further surgery, which is more risky and more difficult the second and subsequent times.

“Make sure you have a clear understanding.”

“The bottom line is that ... it (occurs in) at least one-in-five (implants) by 10 years, so 20 per cent.

Dr Fleming’s patient consent form lists 19 specific complications that can arise from breast enhancement surgery.

“To fi x it requires further surgery and that’s more difficult than the fi rst go.”

The most common of these is capsular contraction, which occurs when the tissues that normally form around the implant contract and compress it like shrink wrap.

Dr Fleming says increasing numbers of surgeons are opting for a type of implant approved in Australia in recent years, known as the “fuzzy Brazilian”, which has a lower rate of capsular contraction, of around one-in100 by 10 to 15 years.

Dr Fleming says in mild cases the implant feels fi rmer, while in worst cases the implant feels hard, can be painful and can go out of shape.

of the situation Rupture & leakage Rupture of the implants causing the silicone or saline fi lling to leak into the body is another risk factor, and was at the core of the PIP scare. The risk of rupture increases over time, so the longer a woman has breast implants, the higher the risk of it happening.

The latest report by the Australian Government chief medical officer Chris Baggoley says it is estimated 10-15 per cent of any brand of silicone breast implant will be ruptured at 10 years.

It also states that all silicone-gel fi lled breast implants are considered highrisk medical devices.

Dr Fleming puts the rupture rate at about 1 per cent per year, so by 10 years, about 10 per cent of implants will leak.

“It’s not dangerous to your health, but it does mean it will need replacing at some point,” he says.

an’s health has been questioned for several decades.

In the case of the PIP implants, the concern centred on the fact the manufacturer had not used an approved medical-grade silicone, but women with implants by other manufacturers have also complained of ill health, with symptoms including headaches, hair loss and fatigue.

Dr Fleming says extensive research to date has failed to prove silicone is responsible.

“These devices have been investigated more than any other devices,” he says. “If you look at evidence – rigorous studies done by reputable people over time – they all conclude the same thing.

“They conclude, yes, there are women who have cluster of symptoms who have had breast implants, but women with the symptoms were not more likely to be women who have breast implants.

“The symptoms occur with exactly the same incidence in all of groups (including those without implants).

“That has been shown over and over again and they’re the same symptoms that people attribute to amalgam fi llings and post traumatic stress disorder.

“It’s not a silicone symptom because if it was it would be more common in

women with silicone breast implants.”

Secondary surgery

PIP non-toxic

Every woman who has breast implants will need to have further surgery at some point.

The faulty breast implants at the centre of the global scare have been found to be non-toxic.

“This is not a lifetime device,” says Dr Fleming. “You musn’t go into it on that basis. You will need to do it (surgery) again.

The latest report from the UK’s National Health Service says the non-approved silicone used in the Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP) implants does not pose a signifi cant danger to the health of the women who have them.

“There’s no remove-by date, but expect to have it done again.”

Women shouldn’t be confused with lifetime guarantees offered by most manufacturers of the latest implants, as it doesn’t mean the implants last forever.

“Pretty much every company gives a lifetime guarantee,” says Dr Fleming.

“It means if you get a rupture they will provide you with a replacement implant.

“They’re unlikely to make any contribution to the replacement surgery fees.”

Secondary surgery is also more difficult and women are at greater risk of complications than after the initial surgery.

“(The UK) report confirms again that there is no scientific or medical rationale to advise patients to have their PIP implants removed as a precautionary measure,” says Dr Fleming. “In the absence of a rupture or other complication, there is no medical reason for removal or replacement surgery.

“There will be some women who remain concerned and uncomfortable about their implants and may still wish to have them removed or replaced. That is understandable and should be respected provided they’ve had the risks and complications of surgery explained to them.”

When you were out and needed to make a call, the good old pay phone was there for you. Remember scrambling together coins to keep the call going? In recent years, we’ve seen mobiles evolve from brick-like gadgets to smart phones that serve as your diary, contact book, camera and shopping list. Heck, you can do your banking.

The only downside with the phones of today is most people’s obsession with keeping them as their constant companion.

The latest technological advances have rendered many everyday items redundant. Lauren Paris takes us on a trip down memory lane

Portable CD players were once all the rage, even though they were bulkier than their cassette walkman predecessors. Now instead of carting around such a heavy item and a bunch of CDs, an iPod can fit snugly in your pocket. The mammoth internal memory allows storage of thousands of songs.

These days our wallets and purses are rarely bogged down with shrapnel as we have trusty credit and EFTPOS cards to help in times of need (anyone say shoe sale?). However, we still need wallets to accommod at e our everg row i n g collection of loyalty cards.

I think a break-up is in order.

If not permanently, then at least temporarily, because honestly, I don’t know that this relationship is good for me anymore.

I fear technology may be ruining my life and minute by minute, my body and mind are being slowly eroded, one cell at a time, by constant connectivity to the cyber world and less involvement with the real world.

I love to know what’s going on and once that meant reading half-adozen newspapers in the morning and getting on with the day, but now one post or story leads to another blog or page, and before I know it my mind is overloaded with other people’s lives while another day of my own has slipped by.

As far as technology goes, I’m pretty much behind the times anyway, so a break-up of sorts shouldn’t be too painful.

I have few FB friends by choice, the only computer in our household is my laptop, we have only one TV and no computer games or consoles, and I’ve never looked at Twitter because I’m old enough to remem-

ber the days when being a twit was not a good thing.

We have an iPod but its presence confuses me because we also have a great stereo system and lots of CDs although not enough time to listen to them, let alone a whole iTunes library as well.

In the past two months Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve bought Kindles for my sister and father and while my five-year-old tells me I need one because I like books, I think I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need one for exactly the same reason.

Ah, September heralds the start of spring and new beginnings.

The winter blues taper off, the air smells different, the flowers come out to play, girls get their fascinators and heels on and people are just generally happier.

Recently, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve contemplated getting an iPad, but I just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work out why we need one. I have an iPhone which does the same thing does it not? And I prefer the kids to learn to be patient when out and about rather than plugging them in to something.

In our next edition we put the spotlight on the new season with women in racing, trackside fashion, jam-packed pictorials, our regular columnists and plenty of inspirational and motivating reads.

I posed the question on FB (because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what we do now â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we seek permission from people we went to school with!): â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why do I need an iPad?â&#x20AC;?

Encouragingly, the fi rst two responses were that I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. Then there were others that went as far to say that it would change my life.

Chantelle JASON June 10, 2012 Chantelle Kerr and Jason Capelo fi rst crossed paths around seven years ago when Jason, a real estate agent, showed Chantelle through a potential property she was looking at buying.

Coincidently, about three months later, Chantelle ended up being offered a job at the same office as Jason.

sentimental favourite as it is where they enjoyed their fi rst holiday together. Their “non-traditional ceremony and reception” was held at Sheraton Mirage Resort & Spa, Gold Coast.

“It was total coincidence and fate. We developed a friendship for about 12 months, which then led to a secret office relationship,” Chantelle, a psychologist, says.

“After the ceremony we had a butterfly release while guests enjoyed chocolate dipped strawberries and champagne,” Chantelle said. “The reception was a cocktail style with a duo band.

While holidaying together in South Africa two years ago, Jason secretly bought a princess cut diamond, which he brought home and had designed into a ring to present to Chantelle during a surprise Valentine’s Day proposal over dinner in Sydney.

“As we had a wedding out of the area, it meant that we got to spend the entire three-day weekend partying and celebrating with our 75 guests. ”

The pair, who live in Wollongong, NSW, decided on a destination wedding on the Gold Coast – a
