Education, Vocation, Avocation: Isabel Cardin Griffin Scholarship, English Speaking Union, Princess Helena College, Herts, England 1968-69; B.A. Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Johns Hopkins University, 1973; M.A., Psychology, Washington College, 1981; University of Maryland, Master Gardener Certification, 1990; Fellows in Change Management, the Johns Hopkins University, 1991. Served two years with Volunteer Maryland as an Americorps member then two more years as the Americorps Fellow with the MD Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism, 2004-6, 2006-8. After college I went into publishing, then a clinican with at risk children and families and developed to administrator /executive director in hospice, public health, welfare reform, Headstart, health, workforce technology, and Hiv/Aids programs on municipal, state, and federal levels.

Educational and training consultant at universities and for several federal agencies. Volunteer advocate and Board Member on several non profits, child abuse, horticultural, and medical advisory councils.

What are you most proud of and/ or what are your most rewarding experiences? Graduating from CH. One of the first 50 female undergraduates at Johns Hopkins University and first female elected as a Student Council officer, VP. ESU year was exhilarating for educational and travel adventures especially during 1968-9. Travelling to all 50 states, Canada, Central America, Caribbean, and all but one continents.

Experiencing other cultures, foods, and customs has been enriching and inspirational. Americorps was the best. The concept of service CH provided has been lifetime commitment for me.

What do you do for enjoyment? Digging in the dirt, people watching, photography, antiques and collectibles, travel, daydreaming, cooking with and for friends, wine consulting, and mentoring the young ones.

QPS, calf barn, Miss Wagoner, Ted Bruning, Miss Boyle’s English class (You know Esta, you must pass senior English to graduate.) and her stories about Dick, a.k.a., Richard Burton, the gong, Miss Kiem’s description of “floating island”, baby oil and mecuricrone sunbathing, Yardley howling with the dogs, Ethics with Dr. Dyer. Most importantly, the lifelong friendships we developed.

Gingee Brewer mv_50@hotmail.com PO Box 237 Saunderstown RI 02874 401-497-2008 Family Information: Partner/John Sheffield Corey, Son/Eric Education, Vocation, Avocation: After Chatham I spent 2 years in Marietta College and decided I needed a ‘vocation’....so quit Marietta and went to Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Rhode Island. I was the oldest classmate - so became President and had my class sign a petition to allow us to wear pant suits. Our petition was supported by the Boston and New York schools and pant suits were accepted. The last test was verbal shorthand transcription and typed out hard copy. After the shorthand the teacher asked if there were any questions and I raised my hand. She said Yes Miss Brewer... and I asked if the Boss’s grammar was incorrect...should I ask him or should I change it. The answer....the Boss is never wrong! That set me on my life’s course.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? I have started 4 companies since completing my education, sold three and the fourth is under consideration. All but one of my businesses have been started in Rhode Island and they have employed hundreds of people. I started my first business in Ethiopia in 1972 and it lasted until Haile Selassie was de-throned in 1974.

What do you do for enjoyment? Travel What are your favorite memories from your time at Chatham Hall? All of the extra curricular activities...swimming, horseback riding, soccer

Ed. I taught math and worked as a curriculum facilitator for the Guilford County School System. I sing in our church choir at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Asheboro NC and am active in the Colonel Andrew Balfour Chapter of the DAR. What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? In July 2000 Wayne and I formed our own video production company, Virtual Interactive Tours Abroad, Inc. Our mission is two-fold: to create and produce virtual experience videos around the world for people to enjoy as they exercise; and to film HD stock footage used by all major TV networks in the US, England and Canada.

This work allows us to stay active and keep fit as we travel and meet interesting people here and abroad.

What do you do for enjoyment? I enjoy genealogical research, attending classical music concerts and speed-walking Half Marathons (Miss Wagoner would simply hoot!!)

Who were your roommates freshman through senior year? Sadly, as a day girl, I missed out on that opportunity.

What are your favorite memories from your time at Chatham Hall? Meeting and going to classes with bright young girls from all over the country: hearing their ideas, dreams and aspirations; hearing John Henry ring the gong for lunch; horseback riding and Modern Dance with Mrs. Wright in Willis; services in Saint Mary’s Chapel and singing Christmas carols in the Well.

past January. We have four children. Eric , Kevin, Jamie, and Douglas.

Eric and his wife Rachel live in Ankara, Turkey. Eric at present is the Naval Attache at the Embassy and Rachel works in the embassy. They have four children, Jamie(18), Asher(16), Charlotte (13) and Aslan (12).

