Springfield Baptist Church hosts acoustic music for 2020 show

By Kenny Rowe This year, I will again be orchestrating musical performances in Springfield Baptist Church during the annual show in September.

Would you like to participate? Do you have a group, or just love to sing or play? If so, we would love to have you participate in the program. Just drop in or schedule a time to share some great gospel music. Keeping with the theme of Field Day of the Past.

We will have no electric instruments or microphones. I have had the pleasure of hosting the church the last two seasons. My wife and I also have shared in music for their Christmas gatherings. A few years earlier I gave away around 2,000 CD's of songs I have written to people attending the weekend event. You may hear my songs by visiting my Facebook page - Will I See You In Heaven. You may download my music and give any love offering you wish to my Paypal account. I will have CD's available for the weekend as well. I would love the opportunity to visit and share in song at your events and am available for various times. God Bless!

As in all things, COVID -19 has affected our ability to seek a new home.

Meetings have had to be rescheduled and we have all been restricted on activities. Plans are ongoing, however. We have devised a business plan and have been in discussions with people from several locales who are interested in seeing Field Day of the Past maintained and moved. We will keep you posted.

Things have been different this year. There can be no question about that.

Despite the stay at home restrictions and taking extra health precautions, we are still busy. Busy doesn’t mean getting things done on the show grounds, however. Just like everyone else, our schedule has gotten off kilter and many of the chores we tackle this time of year have had to go undone. Don’t tell anyone, but the inside Christmas decorations are still up on the field. Santa’s chair is sitting just where he left it in the Educational Building and the Christmas tree, although,

undecorated is still standing in the church.

The weeds are encroaching around the office and any flowers that have appeared have done so voluntarily.

Also, no tobacco, cotton or vegetables have been planted. Even if we wanted to plant vegetables, they are hard to come by this year. Seems everyone has time to take an interest in small home gardens.

Of course, due to COVID -19, the Spring Thing Family Fun Fest had to be cancelled. We are hoping that things will open enough that people can come out and enjoy “A Taste of Summer” on June

6 and 7. Everyone needs a taste of some good ole fair food, even if it has to be gotten drive through, a fundamental word in our vocabulary these days.

At Field Day, we are working toward the 2020 show year. Our participants have already committed and lots of arts and crafts vendors are looking forward to the 29th annual show. Some of our commercial sponsors have already committed to this

year as well.

Working at home has presented its own challenges and some of us have had to take on new responsibilities.

Elfie, who joined us as Executive Administrator last year has a new job. She can be found sitting on top of a huge box of toilet paper. It’s her job to guard it.

Guard duty is wearing thin, however, and she’s ready to get back to work.

Wally Ready for 2020!

Remember Wally Wallow? Wally showed up early last Spring and started hanging around with the Field Day volunteers working on the show grounds. He enjoyed the company so much he decided he would stick around and help out with the show. Last year Wally spent much of his time travelling with volunteers to locations around the state, and he even took a fishing trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina with members of the Dixies Four Wheel Drive Club. He attended the Abilene Blowout at Keystone Tractor and Truck Museum, took a vacation at the lake in Louisa, entertained kids during the annual Evergreen Elementary School first grade school field trip to the show grounds, took in several local fairs and

even participated in the Goochland County Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. He took part in the parade during the Chesterfield County Fair last August and, Boy Howdy, he had a great time there.

Wally had such a good time serving as ambassador for Field Day of the Past 2019 that he has decided to stick around for this last year at our Rockville location. He is ready to Rock it in Rockville. Wally went so far to swap out his fiddle for a new rock and roll guitar.

Painted a bright, candy apple red and sporting some sparking stars, Wally is ready to rock and roll it for 2020.

Unfortunately, due to the circumstances under which we are all operating because of the coro-

na virus, Wally’s visitations to other locales will be severely restricted this year.

We hope that, as the summer progresses, this virus will release its hold on the American population and Wally will be able to resume his schedule of visits to fairs and other public events.

If he cannot travel this year, Wally will be on hand for the 29th annual Field Day of the Past set for Sept. 18, 19 and 20. He extends a special invitation to all his friends to be sure to be present for this last event in Rockville.

