StorylinesMelville
The inaugural Melville Storylines celebrates the beauty of storytelling in all its forms, from writing and spoken word to film and digital news media. A fearless program of over 30 literary and creative events, Storylines explores the art, the science and the magic of crafting a good story.
Join renowned storytellers David Milroy and Lucky Oceans as they explore the idea of Stories in Song in an evening of personal stories and open conversation. Hear the stories of the land we live on, with Noongar Elder Aunty Marie Taylor at Dyoondalup Point Walter, and the fascinating history of The Coolbaroo Club with Noongar Elder Aunty Roma Loo. Take a look Behind Closed
Doors with a viewing of the vintage radios and communication objects at Wireless Hill, guided by the museum storytellers.
The program also includes workshops and panel sessions for budding writers, with opportunities to meet established authors and artists. It looks at the way storytelling has changed in the digital age, and how the stories we tell can make us who we are. How does a book get written and published? What is that part of us that falls under the spell of fake news? How does your own story shape your identity?
A literary festival for everyone, Melville Storylines is an invitation to discover that we all have a story to tell.
For the full Melville Storylines program and to purchase tickets, visit melvillecity.com.au/melvillestorylines
On the weekends we washed our manes soaking up that vitamin D. The intimacy, the ritual of drying our thick black locks considered pretty unorthodox for our neighbours as they tried to get a glimpse through the crack in the fence. We’d fight for the title of ‘Longest Hair in Leeming’ as we hopped into the Tarago for another weekly ritual synonymous with the Khalsa parivaar… fruit picking.
An excerpt from Pardēs, a new work by Sukhjit Kaur Khalsa, poet and spoken word performance artist commissioned for Melville Storylines.
IT STARTS AS JUST A LITTLE TASTE AND TRYING SOMETHING NEW, BUT IT CAN LEAD TO BIG THINGS. THERE’S A LOT OF JOY IN THAT.
IT’S FOSTERING THAT LITTLE GEM OF CREATIVITY OR WONDER, AND SHOWING IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO EXPLORE AND LEARN.

Explore the story of the city as homeowners across Melville open their doors to Melville | Contemporary Architecture and Sound Sessions.
Each session invites guests to look at home design through a different lens, with a tour of one of the city’s architectural gems. Revealing iconic post-modern designs to contemporary builds that challenge accepted norms of space and connectivity, the sessions explore how our homes reflect the values of their time and how these values are well worth preserving.
Hosted by the home’s owners, each session includes a discussion by a design expert – often the original architect –offering insights into the ways design can help us respond to the contemporary challenges of a growing population and a changing climate. Guests are invited to stay for a live music performance and refreshments to complete this fascinating afternoon of design and discovery.

Cold War to Dance Floor
Cold War to Dance Floor follows the evolution of electronic music, from the laser-lit raves of the 90s all the way back to its origins in Cold War military technology.
Featuring a series of hands-on interactive exhibits and sound labs, the exhibition explores a little-known side of electronic music, in the beautiful surrounds of Yagan Mia Wireless Hill.
The old engine room of WA’s most significant wireless station will play host to the ‘engine room’ of the dance floor; the synths and drum machines that first exploded on the scene in the 1970s and 80s, propelling dancers across the world to stay up all night. Audiences will be taken on a fascinating journey of militarised science and technology that eventually caused a pop culture explosion in music, art and entertainment. Join us to celebrate the opening night with a live synth show, DJ and bar and your first chance to have a go on some of the vintage synths on display.

MuchLEARNING more than books
LEARNING IS ABOUT TRYING NEW THINGS, AND LIBRARIES DO THAT REALLY WELL. WE’RE TEACHING PEOPLE TO SEND EMAILS, OR TO PAINT WATERCOLOURS, OR TO DELIVER POETRY AT A LIVE EVENT. MOST EVENTS ARE FREE, AND THEY REALLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS AND CHALLENGE YOURSELF.
Singing and storytelling. Art workshops. Nursery rhymes in Mandarin and Noongar. Book launches. Philosophical debates and panel discussions. Movies and poetry recitals. There’s a lot more than books at your local library.
This spring and summer, the city’s libraries are alive with a series of events and community programs that celebrate the changing role of libraries in our lives. Far more than a place to browse the bookshelves, libraries are centres of learning, creativity and community.
WILDLIFE CAMERAS
What goes on in your backyard at night? Melville Libraries’ wildlife cameras open up the secret world that goes on all around us, every night. Available to borrow from your local library, the cameras offer a rare glimpse into the lives of the nocturnal native animals who share our homes and gardens. Run in collaboration with Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre (PLEEC), the program helps identify and protect the native wildlife in the city.
MAKING NOISE
Our libraries are places where stories are told and ideas are exchanged, and it’s often far from quiet.
Melville’s bi-monthly library events program includes authorin-conversation talks, Music @ the Library, Reconciliation in Conversation, Sustainability and Art for Adults, along with feature events like book launches, panels and guest speakers.
From tinkering on an Edison robot with your children, to mastering a language, to making a coil basket, there’s always something to do at the library.
You could even read a book.