Next year he will be at the George C. Marshall Institute in Garmish, Germany. Kevin, a veteran, is in California. He plays mandolin in bands and in church. Jamie is married to Amy. They run Hickory Nut Gap Farm and Hickory Nut Gap Meats. They have three children, Cyrus (14), Nolin (11) and Levi (8). Douglas is married to Jamie. He and his cousin have a solar company, Sugar Hollow Solar (Sweetening the Current). We are hoping for more grandchildren!!

Education, Vocation, Avocation: John and I have a varied and interesting life. I teach riding to children, have a summer camp here on the farm, and serve on various volunteer boards and committees. John is a North Carolina legislator so we campaign and go to various local events. Makes it sort of hard to go to the Grocery Store!

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? I am most proud of my children and my husband. They have

provided many wonderful experiences.

What do you do for enjoyment? I enjoy riding with children and friends, I

keep up with local politics and national affairs, I have a garden and put up food, I especially love getting together with friends old and new!

I was the lower school director of admission at St. Andrew’s. I retired in July, 2016.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? I am certainly proud of my son and daughter. They were great as children and are delightful adults!

What do you do for enjoyment? I have always loved horses and that passion continues today. I have two horses on our farm and I am their sole caretaker.

This keeps me fit and immensely happy.

Harrison and wife Katherine Moncure Stuart are parents of Teddy 8, Jack 6, Lillian and Kate 4. They live in Nashville where Harrison is founding head of the Episcopal School of Nashville and Katherine is head of The Education Group which conducts searches for independent schools for teachers and heads of school as well as mentoring for new heads of schools. Son Sandy and wife Alana Joy Stuart are parents of Will 6, Millie 4 and Mary Grace 2. They live in Lexington, KY. where Sandy is a Thoroughbred Bloodstock Agent and Farm Manager and Alana is a preschool teacher.

Education, Vocation, Avocation: I graduated from Briarcliff College with a BA in English and my career has been in Development and Education.

For the past 10 years I have coordinated a scholarship fund for children of parents working on Central Kentucky Thoroughbred farms. Scholarships are based upon merit and financial need and are toward tuition. As a volunteer I coordinate an outreach fund at Christ Church Cathedral which helps those in financial need in our community. I also serve on the board of National Society of Colonial Dames of America in KY. I have loved learning about our two historic houses and the nation’s history as well.

At present I am the new associate trustee from KY to Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral home of George Washington. I am looking forward to visiting it in June of this year.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? I have had a wonderful life filled with family and friends. I am so proud of my two sons and enjoy life with them and their families.

As a result of their marriages they have brought me two wonderful daughters so life is great. I have 7 grandchildren who are a delight and all 4 granddaughters have a preliminary application to Chatham Hall in the files. I love spending time with brothers and sisters and families as well as my father in SC. What do you do for enjoyment? I play tennis both outdoor and indoor throughout the year and thoroughly enjoy the exercise as well as friendships involved. I love to travel, read, putter in my very small garden and spend time with family and friends.

clothes at Rippe’s in Danville enjoying listening to 45s and drinking free Coke, walking into town, skylab on Sundays during quiet hour, class trips, birthday dinners at the Rectory, waiting to see who would be Madonna each year, wearing danglies on Saturday nights, winning the contest to name the bookstore, The Cubby Hole, serving as head of Home Management and never hearing the end of it til this day, movies in the Hensleigh Room, dances at Woodberry Forest, passing notes in study hall, borrowing dresses for dances, asking parents to drive us through Hargrave and such wonderful friends I have kept for all these many years. We seem to pick up right where we left off oh those many years ago.

Mollie Hunt Holmes mollie@mollieholmes.com 1052 Cedar Hill Rd. Chatham, VA 24531 434-251-9776 Family Information: Husband, Warren Price, is retired from USDA and our cow-calf farming operation. He now enjoys woodworking and is in the process of building our retirement cottage on a smaller 21-acre farm closer to our lake home. Daughter, Lucy Hunt Holmes Erwin, graduated from Chatham Hall in 1993 and VA Tech in 1997. Her husband, Dr. Paul Erwin, is a veterinarian and co-owner of Chatham Animal Clinic, specializing in large animals. Grandson, Dixon, a freshman at Carlisle School, excels on the varsity baseball team & enjoys hunting & fishing. Granddaughter, Mollie Catherine, is in 7th grade at Carlisle School and will enter Chatham Hall in the fall of 2019. I also have 2 wonderful stepdaughters and families. Kim is an orthopedic nurse, and her husband owns a thriving auto business in Danville. Grandson, Austin, attends college in computer programming and computer science. Christy specializes in teaching advanced HS tech classes. Her husband is an executive with a large corporation. Allen is a Freshman at VA Tech, and Sarah Grace, in the 9th grade, is an accomplished dancer of ballet & other forms.

