With the current state of how things are, when it comes to land and spaces we’ve seen businesses dissapear and others f lourish.

W hy d o s o m e s t ay a n d o t h e r s d i s a p p e a r ?

Over the past year I’ve witnessed this cycle i n my h o m e t ow n a n d i n n e a r by c i t i e s .

T o e x p l o r e t h i s c u r i o s i t y, I v i s t e d l o c a t i o n s t h a t h ave s t o o d t h e t e s t o f t i m e .

I then compared the past with the present.

W e n o w r e l a t e t o p u b l i c s p a c e s i n a n u n p r e c e d e n t e d w a y.

I fo u n d t h a t t h e r e i s a l o s t i n n o c e n c e , a l o s s o f m e m o r y, a n d d i s p l a c e m e n t .

Through the histor y of these places and essentially c r e a t i n g a n ew a r ch i ve fo r f u t u r e ge n e r a t i o n s , w h a t r e m a i n s i s a r e t e n t i o n o f m e m o r y.

It’s an amusing comparison to see how t h e s e l o c a t i o n s h ave f u n c t i o n e d over the years.

Coral Springs Covered Bridge

city of Coral Springs The first bridge to exist in the in Florida. Built in and the oldest covered bridge y. It was also used as 1964 as the entrence of the cit te the future style a sales technique to demonstra e built over the bridge of the city. The barn structur nes of the Old South. was painted red to convey sce gs was nicknamed A During this time, Coral Sprin city in the country.

Miami Marine Stadium

Built in 1963 in Key Biscane, Fl for the public to enjoy performances, water sporting eventts, rallies, and concerts.

It hosted thousands of events till Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992 damaging the structure of the stadium, but the structure was declared safe.

The city decided to close public access and managment from the City of Miami left the structure to deteriorate.

In 2008 the vice president of The University of Miami and The Natural Trust for Historical Preservation came together to form the Friends of Miami Marine Stadiumwhich now owns the property. They have raised millions of dollars to renovate the structure to serve it’s original purpose. Meanwhile it has become the home of local graffiti artist who have brought lots of press and relevancy to the structure.

Crandon Park Zoo

Opened in the 1940s and was in business until the 1980s. The zoo was located right on the beach which is part of the reason why it shut down. In 1965 Hurrican Betsy endagered the lives of the animals at the zoo. Future storms and hurricanes also made it difficult to maintain the animal population. After the Metrozoo opened up in the 80’s, the zoo closed. The old habitats and cages still remain but have renovated.

Certain sites have been cut off from public access and there are signs stating “Future home of Crandon Park Zoo”.

Coral Gables Bunker

An observation bunker built during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was constructed in the early 1960’s as part of Operation Mongoose, a covert operation run by the CIA. This bunker was used as an observation center to warn the two missile sites near by of any incoming attacks. In 1968 an archeoligist named Robert Carr uncovered the bunker but said by the time he got there, all the radio equipment and technology were removed. The area turned into a local hangout spot in the 70’s and is now standing in a reserve. The city had plans on making the reserve more public friendly and wanted to turn it into a park but those plans fell through due to funding.
