Letter from the Editor Well, I can't believe it, a whole year has passed since the very 1st issue of Inspiration Vintage magazine premiered in June of 2013, and here we are, all set to publish our 3rd. Three may not seem like a lot, but as the editor and creative director, it is quite a big deal. It takes months of planning, hard work and dedication to complete a publication and without the wonderful contributor's whom I have been honored to work with, this magazine would never have been possible. I'm not sure what's in store for Inspiration Vintage Magazine within the next year, but I have truly enjoyed the creative process and the wonderful response that we have gotten from amazing readers like you. So thank you to everyone who have purchased our magazine digitally and in print, we appreciate you more than you know! I hope that you enjoy the 3rd issue, we have some incredible new contributor's in this issue and a favorite that has been with us in all 3 issues, Kate from Salvage Dior. Kate has been our resident DIY expert over the past year. She has an incredible eye for transforming unwanted items into works of art that tell a story of beauty and history. Penny Viney is a garden and beach lover who lives in
Melbourne, Australia and has an inclination to collect anything that catches her eye, especially items with character and history. That includes large and small bottles, things made of wire, items that are rusty or weathered and handicrafts when traveling. She also loves to gather shells and other flotsam and jetsam. "I suppose you would assign the tag 'eclectic' to my interior style, which is always a work in progress!" Penny works as a travel consultant and has two adult children and a lovely old whippet.
Penny has an amazing eye for finding wonderfully weathered and rusty pieces to display around her home. emember that old commercial showing a stressed out woman saying “Calgon take me away!”? Then it showed her sinking into a nice warm bath with a content smile on her face. I think that lady had the right idea. Don’t we all have days where we need a little respite? Life is so busy, it seems we are always being pulled into many different directions. It would be great if whenever one was feeling stressed or overwhelmed we could run off to the spa for a day of pampering. Unfortunately, we are not always that lucky to have the time to spare within our busy lives. That’s why I think we need to find a little corner in our own homes and turn it into a private retreat. Even if it’s just a little corner of your closet where you can eat a Snicker’s bar in peace. I stumbled onto my special retreat. I am a wife and mother of two boys, so being surrounded by menfolk means our home can get really loud and rowdy. One day when my boys were taking up all the room on our family room sofa deeply involved in some activity, I was looking for a quiet place to relax and read. Just when I was about to give up, it finally occurred to me that I could go read in our living room. The living room in our home has always been one of those rooms that is rarely ever used. It just sits there looking pretty, but no one sits in the room and it serves no function. Every now and then it had become a sort of studio that I used to write my blog, "Fern Creek Cottage". There is a white couch and everything else in the room is neutral, so I can change the look of the room whenever I want with colorful pillows and accessories. If Valentine’s day is coming up I may add pop's of pink and hearts to the room. In the summer I can give the room a beachy look using blue sea glass and a bowl filled with shells. You get the idea. So, back to the day I sneaked away to read in the living room. I found I loved hanging out in there! It was quiet and feminine and smelled nice and yet I was still close to my family in case they really needed me. Now I find myself really making the room my own. There is no overhead lighting, so I added a floor lamp so I can read in the evenings. I also brought in a throw in case I get chilly and lots of comfy pillows, which are definitely a must! So when my boys are busy playing video games or watching a testosterone filled super hero movie; I just tip toe away to mommies special place. I usually have a book in one hand and a cookie in the other. Sigh....my own little retreat. I highly recommend it! •

I am many things, a wife, a mom, a business owner, a magazine publisher, and someone who is truly passionate about my vintage home. My home is a reflection of everything that I am passionate about and I try and always stick to my instincts about the pieces that I display in my home. If a piece doesn’t excite me or set my heart beating a bit faster, then it doesn’t come home with me. It took me years to really figure out what I loved. When I first started shopping the flea markets, I would browse for hours trying to find that one perfect item, most of the time going home empty handed or with things I didn’t really love. Today, I move through the flea markets quickly and only stop when something speaks to me and my style. I am extremely picky when it comes to what I bring home these days.do. Because I know my style so well, it’s easy for me to mix pieces that I find at antique shops and flea markets with those that come from as far away as Europe to combine the perfect farmhouse style.

Living
with vintage, faded, & worn...
Eventually though, some things once loved may fade in my heart, so these pieces end up in my shop so that others can enjoy what I have over the years. I love to share with others that have the same passion for vintage that I do. Creating a home with all the things that I treasure makes it all the more comforting to come home to. •

Fabulous Junk •
One woman’s love for “good junk” makes for a charming & eclectic vintage home.
Spring and summer is my favorite time of year! Just as Mother Nature is
awakening from a dormant, quiet season of rest and emerging with a colorful purpose, I feel that my home needs to ‘bloom’ as well! I usually favor a neutral color palette, but this time of the year is the perfect time to add some subtle hints of color. Muted greens, pinks, blues, and yellows find their way into my accessories and collections. I’ve always adored the time-worn appeal of vintage treasures. To me they have so much more character than anything shiny and new.

