The Russian Avant-garde, Siberia and the East, is the first international exhibition to examine the fundamental importance of the Oriental and Eurasian connection to Russian Modernism. The exhibition follows the destinies of Russia’s self-proclaimed “Barbarians” in their search for new sources of artistic inspiration and demonstrates how modern Russian culture experienced a deep attraction to – and an apprehension of – the exotic, the unknown and the “Other”, which artists and writers identified with the spirit of the taiga, the virgin territories of desert and steppe and the “otherness” of Oriental culture. The Russian Avant-garde was characterised by bold experiment and innovation, culminating in such works as Kandinsky’s Improvisations and Malevich’s Black Square, which have long been recognised as central to the history of 20th-century European art. The Russian Avant-garde, Siberia and the East argues that the “Russian” Avant-garde was not only Russian or even European, but was inspired by other traditions, notably those of the Orient. Bakst and Malevich, for example, were at the forefront of this cultural trajectory, the former with his costumes and sets for the Ballets Russes, paying homage to Shiva sculptures, Buddhist temples and Siamese costumes, the latter with abstract paintings informed by the Buddhist concept of nirvana. Kandinsky, Larionov and Vatagin studied shamanistic and Hindu rituals, referring to them in their paintings or sculptures; Goncharova, Konchalovsky and Mashkov reproduced Chinese and Japanese broadsheets in their still lifes; Theosophy, elaborated by Helena Blavatsky after her exposure to Indian philosophy, was an important influence on Russian painters, sculptors and writers of the time. The exhibition underscores, displaying 130 works (79 paintings, watercolours and drawings, 15 sculptures and 36 Oriental artefacts and ethnographical objects) divided into 11 sections, the complex relationship Russian artists experienced with the Orient, Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Natal’ia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Léon Bakst, Alexandre Benois, Pavel Filonov. These prime movers of the Avant-garde were deeply aware of the importance of the East and contributed to the rich debate which left a profound and permanent imprint on their creative imagination. In addition to the heroes of the Russian Avant-garde, this exhibition will also acquaint the visitor with other, less familiar but strikingly original, artists of the day such as Nikolai Kalmakov, Sergei Konenkov and Vasilii Vatagin, many of whose works are being shown in the West for the first time. Until 19th January 2014

The Baptistery

Bargello

Dante's Florence

The origins of the temple dedicated to St. John the Baptist, later patron saint of the city, are still uncertain. According to tradition, it was founded in Roman times and dedicated to the god Mars. Several sarcophagi have in fact been found in this area, today in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo, as was the famous statue of Mars, which medieval chronacles tell us stood at the entrance to Ponte Vecchio.

The Bargello was built between 1255 and 1261 for the Captain of the People and was therefore once a symbol of authority and power. Its unknown architect took his inspiration from the Castle of the Counts Guidi at Poppi. The building later became the residence of the Podestà. However, in 1574, it was downgraded to become the headquarters of the Captain of Justice, the Bargello or head of the police force.

The heart of medieval Florence starts from one side of Via del Corso and, more specifically, lies between the church of San Martino del Vescovo, the Badia Fiorentina and the Bargello. In the middle of this ancient triangle you can find the site of the houses of the Alighieri family. Dante Alighieri is the author of the Divine Comedy the literary work that officially gave birth to the Italian language.

The Magi Chapel Tuscan Olive Oil

There is little doubt that the best way to a woman’s heart is to surprise her with a piece of jewellery. Even the most indifferent and hard hearted are captured by such a gift and many sins are immediately forgiven! Jewellery, one of the world’s most ancient crafts, is particularly well represented in Florence if you have set your heart on finding something really special, you are more than likely to be able to find it here.

Definitely one of the must-see sights in Florence: it’s the famous Cappella dei Magi decorated by Benozzo Gozzoli in 1459-60 as a private place of worship for the Medici family in their newly built palazzo in via Larga. Gozzoli painted his cycle over three of the walls, the subject being the Journey of the Magi to Bethlehem, a virtually never-ending train of followers surrounds the Three Wise Men on their way to Bethlehem

November marks the harvesting of the olives. It is usually hard and backbreaking work. Almost every farm in Tuscany boasts an olive grove (many people have a tree or two in their garden for home consumption); some farms even have their own olive press, a guarantee of good oil, as the olives should be milled immediately after picking. Others have to take their olives to the nearest available press for immediate washing and milling.

