YEARS

Melbourne Youth Orchestras 2017 Programs

For the past 50 years, Melbourne Youth Orchestras has been bringing young Victorian musicians together to participate in ensemble music-making. Our educational program continues to unleash creativity through inspiration and exploration, ultimately inspiring our members to reach their potential through music. Melbourne Youth Orchestras is recognised as one of Australia’s leading centres for ensemble music making and training, and a meeting place for young musicians and their families who travel from all over metropolitan and regional Victoria to participate.

OUR LOGO STORY The Melbourne Youth Orchestras logo conveys MYO’s inspirational music program through the re-interpretation of an abstract musical stave into an inclusive circular symbol. Five strands represent each of MYO’s program streams: symphony orchestras, symphonic bands, string orchestras, outreach programs, and the annual summer school. Deeper resonances include associations to listening, growth, vibrancy, orchestral layouts and the five decades of our history.

Welcome to our 2017 Programs The first thing you may notice in our 2017 program guide is our new name, Melbourne Youth Orchestras. While our association continues to be the much loved Melbourne Youth Music (MYM) which has served us well, we will now be trading as Melbourne Youth Orchestras (MYO). This name best describes our focus on bringing people together for the joy of music, and highlights our proud place as a member of the national and international network of orchestras and youth orchestras.

Dorian Jones Chief Executive Officer

Our new logo conveys MYO’s inspirational music program through the imaginative reworking of a musical stave into a circle. Five strands represent each of our program streams: symphony orchestras, symphonic bands, string orchestras, outreach programs, and the annual summer school. In testing, our members have made further associations including an ear, sound waves and ripples on a pond surface; perhaps there will be personal resonances for you, too. We’re turning 50! There’s a lot to celebrate and we have a terrific birthday year planned with new works, alumni conductors and soloists, an education partnership with the Australian World Orchestra, and a special program at the State Library of Victoria. All the details are included in a lift-out birthday card at the centre of this program guide. Our bands program goes from strength to strength and so we’re introducing a new concert band for beginner players. The Junior Concert Band will be a wonderful experience introducing young players to the joy of collective music-making, conducted by talented educator Erin Ellenburg. There’s so much happening in 2017 and not enough space for me to describe it all here. I encourage you to delve into our program guide and be a part of Melbourne Youth Orchestras in 2017. Dorian Jones Chief Executive Officer

Virtuosity

Virtuosity is a concerto soloist development program offering future soloists the chance to learn from the best. For any budding musician, learning and playing a concerto piece is considered to be an essential part of their education and a standard requirement for most orchestral auditions. However, it is rare for young musicians to have the opportunity to rehearse and perform a concerto with full-sized, orchestral accompaniment. Virtuosity participants will learn the artistic differences and challenges of concerto playing alongside a full-sized ensemble while being mentored by industry professionals. Virtuosity takes part in three stages: online application, Semi-Final performance and the Grand Final. Throughout each stage, participants will be given support and guidance for them to be the best musician they can be.

APPLICATION Applicants must be Victorian residents, aged 15 to 25 years as at 1 January, 2017. Applicants will select a solo work or movement with orchestral accompaniment, and provide a recording of themselves playing the solo part. The piece must not exceed 15 minutes. Recordings may be supplied as YouTube links, audio files or on USB drive, recorded in a single take. It is not necessary to use an accompanist for the video recording. Online applications are open until Friday 17 February, 2017. Application Fee: $60 The Grand Final performance will take place on Sunday 17 September, 7pm at Melbourne Recital Centre.

Virtuosity is the ideal springboard into professional concerto performance, participation in competitions and advanced musical development – both on and off stage.

Each course is 10 hours’ duration and to suit the needs of regional and rural teachers, courses are delivered online and in the teachers’ own time.
