DESIGNER'S NOTE

W hen thinking about the theme for our MELANIE ROWE she / her

Designer, Trend Services Brand Portfolio Melanie received her Bachelor's Degree from Florida State University, in Retail Merchandising and Product Development. Prior to coming to Caleres 7 years ago, she worked in various retail management positions. After her first year in the St. Louis corporate office at Famous Footwear as a Buying Rep, she moved to LifeStride in the corporate wholesale division as a product coordinator - where she found her love for design and has grown as a designer for the last 6 years.

first issue of this magazine, I wanted it to be resonant and acknowledging of the socio-economic world around us. I wanted to ensure that our due diligence was done in delivering the most accurate, up-to-date, and informative content revolving around our industry and design. But as a necessary and welcome contrast, we must also pay homage to the beautiful, innovative, and forward thinking ideas that help Original Artwork by: Melanie Rowe keep us inspired every day. A Modern Renaissance, the theme of this year's inaugural issue - is an attempt to encapsulate the combination of these perspectives, through the lens of a new year. Seeing so much new life springing from the darkness of the last few years in the pandemic, reminded me of learning about the Renaissance period in school. For brief background, "The Renaissance was a fervent period of European cultural, artistic, political and economic “rebirth” following the Middle Ages...the Renaissance promoted the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature and art. Some of the greatest thinkers, authors, statesmen, scientists and artists in human history thrived during this era, while global exploration opened up new lands and...is credited with bridging the gap between the Middle Ages and modern-day civilization." (History.com Editors, 2018). The resurgence of so many new, innovative, and exciting creators after such a low point for us all, gives me hope for the future. Reflecting on and learning from the past, actively comprehending and engaging responsibly in the present, and creatively preparing for the future are all critical facets of not only the design and development process, but also of our lives. - Melanie

WHAT IS

CAL LAB?

INSPIRE.

Design fulfills its role by responding to social changes and delivering on the consumer's lifestyle needs. Revolutionary design anticipates those changes. Unleashing the power of consumer data will allow design to gain a deeper understanding of our consumer's needs. Leveraging our customer relations marketing organization, customer insights, analytics, data and greater learnings from in-person focus groups will bring the social and human aspects of design to the forefront and set the foundation for innovative solutions. Being a step ahead is particularly critical today. The best strategy is anticipating future developments and finding ways of aligning changes within the design process.

CalLab@caleres.com

Design is revolutionary by nature, but the same can’t be said about the design process within a traditional environment. Communication, collaboration, and creative exploration are all key for delivering dynamic product innovation. Cal Lab is the platform to facilitate

IGNITE.

and drive this change.

According to Netflix’s Story of Pixar, when Disney invested in Pixar they focused on financial goals at the detriment of the creative process. Ultimately the product suffered. Films flopped following the take-over. They reinstated the creative work spaces for organic creativity to return. The challenge for designers in corporate settings is the lack of leeway in terms of variance. The standard approach involves choosing an idea and putting it through the workflow, sticking close to the outlined business plan. Maintaining a balanced approach is more important than ever, a bias toward purely safe commercially-oriented design where variance is sometimes ruled out would curtail innovation.

INNOVATE. The greatest ideas and innovations usually come from an organic creative place. This is an integral aspect of design. We will ensure innovation remains a focus, to avoid a fully disciplined restrictive approach which is detrimental to innovation. Revolutionizing design entails challenging the industry’s status quo. We will empower designers to percolate ideas off or onmarket cycle and innovate through 3D, CAD visualizations, assigned segments of sample budgets for innovation prototyping and an enhanced product performance wear testing process.

NATELLE BADDELEY

she / her

SVP, DESIGN, MERCHANDISING, AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY, Editor-in-Chief

Caleres releases its first edition of the Cal Lab Magazine

As we emerge from the past two years suspension of life as we knew it, one thing is for sure --we have evolved, along with the industry and the consumer. We realized it was essential to change our approach to research, prognostication, and product creation. This reset and reinvention formed the basis of this issue’s past, present, future theme. Our Cal Lab Designer Melanie Rowe reveals more about this influence on page 5. Our mission is to produce a visually dynamic communication published quarterly for our Caleres community, providing a unique voice that is crowd sourced from the Caleres brand portfolio’s product and design teams. The magazine will deliver authoritative trend truths, share pride and passion for our shoes, and support our confidence as we dare to predict what the consumer wants. We hope to encourage creative thinking, compelling innovations, and use of the latest technologies to help us shape our future decisions and encourage fresh ideas to percolate. This is essential as we task ourselves to be more precise and improve design accuracy. We’ve edited down the spring and fall product, materials and color trends beginning on page 14; we found great new collaborations on page 138; we look to the future with greater integration of new technologies and a look at the impact of the metaverse on the industry starting on page 60; and we examine how we are setting and delivering our product goals for the sustainability of our environment beginning on page 38. We aim to INSPIRE, IGNITE, and INNOVATE, and hope you will enjoy reading the magazine. Please provide feedback at callab@caleres.com, check out our permanent ‘go-to’ Cal Lab destination on the Plaza. Please comment using #CaleresCreates. NATELLE BADDELEY, EDITOR

THE 10 THEMES THAT WILL DEFINE THE FASHION AGENDA IN 2022.