The show this year will be a commemorative event which looks back on the many programs and activities which made Field Day of the Past one of the premier events in Eastern Virginia

Participants getting up for 29th Field Day of the Past dith Leake has promised to bring some antique equipment related to apple cider making. Jim Bordwine, the saltmaker, Jim Callear and his World War II Navy Recruiting Station, the Travelin’ Woodwright Tom Tucker, John Bielik’s paper marbling demonstrations, Gerald Castleburg, the Circuit Rider will all be on hand.

Harley Doughtery will again be creating whimsical creatures with his chain saw and Buffalo

Will and Pawnee Bill will again be singing and playing.

The Show-Me Swine Racers will race for the gold (really it’s cookies) and Cole Shows will be geared up tfor those who want to enjoy the carnival rides and all of that carnival food.

Lots of Arts and Crafts vendors have already applied for their space for 2020, eager to make up for lost time selling their wares in the spring.

This year, 2020, has been a hard one on many of us for any number of reasons. Maybe a lack of entertainment pales in comparison to the loss of jobs, or worst yet, loved ones; the inability to celebrate weddings, proms, graduation and family events; the lack of face-toface communication with our friends have all taken

If you ask any visitor to Field Day of the Past just why they attend, you never know just what the answer will be. For those in their twenties and thirties, the answer is usually the Truck Pulls. For children, the animals and the carnival are usually the biggest draws.

Women tend to prefer Arts and Crafts while the men are more inclined to gravitate to the Tractor Pulls. Horse enthusiasts can be found in the Equestrian Field, history buffs love the Heritage Area and those who are more mechanically oriented wander over to the engines — large or small, it makes no difference.

For those who are locals to the show, particularly those who have grown up in the Short Pump/ Goochland area, the Short Pump Grocery, Short Pump Garage or Springfield Baptist Church attract their attention. The music which takes place on the Sound Stage and in Springfield Church draw their own special followers. Last year one of the biggest draws was Dr. Jim Lavender’s storytelling

sessions. Each performance played to a fully crowd.

Antique construction equipment has its followers as do antique vehicles and tractors.

It quickly becomes obvious that there is no single attraction, activity or event which defines Field Day of the Past. Instead, it’s the experience of all these things mixed in together and presented in a unique venue over the three day weekend.

It’s true that each day also brings its unique crowd. More senior citizens visit our show on Friday when the crowds are not quite as large as they are on Saturday and Sunday. Friday night, crowds begin to show up at the gate around 4 p.m. for the Truck Pulls. Of course, Saturday brings hoards through the gate early to watch the Tractor Pulls during the day and then for the Truck Pull again that evening.

Families, particularly those with young children, even those in strollers prefer to attend on Sunday. Sunday afternoon is also when many church

goers come out for a few hours.

The lesson here is Field Day of the Past has something for everyone — young , old, city slicker or country lover, female, male — everyone can find something in which to be interested.

For that reason, Field Day of the Past 2020 will be bringing all of these attractions back together for one grand finale on the show grounds at Rockville. After this year, we will move on. In the meantime, we invite you to come back and celebrate our commemorative year. Call your old friends for a homecoming. Round up the neighbors for a get together and gather up the family to spend some quality time.

This year you will find your favorite attractions returning. Dr. Lavender will return with a new storytelling program and he tells us the talent will be even better than last year.

Come drive through and pickup some of that fair food you have been craving and missing. Just come to the showgrounds, drive through Gate F (near the sawmill) on Rt. 622, drive by T.J.’s booth, place your order and soon you will be enjoying Funnel Cakes, Fried Oreos, Kettle Korn, Corn Dogs and Lemonade. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. A portion of the proceeds will go to Field Day of the Past’s moving efforts, so come out and support us!

Field Day of the Past search for new home continues It has been a rough year for everyone. The corona virus has changed all of our lives and we have come to understand that life post-COVID-19 will be a lot different from what it was at the beginning of this year.

