A YEAR OF CHANGE, A YEAR OF GROWTH There are many ways to measure success. Statistics, charts, facts and figures are usually employed to illustrate specific point—and we use them, too. Once again, the Board, the staff, and the volunteers of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park share a variety of extremely vibrant measures of success, much of which is presented in this annual report. However, there is another deeply meaningful measure that I have come to appreciate over the years in my different leadership roles: the people factor. The diverse tapestry of children and adults, students and tourists, long-time members and first-time visitors—from across the country and around the world—combines to create one of the most engaging cultural organizations one could hope to find. In fiscal year 2016, we welcomed more than 750,000 visitors; for the second time, and were once again noted as among the 100 most-visited museums in the world, a remarkable accomplishment for such a young institution. On a personal note, however, I would like to share the great joy I feel when I regularly walk through the building, attend a concert, visit the galleries or stroll through our gardens and see so many people of different ages and abilities, backgrounds and ethnicities, truly connecting with our mission. I know of no graphs or diagrams that could possibly measure the joy of discovery and variety of meaningful experiences our members and guests enjoy nearly every day of the year at Meijer Gardens. Certainly, our collections and exhibitions, programs and events beckon people to visit, but there is a prevailing spiritof openness and hospitality that greets them the moment they enter.

I believe that much of that spirit emanates from the love of Fred and Lena Meijer, and by extension, their love of others. Certainly, Fred’s love of sculpture and Lena’s love of gardens and plants gave us our mission, but their commitment to sharing sculpture and horticulture with everyone, regardless of background or experience, is the spirit that allows Meijer Gardens to thrive beyond all our greatest expectations. It inspires our donors at every level. Our membership is dedicated and loyal. Groups like our Botanic and Sculpture Societies, our annual fund donors and our members are deeply committed to our mission. Events like the Great Gardens Party and the Christmas Cabaret are more than significant fundraisers—they are unique celebrations of our mission. In addition to a very hard-working professional staff and devoted Board of Directors, I must recognize our beloved volunteers who support us in countless ways nearly every day of the year. The gift of their time and talent shines brightly in all we do. They are a critical part of the people factor in their own right but, beyond that, they reach and embrace countless members and guests at Meijer Gardens—which makes their vital influence on the organization something that simply cannot be measured. Our gardens are a year-round destination for delight, from spring blossoms and butterflies to the summer debut of the Japanese Garden to chrysanthemums and a winter wonderland of holiday traditions. GRACE F. JARECKI SEASONAL DISPLAY GREENHOUSE
HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
In 2016 the Grace Jarecki Seasonal Display Greenhouse, was newly refurbished. The 800-square-foot expansion includes upgraded aesthetics like mirrors, lighting, and brick flooring, as well as mechanical improvements including more efficient ventilation and automatic shade curtains. These energy savers are critical to our environmental control system, enhancing plant health and conserving both energy and financial resources. All of these incredible improvements are made possible by the generosity of our members, donors and volunteers—thank you.
The enchanting Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World drew more than 79,500 visitors to experience 42 cultural displays depicting fact and folklore, alongside statuesque Michigan-grown evergreens adorned and aglow with 300,000 lights, indoors and out. More highlights included three displays marking the Vietnamese New Year, the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr and a 14’ Moravian Star illuminating the waterfall in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory.
BUTTERFLIES ARE BLOOMING Our most popular annual horticulture exhibition took a new name this year: Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies are Blooming. During March and April, more than 177,000 visitors came to see our more than 7,000 tropical butterflies take flight in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. This beloved exhibition also included an educational display of Michigan native Monarch caterpillars in the Grace F. Jarecki Seasonal Display Greenhouse, family activities in the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden and community events like Night of the Butterflies.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS The Lena Meijer Children’s Garden offered kid-friendly plantings chosen for their appeal to the senses. Members and guests alike enjoyed special events like the Orchid Show and Michigan All-State Bonsai Show, and our expert horticulturalists even gave presentations at the West Michigan Home and Garden Show.
CHRYSANTHEMUMS AND MORE! A sensory feast of color and culture, the popular Chrysanthemums and More! exhibition welcomed more than 96,000 guests. Thousands of chrysanthemums featured larger-thanlife blooms, indoors and out, along with cabbage, kale and other autumn vegetables. Events like Sunday Mum Day drew families to enjoy interactive activities, tours, demonstrations and visits with our resident horticulturalists.