The Baptistery

The origins of the temple dedicated to St. John the Baptist, later patron saint of the city, are still uncertain. According to tradition, it was founded in Roman times and dedicated to the god Mars. Several sarcophagi have in fact been found in this area, today in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo, as was the famous statue of Mars, which medieval chronacles tell us stood at the entrance to Ponte Vecchio. However some scholars think that the building was the Praetorium and the statue that of a barbarian king. Dante himself declared that his "beautiful San Giovanni" was a classical Roman building. Its octagonal shape, the two lower orders, the attic and the springer of the cupola, date from the early Christian construction, which was possibly altered or completed in the early decades of the 7th century during the Lombards times. The church was apparently acting as the cathedral in the place of Santa Reparata. In 1059 the Florentine Pope Nicholas II reconsacrated the basilica, which was to be the new bishopric. The eight segments of the cupola had certainly been completed by then as well as the semicircular apse which was added on the west side to contain the altar: the three doors opened on the other three sides. San Giovanni did not definitely abandon its position as a cathedral and remain as the Baptistery alone until 1128. At the time the sacrament was administered only twice a year, making several entrance doors necessary to allow access to the crowds of worshippers. We should remember that there were apparently 30.000 inhabitants in "Fiorenza" in 1172 and the new fourth circle of walls enclosed at least double the area of the third ring, built by Matilde di Canossa in 1078.

This was also the period (mid 12th century) in which the external revestment of the Baptistery was started: this masterpiece of white Carrara and green Prato marble inlay, geometrically designed in a harmonious classical style to cover the original sandstone, already shows signs of the search for spatial delimitation that was to lead to the perspective of the Renaissance. The final result is of great elegance that perfectly incarnates the artistic spirit of the Florentines. The windows are also interesting, with their alternate pointed and semicircular tympani: a classical decoration that was used throughout the Renaissance. After having been a revolutionary building, as far as architecture was concerned, the Baptistery went on to become a laboratory for the new Florentine school of painting that originated with Coppo di Marcovaldo, Cimabue and eventually led to Giotto. By the 14th century plans were already under way for the creation of the new doors which also had to be worthy of the monument: the sculptor Andrea Pisano was commissioned with the first pair, which he carried out between 1330 and 1336, while Lorenzo Ghiberti designed and made two sets of doors, one pair between 1401 and 1424 and the other, known as the "Doors of Paradise", between 1425 and 1452. The two porphyry columns standing on either side of the Door of Paradise were donated to Florence by the Pisans in gratitude for the military help the city received in 1117 against Lucca, when its fleet was otherwise engaged against the Muslims in the Balearic Islands.

Palace, Prison & Museum The Bargello was built between 1255 and 1261 for the Captain of the People and was therefore once a symbol of authority and power in Florence. Its unknown architect (or architects) took his inspiration from the Castle of the Counts Guidi at Poppi and the same design was used for almost all the town halls in Tuscany. The building later became the residence of the Podestà (1261) and other magistrates. However, in 1574, it was downgraded to become the headquarters of the Captain of Justice, the Bargello or head of the police force. It served this purpose for three centuries, earning itself a sorry fame as a prison but, after the Risorgimento, it was completely restored, becoming the National Museum in 1865. The high battlemented tower, known as the Volognana, was built in the 12th century as a private tower house. The splendid inner courtyard, with its arched porticoes and 14th to 16th century coats of arms, has retained all its original medieval aspect. The staircase on one side is by Neri di Fioravante, closed off by an iron gate attributed to Giuliano da Sangallo. The fine Hall of the General Council, also designed by Neri di Fioravante, now the Hall of Donatello, contains many works by the great Florentine sculptor, among them the bronze ‘David’ (1430 ca.), the first nude of the Renaissance, made for Cosimo the Elder, and the St. George carried out for Orsanmichele. Apart from sculptures by Desiderio da Settignano, Michelozzo and Verrocchio and ceramics by Luca della Robbia, the museum also contains works in bronze by Giambologna and Benvenuto Cellini, as well as the two bronze panels by Ghiberti and Brunelleschi for the competition of 1401 for the North Door of the Baptistery, won by Ghiberti. The Michelangelo Room contains the great sculptor’s Bacchus, Pitti Tondo, David Apollo and the Bust of Brutus, together with works by Jacopo and Andrea Sansovino, Ammannati, Baccio Bandinelli and Tribolo. The Chapel of Santa Maria Maddalena (frescoes by the school of Giotto), on the first floor, has only recently been restored and opened to the public. The museum also contains paintings, majolicas, gold and silverware, weapons and ivories from various collections.