Amid all of the confusion on what’s happened, is happening, or what’s can and will happen, Field Day of the Past finds itself in the unenviable position of trying to find a new site for 2021. Meetings have had to be postponed as officials with whom we have been talking have had more important decisions to make and matters to tend to. Nonetheless, we are persevering. We have spoken with representations is several counties who have expressed an interest in having Field Day of the Past become a

viable force in their communities. Although, progress is slow, we are still pursuing these options.

We have devised a business plan which lays out the benefits Field Day of the Past has to offer, what the move entails — moving and maintaining our large collections, and what is needed to make the move.

We have also set up a couple of GoFundMe accounts to enable our supporters to provide whatever financial support they can. The Give-10! Campaign is increasing, thanks to the many donations we have received. In addition, we have also received many donations through the mail. We thank each of you who has donated. Every dollar helps, every person counts. If you would like to donate, you can do

Field Day of the Past has been an integral part of the Rockville community for 29 years and we look back on them with great fondness. We have made a lot of friends in this location, have enjoyed working with other county nonprofits and are proud that we have been able to donation $1,000,00 to other non-

First graders from Evergreen Elementary School in Chesterfield County, enjoyed the garage during the 2018 field trip. School field trips were only one aspect of Field Day of the Past’s many educational offerings, a part of our program we hope to expand in a new location.

Construction began on the log cabin during the show.

Not finished that year, construction resumed during the 1997 show year. The cabin originally set across from the sawmill complex but was later moved to its current location in the Heritage Area.

Jesse, owned by Lyle and Phyllis Kelly was a familiar sight at the show for several years. Jesse, who showed up for the small engine exhibits, demonstrated how horse power was not the only way to run things. In some cases, dog power was even better.

Steam traction engines pulled the large tram until crowds grew too large to make the engines practical.

Marvin Gardner, with his wife Beverly, made an appearance at one show with their Rust and Flame mobile blacksmithing shop. The Gardners found a longer gig closer to home and could not return.

Field Day of the Past is a family tradition for many At the 1994 show, which was a two-day event in October, Dennis Gammon and his niece Gail Gammon Brooks could be see consulting about what was going on at Field Day of the Past.

Seeing family members together volunteering during the show is not unusual. The Gammon family is a typical example. Over the years Gail has served as bookkeeper, secretary, worked on the Field Day of the Past newspaper and chaired the Arts & Crafts Committee. In the past few years, she and her husband, Jeff, who cut the grass on the grounds waaaay back, volunteer for corn grinding and wheat threshing demonstrations.

saw the operation of the Short Pump Grocery Store in the early years. He has made sorghum molasses, worked in Grasberger’s Spoon Factory and made broom handles for the show. Dennis has also been the “go to” person for electrical, plumbing and mechanical problems.

In the off season, Dennis can be found with other volunteers constructing building, originating new exhibits, working in the cotton and tobacco field and other jobs that just need doing.

The Gammon family involvement with the show doesn’t end there.

Dennis’s daughter Denise works the Souvenir Shop during the show and also designs new exhibits and displays throughout the years. She also maintains the Field Day inventory.

Denise’s husband, Steven Hubbard designed and maintained the Field Day of the Past website.

Dennis’ brother , Jerry Gammon, also volunteers during show day and his late brothers, Russell and Robert Gammon also volunteered. A large collection of antique tractors lined the show grounds during the 2007 Field Day of the Past event. Ten years later, the grist mill pictured at the right was featured as part of small engine exhibit for the annual event. You will notice Joe Fidd, chairman of the Small Engine Committee in the backgrounds.

Vintage tractors, antique small engines such as the grist mill, putt putt engines, and similar exhibits are all on display by our exhibitors who bring their treasures to the event to show them off every year.

Reprinted from Spring, 2019 It’s hard to believe that in a quiet spot in Central Virginia known as Pea Ridge in Goochland County, exists one of the most extensive collections of tobacco memorabilia in the state of Virginia.

Howard Mayo has spent many years collecting this vast assortment of tobacco related artifacts, and there are thousands of them — sitting on shelves, resting in display cases, standing alongside the walls, hanging from the rafters — scattered throughHoward Mayo’s tobacco museum in Goochland County, recalls the days when tobacco was Virginia’s cash crop and mainstay of the economy. In a 2004 inter-

view with the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Mayo said, “Anything related to tobacco, I’ve got. I’d say this is all a part of history.”

