There is something uniquely magical about the music of Broadway. From the moment the orchestra begins, a world of emotion, storytelling and drama bursts to life. It’s this very magic that inspired An Evening on Broadway – a symphonic celebration of the stars of the stage and the unforgettable music that has captivated audiences for generations.
Curating this program has been a true joy. Each song is not only a musical gem but a powerful reminder of the universal language of storytelling through song. From the haunting romance of The Phantom of the Opera and the sweeping emotion of Les Misérables to the rhythmic pulse of West Side Story and the iconic melodies of Evita, Sunset Boulevard and Carousel, this concert is a tribute to the enduring artistry of Broadway.
Conducting Broadway music is a thrilling challenge. These scores are nuanced, intricate and bursting with colour and energy. They demand versatility and dynamism from the orchestra – balancing the precision of the concert hall with the flair of the stage. Bringing them to life with the MSO – an orchestra I’m continually proud to collaborate with –is always a privilege. The extraordinary musicianship and collaborative spirit of this orchestra never cease to inspire me.
It’s particularly special to return to this repertoire with two powerhouse artists: Amy Manford and Josh Piterman.
Amy’s voice possesses a rare purity and strength, effortlessly soaring across a concert hall while conveying the subtlest of emotions. Her musicality and stagecraft are luminous. Amy is a force on the international stage, performing with some of the
world’s biggest names. Amy and I have performed together for more than a decade, most recently in Disney in Concert with the MSO, as well as the Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber in Singapore earlier this year. I knew she would bring something truly exceptional to this program, especially given the broad and diverse range of characters she performs.
Josh’s presence is magnetic, with a voice that is rich, expressive, and deeply moving. His acclaimed performances in The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables have firmly established him as one of Australia’s leading musical theatre talents. It is such a joy to collaborate with him once again, following our successful collaboration in Singapore with Amy earlier this year.
As a duo, Amy and Josh have shared the stage in The Phantom of the Opera, both in Australia and internationally, bringing extraordinary chemistry and vocal brilliance to the iconic roles of Christine and the Phantom.
Together with the MSO, we hope to offer you not just a concert, but a true journey through the heart of Broadway.
As I once heard so beautifully expressed: ‘The best of Broadway is always a little piece of hope.’
I hope this evening brings you exactly that – through music, through story, and the timeless joy of Broadway.

AMY MANFORD SOPRANO
Australian-American soprano Amy Manford is best known globally for her performance as Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, both in Australia and the original West End production in London.
Amy regularly tours around the world with classical crossover legend Andrea Bocelli. Most recently she performed alongside him in Asia, Australia and South Africa after making her US debut on his North American tour, opening at the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, she completed her second North American tour with celebrated crossover cellist Hauser.
Amy has co-produced and performed in a number of live concerts with Disney, including the 100th anniversary celebration concert, which toured Australia in 2023. In the same year, she also released her first EP, A Dream is a Wish, which is available to stream on all platforms. Her production company, MM Creative Productions, recently completed
another sold-out run of Disney in Concert: Live at the Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne.
She was named Creative of the Year at the 2023
Marie Claire Women of the Year awards and has sung at major events such as the 2021 AFL Grand Final in Australia and for King Charles at Buckingham Palace.
Last year, Amy focused on songwriting, releasing her first original song, ‘Ghost of You’, following her viral cover of ‘Walking in the Air’. She will continue releasing music throughout the year in addition to performing live concerts with orchestras around the world.
Amy Manford trained as an opera singer and holds a master’s degree from the Royal College of Music in London and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
JOSH PITERMAN TENOR
Melbourne-born Josh Piterman is an established musical theatre performer, classical crossover artist, presenter and author, who has been working consistently on Australian and UK stages for close to 20 years.
His theatrical credits include being a part of international pop opera group the Ten Tenors, the role of Tony in the 2010 Australian production of West Side Story, Bustopher Jones/Gus/Growltiger in the 2015–16 Australian season of Cats (winning the Green Room Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical), Corny Collins in the UK tour of Hairspray, and Gerry Goffin in the 2017–18 Australian tour of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Josh made a critically acclaimed West End and role debut in 2019 when he took on the coveted role of the Phantom in the long-running original production of
The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre (now His Majesty’s Theatre), a role he was thrilled to reprise in 2022 in the Opera Australia production (Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne). He returned to London in 2023 to star as Jean Valjean in the West End production of Les Misérables.
Josh is the host of the podcast Behind The Mask, achieving #2 Self-Improvement Podcast on the iTunes Charts. His debut book of the same name was published in April this year by Echo Publishing.
Josh Piterman is also a proud ambassador of the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation, My Room –Children’s Cancer Charity, and Social Health Australia.
When I was younger, I adored watching classic musicals like My Fair Lady and The King and I. The music filled me with joy, and I dreamed of one day stepping onto the stage, twirling in a beautiful gown just like the actresses in those films.

From the haunted soul of the Phantom to the relentless heart of Jean Valjean – each role has been a mirror, revealing parts of myself that needed illuminating. Musical theatre has been like therapy, showing me who I am behind the mask.