"The state of the global fashion industry in 2022...will be characterised by new and persisting challenges tempered by fresh opportunities to grow and evolve at a crucial time for most businesses."

THE 10 DEFINING THEMES IN THE STATE OF FASHION 2022, THE AUTHORITATIVE ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE BUSINESS OF FASHION AND MCKINSEY & COMPANY, HIGHLIGHTS STRATEGIES TO SAFEGUARD RECOVERY AND TAP NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN THE YEAR AHEAD. "

1. Uneven Recovery: In this patchy environment, fashion players with international footprints will need to look at investment decisions with precision, reassessing local conditions regularly while mitigating for market-specific risks. 2. Logistics Gridlock: Companies must rethink their sourcing strategies while implementing cutting-edge supply chain management, and building in greater flexibility to keep products flowing with customer demand in the year ahead. 3. Domestic Luxuries: Luxury players should engage more deeply with domestic consumers, rebalance their global retail footprints and dutyfree networks and invest in clienteling for local e-commerce channels. 4. Wardrobe Reboot: Brands should lean more on data-driven product development, adjusting their inventory mix accordingly to ensure that assortments resonate with consumers adjusting to new lifestyles. 5. Metaverse Mindset: Players should explore the potential of nonfungible tokens, gaming and virtual fashion — all of which offer fresh routes to creativity, community-building and commerce. 6. Social Shopping: Brands should double-down on tailored in-app purchase journeys and test opportunities in technologies such as livestreaming and augmented reality try-on. 7. Circular Textiles: Companies will need to embed closed-loop recycling technologies as they mature into the design phase of product development while adopting large-scale collection and sorting processes. 8. Product Passports: Businesses must coalesce around common authentication, transparency, and sustainability standards - and engage with pilot projects at scale to help brands build loyalty by enhancing consumer trust. 9. Cyber Resilience: Brands need to act urgently to shore up their defences and invest more to make digital security a strategic imperative. 10. Talent Crunch: Companies must refresh their talent strategies for an increasingly flexible, diverse and digitized workplace.

A Foreword . If you look up the word design in any dictionary, you'll see varying vague descriptions like "to create, fashion, execute, or construct according to plan" or "to make a drawing, pattern, or sketch of". For those privy to the design process, what goes on behind the curtain of a finished idea is so much more complex and detailed than any simple explanation on paper. Designing a product, an idea, a shoe - can often resemble a science experiment. A designer must take a series of steps, developing important attributes to create a design [hypothesis] properly. Observations, like trend research, are compiled and synthesized to come up with a general idea - consisting of making broad generalizations based on specific trends. Once a design is settled on, experimenting is introduced first through sketching then subsequently, prototyping and sampling. If a design successfully makes it past these stages, the final test commences at trade shows for the ultimate experimentation. The design process either finishes in success with a purchase, or begins again with new knowledge, and another opportunity for experimenting.

A Foreword . “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” — Jane Goodall As much as our technology, culture, and fashion have progressed in the last twenty years - so have our environmental issues. The fruits of our labors have been incredible, as have their impact on the earth. But with these labors have come inspiring and innovative ways to combat and help restore our essential life source. Fashion has always been known as a creative, forward thinking industry. Today's crop of new designers as well as established brands are putting sustainability at the top of their agendas. We're never one to turn down a creative opportunity, and our tools are finally within reach to begin re-cultivating the rich and vibrant roots from which we have grown and blossomed.

A Foreword . When we look for comparisons in people, situations, or even possessions - we often lay gaze upon our peers, consequently also those in direct competition with us. It's our primal and most effective way of determining if we measure up in the moment. This innate instinct, combined with the physical and intellectual tracking of our competitors - lays the groundwork for building and maintaining a strong foundational position amongst said peers. Football teams meticulously study game footage of opponents, better preparing themselves for victory in their imminent match up. Analyzing plays, specific movements, and individual players allows for the home team to gain an advantage over their adversaries by determining weak points and areas of opportunity in their play. Less physical, but equally as competitive - the world of fashion and shoes requires us to be, no pun intended, on our toes. Watching our fellow brands and designers is crucial for us to get ahead of the game, and stay on top. This is our playbook, let's go home team!