Mayo’s collection traces a goodly portion of the tobacco industry in Virginia. It includes cigarette machines, banners, signs, packs of unsmoked cigarettes, tin containers from Mayo Tobacco Co., and even Kawliga, a wooden Indian.

In September, 2008, Mayo and his son, Steve, agreed to pack up some of these pieces of history and bring them out to Field Day of the Past to share with show goers.

Mayo’s relocated “museum’ was in an old tobacco barn which Joe Liesfeld had relocated to the grounds in 2007.

Tobacco barns were once common sights scattered across the landscape of rural Virginia.

Now that growing to-

bacco and the production of tobacco related products is a dying industry in Virginia, Field Day is thankful to people like Howard Mayo who have preserved an important part of our history.

Editor’s Note: Howard and Steve Mayo arranged pieces from Howard’s museum in the Tobacco Barn for almost ten years.

In 2018, the pair was unable to attend because of health issues. The barn contained artifacts from Field Day’s collection of tobacco related items. Tobacco leaves, grown on the grounds and harvested by volunteers can be seen hanging from the rafters.

Other tobacco related history and tools, advertising and other items are on display in the Educational Building, The Tobacco Barn and the display in the Educational Building can be visited in September for the 2020 event.

In 2007 Field Day of the Past volunteers worked to save Springfield Baptist Church from the wrecking ball. In 2020, the church again faces destruction. As our lease ends, funds are needed to secure a new home for the show, move existing structures and collections and construct new buildings to house artifacts. Our resources will be quickly depleted. Field Day of the Past is undertaking a massive fundraising effort to accomplish these tasks. Sunday Classes A 29-year-old tradition, the Field Day of the Past Tractor Pulls will again take place on Saturday and Sunday during the annual event in September. The tractor pulls were established as part of the Field Day program back in 1992, when the first show took place in October. These pulls have been popular events every year since, and the number of pullers had increased over the years.

The two days of pulling

action encompasses several classes — everything from antique stock, running both days, to Hot Farm Stock, also included in the lineup on both days.

For those who wish to come and watch, the tractor pulls are scheduled to commence at 9 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday. Pulls will continue throughout both days.

For those who wish to participate, a list of the scheduled classes is adjacent. If you have any

The Truck Pulls will start at 7 p.m. on Friday night and will resume at 6 p.m. on Saturday night.

This year the Woodwright Shop

The late Earl Carwile was the Field Day of the Past woodwright for many years.

Earl Carwile, who was Field Day of the Past’s original woodwright, wrote a column From the Woodwright’s Shop for every issue of the newspaper until his death. Earl’s article reminisced about the old ways, talked about what he planned to do in the Woodwright Shop each year, (sometimes “planned” was the operative word) and generally talked about life.

This article appeared in the Fall 2004 edition of the Field Day of the Past newspaper. It’s Earl version of how to make your own wooden hay fork.

Something we all need!

Recently I have had some people ask me how to make a wooden hay fork. First you need an oak log (red or white) with straight grain and free of knots or weak spots. Next you need to split out a blank1¼ inch thick by 3¼ inch wide, 66 inches long.

Cut the blank out as shown in the adjacent diagram.

Bending comes next. I usually cut the tree and split out the blank the

If the blank dries out, finish cutting it out and place it in a steam box until it is flexible enough to bend without splitting or cracking.

Put the fork in the ending frame and leave it for at least three weeks so the bends will set.

Due to COVID-19 Field Day of the Past monthly membership meetings have been cancelled until such a time as it is safe for us to all get back together. This makes it difficult to plan for the 2020 show, but we all do what we can. Hopefully we will be able to resume as close as possible to normal activities by this summer.

Normally, monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at Springfield Baptist Church on the show grounds at 7 p.m.