Education, Vocation, Avocation: Graduate of Queens University, Charlotte NC with a major in art. Worked in advertising as Account Executive for various agencies in Lincoln, NE, High Point, NC, Richmond, VA, Nashville, TN & Altavista, VA. After a satisfying and successful career & desiring a new challenge, I changed my career path to real estate sales & became a RE Broker. I retired in Dec. 2017 and enjoy volunteering at the new Pet Center and especially spending time and making memories with grandchildren.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? I’ve enjoyed multi-marathoning (5), but my most rewarding memories are those made with family, grandchildren & friends.

What do you do for enjoyment? Spending summers at our lake home at SML (especially when grandchildren come & bring friends). Also enjoyable is volunteering at the new Pitts. Co. Pet Center.

Who were your roommates freshman through senior year? My “roommates” were other day students. We shared a very tiny “closet” in the basement of Dabney.

What are your favorite memories from your time at Chatham Hall? Milk lunch & seeing how many Hydrox cookies our mouths could hold. Hearing the gong hail for lunch. Picnics in the dell under the big oak tree. Class trips.

Lantern Ceremony. Making & carrying the Ivy Chain. Finally being able to (legally) sit on Senior Stairs!

Education, Vocation, Avocation: I graduated from Trinity University in Texas, majoring in French and Russian plus many hours in Psych classes.

I began working at the Cleveland Clinic as a mental health worker on the psych floor. I then transitioned (still under the psych umbrella) to Creative Therapy, working with arts and crafts with chronically and terminally ill.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? Probably my experience at the clinic...to be giving back....being able to advise, counsel, and comfort patients and their families through struggles and illness.

What do you do for enjoyment? I used to play tennis almost daily, and for about 25 years crewing and competing in long-distance sailing races mostly on Lake Erie. As my body (knees, ankle, shoulder) rebelled against the abuse, I have turned to the arts. I enjoy paint on pottery, polymer clay, card making, and have sung in some musicals.

Laurie Nussdorfer lnussdorfer@wesleyan.edu 36 Leedsville Road Amenia, New York 12501 845-373-7302 Family Information: I’ve been married to Nicholas Adams, an architectural historian who just retired from teaching at Vassar College, since 2004. My first husband was the architect Fred Travisano.

Education, Vocation, Avocation: I’m a historian of early modern Italy, particularly Rome in the 16th & 17th centuries. For 29 years I taught history, literature and philosophy at Wesleyan University. After graduation my Chatham roommate Corinne Rafferty and I both went on to Yale University (when they first admitted women), and later I received a master’s degree in economic history from the London School of Economics and then did a PhD in history at Princeton University.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? I have loved history my whole life so researching and writing about the history of Rome in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, which was my professional scholarly focus, remains one of my most rewarding experiences. (And is still what I do for pleasure now that I’m retired from teaching.) Learning to speak Italian and developing life long friendships with people in Rome and Italy have been some of the most rewarding side effects of my career. I am proud of having published two books on the history of early modern Rome, but even more than pride I feel gratitude that I had the chance to fulfill my childhood dream of becoming an author. Aside from friendships, some of the most rewarding experiences I have had outside my career (though nothing is ever really outside history!) have been traveling in Europe. It was especially fun to show Corinne my favorite places in Stockholm and Rome!

What do you do for enjoyment? For pleasure I walk, bicycle and garden. I also loved horseback riding, which I returned to when I was 50 for sixteen years; I had a lively and much missed chestnut quarter horse named Ace of Hearts until 2014. Other highlights of my equestrian life were riding in Portugal with Nancy Remley Whiteley in 2004 and many wonderful trail rides with Annie Clarke Ager on her family’s beautiful farm in the mountains of western North Carolina. In 2009 Corinne and I walked the Offa’s Dyke Path on the WalesEngland border for a week. That got me hooked on walking in England, and I’ve become an almost annual visitor to Cornwall’s spectacular coastal footpath. I train the rest of the year for those walks, which I do with friends or sometimes by myself. Since Nick and I moved to rural New York in 1995, I have also had an ever expanding flower garden. Not sure how long I can keep up all the labor, but it is an enormous delight from April to November. In my lovely valley along the hilly border between New York and Connecticut I also enjoy cycling, but I do better on the hills on foot than on my bike!

