Music that moves us

Music has the power to move us. Even unfamiliar tones make us feel deeply. The hush before the first note, to the rush of a standing ovation. The jolt of recognition when a melody sparks a memory.
In 2026 the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 120th anniversary with a bold new look and renewed commitment to bringing music to more people across Victoria.
For 120 years, we have shaped the sound of our city. Our music is a living, breathing record of our legacy – from the echoes of our past to the whispers of our future.
Because sound isn’t just heard. It’s seen. It’s felt. It’s best enjoyed together. It moves... and it moves us.
Experience music that truly moves you. Experience the MSO.

MSO Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor Jaime Martín
Welcome
Welcome to the MSO’s 2026 Season – a milestone as we celebrate 120 years!
This year, we continue our musical journey through the symphonies of Dvořák and Mahler. Following the enthusiasm surrounding our Beethoven Festival in 2024, I’m delighted to introduce a Brahms Festival to conclude the season. I’ve always believed that performing Brahms offers the intimacy of chamber music on a symphonic scale –an experience that’s deeply rewarding for the orchestra, the audience and also for the conductor.
We’re excited to host an inspiring line-up of guest artists who will bring to life both newly commissioned pieces and time-honoured repertoire.
To our dedicated supporters and subscribers – thank you for continuing support. Your encouragement allows us to keep creating powerful musical experiences that resonate deeply with our community.
I look forward to sharing all that the 2026 Season has to offer and to welcoming you to another unforgettable year.
It is with the greatest pleasure that we introduce our 2026 season – the 120th season for the MSO. My thanks to Jaime Martín, Katharine Bartholomeusz-Plows and the Artistic Programming team for a wonderful blend of concerts which appeal to all tastes and expectations. They have truly found that magical symphonic ‘sweet spot’, creating a program that inspires our musicians to give you phenomenal MSO experiences. I’m personally very proud of the important work we do in championing Australian and First Nations musicians, and look forward to hearing more from these artists. I also warmly welcome the hugely talented Natalie Chee back home to Australia who joins the Orchestra as our new Concertmaster.
We’ve built an incredible local legacy over the last 120 years, which will be celebrated with the launch of a new-look MSO in 2026. Our beloved Sidney Myer Free Concert Series has become a real rite of passage for thousands of Victorians each year and we’re keen to expand on that success further to make it easier for everyone to enjoy our concerts.
Jaime Martín Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor Chair supported by Besen Family Foundation.
We want you to experience the MSO in your own way, wherever and whoever you are. Our MSO In Your Neighbourhood concerts let you experience the MSO in your own backyard, while new and accessible formats like our Immersion Weekends and Relaxed performances let you absorb our music in your own time and in the best way for you.
In added good news, we’re also making it more reasonable for people to come to our concerts by keeping 2026 prices at last year’s levels. It is a privilege to have the support of generous donors who share our vision of providing affordable tickets for our audiences.
We look forward to seeing you in 2026. I hope you will join me at the Bowl for our Sydney Myer Free Concerts –a great way for us to start our 120th year together.

R. Strauss Rosenkavalier Suite
Mozart Oboe Concerto
Bartók Concerto for Orchestra
Did you know Strauss admired Mozart? We admire them both – and we’re a fan of Bartók, too. Enjoy the music of these three composers whose careers spanned different countries and eras, but who remain united in their abilities to bring out the brightest colours of the orchestra. Strauss and Mozart are often on the same concert program, partly because their music sounds so compatible when it’s played side by side. Listen for the connection in Strauss’ warm and inviting Rosenkavalier Suite, which stems from the comic opera he set in Mozart’s own time and place, 18th Century Vienna. While the Mozart concerto places our new Principal Oboe in the spotlight, Bartók gives every section of the orchestra the chance to shine. It’s solos for all!

It’s catchy, it’s jazzy, and our Chief Conductor Jaime Martín will be dancing along from the podium.
Our concert also features Melbourne-born soprano and TV star Danielle de Niese. She has sung for the Metropolitan Opera and Covent Garden, and recorded with Hans Zimmer for the music in Ridley Scott’s film Hannibal. Emerging Artists
We believe in building the future of our artform by supporting the next generation of musicians, artists, composers, and conductors.
First Voices Composer Program
An annual program for emerging First Nations composers that aims to enhance cultural vibrancy through collaboration and the nurturing of talent. First Voices offers participants an orchestral music commission along with the opportunity to workshop intensively with musicians and staff from the orchestra and guest composer mentors.
Join us for the First Voices Showcase on 3 June 2026 to hear the world premieres of these works!
Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers’ Program
Through this program, four participants are mentored by leading Australian composers and compose a 10-minute piece. Since its inception in 2003, more than 90 young composers from across Australia have had works commissioned and performed by the MSO.
The four pieces are performed by the MSO in a showcase, with one of the participants to be chosen as the MSO’s Young Composer in Residence. Join us on 24 January 2026 for the world premiere of these works!
The Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers’ Program and Cybec First Nations Composer in Residence position are supported by Cybec Foundation.

Ensemble Dutala Residency
The Ensemble Dutala Residency provides emerging First Nations instrumentalists the opportunity to undertake side-by-side workshops with the MSO, receive mentorship from established MSO musicians, and perform alongside the MSO.
This residency, developed in partnership with Short Black Opera, is a first in Australia and redefines the landscape of Indigenous engagement in the arts.
Australian Conducting Academy
Run in partnership with professional symphony orchestras across Australia and led by Benjamin Northey, this national program is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of home-grown conductors to ensure the sustainability of the orchestral industry in Australia.
The Australian Conducting Academy presents a unique opportunity for aspiring conductors from Australia and New Zealand to learn from experienced orchestral leaders and to have the chance to work with all major orchestras in Australia.
Snare Drum Award
Established by MSO percussionist Robert Cossom in 2004, the Snare Drum Award is designed to encourage the pursuit of excellence in snare drum performance in Australia and New Zealand.
Open to undergraduate tertiary students from Australia and New Zealand, this award provides an exclusive opportunity for applicants to further develop audition skills and performance techniques in a professional environment. Join us on 17 August 2026 to see the next generation of percussionists compete!
The MSO Snare Drum Award is supported by Tim & Lyn Edward, Cecilie Hall, and the late Hon. Michael Watt KC.
MSO Academy
Providing young instrumentalists a vital final bridge to a successful career, the MSO Academy is an exciting opportunity for post-graduate musicians. During the year-long program Academy members perform in MSO concerts, receive mentoring and participate in a full range of professional development activities designed to prepare them for a career in music.
Join us for the Academy End of Year Showcase on 13 December 2026 to experience the culmination of the Academy members’ year with the MSO!
