This year holds special significance as we proudly commemorate the 12th anniversary of our Chinese New Year Concert series, and tonight, as we usher in the Year of the Dragon, we embark on a musical journey that explores the rich tapestry of Chinese and Western compositions. Our esteemed program features captivating works by renowned composers Li Huanzhi, Zheng Qiufeng, and Liu Tieshan and Mao Yuan. These compositions will resonate alongside timeless masterpieces from the Western classical repertoire by Puccini and Dvořák. Guiding our talented musicians is the distinguished conductor Maestro Xu Zhong and joining us on this extraordinary night is the awardwinning soprano Cathy-Di Zhang. We extend heartfelt gratitude to our MSO and East meets West supporters, partners, and donors, including the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Melbourne, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, and the Australian Government through the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations. ACKNOWLEDGING COUNTRY In the first project of its kind in Australia, the MSO has developed a musical Acknowledgment of Country with music composed by Yorta Yorta composer Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO, featuring Indigenous languages from across Victoria. Generously supported by Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and the Commonwealth Government through the Australian National Commission for UNESCO, the MSO is working in partnership with Short Black Opera and Indigenous language custodians who are generously sharing their cultural knowledge. The Acknowledgement of Country allows us to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which we perform in the language of that country and in the orchestral language of music.

About Long Time Living Here In all the world, only Australia can lay claim to the longest continuing cultures and we celebrate this more today than in any other time since our shared history began. We live each day drawing energy from a land which has been nurtured by the traditional owners for more than 2000 generations. When we acknowledge country we pay respect to the land and to the people in equal measure. As a composer I have specialised in coupling the beauty and diversity of our Indigenous languages with the power and intensity of classical music. In order to compose the music for this Acknowledgement of Country Project I have had the great privilege of working with no fewer than eleven ancient languages from the state of Victoria, including the language of my late Grandmother, Yorta Yorta woman Frances McGee. I pay my deepest respects to the elders and ancestors who are represented in these songs of acknowledgement and to the language custodians who have shared their knowledge and expertise in providing each text. I am so proud of the MSO for initiating this landmark project and grateful that they afforded me the opportunity to make this contribution to the ongoing quest of understanding our belonging in this land. — Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO

Li Biao has enjoyed a successful career as both conductor and percussion soloist. In 2019, he was named Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he is the current Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra and the Artistic Director of the Tianjin Opera and Dance Theater.

李飚是一名成功的指挥家与打击乐独奏家。2019年,李飚受 任为北京交响乐团艺术总监和首席指挥。此外,李飚目前还 担任天津交响乐团音乐总监和首席指挥、天津歌舞剧院艺术 总监。

Li Biao has given performances in over 70 countries and has collaborated with many renowned orchestras, including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony, Russian National Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, the NDR Orchestra, Danish National Orchestra, Israel Symphony, Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Polish Radio Symphony, China National Symphony, Beijing Symphony, Shanghai Symphony, the NCPA Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He has worked with many notable artists including Mstislav Rostropovich, Christoph Eschenbach, Lawrence Foster, Jonathan Nott, Fabio Luisi, Truls Mørk and Vadim Repin. It is his mission through his work to use creative energy to show audiences the limitless potential and inherent beauty of music.

CATHY-DI ZHANG SOPRANO

张滴 女高音

Award-winning Australian soprano Cathy-Di Zhang is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London. Since returning to Australia in 2019, she has sung a number of leading roles for the nation’s major performing arts organisations.

For Opera Australia, she has appeared as Micaëla in Carmen and Rosina in The Barber of Seville; for Pinchgut Opera – Amour/La folie in Rameau’s Platée and Créuse in Charpentier’s Médée; Mimi in La bohème for State Opera of South Australia; Zhu YingTai in Richard Mills’ new work The Butterfly Lovers for Victorian Opera. In 2023, Cathy-Di sang Zerlina in Don Giovanni for Opera Australia, Zhu YingTai in The Butterfly Lovers in Singapore and returned to Opera Australia as Rosina. In 2024, she sings Euridice/Amore in Gluck’s Orphée and Musetta in La bohème for Opera Australia. Prior to the pandemic, Cathy-Di sang the role of Mädchen in a new production of Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny for Festival d’Aix-en-Provence under Esa-Pekka Salonen and, subsequently, for Dutch National Opera under Markus Stenz. Her other operatic roles have included Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), the title role in Massenet’s Cendrillon, Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel) and Lisa (La sonnambula). She has appeared as a soloist with orchestras throughout Europe and Asia and has performed regularly in chamber music across Italy in trio and quartet (with violin, cello and piano).

