THE PRODUCT AND THE COMPANY

Anza is a company that believes in providing customers with an all-natural, organic, fair trade, flavorful honey, all while giving b ack proceeds to saving bees. The product is desert flower honey, a special type of honey only found in deserts. Our purpose as a company is to provide our customers with a honey option that you can feel good about buying.

THE TARGET AUDIENCE

This product is for conscious shoppers who are interested in organic and fair trade honey.

It is meant to provide them with an alter native, more environmentally-friendly, high quality product as opposed a typical store brand.

PACKAGING REQUIREMENTS

The product itself is liquid so the container will need to be able to keep this inside without crystallizing. It will also have to be environmentally friendly somehow. Ideally, it should incorporate the “honey” aspect into it so we would need to do more research on what that entails. It should contain the standard amount of honey that most honey containers have so doing more market research on that is essential. We would also like the packaging to be unique, somehow.

DESIGN DIRECTION

We aim this product to look “friendly” and “earthy” and “organic ” as if it came from nature.

It is important to note that our honey is fair trade, natural, and organic on the container. We will also need a nutrition label. We woukd like to mention the fact that the company gives back 50 percent of our proceeds to support the bee population.

DESIGN ELEMENTS • Outer layer can be used as inspiration for the packaging itself • The round shape can be adapted to a cylindrical design or ball form • creating mini “spheres” containing honey • creating round packaging • Use of “thorns” or something similar to protect the package • There are many different kinds of cactus, each with different shapes • The color lends itself to different possibilities because of the bright colors and hues

DESIGN ELEMENTS • The bumpy outer layer can inspire the packaging • The round/ball form • The variety of colors lends itself to packaging possibilities • The blossom could potentially be used as a graphic element for the design • The thick skin can be adapted to the packaging • The little pulps’ shape can be adapted • The pattern of the orange as well

FURTHER RESEARCH Upon doing further research, I looked into sustainable products that could be used in the production of my packaging. I looked into Casein, a protein that comes from dairy and is a byproduct of the milk production industry. At the moment, there is ongoing research being performed in order to turn it into edible plastic that could be used within food packaging. This gave me the idea that one could use it as a wrapper for honey. As a placeholder, I looked into using dish detergent pods to represent this idea since casein plastic will not scheduled to be on grocery store shelfs until the next two years.

I also looked into different materials to use for my outer packaging that would hold these “honey” pods. Based on my cactus case study, I decided to look for materials that had the same outer thick structure. It was, then, that I realized recycled cardboard had the same “corrugated” ridged shape as cactus so I settled on this material.

Moreover, as per my creative brief, my product was geared towards a conscious audience so I laid my trust in that they would use common sense and store this product carefully because it is a high-quality product. For the purpose of this project, I printed on recycled cardboard stock and I used plastic stickers to represent “casein” plastic stickers to seal the package.
