the short Hello, I’m Megumi Call, a Bachelor of Architecture and MBA candidate at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I’m passionate about sustainable building, and I love amalgamating all-things technology into architectural design. From the 2030 Plan to the growing development in smart-building technology, it’s evident that a building-industry boom is on the horizon. I’m thrilled to play a role in furthering architectural innovation!

The Long My first experience with architecture was building a classroom for a school in rural Jamaica in 2015. A couple of years later, when Cheney High School was being renovated, I had the opportunity to shadow the architects. By this point, not only had I witnessed how architectural design beautifully merges engineering with art and design, I had also experienced first-hand how architecture changes lives.

I’ve been pursuing a career as an architect ever since. I find the responsibility and creative challenges of designing architecture for next generations and forthcoming technology extremely invigorating.

I’ve expanded my education beyond my B. ARCH to include multidisciplinary pursuits, such as learning about computer networking through Cisco Networking Academy or working on an energy validation project with Carmel Software. When I’m not learning or working, I can be found hiking in the summer, skiing in the winter, and playing rugby year-round.

01 Integrated Design Development Professor: Jillian Crandall

The Web the short The Web is a programmatical, virtual, and structural delineation of web-like connectivity.

The Long The Web interconnects the community with its diverse program of art spaces, a children’s science center, offices, and restaurants. Additionally, its full-service bike shop is located directly across the Mohawk-Hudson bike path. The Web mitigates the all-too-common issue of spotty internet connection with synergic design between architecture and computer infrastructure. The materials, program layout, and building circulation were all considered for optimizing the network connection: reducing computer hardware and increasing energy efficiency. The triangulated UHPC atrium structure and exoskeleton reduces the number of interior columns, saving building materials and giving The Web its iconic appearance.

02 Architectural Design Studio 4 Professor: David Bell

HUDSON RIVER COMPLEX the short This apartment complex has community-accessible amenities, including a public library.

The Long The Hudson River Complex is located along the Hudson riverfront in Troy, NY. The complex contains over 50 apartment units along with a pool and gym for residents. In addition to residential space, there is a four-story library, theatre, art gallery, and cafe shared between residents and the community. The circulation for residents and community members merge at two intersections across F1-F4, but otherwise stay separate. The circulation carefully orchestrates the relationship between private and public space, creating a sense of community while maintaining security. The chimerical concrete landscape merges the building exterior down to the water, while also physically connecting the fabric of Troy with the Hudson.

03 Architectural Design Studio 1 Professor: Anthony Titus

SLIDING PLANES the short Interpretive 3D structure inspired by Paul Klee’s Crystal Gradation .

The Long The forefront shapes in Paul Klee’s Crystal Gradation have distinct edges, and faded copies of their shapes extend outward and intersect with adjacent geometries. Sliding Planes, a threedimensional reimagination of Paul Klee’s Crystal Gradation is constructed with considerations to both the static and rippling geometric relationships depicted in the painting. The forefront shapes are represented in Sliding Planes by static, three-dimensional intersections. The faded, overlapping geometries are represented by the intersecting planes that move throughout the structure, adding an element of fluidity to the otherwise rigid frame.

04 Architectural Design Studio 3 Professor: Stephano Passeri

AEOLIAN GRADATION the short Reconstructed sculpture inspired from the work of Eduardo Chillida: Our Father’s House.

3D printed eight-inch cubic sculpture with timer-controlled LED strips.

The Long The wind traverses through the yawning gap of Chillida’s Our Father’s House in elegant arabesque; its jigsaw-like shape makes one imagine what may have become of the fictional “missing piece”. Perhaps it was eroded by the wind, its fragments collecting and clustering in a far-off place, creating a subsidiary stone-like structure with gaps, grooves, and wind-polished swirls of its own. Just as the middle gap is the focal point of Chillida’s sculpture, the striated cuts in the center of Aeolian Gradation draw the eye to its enigmatic, successively colorshifting center.

05 Digital Constructs 1 Professor: Adam Dayem

CUBIC SUPERIMPOSITION the short Superimpositions made using Rhino 3D, Python, and Photoshop.

The Long Studies with perspective cuts, axonometric projection, and exploring how lighting comes into play led to producing these relationships in one image. The original cubes from the studies were placed on a planar surface and were then triangulated and extruded using a Python script. The effects of moving light in a 24hr solar path were captured. The colors and shadows produced were deconstructed and superimposed to create the final image.

06 Digital Constructs 4 Professor: Adam Dayem

PARAMETRIC PARASITES the short An exploration of designing solely with Grasshopper 3D code, using mathematical conditions to create base structures and relational geometries.

The Long These futuristic towers coexist with parasitic attachments. The parasites utilize the structural pipes that wrap around the tower as a sturdy base to grow off of. Despite the slenderness of the horizontal planes, the pipes allow enough stability for clusters to form. New forming voronoi tend to germinate as close to the centroid of their given base shape as possible, and voronoi clusters often form in the median sections of the towers. This, coupled with the fact that the voronoi are more likely to grow in crevices and on horizontal planes than on vertical surfaces, creates the effect of the structure being eaten away.

07 SCHEMA SERVER the short I worked with a team of members from Carmel Software Corporation, CASE, and RPI to develop Schema Server, a SaaS platform that validates building energy performance. I personally assisted with writing the SBIR U.S. Dept. of Energy Phase II grant proposal, designing graphics, and analyzing product SWOT (Strengths. Weaknesses. Opportunities. Threats).

The Long The need for accurate building energy validation has increased in parallel with the rise of standards surrounding building energy use and growing needs for cost and energy-saving plans. Schema Server optimizes the current workflows for professionals who seek to obtain a performance analysis based on certain building and energy criteria. Schema Server is a web portal with API capabilities and is interoperable with BIM software. It performs validation using Schematron technology and allows for metered data to be imported.

Additionally, Schema Server packages data for consuming software, such as ASHRAE Building EQ, to retrieve a building energy benchmarking score.