Volunteers are the heartbeat of Field Day of the Past Field Day of the Past volunteers are who make our world go round. Without them, most of the activities, improvements, changes and day to day operations on the show grounds would not happen. These people not only dedicate three (long) days of their lives during the annual event, but some spend time on the field on a weekly basis throughout our months of preparation before the show and after the gates close in September. These are the people who make sure the equipment is all operational, the grounds are attractive, the buildings are cleaned out, the displays are in order, the gates are manned…...and there’s sufficient toilet paper in the bathrooms, which seems to be a truly essential product these days. Be sure to thanks the volunteers you encounter.

Caboose relocated in 2007 Reprinted from the .

Spring, 2009 Field Day of the Past newspaper Early in the Spring of 2008, Field Day volunteers gathered one Saturday morning to relocate an old caboose to the show grounds.

Constructed in the early part of the 20th century, the RF&P caboose had seen better days. Her once bright red color had faded to a dull finish and the wooden boards on her sides had begun to rot away. The platforms on each end were in sad shape; the beam supporting one end was deteriorated.

As a reminder of a different era, however, the caboose was worth saving and so the volunteers rigged up some wheels to transport the car on, and

hooked it to the back of a tow truck.

Although volunteers had made motions of making repairs on the caboose before last year’s show, in the end, it was all talk and no action. Things are changing now, however. A work crew has been plugging along through the bad days of winter, working when weather permitted, and now some of the structural repairs have been made and the paint bought.

There was quite a discussion on just what color a caboose should be painted, and once we decided red, the question was “Just what red is truly red?”

Caboose red, or course.

Unfortunately, none of the paint manufacturers make Caboose Red paint, so we decided on Real Red.

Close enough, right?

Editor’s Note: The caboose was painted Real Red and repairs were finished in time for the 2009 show. The 1920’s caboose was donated to Field Day of the Past by the Rennolds family of Richmond, VA in 2007. It was moved to the grounds with the help of Billy Woodson of Capital Garage in Richmond. The RF&P caboose was coupled to the forward end of the Mt. Foraker, our Pullman Sleeper/Observation passenger car. The caboose was attached here for practical purposes and limited space. Cabooses were never attached to passenger cars, only to the rear of freight trains.

Inside, the caboose houses a museum of rail-

road memorabilia. It is now part of the Pullman car tour during the show days and is manned by members of the Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society A fork lift maneuvered the caboose into position at the front of the Pullman car.

By Wayne Davis The Eastern Shore breeze, what there was of it, makes its feeble stirrings, pushing the July heat into whirlpools that dance among the tombstones like restless spirits.

This is where Willie is buried, but I’m a half hour away from meeting him.

I am sitting in my 1978 Ford van eating my lunch in the quietest place I could find.

This is an old graveyard.

Some inscriptions date back to the late 1700s. The monuments reflect an era when you could still put up as ornate a stone as you could afford.

In the center of the grave sites sets a huge mausoleum, the four corners capped with spread winged eagles. To my right is a 15-foot tall stone tree trunk with a stone

Behind me, a concrete dog stands guard over his master’s grave, while a marble angel spreads its cloak over his wife.

This is a well kept place.

Clusters of flowers dot various graves, a trail of colorful exclamation points leading away from my windshield.

Neat squares are bordered by low marble and concrete walls — the resting place for entire families. Even though there are hundreds of stones within these squares, they are precisely laid out, each in its own place as if, even in the hereafter, families wanted to be together in the greater family of mankind.

I suppose that’s why the one lone gravestone stood out.

It was way over to my left in a far corner, 30 or 40 yards from any other grave.

A tree stood nearby, its shade offering the only company. No marble angels here, just a plain stone with a plain message: Willie ...

1949-1969 Killed in Action In Vietnam No flower, not even dried up ones. Just weeds and a stone, the bottom of which was covered n a lighter layer of dirt, splashed up by the rains of a lot of lonely yesterdays.

Someone had, a long time ago, placed a small American flag at the foot of his grave site, but the staff had broken, and the tiny flag had lain in the dirt. Its stars, half bright,

the red, white and blue stripes had all faded to near white.

I stood at the foot of the grave listening to the wind stir the leaves above me, thinking about Vietnam, a war in which I had prayed my own son would never have to become involved.

Vietnam … even now, decades later, the name still tugs at the wispy cobwebs of guilt and pride that hide in the attic of the mind.

