I was all dressed up as we sat down, excited to hear the music—the journey—the timelessness of it all. Connecting the past with the moment of now. Beside me was my beautiful wife at the DeVos Performance Hall, on the opening night of our wonderful Grand Rapids Symphony, as we eagerly anticipated the performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. From the opening with the pianissimo horns to the unfolding movements that ultimately culminate in the mighty fortissimo of the Ode to Joy—what a way to launch a season! Sublime and intimate moments that introduced the greatest majesty of Western music; words and music that transcend time and space, past and future. A heartfelt performance that transported us both and so clearly stood the test of time.

As I get older, I feel time moving more quickly—perhaps that is simply human nature. Yet when I look around Meijer Gardens, there is a sense of timelessness. I am reminded of contemporary words inspired by Tennyson: “Though time changes us, much still remains. We may not hold the same strength of earlier days, yet we endure — defined not by what has passed, but by what abides.” Somehow, those words personally resonate with the eternal music of Beethoven, the contemporary artistic voice of Nick Cave, or even the ancient and curated bonsai found in our collection. We may change, but much remains constant: timeless, abiding.

This place, too, is timeless—in its materiality, its architecture, its artwork, its programming, its plantings. All is designed to endure for generations, a testament to the vision and legacy of two timeless souls. It is in that spirit that I thank you for your contributions, your partnership, your attendance, your support. Together, you have helped create and sustain a timeless beacon of what is possible.

And so, at this time of year, I invite you to revisit the words of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. They remain a powerful reminder of the promise of the season, the hope of a new year, and the timeless aspiration for our world: Joy—radiant spark of life, Born of wonder, born of hope.

With fire in our hearts we gather, Stepping into your light.

Your presence makes us kin, Where your gentle spirit rests, Every stranger becomes a brother, Every distance falls away.

Embrace one another, all you millions!

This is love’s great gift to the world.

Meet Our New Board of Directors Chairperson: Tim Liang Tim Liang, Managing Director of the consultancy AlphaMax Advisors, leverages cross-cultural expertise to help clients achieve business goals in North America and Asia. His volunteer leadership spans the arts, education,

and civic life. Tim serves as Vice Chair of the Grand Rapids Symphony, President of the Yale Club of Western Michigan and Northern Indiana, and on the Investment Committee of the Grand Rapids–based New Community Transformation Fund.

His past service includes director of the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan, board and executive

committee member of the Economic Club of Grand Rapids, and trustee of both the Oberlin Shansi Association and the Yale-China Association. Tim earned his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and graduate degrees from Yale University in East Asian Studies, Chinese Archaeology, and Public & Private Management. He and his wife Ping live in Ada and have been members of Meijer Gardens since 2008.

Together, they’ve created the 90-minute, high-impact ENLIGHTEN spectacle that transforms the grounds into a living canvas of light, media and artistry. “More than a mere ‘boxed’ light show, we’ve created a bespoke and elevated exhibition that’s site-specific: It can only exist here,” says Lightswitch Principal John Featherstone. “ENLIGHTEN embodies the Meijer Gardens commitment to art, culture, nature and community.

“It’s an immersive experience that leans into the ethos of the organization, while providing a fresh look through the lens of light.”

STORYTELLING THROUGH LIGHT The Sculpture Park setting presents Lightswitch and Upstaging a rare opportunity to reinterpret world-renowned art through the storytelling of light. One thousand LED light sources, thousands more lighting units and lasers, seemingly endless rolls of LED tape, and unprecedented technical choreography together weave a luminous tale, throughout Meijer Gardens.

“In the past, lighting at Meijer Gardens has been functional more than celebratory,” adds Featherstone. “It was an honor to be able to shed new light—literally­—on the art and present it in a way that’s less familiar. By inviting you into the Sculpture Park after dark, when it’s usually closed, ENLIGHTEN engages you in a new conversation with this world-class collection.”

Among the highlights, Nina Akamu’s landmark The American Horse takes on a life of its own. Surrounded by magical, shimmering, colorful orbs and radiant light, this beloved bronze monument is transformed—cast in an entirely new glow.

BREAK OUT THE FESTIVITIES! Your ENLIGHTEN experience begins at the Frederik Meijer Garden Amphitheater Plaza and adjacent Eileen DeVries Concessions Center, where a wealth of merchandise and an expanded glow gear selection will help you light up the night.

The inviting space that beckons as you arrive is our cozy and welcoming Beer Garden. The holiday spirit comes alive here, with carefully chosen music, ample tents and space for gathering, and a host of tasty temptations to kick off your adventure—including a bar with festive spirits. It all starts here!

