The Primary Update Grade 2 — Grade 5 June 13th, 2013 WELCOME PAGE This Wednesday saw five of our Grade four and Five students compete in a new event called Battle of the Brains. This general knowledge quiz took place at Safa school and saw our JBS team compete against Safa Primary; Jebel Ali Primary; Horizon; Repton,; JESS Jumeira; Emirates International; JESS Arabian Ranches and DESC. Our JBS Warriors who represented us for this battle included Alia Julfar, Shantanu Das, Azaan Wazir, Mark Murimiri and Ahmed Khemira. On the way to the battle there was quite a lot of nervous energy from the team who did not know what to expect, but were nevertheless eager and up for the challenge. Alia Julfar, the team spokesperson, explained that she “thoroughly enjoyed the competition and thought it

was a great experience. It was quite scary, but at the same time was very fun and also interesting. I loved working together with my team mates.” The first five teams were drawn out of a hat to decide who would go first and JBS Warriors were secretly pleased that they weren’t up first as it gave them an advantage of working out what to expect in the rounds and also strategise as a team by working out the other teams’ tactics! But their turn soon came round and I am so pleased to say how proud I was watching them confidently stride up to the stage, take their position and commence forth with the battle. What followed was a swift three rounds of multiple choice questions that tested the student’s knowledge on Science, Geography, Sport and general knowledge. JBS warriors put in a stupendous effort and I was very proud of all five as they sailed through the questions, some of which tested my knowledge too! Before they knew it their three rounds were up and it was time for a break to allow the points to be totaled. As they strode off stage, it was clear to see that they were nervous, but also pleased with how they battled against the other teams, but it was a tense ten minutes awaiting the results. After a quick debrief of their performance and that of the other teams the host, Ritu Puri, announced in no particular order the four teams who had made it into the final round. As good a battle that JBS Warriors put in we didn’t quite make it into the final. The Warriors accepted this defeat very graciously, with one of them even saying the other four teams had battled well to get that far.

It has now given them a taste for such events and we look forward to collaborating in future events with Ritu Puri of Starting Point Dubai, who organized this wonderful event. By now, the class teachers may have been in touch with your class representative, to share with you the end of year party arrangements. These parties will take place on the final day in the morning. As always, we encourage healthy party food and please remember no pork and no nuts. Each year the teachers always express their concern about the sheer amount of food left over. So, a little plea with regards to quantity, if you could keep it to what is requested this would really help with keeping wasted amounts down. Thank you. The teachers are in the final stages of finalising your child’s end of year report. These will be distributed on Tuesday 25th June. However, in order to receive this report please do ensure that you have returned all school resources, such as library books, reading scheme books and any fines for missing items have been paid. For those families who are leaving school early, we regret that we will be unable to provide you with the report until this date. A soft copy of your child’s report will be emailed to you from the admissions team. However, if you wish for somebody else to collect a hard copy of the report on your behalf this needs to be communicated in writing or through email and brought to my attention so that the necessary arrangements can be made. Alternatively, the report will be available to you upon your return in September. As we draw nearer to the end of this school year, it really is noticeable how much the children have physically grown, which has brought my attention to our school uniform. Our uniform will remain the same for the forthcoming academic year. However, to avoid that back to school rush at the end of August/ September, we do encourage you to visit one of the ZAKs uniform stores to order and purchase the uniform well in advance. However, your child’s school uniform may well still be in good condition and so you will be pleased to hear that ZAKs offer free alteration service for garments under two years old. So, should you wish to have dresses, shirts or trousers let out or made bigger, these garments have actually been designed with this in mind. All ZAKs ask is that you give them plenty of time to make the necessary alterations. So make your way to one of their stores to avoid the last minute rush. We will be making one amendment to our uniform and that is to the school hat. We have decided to opt for the legionnaire style hat, which is designed with a neck drape to protect the back of the head and neck when exposed to the sun. A much needed feature for this environment. Please follow this link to locate your nearest store http://www.zaksstore.com/contact.htm The Grade four &Grade Five production, School Daze, will be performed next Monday 17th June at 6pm. Door open at 5:30pm, so make sure you arrive early to secure a seat for what is going to be an entertaining and comical show! Wishing you a relaxing weekend Miss Williams

FRENCH AT JBS

Bienvenue au Café des grade 5 The highlight of this week was the role-plays that our grade 5 students performed on the theme of “ordering food at the café. For the occasion, the children and Madame Valérie had brought real food items that you can order at a French café: “des sandwichs au fromage, des gâteaux, des petits pains au chocolat, des croissants, du jus de fruits, ect…”. The French room was then transformed into a French restaurant, and the children were ordering food in French. Some students were the 'garçons' and the 'serveuses' and they were taking their responsibilities very seriously. These were the comments we could hear from the students at the end of the lesson: “C'était vraiment délicieux! On reviendra certainement!”

GRADE 2

The Cheetahs performing. In literacy, Grade 2 have been writing their own play scripts. They have continued play scripts from The Dragon Slayer—a book the read earlier in the year. Grade 2 Cheetahs performed out their scenes to the rest of the class. Grade 2 Tigers performed their scenes to the Lions and the Cheetahs. We enjoyed the performances very much.

The Lions enjoying their pool party!

GRADE 3 Grade 3 had a fantastic Science day this year! We had 8 stations set up in the Eagles and Falcons classrooms and it took us an entire day to complete all 8. We were dressed as crazy scientists, wearing wigs, glasses and lab coats! Throughout the 8 stations we exploded volcanoes, designed clothing for different climates, insulated liquids to trap the temperature in and measured temperature changes using the scientific apparatus. Our teachers even showed us a cool TV show called Brainiac.

GRADE 4 & 5 Grades 4 & 5 have their production next week and they have managed to fit rehearsals around studies and assessments. The students have worked hard to perfect their parts and song routines.