And when they came home from fighting, no one staged parades for them. Hell, no one, not even me, shook their hands. Only when they came home in a box, like Willie had, was attention paid to them, and even then, only briefly.

I reached down and took

your flag, Willie. Got it off your grave and brushed the dirt off it and rolled it carefully in my hand.

I took your flag. But, I’ll bring it back. Back to the grave stuck off in the corner under a tree. And when I go to the Vietnam Memorial, I’ll look for your name.

I owe you, Willie, and so I took your flag. And some folks won’t understand. But I know you do, Willie. I know you do.

A large part of the success of Field Day of the Past is the many sponsors who step forward to support our efforts. Many of our sponsors have been players in the event since the beginning — back in 1992. Others have come forward over the years and, for the most part, most return year after year, We applaud their efforts on our behalf.

Field Day sponsors are able to take advantage of the large number of visitors to our show and their many different interests. Field Day attracts approximately 45,000 individuals through the gates during the threeday show. On Fridays, senior citizens, school groups and those who are fortunate enough to have the days off come to be entertained and educated by the various operating displays. By 4:00 p.m., the crowds shift and the younger generation and hard core truck pull enthusiasts flock through the gates in hordes. This younger, more energetic crowd is looking for the noise, action and excitement the pulls provide. Saturday morning brings a new wave of show goers, — an eclectic mix of young, elderly, children, grandmas and granddads, engine enthusiasts, those looking to enjoy the carnival rides and games, rodeo fans, and lawn mower pull crowds. They come to see the tractor pulls, the 4-H Livestock Shows, the demonstrations in the heritage area — and the plethora of other sights to be seen. The truck pull crowds reappear in the evening.

On Sunday, families towing strollers and young children, visitors who are back for another day of fun and

those who have just had a free day come to see what all the excitement is about.

There are many opportunities for companies to showcase their businesses. Sponsorships are available at every financial level, so if you are thinking your budget won’t accommodate our offers, you will be surprised. Michael and Sharon Sandlofer’s Great American Frontier Show appealed to crowds during the 2010 and 2011 Field Day of the Past. It included The Animals that Built America and The Wolves of America shows. Featuring a variety of entertainment including an ole western saloon and events such as Roman riding, the Frontier Show was one of our most popular and well attended attractions in recent years.

Native American exhibits, including dancing, added another dimension to Field Day’s programs for the 1996 show.

This mobile calliope roamed the grounds for the show for several years. Although unique, its music could get old after a few hours.

Above, lions and tigers, and bears, Oh My! Discovery United Methodist Church, Richmond, VA, offered an exhibit of exotic animals during the 1994.

During the same show, Field Day of the Past’s programs included a series of mule pulls for the crowd’s entertainment.

The show was a twoday event, still in October at that time and the Equestrian Field and Antique Construction Equipment didn’t exist.

Donnie Hardaway operated one of his antique washing machines in the Small Engine Exhibit area for the 1993 show. Back then, small engines were located near the Barnyard, then know as the Petting Zoo.

Ticket prices change for 2020 Field Day event

VHS Rodeo Returns to Field Day in 2020 The Virginia High School Rodeo will return to Field Day of the Past 2020. After a two-year hiatus, these young competitors will be back with more enthusiasm than ever. The Virginia High School Rodeo contestants will be riding for points in several competitions on Saturday and Sunday during the show in September.

The 2020 show season will see a change in ticket prices. Gate prices will be $15 on Friday and Sunday and $20 on Saturday. Two -Day tickets will be $22 and Three-Day passes will cost $38. Each of these passes will be good for any one show day.

Two-Day and ThreeDay passes will only be available online this year.

They will not be sold at the gates. Online tickets will be available by May 1.

Block tickets will be $100 for ten tickets, each of which is good for any one show day. Block tickets will be available in late July and can be obtained by mailing $100 for each block of ten tickets. Allow enough time for us to process your check and mail the tickets back to you.

Block tickets will go off sale at noon on Thursday, Sept. 17. Block tickets cannot be held in Will Call at the show.

The cost of arts and crafts spaces will remain at the same level as they have for many years. For complete information on arts and crafts spaces, please refer to the 2020 Arts & Crafts Application on page 41.