INSPIRED BY MUSIC Music adds another dimension to ENLIGHTEN. As you traverse the 1-mile path, notice how sculptures inspired by music are amplified by interactive light installations that enhance the visual experience.

Stunning arrangements await in the Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater and at the Waterfall, where choreographed compositions become sensory spectacles of sweeping lasers and stationery and moving light, married to symphonic arrangements in beautiful convergences of art, technology, and sound.

Of note is Aria by Alexander Liberman, where a sculptural metal keyboard lets you “play” the art like an instrument—triggering light and single notes with every touch. “It’s a polyphonic station that allows you to curate a piece of music by combining the various buttons,” Featherstone explains. “It invites play and exploration that’s focused not only on light but also on music honoring the name of the piece: Aria.”

The neighboring Neuron, by Roxy Paine, pulses with life through internally lit LED pieces resembling a mitten and a snowflake.

The magic of field effect technology allows you to control the light as you raise and lower your hands over the sensors— manipulating color, intensity, and shadows on the sculpture as you become part of the artwork. Music and light, intertwined.

TAKE A BREAK Enhancements throughout the ENLIGHTEN experience include specially selected food and beverages, tents with tables and chairs, firepits to fend off the chill, and rest stops and restrooms for your convenience, comfort, and joy. A true hot spot awaits near Scarlatti, where you’ll find cozy warming tent and Meijer Gardens’ own food trailer will offer a variety of snacks and sips for purchase.

SURPRISE AND DELIGHT—AND MORE! “We love a surprise—and the Amphitheater has one this year!

The main stage headliner is now Glacial Light by HYBYCOZO,” Featherstone notes. “Light emanates from the four 10-to-13foot laser-cut cubes onto the band shell to create luminous, playful patterns of light and shadow. The interplay of light, lasers and rushing water at the Waterfall is equally spectacular.

Both are showstoppers.”

The evening doesn’t end with the lights. Warm up with festive food, seasonal cocktails, and hot cocoa by glowing fire pits, or take home a memento from the glow merchandise pop-up. Your visit concludes with the beloved University of Michigan Health–West: Christmas & Holiday Traditions exhibition, where cultural displays and more than 350,000 lights bring global holiday traditions to life.

IMAGINING SPRINGTIME In the Doehne Wildflower Meadow, ENLIGHTEN continues to unfold. Mark di Suvero’s Scarlatti—named after Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti and featuring a whimsical celebration of flora and fauna—is a steely, stately canvas for thousands of points of light, imagining springtime in the heart of winter. Ways to Say Goodbye, by Ariel Schlesinger, is ensconced in LED lights evocative of grasses in other seasons—a poignant pause speaking to the duality of joy and loss during the holidays.

“Just as each sculpture is distinctive, each light installation is its own ‘room’ inside the overall experience that responds naturally to the unique aesthetic of that particular piece of art,” Featherstone notes.

“In many ways, ENLIGHTEN is a symphony composed of different movements that capture the organic diversity of Meijer Gardens.”

The Art of HYBYCOZO Meijer Gardens is a natural home for the art of internationally renowned HYBYCOZO, the collaborative studio created by artists Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu. The studio name— Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone— reflects the duo’s interest in exploring the intersection of art and technology.

Light comes in many forms, and through HYBYCOZO’s large-scale sculpture it radiates myriad patterns. Drawing inspiration from science, mathematics and natural structures, Filipchuk and Beaulieu have created engaging lightfilled works around the globe, from Turkey, Dubai, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil to Canada and throughout the United States.

The Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater comes alive this season with the magic of HYBYCOZO’s Glacial Light, which graces the main stage with striking shapes and shadows, inspired by the interplay of light emanating from ice crystals. The installation comprises five reflective stainless steel structures with irregularly stacked cubes—a central 13-foot-high structure accompanied by 10-foot-high elements. Through their signature laser cutting technique, the artists explore the literal and figurative nature of light and how it refracts in unexpected, mesmerizing patterns through ice and water.

“When people interact with Glacial Light during the day, they will see their mirrored image, as if they are part of the sculpture. At night, they will see light reflected onto the snowy canvas, as a reminder that your light within emanates outward to impact the world—especially in this season of gratitude and kindness,” Filipchuk notes.

University of Michigan Health–West: Christmas & Holiday Traditions

present—each honoring the rich tapestry of traditions that bring meaning, connection, and joy to families around the world.

