Melanie Abrantes Designs creates simple and beautiful objects for the home. We pride ourselves on craftsmanship, the use of unique materials and our product’s quality. we believe that everyday home goods should be effortless, simplistic, and beautiful.
Melanie Abrantes Designs is a Bay Area-based producer of handcrafted, heirloom objects. Founder Melanie Abrantes believes that in order to create something beautiful, you have to get your hands dirty. She founded her company in 2013 when she realized there was a growing American market for handmade goods. Working with a variety of unique materials, Melanie strives to create products of the highest quality that are equally beautiful and functional. Through the technique of lathing, she turns simple pieces of solid wood and cork into one-of-a-kind bowls, vessels, planters and cake stands. Her passion for woodworking comes from the idea that each piece is as unique as the material it is made from. Time in the studio is dedicated to researching, testing and adapting the product to its user, resulting in a simple, yet unique object of the highest quality.
PROCESS
Using a technique known as wood turning, where an object is carved from a rotating block of material, Melanie lathes pieces of wood and cork into one of-a-kind objects.

Bauhaus Coaster + Trivet
This one of a kind tall straight vase is made from a solid piece of hardwood. It is hand turned and carved in our studio in Oakland, CA. Hand finished with mineral oil and beeswax to bring out the rich wood grain. Gorgeous with just a single flower or two, a glass vial is included with purchase for fresh flowers.
These coasters were inspired by the Bauhaus movement in the early 1900’s. They believed in the idea that mass production and individuality could live harmoniously through means of simplistic form and functionality. These geometric shapes embody the Bauhaus design ideology.

Low Cork Planter
Tall Natural Cork Stool
This hand-turned cork planter is designed for a large indoor plants. Cork is naturally porous, making it an ideal material for retaining moisture. Each planter has a shellacked interior and is finished on the outside with a natural beeswax.
This Natural Cork Stool looks beautiful in any modern home. It is made locally in Oakland by Melanie Abrantes Designs. Can be used as a side table as well.

Grapefruit fizz Recipe Ashley Conway from Crafts + Cocktails created a delicious grapefruit and vanilla thyme fizz cocktail that went perfectly with our Mediterranean inspired Summer Soiree rooftop party. Our shoot was inspired by the rooftop culture inherent to city dwelling. When we’re tight for space the rooftop is the communal gathering spot that is beautiful and has endless options for hosting a summer gathering!
Grapefruit Vanilla Thyme Fizz 2 oz gin 1/4 oz + 1 bar spoon St. Germain 2 oz grapefruit 1/2 oz thyme vanilla syrup (recipe below) 1 oz soda water Thyme sprig + grapefruit slice, garnish Create vanilla thyme syrup. Add first 4 ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a glass with ice. Top with soda water + stir to incorporate. Garnish with grapefruit and thyme. Vanilla Thyme Syrup 8 oz water 8 oz sugar 10-12 thyme sprigs 1 vanilla bean, split Combine sugar and water into a pot over medium high. Once sugar dissolves, add thyme and vanilla. Once it begins to simmer, take off the heat and let steep until cool. Once cool remove from heat and double strain into a jar or sealed container. Store for 3 weeks in the fridge.
Bauhaus Metal coaster + Trivet

Sold individually, these coasters can be used separately for a cold beverage or put together as a trivet for your hot servingware. These are water-jet cut in the US and have soft cork bottoms to avoid scratching surfaces.

With succulents and cacti in mind, our hand-turned cork planters are ideal due to their porous quality. Each planter is finished both inside and on the outside with a our natural mineral oil and beeswax mixture. Due to the nature of the material, each planter is unique and one-of-a-kind. Cork is a 100% sustainable material produced from the remnants of the bark of a cork oak tree.
HErb Planting diy With year round summer in San Francisco, everyone is thinking of adding fresh and delicious herbs to their meals! Herb gardens are a city-dwellers dream, and the perfect garden for small kitchens and patios. It’s so much fun to be able to trim your own herbs and add them to any pot on the stove, making it that much more special. All you need is a planter, some soil, sunshine and an herb of your choice!

Start by choosing your planter, it’s best to use one with great drainage. Our Cork Planters are perfect since they are naturally porous and are able to absorb water. First, add soil to the bottom of the pot using a trowel or your hands. We chose organic potting soil from our local hardware store. Decide what kind of herb you want to use. We picked lemon thyme for it’s versatility for cooking! Some other great herbs are basil, rosemary, lavender, oregano, parsley or sage. Remove your plant from its container and loosen the roots, enabling growth. Place your plant inside of your planter, and gently push your plant into the pot. Pour more soil around your plant to fill in any gaps, filling the planter with soil to the rim. Tah-dah! You’re done! Make sure to place your new herb garden in a well lit place. They love abundant sunshine! Now you can easily snip a couple of pieces off of your plant when you’re making your favorite recipe, or garnish! Enjoy!