Who were your roommates freshman through senior year? Chrissy Loomis sophomore year; Becky Young and Corinne Rafferty junior year; and Corinne Rafferty and Nancy Remley senior year.

What are your favorite memories from your time at Chatham Hall? This is an impossible question to answer! The annual operettas were immense fun: “Carnival,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” and “South Pacific.” I don’t sing very well, but thanks to my musical friend Nancy Remley somehow managed always to get into the casts. I actually had a whistle solo in “Mattress” (I was a nightingale!) Directing our surprise senior play, “Guys and Dolls”, was another wonderful memory. I’ll never forget trying to write the script with Corinne using nothing but a record of the musical and one viewing (on tv) of the famous film version with Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, which I guess we must have seen over spring break our senior year. I was incredibly proud of our class in “Guys and Dolls;” it showcased how deep the talent was. We didn’t call on the star singers because they were exhausted from the operetta, but the next tier turned out to be magnificent both in singing and acting. Another favorite memory (but there are hundreds more) is the amazing Saturday afternoons that Corinne and Nancy and I had as guests of the art teacher Gertrude Whiting. She invited us to her house to hear the regular Saturday afternoon broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera. While she rested in her room (as she put it, “imagining that I am back in New York”), we were allowed to sit quietly in the living room and listen to the radio. She left copies of “Opera News” magazine with the plot synopses out for us as well as cookies. I have loved opera ever since. And one last favorite: the spectacular birthday surprise that Corinne organized when I turned 16. I had been to Spain the summer before coming to Chatham, and I guess I did nothing but talk about Spain. So in February 1966 I was taken on a crazy treasure hunt that ended up in the chapel where I found a gorgeous book, “Spain: A History in Art”, awaiting me on the altar (did this really happen?!) and all my friends around. Of course I still have that precious book!

Education, Vocation, Avocation: Oh, this is hard to sum up: I went to France for a year, then went to Yale (with Laurie Nussdorfer), left college, went to Mexico, came back and graduated from college, worked in bars and on the docks of San Francisco and here and there, went to law school in California, moved back to NY and never worked as a lawyer but rather got involved in the Central America movement and started an organization that sent 1500 volunteers to pick coffee in Nicaragua and come back and organize against US funding of the war there, and from that point on I worked for foundations and other nonprofits, in New York and later in Minneapolis. My husband and I retired in 2016 and have moved to rural Wisconsin where he used to farm in the 1970s and early 80s.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? I’m proud of our children, and am very lucky to have known and worked with a lot of smart people trying to change the world for the better.

What do you do for enjoyment? Spending time with old friends is at the top of the list. Observing the natural world around us in rural Wisconsin.

I started a non-profit to help other ski areas get programs started.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences?

I’m in a couple of Hall of Fames, small and local, but appreciate being recognized for what I have done. The thing that get most excited about is working with wounded guys coming back from the war. These men and women have given their lives for our country and are totally changed b the experiences they have had.

Husband John and I own a family farm and enjoy raising our own beef and lambs. My hobby is raising and training Chesapeake Bay Retrievers for competitive field trials. I enjoy competing with the dogs all over the country.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? It was a challenge to open the veterinary practice and start a family around the same time period. I am proud of my family and have thoroughly enjoyed the veterinary profession.

I am the past president and current board member of the New England Terrier Club as well as a board member of the Ladies Dog Club.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? I am very proud of my two wonderful sons who both work in public safety. Greg is a captain in the Plainville Fire Department and Nick is a dispatcher for both Fire and Police in Plainville.

