The Whirl

Type : Hotel Design

Project Type : 6th Sem Academic Work

Location : Ernakulam, Kerala

The goal of this project is to provide tourists and visitors to Ernakulam, Kochi, with a luxurious experience and accommodation. The site is located in the Marine Drive potential urban development area, making it an important hub. It is a three-star luxurious hotel with amenities such as a VIP lounge, a minitheatre, a banquet hall, a restaurant, a conference hall, suites, a swimming pool, and a roof top cafe.

The concept is also to provide a futuristic form that inspires, as well as to incorporate Kerala architectural elements, so that tourists can experience Kerala homes within the hotel.

To achieve sustainability, technologies such as biophotovoltaic cells and rain gardens have been incorporated into the design.

Bird’s eye view of the Whirl

Total Area - 8142 sqm

Total Ground Coverage - 2500 sqm (30%) Rain garden - 1745 sqm Hotel Garden - 585 sqm

The form has been inspired by the traditional kerala roof form swirling in the form of an inverted whirlpool symbolically adhering to the lake.

The swirl helps the structure aerodynamically and lets the wind from west flow within the structure.

This allows natural ventilation to flow through the whole structure. The building is proposed to be 40 m from the coastal end of the site.

Site Plan with Ground Flooor

Building Envelope

Building Envelope is a diagrid structure. It consists of tubular steel sections and reflective glass with solar controlling low-e coating. Thus reflecting incoming radiant heat energy and making use of HVAC less.

It reduces glare from the sun and eliminates the need for blinds and other window coverings. It is beneficial in this context as winters in Kerala are not crucial.

Landscaping makes use of rain garden that helps in re-energizing the natural water table and the slope of the structure helps in collecting some rainwater to the rainwater harvesting tank to be used later.

Biophotovoltic cells have been used in balcony infront of the guest rooms & conference halls so that they can help in production of electricity for those areas. These plants can also be used to regulate cool air through out the structure reducing the overall heat gain and using less of ACs.

The Whirl has 3 types of rooms : single suite rooms, deluxe suite rooms and dormitory room.

The interiors have been inspired by the kerala architecture with use of timber in furniture and beams to give a modern traditional keralan home atmosphere.

EA Headquarters

Type : Office Building

Project Type : 7th Sem Academic Work

Location : Nehru Place, Delhi

A multi storey office headquarters have been proposed for EA Inc. in the IT hub of Delhi, Nehru Place. It has been designed such that it allows more collaboration and creative environment with a much needed work - nature relationship. Plenty of Direct and Indirect light helps illuminate even the much interior areas thus promoting productivity. It has many green spaces and uses passive design strategies along with water harvesting techniques.

It makes use of Kinetic Facade for better optimization of daylight through the area. The form have been inspired by evolution of Electronic Arts Logo through.

This Form integrates in the surrounding but also does not overwhelms the skyline of nehru place and the on lookers that pass by. It provides least radiation and more indirect north light to the interior of the spaces. The shadows casted by the structure does not leave a lot of cold spots in the surroundings.

Remanescent of Community

Type : Community Justice Center (CJC) (Public)

Project Type : Competition Work

Location : Seelampur, Delhi

The literal meaning of the phrase “Renascent of community” means Rebirth of Society into a new life with a great vigour, emphasizing on the possibility of a better judicial system that will inspire community to participate and help build a better neighbourhood for themselves and everyone.

The location of the community justice center is chosen in those areas of New Delhi, India that are Crime- Prone Areas. It was found through a survey that these crime - kidnapping, murder, theft, etc are more prominent in those areas that have higher slum or lower middle class population. Also, it was discovered that most of the criminals involved had no job, were minors and were deprived of quality education or even basic quality living conditions in these areas.

Locating a CJC in one of these spots might significantly drop the crime rates of those areas and even inspire the neighbourhood to help maintain or improve the on-going conditions.

The Site is located in Seelampur, one of the highest crime prone areas. It is spacious and no visual boundary has been erected, except for the community gardens bordering certain areas of the plot.

A playground for children to come and play at any time and an amphitheatre and a ground has also been designed so that the interaction of community is maximum at all intervals of time.

Roof top garden is also been made accessible from outside so that at all times people can use it as a park or only to enjoy flowers.

Two entries from either of the major roads is given and south part can be used to access the playground situated next to the plot.

Simple circular form comforts the on-lookers and induces movement and suggests unity and harmony.

A smaller circle cut out from within to form amphitheatre and community ground for any large gatherings or for playing.

Less than a quarter of circle to provide easy access to the inner ground.

Double walls have been provided to reduce heat caused by sun. Between the two walls - one perforated and other brick wall, small gardens or plants are planted to purify the air and also to reduce heat.

One side of the curve is pushed downwards to provide a large ramp to access the roof from outside.

Sun dried bricks have been used in facade to form perforated geometric pattern that allow national light and ventilation to enter the structure. Public library, Classroom, cafe and communal kitchen have been provided. these can be used as community services that can be served by the offender. Also, it can serve as a learning facility for the neighbourhood children and adults alike.feeding area for stary animals is also provided so that the community kitchen can serve hungry animals as well.
