I am Melanny Rojas, I’m a fourth year student pursuing my five-year Bachelor of Architecture program in Virgina Tech. I have experience with a variety of architectural software and am always eager to expand my skill set.

My goal is to use my work to make a positive impact on communities, leveraging the power of design to bring about meaningful change.

Justice For All

Architecture can transform the justice system by designing inclusive, transparent, and efficient courthouses. Thoughtful design fosters community connections, promotes social responsibility, and makes justice more accessible and meaningful for all. During my fourth-year fall semester, I was assigned a project to design a courthouse in Danville, VA. Recognizing the challenges posed by the opioid epidemic, I envisioned a space that not only administers justice but also serves as a hub for social services such as counseling, financial assistance, adoption support, educational programs, and community reform initiatives.

This organic form was inspired by the urban landscape and guided by the sun’s path. Its elongated design creates open, spacious areas, reducing feelings of crowding and confinement.

This not only provides comfort for it’s users but also generates a feeling of a public open space

Duality of Justice

For my fourth year spring semester project I had the privilege to work with a peer from my studio, Dane Sosna. We were tasked with making a courthouse located in Richmond, VA

We sought to capture the dynamic nature of the justice system by using kit-bashed assets from various Richmond locations for the building’s facade. Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC).

3rd Year Spring Semester

We wanted to make clear circulation pathways to create a harmonious space that meets both the practical needs of justice and the psychological comfort of its users.

The interior design presents a deliberate departure from the external chaos, Instead embracing a serene and unspoiled atmosphere within the courtroom. Here, Tranquility prevails, offering a stark contrast to the exterior.

Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) serves as the primary material. This unconventional choice reflects the diverse and ever-changing landscape of justice.

Adaptive Reuse

For our third year fall semester project, we focused on adaptive reuse of the William Ulmer Brewery located in Bushwick, New York.

Re-purposed into a vibrant food market, it not only offers affordable food and job opportunities but also brings a comforting touch of home to the predominantly Latino neighborhood, catering to those navigating a new cultural landscape.
