"Lingerie made to be seen." - Victoria Secret

What is the brand: Features its celebrated Angels and world-famous fashion where their famous lingerie is showcased Brand Appeal: Bold colors, glamorous, iconic, sassy, and empowering Who: Victoria's Secret is the leading specialty retailer of women’s lingerie, prestige fragrance, body care, accessories, swimwear, athletic apparel, and loungewear.

What: Victoria's Secret got its start in 1977 by American businessman Roy Raymond, who wanted both men and women to be comfortable shopping for lingerie at a high-end store.

Where: As of May 2020, there are more than 1,070 Victoria’s Secret stores that are easily accessible to their female catered audience Why: These intimates make every woman feel special as the retail experience reflects the same feeling. There is a sort of fantasy created during the annual fashion shows this brand holds, yet it's made attainable when the apparel the models are wearing hits the floor of all their stores.

ROY RAYMOND CHOSE THE NAME VICTORIA BECAUSE HE THOUGHT IT GAVE THE STORE SOME RESPECTABILITY. THE “SECRET” PART OF THE NAME REFERRED TO THE MERCHANDISE SOLD WITHIN THE STORE. STILL THE LARGEST RETAILER OF LINGERIE IN THE U.S. L BRANDS PLANS TO CLOSE 250 VICTORIA’S SECRET STORES, A 25% REDUCTION OF ALL LOCATIONS DUE TO THE PANDEMIC IN 2020.

The Victoria Secret store in Long Beach, California will encapsulate their branding through marble floors, bold wallpaper, and a balance between hot pink and black accents.

This location will make use of the outdoor scenery in displaying their products.

The lighting fixtures, décor, and music strategies promote a feeling of feminine luxury.

Black, white, and pink are used to establish a brand identity and bring users into a dramatic setting where lingerie is celebrated.

1. "I feel fine with that. As someone who works alongside middle school and high school girls, I see the negative effects of the pressure girls feel to look a certain way."

2. "It may give off the vibes of over-sexualizing the products to feel more like red-light district than a body-positive place."

4. "It would help sales but I still wouldn’t go in unless my wife needs a birthday present."

5. "All depends on what VC wants as the main aspect of their brand. Are you sex clothes? Then put that in the front of the store."

1. "Would love it 100%!!! I feel like the angels are just one body type, which makes me feel like I can’t be confident in my own skin because I don’t look like them, and I think it’s important to show that every woman can be confident no matter their shape and size. Plus I think it would attract a larger audience to the store."

2. "Flashing lights make me dizzy, but I would appreciate it if the store had brighter lighting."

3. "I like that idea of switching it up at night but not super drastic because it can confuse the customer."

4. "I think adding a glimpse of PINK and the makeup section would be more inviting and less intimidating. Also, I think men would appreciate it more because most of the time I walk by the store/ am in the store, the guys are always in the front waiting for their significant other."

5. "Love this strategy because I would feel more comfortable shopping knowing that the whole mall is not looking at me shopping for undergarments" 6. "Yes, when I think of Victoria’s Secret, I automatically think of pink, black, and white."

7. "I want to get out of the store ASAP. The majority of the time, I feel uncomfortable. I think if the space/ environment of the store was brighter, I would feel more welcomed. " 8. "It could be improved. I think that their lighting is darker, and it makes me feel a bit claustrophobic and uncomfortable. I think if the lighting was brighter, it would make the space look bigger and appealing."

Yes, they’re the same colors, but the way they use them at PINK makes it more appealing and welcoming. I don’t like that it feels small and cluttered."

"As a woman, I prefer AERIE because they have more inclusive marketing. Their models are of various sizes, colors, ethnicities, and have models with disabilities, which I think is a community that is constantly left out. I love that they’re being included because they’re humans too and shouldn’t be hidden from the world. I also think their floor plan, colors, and lighting arrangements make the experience more pleasing and welcome you in. I think Victoria’s Secret could improve in those aspects of propaganda and how they arrange their space."

INSIGHTS Hearing feedback from a range of ages and frequent VS shoppers to having never step foot in the store, it's interesting to hear everyone's different outlooks and opinions.

The male representation has less interest in the store and isn't as attentive to details in the store as the woman are.

The use of any flashing lights would not be beneficial in universal design so a solution like colored LED strip lights would work better for the nightlife idea.

One surveyor mentioned makeup outside may not be the best idea but a solution I discovered was to incorporate mirrored stations with built-in lighting to get the ideal lighting for trying on makeup. This strategy could also be used in the outdoor environment at night.

Female users still have a sense of discomfort at this retailer so rethinking the layout and design solutions can help assist them in having a more relaxed shopping experience where they have fun shopping for intimates.

Goals and Design Strategies: This user is on a mission to find what products that best suit and uplift her. The backlighting used on the wall displays as well as the sconces in the dressing room will best light these products so they are most flattering.

Products arranged on the table surface also allow them to browse for items they gravitate towards with drawers below to find their correct sizing. These areas rest under halolike chandeliars reminding them they should feel like angels in whatever they're wearing.

USERS: A MOTHER SHOPPING WITH HER DAUGHTER

Goals and Design Strategies: A mother wants whats best for her daughter so she is willing to spend as much time needed in this space to ensure her daughter gets what she needs. This is why the seating area by the dressing room was designed with this user in mind, where mothers can patiently wait on their daughters to ensure what they try on is something they love.

The notions area behind the register is a place this user will be drawn to as she pays for her daughter and possibly wants to treat her to an additional gift. There are a variety of products displayed here she could purchase for additional family and friends.

USERS: THE MAN SHOPPING FOR HIS SIGNIFCANT OTHER Goals and Design Strategies: This user will also make use of the seating, especially if he's waiting for his significant other to try on items or shop the store floor without him. Insights: Hierarchy in where products are placed Lingerie (what the brand is known for) is placed at the front of the store and can be seen from the street view PINK has a large section in the back deck for events to occur at night and to help aid to the youthful feeling it's known for The fragrances are also placed at the front of the store by the register for users to experience upon checkout for any last-minute purchase. The scents this section creates also pairs well placed by the lingerie and uplifts the senses users are experiencing. Since it's an open-plan the apparel section is also adjacent to the dressing rooms, so any user in these areas can experience the sweet smells.

The office and breakroom are placed at the end of the store because this is not an area users will have access to and it needs to be more private and out of sight since it doesn't aid to the user experience.

FURNITURE PLAN Insights: There isn't a lot of furniture required since it's a smaller floorplan Custom product displays are placed on the walls and floors The register and product storage are interconnected so employees have direct access to products when they need to be restocked Circular makeup stands outside rotate so the most products can be placed and experienced, yet this idea still saves space since its on a smaller section on the deck The umbrella with circular seating is an area users can try on makeup and test the product PINK has a small seating area for users to engage in conversations this space would be used for any events held at night

When approaching the store on the street and upon entry, viewers experience the grandness of the branded VS logo that's pink glass is illuminated to showcase the presence of this store in Long Beach and highlights the notions section within the store. Gold, grand chandeliers will hover over important merchandise, highlighting what this brand is all about: feminine luxury. The halo shape the repeated circles in this chandelier create the VS vision that all their customers are angels.

LED strip lights along the back of wall displays backlight key inventory capturing all the detailing and elevating the feeling of richness. A sense of drama is created through coved ceilings highlighting product displays.