Spring Festival Overture

Dance of the Yao Tribes

Li Huanzhi (李煥之) (1919–2000) is one of the best-known of China’s composers. The Spring Festival Overture (春節 序曲) is a highly typical festival piece, making much use of percussion, simple rhythmic figures, and pentatonic folk-like melodies. It was composed in 1949 and draws on a type of drum and tabor folk-music for its inspiration.

Dance of the Yao Tribe (瑶族舞曲) vividly depicts the sight of song and dance in the festive celebration of the Yao people, a minority populating Yunnan and Guangxi in China.

Lively dance rhythms in the outer sections contrast with a more soulful slower middle section. The Spring Festival Overture (1956) provides a fitting opening to tonight’s celebration of Eastern and Western culture, as it is capable of being played on Western or traditional Chinese instruments or combinations of both. Its composer, Li Huangzhi was an important figure in Chinese music and founded the China Central Chinese Orchestra in 1960. For listeners of Western classical music, the pentatonic flavour of Spring Festival Overture may call to mind Dvořák’s folk influenced works. The overture may have local associations but in 2007 it was one of 30 musical selections beamed back to Earth from China’s first lunarprobe satellite in time for the Lantern Festival, the formal end to the Lunar New Year holiday.

Pamir, How Beautiful My Home Town

The night has fallen. Dressed up, the people gather in the moonlight beating long drums. The quiet mild theme on the strings sounds like a fair girl dancing gracefully. With other girls joining in the dance one after another, the mood of the music gradually becomes excited. Suddenly, the bassoon and the oboe play a forceful and enthusiastic melody derived from the theme, just a group of young men, unable to restrain their emotions, rush into the crowd of dancing girls and begin to express their excitement with dance. In the second part, in triple-time, the melody is sometimes cantabile and sometimes in a bouncy rhythm, just like a young couple in love expressing their affection to each other and looking forward to their happy future. The third part is the recapitulation of the beginning. The people again join in the dance one after another, bouncing, spinning and singing. The atmosphere becomes more and more ardent, while the people’s enthusiasm becomes more and more unrestrained. Finally the ardent tutti drives the music to its culminant ending.

GIACOMO PUCCINI

Named one of the “Top Ten Musicians in China” in 1987, Zheng Qiufeng has written many works in honour of his home country, China. Four Seasons of the Motherland is one of the most popular among his compositions, depicting the beauty of the four seasons in China. One of the most well-known songs from the suite, Pamir, How Beautiful My Home Town, with lyrics by Qu Cong, lovingly represents the season of Autumn.

Gianni Schicchi: O mio babbino caro (Oh, my dear papa)

Pamir is a highland region of Central Asia located in Xinjiang, China, known for its natural beauty and abundance of great mountains and rivers. Lush pastures, herds of cattle and sheep, gurgling streams and blue skies are described by the soloist in a beautiful depiction of Pamir. Glittering woodwind solos welcome us into Pamir, with the soprano opening with a high, bird-like introduction, imitating the call of the skylark, shifting in intensity and volume as the piece continues to depict the wild skylark flying freely amongst the clouds, the stunning sights of Pamir beneath its wings. What begins as a slow, passionate opening abruptly transitions into an upbeat 7/8 meter, dance-like rhythms and Tajik folk-song material expressing the joy and vitality of being immersed in nature. © Information compiled from notes by Yuan Tong and Qiu Chengnan

Cathy-Di Zhang soprano Puccini was the most significant Italian opera composer after Verdi. He may still be the most popular. La bohème, and the arias ‘None shall sleep’ from Turandot and ‘One Fine Day’ from Madame Butterfly have entered popular culture. For Puccini, opera was a total theatrical experience. He spent much time working out plots and dialogue with his librettists, and even agonised over the precise moment when a curtain should fall. His concerns led him into a style known as verismo, the musical counterpart of literary realism. But it was Puccini’s essential lyricism which really made his operas stand out. Their dramatic impact derives from Puccini’s ability to compress all the emotion of a moment in a single musical statement. Puccini’s one act comic opera, Gianni Schicchi, details the fortunes of ‘businessman’ Gianni Schicchi and the Donati family. Schicchi is summoned by relatives of the wealthy Buoso Donati to help them falsify Buoso’s will so that they, rather than the church, can inherit his money. When Schicchi arrives at Buoso’s home he promptly gets into an argument with Zita, the head of the Donati family. Schicchi then refuses to help them. Lauretta, Schicchi’s daughter, begs her father to still help the Donatis because she is in love with Rinuccio, one of the younger members of the family. ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK

(1841–1904)