Now in its 31st year, this eclectic event evokes the wonder of winter with a palette awash in cool blues, silvery whites, deep greens and icy finishes. As you enter the exhibition, notice the kadomatsu, or gate pine, gracing the PNC Portico. In keeping with Japanese tradition, these regal planters flank the outside entry to welcome ancestral spirits, invite the divinities to bring prosperity, and guard against evil spirits in anticipation of the Japanese New Year.

November 24, 2025– January 3, 2026 It’s the season of celebration—and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is beautifully decked out to welcome you and yours. Our annual University of Michigan Health–West: Christmas & Holiday Traditions provides a wonderful finale to this year’s dazzling ENLIGHTEN experience as well as a delightful show of trees and cultural displays during any seasonal visit.

CELEBRATING TRADITION, CULTURE AND CONNECTION A hallmark of Meijer Gardens’ holiday festivities is our iconic University of Michigan Health–West: Christmas & Holiday Traditions. The exhibition that began with a modest 20 decorated trees has grown into 42 cultural displays depicting fact and folklore, past and 9

projection mapping overhead, emulating the aurora borealis; three evergreens decorated for winter; and the seasonal placement of Mom, Dad, and the Kid by artist Shirley Thompson-Smith. A favorite of Lena Meijer and members alike, this charming sculpture depicts a penguin family enjoying a moment of togetherness. We invite you to snap a family picture of your own. When you join us Tuesday evenings, you could get a photo with Santa Claus, too.

GRACING THE GREAT INDOORS The BISSELL Corridor and Gunberg Corridor are finely dressed in evergreens, poinsettias, and amaryllis, wrapping you in a warm embrace while you take in dozens of adorned trees and cultural displays. As you wander, stop by the Hoffman Family Auditorium to enjoy the short film joy, featuring Lena Meijer and her childhood friends decorating the Germany tree and celebrating centuries-old family traditions.

And don’t miss a special winter dessert in the James & Shirley Balk Café.

SEASON’S GREETINGS The Cook Entryway greets you with a larger-than-life arrangement of dried botanicals, many of them collected from our own conservatories throughout autumn, along with hanging baskets of poinsettias and winter foliage.

The Welcome Center is another festive focal point, home to several delightful displays spreading even more holiday cheer!

The Garden Pavilion springs to life with

The Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory captivates with its statuesque, elegant 15-foot-tall poinsettia tree composed of 345 individual plants. The Railway

Garden, meandering through the Grace Jarecki Seasonal Display Greenhouse, is another must-see. Trains and cargo cars are regularly rotated, so there’s always something different—look for four new additions, proudly carrying the Meijer Gardens logo.

Enjoy an evening complete with a private cocktail hour, strolling dinner, signature drinks, and festive music soundtrack—and a surprise artist in the Huizenga Grand Room.

Help us kick off the season! Enjoy our annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony—and a first visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus—on November 25. The jolly old elf visits the Garden Pavilion, in addition to an evening of cultural music in the BISSELL Corridor, on Tuesdays, December 2, 9 and 16. On Saturdays, November 29 and December 6, 13, and 20, bring the whole family for educational events complementing that week’s music. Then bundle up and venture out to Michigan’s Farm Garden to meet Santa inside the barn, pose for a sleigh photo, and meet his reindeer. Peek inside the windows of the three-quarter-scale replica of Lena Meijer’s 1880s childhood farmhouse to see a tree decorated with handmade ornaments, lovingly crafted

by Lena and her friends.

This season, the Garden Pavilion in our Welcome Center is reimagined as a wintry wonderland, ideal for capturing your bespoke holiday memory. Nordic trees, festively decorated in partnership with Flowerland, set the scene along with the beloved penguin sculpture Mom, Dad, and the Kid, honoring Lena Meijer and her love for the natural world.

In vibrant Nordic spirit, cool Illuminated seating, ethereal aurora borealis projection mapping, and lush holiday plantings invite you to become immersed in a stunning holiday tradition. Catching the eye throughout the season, this magical, heartwarming scene hosts Santa and Mrs. Claus on Tuesdays, December 2, 9, and 16, from 5–8 pm.

A Vital Sculpture Landscape The sculpture collection at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park continues to grow and diversify, adding vitality to the living environment. To mark our 30th anniversary, we celebrate the siting of six exceptional new works throughout the campus, inside and out. Acquired through both purchase and as gifts, these sculptures bring freshness and delight to our shared aesthetic landscape.

