Normanton Trophy Service to Kapa Haka Performance and Promotion of Te Reo Māori in Years 7-8 Intermediate La Sallian Cup presented to a Yr 7 or 8 student who demonstrates sound spiritual values in his own life and commits himself to sharing the Lasallian mission of faith, service and concern for others.

John Whyte Cup for General Excellence in Years 7 & 8 The recipient of this award must consistently display the Lasallian qualities encouraged by the Intermediate Department. He must also have gone the extra mile in the academic, sporting, cultural and spiritual side of college life. He needs to defy any odds to be the best that he can be, not only in school, but also in the community. In a nutshell this student clearly shows all the traits of a Good College Man The Junior Cultural Cup This is presented to a student who has represented the College this year at the Manu Korero Speech competition.

The Junior Lasallian Award This award is presented to a Yr 9 or 10 student who demonstrates sound spiritual values in his own life and commits himself to sharing the Lasallian mission of faith, service and concern for others.

The John George Cup for Junior Sportsman - This is awarded to the student demonstrating all round excellence in sport.

The Jonathan Milne Cup for Junior Leadership This award recognises the recipient’s ability to lead his peers by his example and to show the qualities needed to help develop and foster leadership within the College.

The Junior Literacy Award This award is given to the student who shows a flair for writing, both formal and creative, and who has an outstanding knowledge of literature.

The Mary and Mark Williams Trophy for Music Awarded to a promising young musician.

Shell Todd Oil Services Trophy for Junior Science (First Equal) Awarded to an outstanding student or students who have achieved success over several years in Science competitions and activities both within and outside of the College, including the Taranaki Science Fair, the Kiwi Science Quiz and the Taranaki E Pro 8 Engineering Challenge.

Special Character Corner

On Sunday 3rd December we enter the Season of Advent.

This is the beginning of our Church year. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ's second coming at the end of time and to the anniversary of Our Lord's birth on Christmas. From the earliest days of the Church, people have been fascinated by Jesus' promise to come back. On each Sunday of these four weeks another candle is lit until all four candles are brightly shining on the last Sunday before Advent. This year the fourth Sunday of Advent is Christmas Eve. There is a meaning behind each candle which is listed below.

The candles for the first, second and fourth Sundays are purple while the third candle, lit on Gaudete Sunday, is pink.

Every child deserves a safe start in life…. and a toy for Christmas!

With your help we can give the children of Khushpur exactly that this Christmas!

The De La Salle Brothers conduct the National Catechist Training Centre (NCTC) in Khushpur, Pakistan. In Urdu, the native language of the Pakistani people, 'Khush' means happy and 'pur' means land.

In English, this would suggest that the NCTC is located in ''Happy Land''.

However, the realities are far from that!

Over the coming weeks as we prepare for our family Christmas gatherings take some time each week to reflect on the joy and wonder of this event. The coming of Jesus Christ, our Saviour, not as a ruler but as a little baby, born in a humble stable, vulnerable and dependent.

The first Christmas was not busy or expensive. It was simple and full of love. May your Christmas this year be filled with the peace and love of Christ.

The Creche at the National Catechist Training Centre, Khushpur, Pakistan seeks to support the children of the families who have moved to Khushpur to be trained as catechists. These families have made the decision to support the mission of the Catholic Church in Pakistan, but their children need our help to flourish.

The Creche which provides care for the children is very basic, they have very limited supplies of toys, educational resources, and necessities such nappies, refrigeration to keep milk and food cold, and play equipment including books and toys.

All children have the right to be safe, to be cared for in environments which are good for them, and which ensure that are not only safe but healthy.

Together, this Christmas, we can make this happen and enable our Lasallian ministry in Khushpur to create and sustain a vibrant and safe place for the young children there.

“With No Regrets" Important announcement. The School production for 2024 is….. Drumroll please…..

Performance dates: May 6 - 11, at The New Plymouth Repertory Society.

Auditions will be in Week 2 of Term 1, 2024. Auditions are open for all year levels.You will need to be available on Sunday afternoons and the second week of the Term 1 school holidays for rehearsals. More information to follow in the first week back of school.

TSSSA Junior Social Volleyball The last TSSSA event of the year was Junior Social Volleyball, and it proved to be very popular, with fifty students signing up to take part. It is really great to see our students giving their best and trying new sports. Thanks to TSSSA for providing these opportunities and to the senior leadership team at FDMC for allowing us to participate with such large numbers.

Another great year was had by all.

“With No Regrets" Lights, Camera….. Showcase 2023.

It is fast becoming a FDMC Intermediate Department tradition by completing the year with a Showcase and Year 8 Graduation.

‘Slice of Heaven’ was the theme for this year’s show. All boys took to the stage in some shape and form, whether that be singing, acting, dancing, playing an instrument, backstage crew Showcase 2023 or lighting and sound. The results were fantastic.

We had classes retelling the feats of Sir Edmund Hillary through movement and song. The Barrett brothers made an ‘appearance’ and gave us an Irish jig, while reminding us where they all started their rugby playing careers. Tribute. A gameshow took over the stage, with Taika Waitit and Sir Peter Jackson competing for first place. The evening was then rounded off by rounding up some sheep and characters from Murray Ball’s cartoon classic ‘Footrot Flats’. And of course… where would you be without your gumboots! It was an action packed 40 minutes, with the crowd cheering and laughing along.

It was then time to celebrate and recognise the Year 8 class of 2023 by awarding them their graduation certificates and college badges.

