Unit 1 Review Today we are going to look back and review some of what we have learned! Please click through for reminders and links to reinforce & practice your skills!

Integer operations:

*For +/ – : Change subtraction to addition. Same sign = keep that sign Different sign = take sign of larger

*For ×/ ÷: Same sign = Positive & Different signs = Negative Ex) 5 – (-8) = ____ Final answer  13

**Change this to 5 + 8

Ex) (-2)(-7) = ___ **Same sign = positive Final answer  14

Combining like terms: *Remember the variables need to be EXACTLY the same to combine them Ex) 4x + 3x2 – x + 5 = ____

**only the 4x & the –x are like terms here

Final answer  3x + 3x2 + 5

Distribution: *Remember we are MULTIPLYING by the number outside the parenthesis Ex) 5(2x – 7) = ____

**We multiply the 2x & the –7 by the 5.

Final answer  10x – 35

Order of operations (aka PEMDAS): *Parenthesis first, then Exponents, the Multiply/Divide, and last Add/Subtract Ex) 4(-2 + 1)2 – 9 = ____

**In the parenthesis is -1. This number squared is 1.** Multiply by 4 gives us 4 and subtract 9 to get -5. Final answer ďƒ -5

Exponent Rules: *If you are MULTIPLYING exponents with the same base, ADD exponents. *If you are DIVIDING exponents with the same base, SUBTRACT exponents. *If an exponent is raised to ANOTHER exponent, MULTIPLY exponents. *Anything to the ZERO POWER is equal to 1. *If you have a Negative EXPONENT, it will FLIP position.

Ex) (x4)(x3) = ____ Final answer  x7

**Add the exponents

Ex) x9/x3 = ___ Final answer  x6

**Subtract exponents

Ex) (x4)3 = ____ Final answer  x12

**Multiply exponents

Ex) 7x0 = ___ Final answer  7

**Anything to the zero power = 1

Ex) 5/(x-3) = ___ Final answer  5x3

**Anything with a negative exponent “flips”