What do you do for enjoyment? I ride my horse and occasionally compete with him. I show Smooth Fox Terriers and run them in Terrier trials. We also have a small farm and I tend the animals and big vegetable gardens. I also knit, spin, and dye yarns from our own sheep.

the Community College of Denver, and the University of Hartford taking a range of liberal arts courses. I had no idea at the time what I really wanted to study or become professionally. I was fully committed to my family and to my community in Tacoma by the time I realized what career I would have chosen if I’d known they existed: art restoration or a museum registrar. I moved to Tacoma in 1976 and began volunteering, first with Planned Parenthood as a birth control counselor then, through the Junior League with several community groups. Over the years I have served on the boards of The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation; Planned Parenthood of Pierce and the Coastal Counties; Lakewold Gardens; the Fund for Women and Girls; the Holiday Cotillion of Tacoma; I also volunteered for a bit in the Registrar Department of the Tacoma Art Museum (TAM); was a member, with Peter, of the Activities Council of the TAM; by appointment a member of the Tacoma Arts Commission; and was selected to be a Fellow of the American Leadership Forum. Through these involvements I learned I enjoyed Board work, particularly the strategic planning process. I also learned that I’m at my best for about 4.5 years, then would prefer something new.

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? Being one

of a handful of people founding a Waldorf School in our area was my most challenging and rewarding endeavor. The strategic work taught me much and expanded my feeling of self worth and capacity; Anthroposophy expanded my heart; the community fed my soul; and the education nurtured my children. It’s been a fascinating, rewarding, and sometimes challenging experience working with family (siblings, parents, and across generations) and a great privilege to be able to do work in her name. After the kids went off to

college, we decided to build a year-round home at our beach property, 40 minutes west of Tacoma – which was a HUGE project. After experimenting with finding the right rhythm between the two, we decided to sell our wonderful, graceful 1904 home of 35 years and move full time to the Beach. Since then, I’ve not served on boards, and have been enjoying the pleasures of country living – and begun to weave; mostly large kitchen towels, placemats, and table runners. I wish I had begun weaving years ago; there is so much to learn and so many projects to make! Of course, there is travel: 3-4 trips to Connecticut/year for family visits and business, some International, but mostly a bit of down hill skiing in the winter, and boating in the summer. In our effort to simplify, we also sold our 48’ motorboat and now charter a boat for a month in the summer to cruise the amazing Pacific Northwest waters.

Who were your roommates freshman through senior year? I came as a Sophmore and roomed with Leslie Donaldson who left at the end of the year. Junior Year: Lucy Williams; Senior Year: Jane Howard.

What are your favorite memories from your time at Chatham Hall? Singing in the upper balcony choir in the chapel;

the food, of course, especially Shrove Tuesday lunch; the Tea Room; friendships; a safe environment to grow, to feel independent and away from parents, yet under some very caring eyes; the Well decorated for Christmas Holidays.

The first time I ever heard Handel’s Messiah was Sunday, December 5, 1965 at the Duke University Chapel – I was in awe and tears from its power and beauty and every time I hear The Messiah I am transported back there; Miss Boyle – the height of her heels matched the provocative insights she imparted and challenges to my intellect.

I volunteer as a member of the Altar Guild and a Chalice Bearer at St Thomas Episcopal Church. I am involved in two garden clubs as both as Show-er and a Grow-er. Love flower arranging and learning about all aspects of Horticulture! I am a member of The National Society of Colonial Dames and enjoy planning local events while learning about history. I am, once again, on the CH Alumnae Council and I am one of two Class Agents. I am proud of the new scarf I helped produce as a fundraiser for AC Legacy Scholarship Fund. I’ve loved being on the 50th Reunion Committee! What fun to be part of such a great smart capable group of women planning this momentous weekend!

What are you most proud of and/or what are your most rewarding experiences? One of the most rewarding experiences I have had was in support of Chatham Hall. I worked on the 1994 Centennial Committee and planned the Gala Weekend with Helen Sloneker Patch. We worked hard to cover the many details of everything from Porta-potties, menus and tents to table skirts, sound systems and heaters for more than 700 people.

It was a multiple year job and I am proud of the part my husband, Jerry Maish and I played in the event. I learned a great deal... about myself, about planning a large event and working together as part of a much larger project. It was, I believe, a huge success and lots of fun for all!

What do you do for enjoyment? I love to work in my garden, travel in this country and to Italy and spend time with my family! I am lucky to not only have George, my grandson but I still have both of my parents! We have wonderful exhausting holiday gatherings all year long. I enjoy adventures with my dear CH friend, Muffy Dent Stuart and exploring fun places.. I enjoy walking on any beach... anywhere! I really love staying in touch with a vast world of friends!