Our sculpture programs and exhibitions are central to the mission of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. MIMMO PALADINO: PRESENT INTO PAST
ALMOST HOME: GRAND RAPIDS IN FOCUS

This exhibition, the artist’s first in the United States in more than a decade, presented sculptures from across the artist’s repertoire as well as new, never-before-seen work. In addition to objects presented in the galleries, an installation in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory and a daily screening of Paladino’s award-winning film, Don Quixote in the Hoffmann Family Auditorium, the permanent installation of the iconic sculpture Tana resides in the Sculpture Park, a gift of Fred and Lena Meijer. As sculptor, painter, printmaker, installation artist and filmmaker, Mimmo Paladino has captured widespread critical acclaim and popular appeal with exhibitions and projects across Europe, the Americas and Asia. Born in the southern Italian city of Paduli (near Benevento) in 1948, where he continues to work and live, Paladino first came to international prominence in the 1980s for the expressive and creative power of his figurative work. Italian sculptor, painter and graphic artist Mimmo Paladino is among the innovative artists responsible for the revival of

This exhibition invited representatives of both traditions to reflect on their experiences with and observations of this community as the conceptual foundation of new work. Cultural, social, environmental and aesthetic reflections on or inspirations from a place some have moved to and others have moved from helped connect a diverse number of works in a variety of materials, installations and forms. Gathered together, they provided a current framework for a place that for many was almost home. During the ArtPrize® timeframe, this exhibition benefitted from increased exposure as Meijer Gardens one again served as ArtPrize Exhibition Venue.

Lecture: Michelangelo to Paladino: Figure and Form in Italian Sculpture Sunday, April 17, 2 pm Italian art offers one of the richest and most in-depth traditions in the history of art. This lecture examines Mimmo Paladino’s critical role in the ongoing development of the figurative tradition that stretches from the Classical Period through the Renaissance and continuing to the present day.

Mimmo Paladino’s art is grounded in a distant Mediterranean past, yet it is provocative and thoroughly modern. His use of symbol and metaphor asks questions of our various states of consciousness. This lecture will place Paladino’s work within a larger tradition of art that focuses on memory, dreams and nostalgia, while highlighting the work of Caspar David Friedrich and Antony Gormley, among others.
Sculpture Walk and Talk Join working artists and art historians on a walking tour of the sculpture of Mimmo Paladino and selected artwork in the Sculpture Park. Enjoy their distinctive views and insights into the artistic process, historical context, and interpretation. This program begins in the exhibition galleries and continues out of doors. Our extensive education programs touched the lives of a wide variety of guests. PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS
PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS
Lifelong learners make up an important audience for us. For them we presented four lectures as part of the Master Lecture Series—the Great Authors Lecture given by Geoff Dyer, the Sculpture Lecture given by Jenny Holzer, the Wege Environmental Lecture given by Daniel Janzen and the Secchia Garden Lecture given by Kendall Brown, each one generating great interest and huge attendance. We also offered six successful day-long bus trips, nine plant shows including the Michigan All-State Bonsai Show, several popular photography workshops, dozens of gardening classes taught by seasoned professionals, and public programs for the Tradition and Innovation: Japanese Ceramics Now and Mimmo Paladino: Present into Past sculpture exhibitions.
Programs for schools always draw thousands of participants. This year offerings included 90-minute curriculum-related programs such as The Art & Science of Observation, Fitness Fun in the Sculpture Park, Wild About Wetlands, Michigan Tree Expedition and ABCs of Life on the Farm, among others. Guided tours also inspired many teachers to bring students to experience our permanent collections and changing exhibitions. These options included Beyond Bronze, Big Picture, Sculpture Park, Surviving the Tropics, Holiday Traditions Around the World, and Japanese Garden. And hands-on classroom activities that connect directly to the tours have become increasingly popular. Examples from this program category include What’s My Line: A Plant Parts Mystery Bag, Butterfly Basics: Wing It, and My Inner Artist: Mark di Suvero. This year’s revenue from programs for schools was $164,645.00.
PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Programs for children and families address various ages, developmental stages, interests and learning styles. This audience enjoyed dozens of guided spring and summer nature walks, Kids’ Tram tours focused on imagination in the Sculpture Park, activity-packed themed weekends at the Farm Garden, and a summer filled with special guest presentations in the Children’s Garden. Families participated in our Animals Adventures collaboration with John Ball Zoo, our Who Am I butterfly ballet collaboration with Grand Rapids Ballet, our interactive Cozy Tales for Winter Days story-time presentations, and year two of Tranquility Zone: A Japanese Garden Environment for Families. Waiting lists for virtually all of our summer camps as well as our Grandma & Me classes indicate great popularity and excitement about these offerings.