For commercial and corporate sponsors, the price of these spaces will also remain the same. The first, last and only skid steer rodeo was conducted as part of Field Day of the Past construction equipment displays by James River Equipment.

Hurricane Isabel dumped hundreds of gallons of water on the East Coast and Field Day was left to consider hosting boat races instead of the usual activities for the annual event.

Safety tips for summer and our September Field Day event

By John Meola Safety Coordinator Hello to all! We hope everyone is well during these trying times and looking forward to summer. We are planning for our upcoming September Field Day event and wanted to share some safety tips and reminders.

Judging from recent years, we are probably looking at a hot summer, with an active hurricane season. The Corona virus adds another layer of stress with all the associated health precautions. Our showgrounds are equipped with sanitary facilities including soap and hand washing stations. Good personal hygiene practices have pretty much become the accepted norm for all of us, and we are doing our part to offer a safe and sanitary show environment for families and exhibitors.

Our showgrounds are generally spacious enough to allow for keeping a safe distance to others, in accordance with generally prescribed health advice.

Please be mindful of your ‘personal space’ and that of others, in all situations, including when visiting the show.

Some of the tips and reminders we want to share include Whenever possible stay protected from direct sunlight. Bring a sun hat or umbrella or other form of covering. Everyone has a different tolerance for

heat, and we can lessen the effects of high temperatures by using a hat and staying covered up. Sun screen is also recommended, especially for children and persons with sensitive skin.

Proper hydration is more than just drinking water. Diet plays a big role in how we tolerate and adjust to high heat.

Mother Nature tells us this basically with her summer crop of high moisture bearing fruits and vegetables. Watermelons, squash, tomatoes, corn, and a host of other summer crops offer the advantage of nutrition and high moisture fiber that is more gradually and fully absorbed into the body.

This gradual assimilation helps build up a core reserve of moisture in the body over several days or weeks. Proper hydration is also important for the body’s natural defense mechanisms to function best.

Walking is one of the best exercises for all persons, and because our showgrounds cover many acres, there will be a pretty fair amount of hiking involved to see the show.

We recommend wearing appropriate footwear such as sturdy shoes, athletic or hiking boots. Wearing flip -flops, soft shoes or other poorly supported footwear is not advisable. Most of the showgrounds are unpaved, grassy or gravel surfaces. Please select the most appropriate footwear for prolonged walking and standing.

We offer handicapped assistance from the parking lots to the entry gates and throughout the showgrounds. We have peoplemovers and trams, and staff assisted buggies to help with just about any

needs for viewing the show. We do not permit personal conveyances such as buggies or carts, but we do provide handicapped parking and transport.

Please use caution around all moving vehicles, such as the peoplemovers, tram cars, staff operated vehicle and tractors, etc. Watch your step getting on and off the tram cars. Use the handrails on any steps or changes in elevation, including into and out of buildings and exhibits.

Respect the space around large animals.

Do not walk or stand directly behind a horse. At noon on each day of the show there is the National Anthem followed by a bit of noise-making and whistle blowing. This can startle an animal, so please give them ample clearance.

If you or anyone in your group needs medications, make sure to bring them with you, in the event your visit lasts longer than planned. We have a First Aid tent set up and medical response staff is on the field as well, just in case.

If there are young children in your group, please make sure they are closely supervised and that you account for them. We recommend taking their picture on a cell phone on the day of the show, as well as pinning a note on them with a parent’s name and cell phone number. We will not announce a ‘lost child’ on the public address system and all gates and law enforcement will be advised of a missing child.

Our show is on private property. No weaponry or firearm ‘open carry’ is permitted. No alcohol or illegal substances or im-

paired persons.

Goochland and Virginia State Police are on-site to patrol the event.

Backpacks, coolers and other containers are subject to exam on entry.

In the event of inclement weather or other emergency, we will announce a ‘shelter-in-place’ advisory. Please return to your vehicle and remain in it until the emergency is over. Please do not try drive out, since this will create Animals are fun to watch and be around, but, large a traffic problem. or small, they can bite, kick or spit if agitated.