SEVEN WHEREWITHAL WAY
An exciting read this year was Samantha Ellen Bound’s Seven Wherewithal Way. This book featured enough magic and adventure to capture a young person’s imagination to join the characters on a fun filled quest. My next highly anticipated release is Maria Tureaud’s spooky debut novel The Last Hope in Hopetown.
Charlie, Library Team Leader
LET’S WILDFLOWERSCOUNT
I have been enjoying some vibrant Australian picture books which make me want to head outdoors. The board book, Let’s Count Wildflowers by Perth-based Tracey Gibbs is a wonderful way to share spring with your baby. The bold colours of Hilary Bell’s picture book, Summer Time, have me longing for days at the beach.
Jo-Anne, (YoungDevelopmentCollectionLibrarianPeople)
EXILES
After seeing the movie some time ago, I finally got around to reading Australian author Jane Harper’s awardwinning bestseller The Dry recently. It was an absolutely riveting read which didn’t disappoint! I now can’t wait to read Harper’s latest offering in the outback noir genre, Exiles, as well as continuing with my favourite author Fredrik Backman’s poignant novels, including his latest release, The Winners

Mystery f i C tion EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY HAS KILLED SOMEONE
The intriguing title, Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson pulled me in and blew me away. I loved every minute of this witty and brilliantly clever mystery. I can’t wait to get my hands on Richard Osmand’s The Bullet That Missed and Anthony Horowitz’s The Twist of a Knife.
Samantha, Library Customer Experience Officer
HORSE
My favourite authors keep on giving – Geraldine Brooks with her story Horse about an American champion called Lexington and the young, enslaved boy who loved and protected him was beautifully written as always; now I’m looking forward to Alex Miller’s A Brief Affair and Diana Reid’s Seeing Other People
Christy, DevelopmentCollectionLibrarian
DINNER WITH THE SCHNABELS
A real stand-out book this year was Toni Jordan’s Dinner with the Schnabels – a humorous and heartrending look at an Australian family in a post-pandemic world. I’m looking forward to reading Maggie O’Farrell’s The Marriage Portrait, which is set in Renaissance Italy and inspired by Robert Browning’s poem My Last Duchess Emily, Librarian
ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE
I’ve been reading the captivating and beautifully written Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. An incredible yet realistic YA (Young Adult) coming-of-age story about finding yourself. It has me excited to read The Boy from the Mish by Gary Lonesborough next.
Amy, Library Customer Experience Officer
POWER PLAY
Power Play by Tim Higgins is an eye-opening account of the hurdles jumped by Elon Musk to build the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle. Bringing Tesla to market was a fifteen-year struggle in the face of opposition from rivals, investors, and whistle-blowers. My next read is Cadre Country – How China became the Chinese Communist Party.

Art in the heart of Melville
Melville’s visual art program is a celebration of art, showcasing work by Western Australian artists at all stages of their careers across the city’s galleries, museums and studios. From personal explorations of identity to prestigious awards, experience the power of art: beautiful, moving, pleasurable and challenging – sometimes all at once.
ART AWARDS AND PRIZES
Melville showcases diverse and ambitious new art in a spectacular series of prizes and awards. The Melville Art Awards return for their 46th year at Wireless Hill Museum, with entries from hobbyists to established professionals. The second biennial Digital Art Prize engages Australia’s best digital artists in a celebration of art that lives on the screen. Goolugatup Heathcote will also host the 2023 Melville Contemporary art prize, a rare opportunity to come and see the work of Western Australia’s best contemporary artists across a wide range of practices, styles and formats.
TILT
My dad told me the other day they call him ‘the Mayor of Duncraig Road’. He doesn’t have any vestments. Just a crumpled outdoorsy sun hat, khaki greens, and in recent years, a set of lurid electric blue arm covers that protect his thinning skin from the sun. When I say ‘they’, I refer to the clients whose lawns, gardens and pathways he has carefully maintained for some 25 years. My dad is a gardener. eMM a b us W ell
TILT, Goolugatup Heathcote’s annual invitational exhibition, challenges artists to respond to the site itself. This year, artist Emma Buswell explores Applecross as a place where different lived experiences of class come together in a way that’s not always comfortable. Incorporating a range of mediums, Buswell’s work explores the different experiences of the people who live in Applecross’s wealthy streets, and the others – like her dad –who work there maintaining their mansions and gardens.
CREATIVE RESIDENCY AT HICKEY STREET
The Hickey Street Creative Residency Program is a hub of creativity in the heart of the city. Located in two cottages at the bottom of Yagan Mia Wireless Hill Park, it offers artists temporary accommodation and studio space in this unique historic precinct. A precious space dedicated to art and artists, it gives them the time and space to ideate, develop their practice, take inspiration from the surroundings or create a new body of work.
WEEKENDER ART SHOWS
Weekender Art Shows allow local artists to manage a gallery space on their own terms. A fantastic place to buy art for the home, it’s a unique opportunity to view and purchase work outside the traditional gallery scene.
PUBLIC ART
Melville is home to over one hundred pieces of permanent and temporary public art. At any time that suits, you can explore an array of diverse sculptural and mural works right across the city. Keep an eye on the Canning Bridge precinct this summer as five new works get installed in soon to be revealed locations.