Thank you to all involved, staff, and students. It was a great way to see out 2023. Connecting with our community and celebrating our students in the form of performing. What a team! Until next year.

“With No Regrets" TERM FOUR TOUCH This year we had a record 110 students sign up to play in the Term Four Touch Competition held at the Devon Intermediate Fields. This consisted of six intermediate teams and seven junior teams. It has been great to see so many of our students out there having fun.

We also had a record number of boarders sign up this year and a big thanks to all who helped with the transport on Monday evenings.

Congratulations to our year 8 team, who were the Intermediate Grade Winners, and to Flynn Scott, who was awarded team MVP in the final: Riley Haira, Joseph Bradley, Mason Dyett, Jak Lawn, James O’Donnell, Ashton Smith, Flynn Scott, and Lucus Watson.

“With No Regrets" Year 10 Work Experience 2023 We have just finished a very successful careers initiative where 115 of our Year 10 students undertook a work shadowing/ experience placement for three days.

This initiative was to give students a taste of a real work situation.

We have had amazing feedback. A big thank you to parents, students and the employers for making this possible.

“With No Regrets" Yr 9 / 10 Colts Cricket Tournament Recap The annual Napier cricket tournament took place in week 8, with a team of 12 heading across to Hawkes Bay to play four games. As usual our boys were billeted with families from St John’s College. We were part of a tough draw against big cricketing schools but we had some pleasing results.

Day 1 – 50 0ver game v St John’s – Won by 64 runs Batting first we made 162-9 off our 50 overs with captain Lenny Potter (60) and Nathan Fleming (25) the main contributors. We then bowled reasonably well to bowl St. John’s out for 98 with Josh Taylor picking up 5-21 and Lincoln Taylor 4-3.

MVP – 3 Lenny Potter, 2 Joshua Taylor, 1 Lincoln Taylor Day 2 – 50 over game v Tauranga Boys’ College – Lost by 1 wicket Batting first again, but this time on a fresh grass wicket the boys battled from the start on a low and slow wicket. In early trouble at 25-4, Lenny again laid the foundation with a patient 38 off 90 balls. A crucial 8th wicket partnership of 41 between Josh Taylor (22) and Jacob Petrowski (10) enabled the team to get to 118 off their 50 overs.

Tauranga got away to a fast start and were 34-0 before the FDMC fought back taking 6 wickets for 29 runs in the middle overs.

A mini revival from Tauranga got them within 4 runs before we took another couple of wickets. Unfortunately, this was a game where crucial chances were dropped and Tauranga got across the line with the last two batters at the crease. The boys were understandably disappointed but also proud to provide such fight. Wickets takers were Josh Taylor (2-33), Lincoln Taylor (2-15) and Ethan Watson (3-29) MVP – 3 Lenny Potter, 2 Joshua Taylor, 1 Ethan Watson Day 3 – 50 over game v Hastings’ Boys – Won by 7 wickets Deciding to bowl first, FDMC found themselves frustrated with lack of wickets in the first 10 overs with Hastings getting to 35 before a run out had us in the game. 2 more quick wickets fell including the prize wicket of their player for a golden duck who the game previously had scored 125. Chipping away throughout the innings, FDMC managed to bowl Hastings all out for 169 with Lincoln again in the wickets taking 3-23 and Karanbir Walia 3-31.

Asking the boys to be positive in their run chase, Carter Herlihy did just that putting away any loose ball early on. He then went on to bat the entire innings for a 73 not out with Lenny again amongst the runs, this time with 52 and a partnership of 91. A comprehensive win and a professional team effort.

MVP – 3 Carter Herlihy, 2 Lenny Potter, 1 Karanbir Walia Day 4 – T20 v Napier Boys’ – Lost by 65 runs The last game of the tournament is often a carnival with the opportunity to give players a go at different roles. Bowling first again, we were well on top early on having Napier 25-3, but unfortunately couldn’t maintain the pressure allowing Napier to get through to an impressive 159-6 off 20 overs. Nathan Fleming (2-33) and Ethan Watson (2-27) amongst the wickets.

Cricket can be a brutal game and after facing 121 balls the game before, this time Carter faced just 1. It was the start of a collapse that we couldn’t recover from. Some late hitting from Josh Taylor and Nathan (both 17 not out) gave our score some respectability reaching 94-6 off our 20 overs.

MVP – 3 Nathan Fleming, 2 Ethan Watson, 1 Joshua Taylor Overall, the goal across the week was learning and development, and that is exactly what we achieved.

Congratulations to Lenny Potter who was the MVP for the week scoring 160 runs at an average of 40. Also well done to Joshua Taylor and Lincoln Taylor who both took 9 wickets at the tournament. Lastly, Carter Herlihy won himself a new pair of batting gloves courtesy of Luke Tuckett and the Mobile Cricket Club.

Year 9 Ecology Challenge Last term, Year 9 students completed a variety of different student led tasks to create a por9olio of work while studying the main aspects involved in Ecology.

I set them an epic challenge: To make a website aimed at Year 6 students about ‘Ecology’.

They had to uFlize their IT and design skills in conjuncFon with the ecology work they had completed and knowledge they had gained.

Many of these students made their own slide shows, videos, infographics, images and even quizzes, using a variety of applicaFons from Google forms to Canva as well as field work in areas local to them.

Some students researched the features such as games and video clips, that they thought was suitable and wanted to include/ embedded onto their website.

The work that students were able to develop and publish was outstanding.
