Projects to improve City Parks’ Usability, Safety fixtures in David Brewer Park and replaced them with street lights leftover from the Delaware Streetscape Project. Staff refurbished the light fixtures and had them installed along the walkway. Electricity was connected to the existing flag pole so that it can be lit 24 hours a day. A sidewalk was also installed from the interior walkway north to the playground. The new sidewalk provides access from the interior of the park and shelter area to the playground.

Trail Head Marker Boxes Over the winter, Parks Department staff constructed nine cedar trail head marker boxes. They were placed at various locations to indicate route distance and connectivity of the trails. Patrons can find these trail marker boxes at entrances to City trails, walkways, and pathways, including the 10th Avenue Park/Five-Mile Creek Trail, Sportsfield, Havens Park, Landing Park, Three-Mile Creek Trail/Haymarket Square, and 20th Street Walkway. New Storage Building Parks Department staff constructed a new storage building in Riverfront Park at the Campground Manager’s site. The building will provide the Campground Manager

with a storage area for supplies necessary for campground operation and grounds maintenance. This is a continuation of ongoing improvements to the Riverfront Park Campground, which includes a new shower house facility, paved camper pads, new electric pedestals in the campground, a renovated picnic shelter and gatehouse building for campground patron registration. Traffic flow has also been improved in the park, with the drive from the entrance to around the center island marked as “one way.” This allows for better traffic flow and easier boat trailer parking. David Brewer Park Lights In 2012, the Parks Department removed the old, missing or damaged walkway light

Cody Park Concession/Restroom Facility The park’s restroom facility is scheduled to be remodeled, including a new roof and guttering, new skylights, all new bathroom fixtures, new concession area cabinets and sink, new concession counter tops and new paint. Electrical provisions will be upgraded to accommodate heating. R.L. Phillips received the low bid of $61,975 for this project.

David Brewer Park Restroom/Storage Coming this spring, a new building at Brewer Park will serve as restrooms and a storage facility, scheduled for construction this spring. There will be handicappedaccessible stalls for each gender. The facility will also include a storage area on the south side. This will allow for parks items and tennis tournament supplies to be available on site. The facility also includes a canopy area on the west side that can be rented for events. R.L. Phillips received the low bid of $144,850 for this project. It is funded through Capital Improvement Funds.

Donations also may be made for park improvements. City staff will provide guidance and some materials for projects. Choose a park, decide which activities you will be able to do and how often. Legacy Tree Program Commemorate a special person or event with a living legacy. For a $200 fee, a tree will be planted and a plaque erected at the planting site. Request forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Office. Emerald Ash Borer The Emerald Ash Borer is threatening Ash trees across the country. The beetle has been detected in Wyandotte County, Kansas, and Clay and Platte counties in Missouri. To prevent the accidental spread of the Emerald Ash Borer, wood products from those counties are quarantined. The Emerald Ash Borer is a small (1/2 inch) metallic green beetle native to Asia and attacks only ash trees. Tens of millions of ash trees in forest, rural and urban areas have already been killed or are infested by this pest. Infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer is thought to be from inadvertently transporting firewood, unprocessed logs and infested ash nursery stock. For information about signs, symptoms, and treatments, as well as information regarding ash trees, visit www.emeraldashborer.info or call your Kansas EAB hotline at 785-862-2180. Flotation Devices for Handicapped Persons Only

The City of Leavenworth has adopted this policy due to safety concerns. Many people do not realize that even an approved flotation device may not always keep a child afloat in a face-up position. Also, some children become so dependent on the flotation device that this dependency interferes with the development of their personal swimming skills. Flotation devices are not meant to be a substitute for adult supervision. The best way to keep a child safe in the water is for the parent to have their “hands on” the child.