Frilli Gallery Sculpture Art Studio in Florence Since 1860

ince 1860 Frilli Gallery is a manufacturer of handcarved marble and hand-chiselled bronze sculptures for interior and garden decoration. The Gallery presents a wide range of Greek, Roman, Classical, Renaissance, Art Nouveau and Contemporary statues. The top quality replicas produced are highly valued “lost wax” bronze castings from original molds or hand carved white Carrara marbles, alabasters and stones. During 150 years of activity, Frilli Gallery has become the name of reference for private collectors , hotels, i nterior designers, worldwide museums. Over the years Frilli Gallery pieces have been purchased by royal families, shown at international exhibitions . Throughout this time, the Frilli Gallery has remained true to its mission: to bring “authentic” replicas of pieces of classic and modern sculpture to contemporary residences, villas and parks. “Authentic” replicas may sound as a contradiction in itself. But not many people know that replicas were already popular in antiquity. Most of the classical pieces shown in museums today are actually replicas of lost originals that became even more popular in the Renaissance as Roman and Greek art was rediscovered. There are few private art galleries in the world that can still bring new emotions to the visitors. The Frilli Gallery in Florence is one of those. Masterful replicas to be touched, caressed probed freely with your own hand, fingers. This experience will not leave one unmoved.

Walking through

Dante's Florence

Sergio Iannotta Concierge Hotel Brunelleschi +39 055.27370 introduces

28

The heart of medieval Florence starts from one side of Via del Corso and, more specifically, lies between the church of San Martino del Vescovo, the Badia Fiorentina and the Bargello. In the middle of this ancient triangle you can find the site of the 13th century houses of the Alighieri family, according to many documents of the time. Dante Alighieri (Florence, 1265 - Ravenna, 1321) is universally known as the author of the Divine Comedy, a poem that, for its grandeur of construction, power, variety of form and immense richness of expression, is acknowledged as one of the supreme masterpieces of world literature as well as the literary work that officially gave birth to the Italian language.

House of Dante

The Dante House-Museum Via Santa Margherita, 1r - Tel. 055.219416 Open from 10.00 until 17.00 Closed on Monday

The House of Dante is situated between the little square and Via di Santa Margherita, opposite the Tower of the Castagna and the remains of the Church of San Martino al Vescovo. Although it was built in the first decade of the 20th century, it is undoubtedly one of the most suggestive buildings in the city. Dante was in fact born under the sign of Gemini between the end of May and early June of 1265 right here in the heart of medieval Florence and documentary evidence tells us that this was the site of the houses of the Alighieri family. After the Poet’s death, his brother Francesco sold part of the house (in 1332) to the Mardolli family, while the rest of the building continued to belong for a few more years to Dante’s sons who, after all the family’s problems, had by then left Florence for some time. The division of the Alighieri houses soon led to them falling into decay. Popular tradition however always remembered and indicated the group of humble and “forgotten” buildings, near the Tower of the Castagna, as having been “the house of Dante” and the birthplace of the Poet.

