Today we welcome Manukau United, who sit level with us on points (3), and like us, have lost a lot of keyplayersfrom2022.
Manukau have been demanding opposition for us for a number of seasons, most notably in 2017 when they narrowly pipped up for promotion to northern premier ranks And in the corresponding match here last April, Manukau won 1-0, to break up a Melville run of two wins beforehand and then sixwinsafterwards.
The good news for Melville is that there is every chance we will be back on Gower No 1 for our next home game, against Bay Olympic on April 29

In terms of facility development, plans to install new LED light son Gower 6 have been delayed The lights were shipped from Italy but ended up being sent via New Caledonia, Tahiti and the United States, making Customs curious and triggering forensicinquiries.
Congratulations to the Melville Premier Reserves on their first win of the season, 3-1 away over Manurewa. Skipper Thomas Cave potted two goals in the first seven minuteswhileMaxGurnickgotanotherbeforehalftime
A reminder that our women's first team begin their W-League campaign at home to Otumoetai on Gower 6 at 1pm on Sunday Growth and participation patterns can be unpredictable in women’s football, but in such a big year for the female code with the World Cup here, it is surprising that Melville and Waikato Unicol are the only Waikatobasedteamsinthisleague, withtheothersallcomingfromTaurangaorRotorua

We’re looking to bounce back after an Easter weekendthatwasn’tgreatforusintermsofresults.
We were missing a few senior lads in key positions which gave our younger players the opportunity to playtwomatchesinfourdays.
We also had debuts for Alec Bowden and George Brown, congratulationstoboth
Hamilton Wanderers in the derby on Good Friday was always going to be a tough game no matter what the form oftheteamsarecomingintoit
Unfortunately for us a few moments decided the game and their experience paid off forthem
Our clash with newly promoted Manurewa looks like a bad score line, but after conceding from an free kick early we had three big chances to equalise – including a oneonone–thatwedidn’ttake
We then gave away a penalty to give them a 2-0 lead at home, which allowed their confidence to grow and they took that momentum into the second half Again, we createdchancesbutcouldn’ttakethemandconcededsomesoftgoals
We are finding out more and more about each other and defining who we are, how we do things and how we react to tough results, but I can tell you we will keep fighting.
We are looking forward to this match with Manukau United with the Joma Cup up on thelinethankstoourfriendsatFootballUnlimited.

Otherwise there was little joy to be found in a 2-4 northern premier league derby loss toWanderersSportsClubonGower6.
Indeed, this was Wanderers first derby win since the 2020 farce at Porritt when they werethebeneficiariesoftherefereesnotknowingthepenaltyre-takerules.
It was a typically muscular Waikato derby in which ref Nick Waldron was blowing the whistle for the third successive such occasion, which may even be a record of sorts. And it was about par for the course that five Wanderers players were booked, while Melville team manager Danny Milner picked up a yellow and red card within 10 secondsofeachotherfordissentfromthebench
Melville’s demise can be put down due to some chaotic defending, particularly in a six minute spell early in the second half when, having just taken the lead for a second time, they then conceded three goals in just six minutes and the game was effectively over.
There had earlier been warning signs when Wanderers twice had the ball in the net onlyforMelvilletobesavedbythelinesman’sflag.
Melville’s good fortune was even more evident when Hayes took an inswinging rightfoot corner in the 18th minute and it found the net after hitting the inside of the far postwithaswarmoflimbsnearby

Then came the six minutes of madness, with Xavier Pratt scoring for Wanderers, followedbytwofromDerekTieku, includingawellstruckpenalty
Sub Dylan Williams almost gave Melville a late sniff when he steered the ball home from the edge of the area, but after a conference between ref and lino it was ruled outforoff-side.
As a general observation, Wanderers seemed stronger and more alert, while Melville struggledtokeeppossession.
Wanderers coach Joe Hinds was diplomaticin his aftermatch comments forwhat was his first derby win as coach, saying memories of the dual losses to Melville last year werestillvivid.
He said he had tried to play down the derby factor as much as possible before the match to take the pressure off his players and considered it his team’s best performanceoftheseasonsofar
“To twice come back and score four in a derby away from home is a good starting point for the season,” Hinds said “No doubt the next time we play it is going to be an absolutebattle.”

Melville were in trouble from the moment Connor Probert struck with a sweet free kick from distance, and for the second time over the weekend a penalty was conceded. A further goal in the first minute of the second half guaranteed the win for Manurewa, who went on to net twice more, including one in the 94th (a time when Melvillehaveprovedvulnerablesofarthisseason).
Melville were without both Aaron Scott and Liam Hayes, meaning captaincy for the daywenttoSeanLiddicoat.
Campbell Brown was the pick of the Melville players on a day when his teammates were generally well upstaged by their opponents. Ethan Richards worked hard, while George Brown came on for the injured John Oakman at the start of the second half andgaveareasonableaccountofhimself

It was Melville’s first loss to Manurewa since a 0-2 away loss on April 14 2012 and the biggest loss to them on record. However this was possibly Manurewa’s best team sincethedayswhentheircoachPaulMarshallwasplayingfortheminthemid-80s