My mom and I own a shop where we sell re-purposed home goods, so we’re always on the hunt. It’s so thrilling to find something special and then be able to pass it on to others who will appreciate it! Decorating in a fun vintage style doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, either! If you’re willing to hunt and sometimes dig a little, you can usually find great vintage pieces for a great deal. This is a wonderful time of year to score vintage goods at flea markets and even garage sales! Year round venues that we like to frequent include thrift stores, antique shops and Etsy. I’m particularly attracted to things that I call ‘good junk.’ Anything chippy, rusted, weathered and worn gets my heart beating faster! It seems like when I find one item that I’m drawn to, suddenly I’ll find several more, and a collection is born! Over the years I’ve gathered vintage suitcases, alarm clocks, seltzer bottles, grain sacks, and ironstone, to name a few of my favorites! When you shop this way, taking your time, you get a thoughtful, collected look that boasts your own special style. Be open to using mundane objects in unconventional ways. For example, I have an old pair of large pruning scissors hung on the wall along side a vintage whisk broom, inside a chippy empty picture frame. It’s quirky and unexpected, but eye catching! By displaying items in this way, you add character to your space and make it uniquely yours! Take advantage of this wonderful season to freshen up your home whether it’s adding some color, starting a new collection, or simply changing some things around to give a new perspective! One
look at the unwanted and discarded and I see the horizon of a beautiful destiny. I could not have dreamed of a more perfect way to reclaim, restore and renew the beauty that surrounds us. Each piece of worn wood or salvage from the curbside takes me to the endless anticipation of what could be. How did I find this rare treasure right in front of me? Am I so blessed that no one has claimed you before me? How many have passed you by in search of some form of greatness that they are still searching for?

I know my words may sound poetic, but truly our homes tell the story of our hearts and the journey of one’s soul. When we fall in love with a painting or something that was given to us, it holds that part of us captive. Recently when I found an abundance of reclaimed wood, I decided to use it to add warmth and rusticity to my small kitchen. Each plank I chose is special and I love how no two are the same. The texture and depth they create in the heart of my home gives everyone a sense of happiness when we are gathered together.
Even an old cable spool I found became an extra table and a large size clock to hang on the wall. Most of the items in my home are reclaimed and transformed with just a few dollars spent on supplies. I can’t imagine decorating any other way, for this is my passion to create beauty from the heap.

habby French and “Shabby Chic” are my absolute favorite home decor styles. Because of my deep passion for both styles, my home has become the perfect blend of beautiful vintage accessories from France and wonderfully worn shabby-style furnishings in soft pastel hues. I have always heard people say that by the time you reach your 40’s, your style becomes well-defined. I didn’t quite understand this then, but I certainly do now. Over the years, during my teens and up through my early twenties, I dabbled in many different decor styles, never committing to just one certain “look”. It never felt right. But by the time I reached my late thirties, I began to realize more and more what my true style was. After years of dark earth-tones and mismatched style that never really reflected my true passion, I can now honestly say that I love my home. It’s finally me!

As much as I love decorating my home, I also find great pleasure in gardening. Throughout our lush gardens, most of the plants and flowers, including my favorites, Peonies and David Austin Roses, I have planted myself. However, I can’t take all of the credit, my sweet and talented husband designed our entire back patio area which we use frequently in the warmer months for entertaining family and friends. Our gardens are always a work in progress, but I have such fun adding more beauty each year. I’m striving for a Cottage garden feel with vintage garden accessories, chippy tables, and comfy chairs placed amidst the flowers to relax upon, but to get it just right, it will definitely take some time. I feel so fortunate to be able to create this beautiful home for my family. My husband and my two beautiful girls are what I live for. They are my ultimate joy. •
Shanon’s fabulous outdoor space is like a secret garden full of her favorite things; including vintage French accessories, shabby-chippy tables, and worn comfy chairs, all of which mingle amidst the beautifully vibrant flowers and lush green trees and shrubs.

Both of my boys have been
antiquing and attending flea markets with me since they were babies. They get just as excited as I do when it comes to finding a special vintage piece from the flea, so it’s only natural that their room is full of wonderfully worn treasures from here and there. There is nothing pretentious about my boy’s room. I wanted it to be a place that they would feel comfortable in, a space that they could jump and play; not an area that they would have to worry about ruining. I filled there space with old wooden cabinets, comfy pillows made from vintage fabrics such as sturdy grain sacks, large antique baskets, old worn suitcases, and vintage pictures. They also have a fabulous vintage black iron bed from the 1930’s that I scored on sale at one of my favorite antiques store years ago. It really makes a wonderful statement in their room.

I love using pieces for things other than their intended purpose; such as old suitcases for toys and coloring books and an old store display cabinet for video games. I also have a couple of worn and chippy tool trugs that we use for art supplies and an easy catch-all for small toys. The handles on the tool trug make it the perfect piece to carry from one room to another. It’s always fun to use vintage pieces for unexpected things. Living with vintage throughout my home was a natural decision, especially when it came to my boy’s room. It’s easy to care for, adds interest and texture to a room, and the best part is the hunt for each special piece. For me and my boys, it’s a fun past-time that began when they were little and will hopefully be something that we can enjoy together for many years to come.

Fresh and simple ingredients come together to create a delicious summer sandwich bursting with loads of flavor.

Chicken Pesto Sandwich
Ingredients
2 cups shredded chicken breast ¼ cup Greek yogurt Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1 baguette, cut into 3-4 equal pieces, toasted for serving 2 cups arugula, for serving 2 Roma tomatoes, thinly slices, for serving 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced
For the basil pesto
¾ cup fresh basil leaves 2 cloves garlic, peeled 3 tablespoons pine nuts ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/3 cup olive oil
Instructions
To make the pesto, combine basil, garlic, pine nuts and Parmesan in the bowl of a food processor, season with salt and pepper, to taste. With the motor running, add olive oil in a slow stream until emulsified; set aside. In a large bowl combine the chicken, ½ cup pesto, Greek yogurt and salt and pepper, to taste. Serve sandwiches on baguettes with arugula, tomatoes, mozzarella and chicken pesto mixture.