Santa Margherita de' Cerchi The Church of Santa Margherita dei Cerchi is considered the church of Dante, as it was where the poet married Gemma Donati and, according to tradition, when he was only nine years old, he also met his beloved Beatrice Portinari for the first time. This is where Folco Portinari, Beatrice’s father was buried, as well as the nurse Monna Tessa, whose tombstone however can now be seen in the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, whose foundation, according to tradition, was inspired by the nurse and then carried out by Folco in her name. In spite of the commemorative plaque, the theory that Beatrice herself was buried here is most unlikely because, as she married into the Bardi family, she was most probably laid to rest in her husband’s family tomb, situated in the Great Cloisters of Santa Croce. The interior of the church contains an altarpiece of the Madonna enthroned with Sts. Lucy, Margaret, Agnes and Catherine of Alexandria by Lorenzo di Bicci above the main altar. Visitors may write letters to Beatrice to ask her to help them with their love lives and leave them in the basket next to her shrine.

interview | ANGELA CAPUTI

Meeting Angela Caputi Giuggiù Angela Caputi founded her atelier in 1975. Her laboratory in the old city centre of Florence brought her international fame and the Angela Caputi brand name soon found a place on world markets; today the Florentine stylist is one of the best-known names in the field of haute couture costume jewellery. In recent years the designer’s work has been displayed in various exhibitions in Florence and even shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York. Her collections are all carried out with the exclusive use of synthetic materials and are characteristic for their stylish elegance, a typical expression of Italianmade products in the world. How did you manage to carry out your ideas? When I first started, fashion tended to follow more conservative trends and most bijoux were somewhat classical and certainly not very smart or avant-garde. I therefore tried to create pieces that would allow women to express their personalities by using refined colours and shades as well as special techniques to add character and enrich the plastic materials that lie at the base of my creations, while also adding to their elegance.

What materials do you use for your creations? We only use synthetic materials. Even the coral and shell-like details are made in resins. These materials are extremely lightweight and can be adapted to various shapes and shades of colour, because they are extremely flexible. Everything is made absolutely in Italy, the bijoux are then assembled in our laboratory, which is also a boutique, in Via San Spirito in Florence. This is why we are quite certain that every creation n the collection is really made in Italy. What kind of women wear your jewellery? Certainly they are independent women of all ages and nationalities. A typical client is a cultured and fashionable woman, who likes travelling and getting to know various different cultures. Men also appreciate my creations, from the materials to the design, as if they were real works of art.

interview | ANGELA CAPUTI

What objectives do you think you have reached? I have managed to make my brand name known throughout the world, from South Africa to New Zealand, and have a catalogue of over 8000 articles. I have also managed to found a company based on women, who work in all the stages of the productive line: from the design to the realisation of each piece, which is always assembled by hand. I have also managed to keep my roots in the Oltrarno area of Florence, where the heart of the company has its premises, and thus contribute towards maintaining the values of craftsmanship that has always been identified with this area. What about your new collection? What most characterises it? This winter we propose many new features including the refined collection "Granito": an elegant line that matches the ruby-colored agate to particular elements that resemble granite, all designed in clean geometric shapes. We propose "Tiger" a pretty aggressive line dedicated to those women who live everyday life as a perpetual "struggle." Then we have a special collection very suitable for the Christmas period and New Year celebrations, it is called "Hollywood" as it is all starry and shiny and will brighten the evenings of every woman festivity!