Diversity and Inclusion

Original Artwork by: Melanie Rowe

A Foreword . Stopping to take a look around in our beautiful world, you begin to see all of the incredible, diverse things that it is comprised of. Colors, textures, and fabrics. Sights, tastes, and smells...what makes it all so incredible - is it's diversity. With this abundance of exposure to what the world, and other people have to offer - inspiration and innovation can blossom and thrive. Would our communities, our closets even, be as interesting, dynamic, forward thinking, and exciting without this diversity? As we have seen the growth and spread of technology open the planet to an endless exchange of information - so we have also experienced this momentum of diverse inclusion and change. This world has never been more vibrant and colorful than it is right now because of this rich diversity. Our goal is to keep it that way, continue to make it better and even more beautiful.

TRUE COLORS with

Angelique Joseph

" Starting 6 years ago down a path of rebranding Naturalizer, I was excited to take on the challenge of bringing a different perspective to the design aesthetic and how we speak to the consumer through our Collections. I have always had a holistic ideology when thinking about consumer needs, and what my approach would be in designing that. The consumer has always come first, something I learned early from my Design Professor in College. Providing a story to our consumer was important to me. My team and I began brainstorming what those stories could be. What is important to her? I started to look at my own life and the women I knew around me to help give that guidance. Naturalizer was born off of understanding what women need in their life through out each decade, and the brand does just that. Listening to the consumer on her needs in the moment, what she was responding to and what is important to her in her life. Inclusivity is important to her and being a woman of color it is important to me as well.

There is no one nude for all women. We all come in different shades, that needs to be celebrated and embraced. At the time, we started to see the beginning of a few high end designers offering multiple nude colors for their audience but nothing at the mass market tier. I saw a white space and opportunity to offer this story to our consumer. I immediately went to our Marketing team and sales team to gain their support on the concept. I pushed the importance of inclusivity and acknowledging that our current Naturalizer audience over-indexes with the African American and Latina consumers. Once we relaunched the story with more support with Nat.com, retailers and IG, we received so much feedback from our consumers saying: ”Thank you, finally someone is doing this!” -ANGELIQUE JOSEPH, she / her Vice President, Design, Naturalizer

A Foreword . Sherlock and Watson. Thelma and Louise. Han Solo and Chewbacca. What do these pairings all have in common? They are iconic collaborations. These unexpected, yet extraordinary partnerships display the incredible power of bridging ideas and different perspectives to achieve success. Another common denominator we see in the aforementioned dynamic duos, the old adage 'opposites attract'. What makes these pairs even more interesting - is the polarity in the individuals that chose to come together. In this we see an amalgamation of ideas, viewpoints, backgrounds, and experiences combining to generate an outcome where all are favored - and more importantly successful. The importance of working together, collaborating on understanding the world, creating our businesses, and celebrating each other is crucial to the success of us all.

Fashion and Footwear

Original Artwork by: Melanie Rowe

A Foreword . We have a thing with shoes, therefore inherently and unequivocally - fashion. These cornerstones of style could not go one direction without the other. A true marriage, partnership, and collaboration - their journey through design, innovation, and culture are mutual and truly symbiotic in nature. What was once donned as pure necessity has grown, evolved, and expanded far beyond the origins of where our clothing began. Style itself, birthed from rich past traditions - is the act and creativity of breaking, contorting, and reshaping those molds into something new and inspiring. Fashion itself can truly act as our historical timeline - one artfully crafted, visually rich, and steeped in meaning. If "clothes make the [man]", it only makes sense we explore and analyze this essential counterpart to [man]'s real best friend, shoes.

STYLE

PHOTO BY VOGUE In a year of political and economic change - we examine the evolution of street style amongst these global reverberations within the fashion industry and beyond.

2021

HOW STREET STYLE CHANGED IN 2021, ACCORDING TO VOGUE RUNWAY’S PHOTOGRAPHERS

"Fashion has never been more expressive and more personal, or less coherent. The year’s hottest items range from silly fur hats to $1,000 clogs to sensual corsets, while our Instagram polls of your favorite trends reveal your love of OTT monograms, covert balaclavas, preppy stripes, and sheer dresses. Google’s most popular searches are similarly random; as my colleague Steff Yotka wrote, the takeaway is that no one is sticking to one look anymore, and “image is everything.”

2022

COUTURE TOOK US TO INFINITY AND BEYOND "Designers channeled both the optimism and the dark side of science fiction narratives. The worlds of sci-fi and couture might not, initially, seem to have much overlap. Except, of course, for the fact that both are rarefied realms with obsessive devotees who gather periodically with Comic Con-level enthusiasm, and where the most minute details are endlessly fixated upon. But that’s where the similarities usually end."

A Foreword . American country music icon Loretta Lynn dedicated an entire song to a metaphor about a pair of boots. Carrie Bradshaw helped make Manolo Blahnik a household name. Would Cinderella have cinched her place as Princess without that fated glass slipper? There's no denying shoes have long played a pivotal role in society and culture. From being a magical mode of transportation between dreams and reality in The Wizard of Oz, cementing their importance in film iconography - to claiming their stake as status symbols like Christian Louboutin's red bottoms, proliferating the outfits of the stylish and elite...the importance culture plays in the design and development of shoes is palpable both on-screen and off.