Nick Cave Nick Cave’s first monumental bronze, Amalgam (Origin) evolved from the artist’s iconic Soundsuits, densely material works that conceal the wearer’s identity and force us to look without judgement. As with Cave’s wearable suits, Amalgam (Origin) is based on his own body, in this case merged with a crown of branches and bedecked with various bird figurines. Like a migratory hub or community beacon, the sculpture signifies our unique individuality, while also suggesting our common ground in nature. Amalgam (Origin) is sited on the North Path near The Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden.

Magdalena Abakanowicz Much like Magdalena Abakanowicz’s Figure on a Trunk, sited outdoors in our Sculpture Park, the artist’s Seated Child conveys a mix of strength and vulnerability.

Through minimalist yet expressive handling of the figure, Abakanowicz ably suggests the toll life can take on our bodies, an awareness shaped by the artist’s memories of living through World War II. Seated Child is currently installed indoors, in the stairwell at the end of the Gunberg Corridor near our Sculpture Galleries.

Airport in Washington, DC, titled View of the Earth from Space. Creating it in the era of early space exploration, Bertoia used the innovative technique of bronze spill casting, pouring and manipulating molten metal in a shallow frame to suggest a cratered and mottled planetary surface. Untitled is sited indoors on the lower level, in the Covenant Learning Center.

Boaz Vaadia Boaz Vaadia created layered sculptures by hand-carving and stacking slabs of slate and bluestone. Inspired by the natural formation of sedimentary rock, Vaadia saw geological layering as both a sculptural method and a metaphor for human memory and experience. Yizhaq & Eli'av is a bronze casting of one such work, translating the weight and texture of stone into a durable outdoor form, and merging the figures with their landscape. Ursula von Rydingsvard Bronze Bowl with Lace is an exceptional work in Ursula von Rydingsvard’s celebrated career. Notable for its monumental scale, perforated lace border, and interior lighting component, the 20-foot sculpture merges raw materiality with lyrical form. Initially formed in cedar before being cast in bronze, the result is a richly varied topography that gains further interest through the use of multihued patinas. Both regal and refined, this sculpture has been given the apt nickname “Princess” by von Rydingsvard.

There are countless ways to engage with art exhibitions at Meijer Gardens—and research shows that exploring art strengthens creativity, problem-solving and empathy.

Last summer, Amber Oudsema, Curator of Art Interpretation and Engagement, joined museum educators from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and The Museum of Modern Art to learn about best practices in museum learning. Inspired by this experience, we’ve expanded our approaches, welcoming children and adults alike to a world of meaningful art encounters.

LEARNING LABS School groups have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Jaume Plensa’s art in our Learning Lab. This engaging hands-on exploration of materials, themes and expressions takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes.

Interactive themes based on the artist’s works include Language, Introspection, Nonverbal Communication (the human form) and Collective Identity.

Following MoMA’s example, select artworks and galleries now feature wall texts written for a fourthgrade reading level. Placed lower on the wall, these labels pose reflective questions to encourage close looking and personal interpretation.

Inside the Orchid Orchids have long been symbols of luxury and mystery. In Victorian-era paintings, they often epitomized exoticism and sensuality, reflecting the fascination of the time with rare and mysterious plants, collected from far-off lands.

Beyond their beauty, orchids also fuse art and science. During the “orchidelirium” craze of the 18th and 19th centuries, botanical orchid illustrations were considered lovely and scientifically precise.

As such, these artworks helped botanists classify thousands of new species.

Decades and decades later, orchids remain a modern muse. Georgia O’Keeffe and other Contemporary masters used orchids to explore abstract forms and emotional depth, turning the flower into a powerful symbol of femininity and introspection.

Presented by the Grand Valley Orchid Society, this perennially popular showcase turns the Welcome Center, Garden Pavilion, and Gordon Food Service Corridor near the DeVos–Keeler Gift Shop into a stunning sight as orchid clubs from across Michigan exhibit their enchanting displays.

A TRADITION OF BEAUTY Founded in 1998 and accredited through the American Orchid Society, the Orchid Show is one of the oldest plant shows hosted at Meijer Gardens. As you plan your visit, pencil in time for our expansive orchid collection in the Earl & Donnalee Holton Victorian Garden Parlor.

The Heart of the Holidays ‘Tis the season when people across the globe celebrate their holiday traditions. It’s also the season when we take a nostalgic look back and honor the gifts and memory of Lena Meijer, who inspired and lent her talents to our initial Christmas Around the World exhibition in 1995—mere months after Meijer Gardens opened to the public. Today, amidst a magnificent forest of elevated trees, Lena’s beloved Germany Tree among them, we fondly embrace the past as we thank those spreading the joy of our individual holiday trees and other displays.