Brancacci Chapel The Cradle of Renaissance

The entrance to the Brancacci Chapel is on the right of the steps up to the church of santa maria del carmine. Masolino di Panicale, originally Masaccio’s teacher, was commissioned to do the cycle of frescoes, but Masaccio, whose talent had surpassed his master, took over from him in 1424-5. The cycle was completed after 1480-85 by Filippino Lippi. These frescoes, (Adam and Eve expelled from Paradise, the Payment of the Tribute Money, etc.), were to influence generations of artists and pave the way for the Florentine Renaissance. On the first day after his arrival in Florence, Stendhal had gone to see the tombs of the great men in Santa Croce, while re-reading Foscolo’s poem I Sepolcri, which he had in his attaché-case; the second day he went to the “church of the Carmine where Masaccio’s frescoes are”. Stendhal’s instincts were right, for a visit to see Masaccio’s frescoes in the Carmine is an experience beyond that of going to museums and mausoleums; it is a visit to the heart of Florence and to one of the greatest works of art in the city. What we know of Masaccio’s life suggests that he eschewed high living and was dedicated only to his art, unlike his great Flemish contemporary, Van Eyck, who acted both as a diplomat and as a courtier in his native Bruges. Masaccio was held in high esteem by such politically important figures as Felice Brancacci, who commissioned this chapel in the Carmine, and later he was called to Rome to work for members of the Holy See. It was there that Masaccio died in 1428 aged 26, either from the plague or from poisoning. At the outset of his career, he had portrayed the consecration of the church of the Carmine in 1422 in the famous fresco called the Sagra, formerly in the cloister of that church but destroyed in 1600. The fresco showed the square in front of the church and a great procession of people, amongst whom he included portraits of his friends: Brunelleschi was shown wearing wooden clogs, also Donatello and Masolino (who later worked with Masaccio in the Brancacci Chapel). He also portrayed the foremost political figures of the day: Uzzano, Giovanni di Bicci dei Medici, Brancacci and others, and he included the gatekeeper standing

with the keys in his hands by the door of the convent. All this was shown with the utmost realism; sadly we only know of the fresco’s appearance from copies. The Brancacci Chapel became the school of the Florentine Renaissance painters, including Michelangelo. Here we shall limit ourselves to pointing out the civic meaning of this cycle, which, as is indicated by the episode of the Tribute Money, is obviously a reference to the catasto, the important egalitarian tax reform passed in Florence in 1427. Masaccio was implying that it is necessary to “render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s,” i.e. pay one’s taxes. He himself made his tax declaration in July 1427, from which we learn that he lived in a rented house with his mother and his younger brother and that he also paid the rent for half a workshop near the Bargello; also he had many debts. At that time this very modest tax-payer was, together with Van Eyck, one of the greatest painters in the world; and no one knows how his painting would have developed if he had not died the following year. Brunelleschi, usually very pungent in his remarks about other artists, this time commented: “We have suffered a great loss.”

44

itinerary | brancacci

Florence tradition for Jewels

One of the first places you will want to visit is the extremely ancient and world famous Ponte Vecchio. Originally constructed with stone fore-starlings and paved in wood, it was the first bridge to be built in Florence in the time of the Roman Legion and crossed the Arno at its lowest fordable point. Always quickly repaired, the bridge was carried away by the floodwaters in the tragic flood of 1333 along with all the other bridges in the city. In 1345 the Ponte Vecchio was reconstructed under the direction of Taddeo Gaddeo, a student of Giotto. In 1442 the city authorities ordered all the local butchers to open their shops on the Ponte Vecchio. The Signoria

46

evicted the butchers in 1593 and gave the shops to the more respectable and tidy goldsmiths. To this day these clever craftsmen and jewellers still occupy the shops and continue the tradition of creating the jewellery that has made Florence famous in the world. You could almost call Florence a paradise of jewellery and, if you have set your heart on finding something really special, you are more than likely to be able to find it here. Florence is in fact one of the few places in the world that offers so much in such a limited space. Almost all Florentine jewellers are also craftsmen and designers, with their own laboratories, but today they are joined by many famous foreign brands as well.

Annamaria Cammilli Everything is due to the talent of an artist, Annamaria Cammilli, designer, painter and sculptress, who gives life to her creations in the atmosphere of her home in the hills outside Florence. Original forms and colour combinations, plus matching tonalities and techniques, lie at the basis of her refined works of art and the jewellery in the Cammilli collections. The unique and essential element in Cammilli jewellery is the use of various shades of gold: a palette of six exclusive colours obtained through carefully researched alloys. The collections focused on flower forms that have made the Cammilli brandname famous throughout the world, have been further enhanced by new lines based on an essential and refined design that have been hugely successful. From the beautiful "Aqua" collection, with its undulating contours recalling the slow pace of the sea at sunset; through the gold bands and wire of the "Dune" collection, which recall the desert, the movement of waves or tracks left in the sand; to the "Sultana" collection, a three dimensions abstract flower with fine veins on each petal that bring it to life.