Who were your roommates freshman through senior year? Sophomore: Lou McMichael Miracle (Dabney), Junior: Sue Monzani Johnson (Penthouse), Senior: I had a single in Pruden What are your favorite memories from your time at Chatham Hall? I loved playing all sports and I loved being in plays and getting into The Sherwood Dramatic Club. I loved being in Virginia with the red dirt. The unique teachers and staff at the time! unforgettable! I loved watching the thunderstorms roll up the hill as we sat in Study Hall. I enjoyed the food (Tea Room, Cookie Cart, Dining Room, Picnics, all of it) So many silly times with this great group of girls! The surprises and secrets: Seniors decorating the Well before Christmas! The Dramatic Club play was a secret before Thanksgiving.

It was a surprise when each class would give a party for the School.(“Wise Fool’s Cafe”) I liked the dances with the boys schools. Liked dancing with Willy Somebody from VHS. He was a great dancer! Remember having a brass trio in the band at one dance for that great soul music? Enjoyed the class trips! “The Beautiful Caverns of Luray” and Skyline Drive motel with Miss Wagoner and “the bear”....Fun times in Williamsburg and the ferry boat ride and Carter Plantation. Every day at school was a new adventure in a special place with amazing people!

Remembrances of Those We Lost Candy was in Ethics class with me and we went ESU together. Her school was in Wales and cows were in the field outside her bedroom. She disliked their third bases’ smell. She was thoughtful and generous to a fault.

Lisa was a songwriter of great emotional insight. A laugh and smile that was infectious. A wild child at heart.

Chrissy was always twisting her hair and giggling with sheer delight. She lived and loved life with gusto. Strumming her guitar and rockin’ with the music.

Nancy always seemed to be playing Amazing Grace and singing. Music was ‘her’ element.

Sarah Church was very studious and generous and kind.

Lisa Wyeth was fun-loving.

Lou McMichael was very brave during her illness.

I loved Nancy Remley!

Sarah Church and I took Calculus with Mr. Strow. She was always so very sweet and kind to me, and I miss her.

Lisa Wyeth was the heart and soul of our Class Song competition each year and all of us eagerly anticipated what music would come out of that creative and wide-open mind of hers!

And dear Nancy Remley was so supportive when she and I played le Petite Suite in our Senior Recital. It was a real honor for me to play piano with her - what a gem...

Sarah Church was a brilliant person, interested in books and history and discussions. She was a great comfort and seemed mature beyond her years.

Kate was fun, energetic, always ready to do something.

Candy was kind and fun.

Louise and Chrissy, generally on the sofa in the front hall, laughing, kind, fun. I believe they wrote the Senior song.

Nancy Remley was my intellectual friend. She enjoyed studying and kept us all interested in the world around us. She loved riding as well.

Robin Lanier and Dorey Cole lived next door to me my sophomore year. We would have long discussions in the afternoons.

Candy Heyward could always see the brighter side of a bad situation and make me laugh.

Lisa Wyeth Kirk was THE most gifted song writer, singer and actress as well as funniest girl I ever knew both at Chatham and in summer on Martha’s Vineyard where we would never miss going to the latest movie.

Sarah Church truly was quiet as a church mouse and smart as a whip and a wonderful girl.

Nancy Remley Whiteley was amazing as she came all the way from Anamosa, Iowa! Great rider and really smart.

Chrissie Loomis was a very clever and quiet girl.

Robin Lanier Stewart was always scared of gaining an ounce and thus her life was heck as adults were always making sure she ate!

Kate Downer was a really fun and smart girl who never seemed to meet a book she didn’t like.

Lou McMichael was so proud to be a tar heel and we were all aware of it!

I am deeply sorry about the loss of these women and while I did not know any of them well I respected and like them during the high school days.

They are all wonderful women and it is hard to believe they are gone-they will be missed at our reunion.

Those we love and lose are always connected by heartstrings to infinity. (Guillemetes) The individual senses of humor of the five I knew best! Wish I had known Nancy Remley better.

I met up with Candy in Toronto in the early 1990s when she was teaching and had just discovered her adopted daughter Petra was autistic. Despite her sadness, she was resolute and utterly loving. I was impressed. I most remember Lisa’s songs Jr and Sr years...Diamonds in the sands, dreams in other lands....

Kate Downer was my roommate for sophomore year. She was great fun and had a great laugh. I am sorry that she never came back after sophomore year.

Chrissy Loomis was a friendly and slightly devilish roommate my sophomore year; she helped to make my transition into boarding school life easy and entertaining.