Buswell
Emma Buswell is fascinated by the changes in the land as she walks through the suburbs from East Fremantle to Goolugatup Heathcote.
“The suburb shifts and changes as you get closer to Duncraig Road. The way the land is used and maintained changes. I’ve been collecting the litter and debris on the roadside – mostly smashed car headlights and broken glass. But that all stops around the Goolugatup Heathcote area, where i’m guessing people can afford to employ private landscaping and cleaning services. You see lots of service vehicles for cleaning and gardening businesses around there.”
This difference is at the heart of Buswell’s exhibition for this year’s TILT program. It also has very personal significance for the artist – Buswell’s father is one of the many people employed to maintain the area’s tidy streets and gardens.
“Growing up, I used to accompany my Dad to work a lot. He was a gardener who maintained a lot of the wealthy properties in the area. My understanding of that area comes from that experience of Dad as a worker coming in from a very different lived experience, which was just on the other side of the highway.”
Buswell sees greater significance in the work, beyond its response to the Goolugatup Heathcote site. “For this show, I’m imagining the present moment viewed from a distant future. How will future societies look back on us as a Western colonial society and how we use land, who has access to that land, and who is allowed to thrive?”
TILT will open at Goolugatup Heathcote on Friday 11 November at 6pm and will run until 29 January 2023.
I THINK, LIKE MANY OTHER ARTISTS, ART FOR ME IS A COMPULSION; YOU DON’T HAVE A CHOICE OF WHETHER YOU DO IT OR NOT – YOU JUST NEED TO. IT’S SOMETHING I’VE ALWAYS NEEDED TO VOCALISE MY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS.

ARTTICKETEDBOX
A box of creativity delivered to your door every school holidays. To find out more, go melvillecity.com.au/artstuffto
Those first 50 Art Boxes – filled with activities designed by local artists and creatives – sold out almost immediately.
“The idea behind ART BOX is to introduce children and families to the breadth of creative practice – to show that art can be from and about anything. The activities are fun and interesting and often a bit weird,” says Hewitt.
One year on, 50 boxes have become 250, and ART BOX is now part of a suite of three art programs for children. ART CLUB
runs after school for eight weeks each term, while ART SCHOOL is a series of workshops that take place each school holidays. Like ART BOX, both new programs are facilitated by professional artists, who design activities based on their own practice.
“The opportunity to work with practising artists is what makes it so incredible,” says Hewitt. “Children are getting to see what it’s like working with high-calibre artists like Tarryn Gill and Bruno Booth. It really helps them explore what art is and what it can be, and to learn about their own creativity.”
The popularity of the programs in their first year is a mark of their success, says Hewitt. “It’s fantastic to hear how much families have loved the programs. I’ve had parents tell me it had completely changed the way their child engaged with art and creativity.”
MY SON RECEIVED HIS ART BOX THIS WEEK....WOW!! THIS IS TRULY AMAZING. I’M BLOWN AWAY BY WHAT YOU HAVE PUT TOGETHER. HE HAS JUST LOVED GETTING THE BOX OUT AND CREATING NEW THINGS EACH DAY. I HAVE ALSO SEEN HIS INTEREST TO CREATE OTHER ART PIECES REALLY SPARK UP TOO. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Melville Parent
When she started ART BOX, Creative Learning Producer Emma Hewitt hoped the project would give children a unique way to explore art and creativity over the school holidays.

This year we’re expanding on our children’s program with bilingual rhyme time sessions and fun, inclusive cultural activities across the city.
Local Noongar woman Rickeeta Walley gives an introduction to Noongar language with Koolangka Waangkiny, Noongar language storytime. Each dual-language storytelling session includes simple Noongar songs and stories – either traditional or contemporary – along with a fun creative activity. Chinese language baby rhyme time introduces children to the culture and language of China, with familiar rhymes and songs in both English and Mandarin.
Children can learn about the local history of Yagan Mia Wireless Hill, with Museum Learning Programs for students in Years 2 and 3. Available for groups of up to 50 students, these exciting programs teach children about the geography and many-layered stories of this unique site.