We suggest that you make a day trip "under the Tuscan sun" outside Florence to visit the ancient town of Cortona, where you can not only admire many wonderful works of Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance art, but also visit the delBrenna workshop: a former mill, once used for preparing wine and oil, where the extraordinarily beautiful and precious delBrenna jewellery is created today. This centuries-old environment contains the workshop where fine craftsmanship has always been carried out and seems almost to be dominated from above by the powerful framework of cross vaults and barrel vaulting. The delBrenna family (Counts from the feud of Brenna from the 13th century) survived seven hundred years of history to reach the early 20th century when Giovanni started up the firm that was to became delBrenna family Art business: creating jewellery that brings joy to whoever owns or wears it, even if only for a moment. Giovanni therefore passed down the ancient art of goldsmithery to Massimo who, with equal enthusiasm and dedication, taught it to his sons, Sebastian and Alessandro, who now run the firm and have created this extraordinary workshop where the goldsmith's art, and the experience of enjoying something beautiful to wear, coexist.

The church of San Miniato al Monte was constructed sometime after the year 1000 on top of a pre-existent Oratory that had been built by St. Miniato, the first evangelizer and Christian martyr in Florence. Victim of the persecutions of the Emperor Decius (249-251 A.D.), Miniato is thought to have been an Armenian prince: the legend narrates that, after his decapitation, he picked up his head, put it back on his neck and went to die in a cave on Monte alle Croci, where he had lived as a hermit and where later the oratory and the church that bear his name were to be built. Construction on the temple, one of the finest examples of pure Florentine Romanesque architecture, first started in 1018, thanks to Bishop Ildebrando, and continued until 1207. The facade was carried out in white Carrara and green Prato marble (12th-13th centuries) and divided into two orders linked together by rhombiform inlaid work, in allusion to the "opus reticolatum", the typical system used during the Roman Empire for building walls; it was also used by Leon Battista Alberti for the base of Palazzo Rucellai. The upper order is surmounted by a 13th century mosaic of the enthroned Christ in benediction between the Madonna and St.

The belltower, built to replace the original one, which fell down in 1499, was never completed; instead it was used for military purposes during the siege of 1529 at the suggestion of Michelangelo. Protected by mattresses and bales of wool, it was used as a base for the two cannon that were supposed to fire on the troups of Charles V. It still bears signs of the use it was put to today. The interior is divided into three naves, with a beautiful inlaid marble floor decorated with the Symbols of the Zodiac (11th century) in the centre. The raised Presbitery is formed by a rare TuscanRomanesque sculptoral complex of classical inspiration: the altar, enclosed by a marble transenna, the square pulpit (the work of Giovanni di Gaiole and Francesco di Domenico) and the lectern, supported by the eagle of St. John the Evangelist. The Choir contains a mosaic of the enthroned Christ in benediction. The crypt is situated underneath the Presbitery; it is supported by 36 agile columns of various origin and the ceiling is frescoed with Saints and Prophets by Taddeo Gaddi. The remains of St. Miniato were placed here in 1013. Apart from several 14th and 15th century frescoes, the righthand nave contains the remains of St. Miniato, an altar with a cuspidate panel, the masterpiece of Jacopo del Casentino, and the entrance to the Sacristy, frescoed by Spinello Aretino with Stories of St. Benedict (1387 c. much restored in 1840), possibly this artist's most important work.

Chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal with the funeral monument by Antonio Rossellino

Chapel of the Crucifix by Michelozzo with a panel by Agnolo Gaddi

The Renaissance Chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal (1461-66) in the lefthand nave was built by Brunelleschi's pupil Antonio Manetti for Jacopo di Lusitania, the Cardinal Archbishop of Lisbon, who died in Florence in 1459. The five medallions on the ceiling are by Luca della Robbia, while the chapel itself contains a fresco of the Annunciation by Alessio Baldovinetti (1466-67), a panel and frescoes of Angels in flight by Antonio e Piero del Pollaiolo. The marble funeral monument was carved by Antonio Rossellino. A contribution by the great artist Paolo Uccello can be found in the cloister: remains of the frescoes of Scenes from the lives of the Holy Fathers (1440 c.), painted in the upper loggia. The Monumental Cemetery (known as "the Holy Gates") outside the Basilica is also well worth a visit; it was carried out in the last century in the conventual area, inside the fortified enclosure created by Michelangelo in 1529. Designed by architect Nicolò Matas during the period in which he was working on the facade of Santa Croce, it contains the remains of many celebrities like Papini, Montale, Stibbert, Villari and Lorenzini (known as "il Collodi", the creator of Pinocchio). The various family chapels belonging to the Florentine bourgeoisie can be said to represent a real repertoire of the city architecture of the time: Liberty, Art Deco, Rationalism and organic architecture.

Mattia Corvino

at the Court of the King of Hungary

Museo di San Marco Piazza San Marco, 1 Tel. 055.294883 www.unannoadarte.it

The exhibition sets out to reconstruct some of the contacts that played a crucial role in determining the Hungarian court's cultural and artistic choices. Thus it will illustrate the trends in the king's taste, setting them against the backdrop of the Florentine context of his time, while also endeavouring, by drawing a number of parallels, to identify the possible influence on those choices exercised by Lorenzo the Magnificent and his entourage of thinkers and artists. In this context, special attention will be devoted to the libraries of Matthias Corvinus and of Lorenzo the Magnificent, and thus pride of place will be given to the precious illuminated codices commissioned by Matthias Corvinus for his library, now sadly dispersed. Some of these manuscripts, which remained unfinished in Florence on Matthias' death, were subsequently purchased by the Medici.. until january 6th.

Izis

Poet of Photography The exhibition dedicated to Izis Bidermanas, showing a selection of about 120 photographs and the screening of the film entitled “Aperçus d’une vie (Scorci di vita)”, is a chance to discover something really new, as well as find out more about the intense activity of this author; he is considered one of the greatest humanist photographers of the last century and a poet of imagery, portraitist and reporter who, after being exiled from Lithuania as a young man, tried to find rest in the ‘Paris of his dreams’. Years later his photographs, sharply defined by the light and with a particularly sensitive atmosphere, are always evidence of great poetry. Although Izis is mentioned in all histories of photography, was selected for the Five French Photographers exhibition (with Brassai, Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau and Ronis) at the MoMa in 1951 and has written many books, which are considered timeless models of reference, he is still, even today, little known as an artist to the general public. until January 6th. Citato in tutte le storie della fotografia, selezionato nel 1951 per la mostra al MoMa Five French Photographers con Brassai, Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau e Ronis e autore di molti libri considerati modelli intramontabili di riferimento, Izis resta ancora oggi un artista poco conosciuto al grande pubblico. fino al 6 gennaio MNAF - Museo Nazionale Alinari della fotografia Piazza S. Adopting a totally new approach to the topic, Civic Art in Florence from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance focuses on works of art from the communal and republican eras originally commissioned to adorn the public buildings of Florence – the buildings that housed the magistracies tasked with running the city, the halls of the various Arti, or guilds, and the city walls. The exhibition covers such themes as civic heraldry, religion and the city, representative public buildings such as the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo del Podestà and the church of Orsanmichele, and the political parties that lorded it over the city (the House of Anjou, the Arti, the Guelfs and the Ghibellines), illustrating the figurative themes they chose and offering visitors a new key to understanding the numerous works of art themselves by underscoring the importance of images in the propaganda and communication strategy of the groups which ruled the city in the era of the Commune and the Republic before the rise of the Medici family changed the city for good from both a political and an aesthetic standpoint. This extraordinary event is the result of an exchange between the two important French and Italian museums. In fact, as a sign of good will, the Musée d’Orsay has loaned these 12 Impressionist masterpieces to repay the Gallery of Modern Art for its important contribution towards the organisation of the “Les Macchiaioli. Des Impressionnistes italiens?" exhibition, which was held last year at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, from April 10th to July 22nd. The two Degas, two Monets, two Cezannes, two Renoirs, two Pissarros and the Fantin Latour, as well as a work by Paul Guigou, on display in the show can suggest further forms of study and research able to highlight any possible contamination between the two cultures, French and Tuscan, which could also have been an essential point of reference for the artistic experiences of the twentieth century in Italy. until january 5th.