Sarah Church was a dear friend. I took Dr. Burch’s chemistry class junior year and couldn’t understand how to do a single thing. Nothing. I simply didn’t get any of it. Sarah grasped chemistry perfectly so she basically tutored me during the entire course. She was a patient, brilliant source of explanations, especially of everything that involved the lab. I visited her a couple of times at her family’s house in the Berkshires where she introduced me to the delights of summer concerts on the lawn at beautiful Tanglewood. I think of her now when I go to those concerts.

Nancy Remley, who died in 2013, was our roommate senior year and became a very close lifelong friend. She and I became friends on a bus excursion to see the autumn leaves in the beautiful Virginia hills in the fall of 1965. That love of nature remained a bond between us: in 2004 she instigated my most thrilling riding adventure when we rode for a week in southern Portugal. The forest where she used to ride in her hometown of Anamosa, Iowa has been named in her memory “Remley Woods.” After college and a year teaching in England Nancy went on to get a PhD in psychology and to become a practicing psychotherapist in Chicago. She taught medical residents specializing in family practice and also psychology to education students at Northwestern University. Family was the most important thing in Nancy’s life, however, and she was a never failing source of love and wisdom on that subject both for her family and for others who needed help with families. She and her husband, psychiatrist Dr. Harry Whiteley, had two sons, Daniel (1982) and Adam (1985), who have turned into superb young men--sensitive, sociable, imaginative, empathic.

Adam married Kate Finkbeiner in 2016 and is now studying for his master’s degree in social work at the University of Michigan. Daniel, who works for a craft brewer in Chicago, married his college sweetheart Maggie Waldron; on 29 January 2018 Maggie gave birth to Nancy’s first grandchild, Eliza Niamh. We will make sure that she learns all about her much loved and much missed grandmother!

Oh my, I was the closest to Christy Loomis. We were in a lot of classes together and took riding together. We just clicked.

I’m gathering my thoughts and memories for this and will share when we gather. Love to all I’m so sad to lose all these wonderful people on this earth, and I am thankful for them all in all their glory.

Sarah Church-her beautiful eyes and calm, strong way; a great leader who would have been so great as President of Student Council; she was so wise and smart and honest and could really write.

Kate Downer-I wish I had known her better; I remember her kind, strong and quiet and natural way.

Candace Heyward-Candy-such a darling, strong individual; in her quiet way plugging away and making things work and doing the behind-the-scenes crucial jobs; her great calm and honesty and humility.

Louisa Wyeth Kirk-Lisa-she always lives on with me in those beautiful class songs she wrote that won the prize every year; I can see her writing and living out “O sun, my life, come kiss me now; come tear my soul apart”; the way she painted and drew so beautifully and Miss Whiting’s displaying so many of Lisa’s works in the halls; her genius in the arts and her singing on the steps with the Sextet; her bursting full of life.

Louise McMichael Miracle-Lou-so fine and loving and gentle, full of southern graciousness; her great love of and care for horses and her home and a fine rider; her great inner calm and kindness and her smile and fun, light, easygoing way; her great courage and grace in her illness.

Christine Loomis Ranelli-Chrissy-so full of depth and feeling and zest; so great in those plays and singing with the Sextet and in the choir-she looked great in that little choir hat; so cool and awesome and poised and fun; so graceful in movement and being.

Nancy Remley Whiteley-Remley-Oh, precious Remley, so smart and darling; what a musician-loved her playing that guitar and singing on the steps with the Sextet and in the choir and all over; so much fun and ready for adventure; really worked hard on everything she did including guiding us all in “Guys and Dolls” and directing our class in the singing; always a twinkle in her eye and always told it like it was; really strong on Student Council and a true friend to many and a great encourager and listener; so dear and so full of love and integrity and light.

Robin Lanier Stewart-I remember seeing her for the first time with her long, long hair, which gradually got shorter and shorter each year; she was lovely and graceful; extraordinary self control; very hard on herself, and she did not take notice of how lovely and fine she was; she was always striving to do better; she was very refined and delicate, and she persevered Lisa Wyeth was, for me, the center of our class--so talented and funny and irreverent, and such a presence. She really really didn’t like being stuck in the hills of southern Virginia, yet her spirit was so important to our class. She was so dramatic, so creative. So moody. I remember her makeup. Those eyes. Goodness. I remember her paintings and her poems, and her playing the guitar in her room. I remember the class songs she wrote every year and how she always won the contest for our class. I remember her in plays. A clown in Carnival. Bloody Mary in South Pacific. I remember her swearing more than anyone else in the school--I’m pretty sure I’m right about that. I remember her in Senior Sextet, with Chrissy Loomis and Nancy Remley ---all three of whom died way, way too soon.