Symphony No.9 in E minor, Op.95 From the New World I. Adagio – Allegro molto II. Largo III. Scherzo: Molto vivace IV. Finale: Allegro con fuoco Antonín Dvořák was the leading Czech composer of the late 19th century, renowned for bringing the sound of Czech folk music into the concert hall. Writing in Harper’s Magazine in 1895, he summarized a common idea of the time: “All races have their distinctively national songs, which they at once recognize as their own, even if they have never heard them before.” Many Czech, Hungarian, and Russian composers sought to discover these songs and use them in national styles of classical music.

that brings back the opening theme of the first movement, the English horn melody returns and grows warmer with strings. The third movement, Vivace, begins with a loud falling pattern that is very similar to the second movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The music here is dancelike, inspired by Hiawatha’s wedding feast in the Longfellow poem. The finale, Allegro con fuoco, opens with a tense rising half-step pattern in the strings, building to a powerful brass fanfare, and then a second theme in the clarinet. Dvořák brings back melodies from earlier movements before arriving at a coda and a fortissimo E-major ending. But in a final touch evoking America’s open landscapes, he adds an echoing chord that fades into silence. © Benjamin Pesetsky 2024

Americans, too, wondered if they should have classical music of their own. In 1885 the New York philanthropist Jeannette Thurber founded the National Conservatory of Music of America and in 1892 she recruited Dvořák as its director. She hoped he would help educate local musicians and spur a national style like he had in Bohemia. In the words of the critic H. L. Mencken, he was hired to “introduce Americans to their own music.” In New York, Dvořák met Harry T. Burleigh, a Black composer and singer, who introduced him to a variety of American folk styles. Dvořák concluded that American classical music should draw from African American spirituals as well as the indigenous music of American Indians. He wrote: “These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.” By 1895 Dvořák was homesick, and an economic crisis left the conservatory’s finances, and his expensive salary, in jeopardy. He returned to Europe for good, having completed two major pieces as models: the “American” String Quartet and the “New World” Symphony. The symphony was premiered by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893, conducted by Anton Seidl, and was immediately met with acclaim. There are actually no genuine American folk tunes in the “New World” Symphony – just the sound and spirit of them. The middle movements were partly inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha, a fictional epic poem about American Indians. And Dvořák’s own Czech style still remains throughout the piece, even as he added American elements. The first movement begins with a slow introduction that paints a hazy scene. Then the faster Allegro molto section introduces a bold call-and-response pattern, first heard between the horns and woodwinds. A second theme appears with the flute and oboe playing quietly together in a pentatonic (five-note) scale – something Dvořák considered an “Indian” sound. The last theme to be introduced is a lyrical flute solo reminiscent of the spiritual Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, which Burleigh taught to Dvořák. The slow movement, Largo, begins with seven mysterious chords that connect into a famous English horn solo. This, too, sounds like a traditional spiritual, but it was actually composed by Dvořák. 《瑶族舞曲》生动地描绘了中国云南与广西的少数民 族—瑶族在节日庆典中载歌载舞的情景。

《春节序曲》是一首极其典型的节庆音乐作品,充分 运 用了打击乐、简洁的节奏以 及民乐的五 声音阶旋 律。该曲创作于1949年,灵感来源于民间鼓乐。 序曲的开头和结尾节奏欢快,与深情舒缓的中段形成 对比。 《春节序曲》(1956年)在今晚的东西方文化庆典中 作为开场曲目最为恰当不过,因为该曲既可以使用西 洋乐器,也可运用中国传统乐器,甚至可以两者共同 演奏。李焕之是中国音乐界的泰斗级人物,中国中央 民族乐团便由他于1960年创立。对于西方古典音乐的 听众来说, 《春节序曲》中的五声音阶可能会让人联 想到德沃夏克受到民间乐曲影响的作品。尽管乐曲本 身可能 有一定 的 地 域 色 彩,但在 20 07年, 《春 节序 曲》却成为了中国首颗探月卫星传回地球的30首音乐 选段之一,正好赶上了农历新年假期的最后一天 — 元宵节。

随着越来越多的姑娘纷纷加入舞蹈行列,音乐的情绪 逐渐高涨起来。突然出现一段由巴松管、双簧管演奏 的主题衍生旋律,热烈而欢快,恰似一群小伙子情不 自禁地闯入姑娘们的行列,欢腾舞跃起来,尽情抒发 兴奋的心情。 在第二部分,三拍子旋律时而婉转,时而跳 跃,就像 一对年轻的恋人相互表达爱慕之情,展望幸福未来。 第三部分是对开头的复述。人们再次加入舞列,欢跳 着,旋转着,气氛热烈,感 情奔放,最终 在热 情洋溢 的合奏中结束。
