Fun Facts Hedgehogs can be found all over the world. They are very interesting little creatures.

• Hedgehogs are nocturnal. This means they come out at night to hunt for bugs and to find plants, then they sleep through the day.

• Hedgehogs rely on their long snouts and strong sense of smell to hunt, as they can’t see very well.

• Different hedgehogs are native to parts of Africa, Europe and Asia. They were introduced to New Zealand in the 1870s by settlers and can cause problems for native species, as they eat so much.

• They’re called hedgehogs because they live in hedges and make a grunting sound like hogs. Once upon a time, they were called ‘urchins’. Look at the images below of a hedgehog and a sea urchin. Can you work out why they were called urchins?