Chrissy was a lovely, mischievous sprite who made us all laugh. Her eyes twinkled, as a sprite’s should.

Nancy Remley was one of my roommates senior year, and was a friend for life. With Laurie Nussdorfer, I slept on the crowded floor of Nancy Remley’s DC apartment in 1969 when we went to one of the Moratorium marches against the war in Vietnam. Nancy was a Congressional intern then, I think. I went to Nancy’s wedding years later and reconnected again when she came to a party in NY for Laurie’s 40th birthday. The three of us saw each other regularly after that. Our three birthdays are within a few weeks of each other, so we would celebrate together. Nancy had a PhD in psychology, and taught at Northwestern, including a class for incoming medical school residents to help them understand the difference between normal human development/aging and disease (such an important distinction!)

She married Harry Whitely, who had three children from his earlier marriage, and she and Harry then had two boys of their own; Nancy was a truly thoughtful, gentle and loving step-parent and parent. Laurie and I got to know the whole family as we visited Nancy over the years and spent time with her during her illness (Multiple Systems Atrophy, a form of Parkinson’s disease). So I knew Nancy as a grownup, as a different person from the shy, musical girl from Anamosa, Iowa. But from Chatham, I remember this: her seriousness, her integrity, her love of riding, her trying to get me out of bed so I wouldn’t be late for breakfast again, her exasperation with me for never wearing stockings to chapel because as a council member she had to give me points off. I also remember how she agonized over the hard decisions student council had to wrestle with, which she couldn’t speak to us about. I remember especially her love for her family and how deeply she missed them. And her singing. Her clear, clear voice. Her perfect pitch.

Each played an important role in the life of our class and it makes me sad to think they can not be with us, but in spirit, as we gather after 50 years.

LIsa Wyeth taught me how to play the guitar. I remember spending time with her as she taught me the chords on the guitar (and tried to teach me to sing). I remember the beautiful singing of the senior quartet (I believe Lisa Wyeth, Nancy Remley and Chrissy Loomis and Kathy Reynolds were all members).

I remember the quiet friendship and intellect of Sarah Church.

Sarah: Gentle, smart and quietly funny Kate: Loved to eat dates and was so funny... beaming smile!

Lisa: What a musician, singer, athlete, artist, personality, her laugh and sense of humor!

Chrissy: Silly, crazy, wild woman!

Nancy: Bright, talented, lovely and loving person I was lucky to have Sarah Church as my soph. yr. roommate because she knew the ropes from coming in as a freshman. She was funny and sane, down to earth. She was from MA, a real New Englander.

Lisa Wyeth was my sr. year roommate and a great friend, extremely gifted artistically and musically. She wrote all of our class songs and was a star in the musicals. Her very rich sense of humor kept us both sane through the last year of CH. She was also a gifted writer. Through her dad, who was Maurice Sendak’s editor, she got us permission to use Where the Wild Things Are for our yearbook theme.

I am so sorry that we have lost these wonderful classmates.

Chrissy Loomis was my first roommate. I remember her love of Barbra Streisand. Chrissy would sit on her bed in our Pruden dorm room and sing a fabulous rendition of People. Her vocal and acting prowess wowed me.

Sarah Church and I were great friends. We visited each other’s homes numerous times over our four years at Chatham and roomed together Junior year. Sarah came to my wedding in 1971 and in 1988 to my house in Bethesda. We traveled together to Chatham for our 20th reunion. Sadly that was the last time I saw her. I admired Sarah’s keen mind, her sincerity, and her humor.

I roomed with Kate Downer my Freshman year. Kate had a wonderful sense of fun and a ready laugh.

Candace (Candy) Heyward was a good friend throughout my years at Chatham. She was gentle, kind, smart and a lot of fun.

Just the heartsick feeling that they are gone.

When I look at the list I see a very talented group of women that we lost too soon!

I ran into Sarah and her mother on Fifth Avenue in New York while I was working at Tiffanys, Lisa Wyetth was so talented in writing the class song.

Lisa Wyeth was such a good friend and amazing person with so much talent. She wrote our winning class songs every year. She was always a little disheveled, running in late to things, trying to skimp by on stuff (like wearing stockings to chapel), but so much fun.

Chrissy was likewise so talented and always gave of herself to others.

Nancy Remley: I had never met anyone like her before. She was so good to everyone, genuinely cared for each of us.

She had so much musical talent and was so much fun to be with