The Feast of the Tuscany marks the anniversary of the important Penal Reform Bill or Leopoldine Code, created by Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Inspired by the theories of Cesare Beccaria it abolished the death penalty for the very first time (November 30th 1786). It was soon copied elsewhere in Europe. Celebrations start in the afternoon with the historic pageant of the Florentine Republic from Palagio di Parte Guelfa to the Tuscan Regional Council in Via Cavour. Here it is joined by the authorities before returning to Piazza Signoria where a bonfire is lit to symbolise death at the stake. At 5pm, all the church bells throughout Tuscany are rung. In Florence the great bell of the Marzocco in the Bargello also tolls, an event normally reserved only for very solemn occasions. november 30th.

Paul Lydka Chef Concierge Hotel Four Seasons +39 055.26261 introduces

Definitely one of the must-see sights in Florence: it’s the famous Cappella dei Magi decorated by Benozzo Gozzoli in 1459-60 as a private place of worship for the Medici family in their newly built palazzo in via Larga (now via Cavour). The chapel is on the piano nobile of the palace, and was one of the first decorations executed after the completion of the edifice by Michelozzo. Gozzoli painted his cycle over three of the walls, the subject being the Journey of the Magi to Bethlehem, a virtually never-ending train of followers surrounds the Three Wise Men on their way to Bethlehem, but the religious theme was a pretext to depict the procession of important people who arrived in Florence in occasion of the Council of Florence (1439). The Medici could boast to have favoured the reconciliation between the Catholic and the Byzantine churches. The luxury of the Byzantine dignitaries is manifest, and shows the impression they would have at the time on the Florentine population. Over a landscape depicted in incredible detail and probably influenced by Early Netherlandish artists (perhaps through tapestries), Gozzoli portrayed the members

of the Medici family riding in the foreground of the fresco on the wall at the right of the altar. A young Lorenzo il Magnifico leads the procession on a white horse, followed by his father Piero the Gouty and the family founder, Cosimo. Then come Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta and Galeazzo Maria Sforza, respectively lord of Rimini and Milan: they did not take part in the Council, but were guests of the Medici in Florence in the time the frescoes were painted.

After them is a procession of illustrious Florentines, such as the humanists Marsilio Ficino and the Pulci brothers, the members of the Art Guilds and Benozzo himself. The painter can be recognized for he is looking towards the observer and for the scroll on his red hat, reading Opus Benotii. On the following wall, the bearded character on a white horse is the Byzantine emperor John VIII Palaiologos; the three girls next to him have been identified as the three daughters of Piero de’ Medici, Nannina, Bianca and Maria. Finally, on the wall to the left of the altar are Pope Pius II, portrayed as an old man on a mule, preceded by Lorenzo’s elder brother, Giuliano, carrying a leopard on his horse. In the same scene can be seen theJoseph, Patriarch of Constantinople and other Byzantine dignitaries, surrounded by exotic animals, such as a lynx and a falcon. Visitors can only enter the chapel in tiny groups that can stay there for seven minutes, during which one cannot help feeling daunted by the several hundred square feet of lavishly detailed frescos. But here’s the good news: a unique multimedia system has just been installed to complement the visit by helping visitors learn and familiarize with the hidden meanings of the scene and characters before they proceed to the chapel itself. users can interact in a truly natural way with multimedia audio and video contents:

Tuscan Olive Oil

Freshly milled

November marks the harvesting of the olives. It is usually hard and backbreaking work and not helped by the first winter rains and cold north winds. You can volunteer to help if you like...but it is really only enjoyable on sunny days! What is fun is going to watch the oil being milled. This is not as hard as it sounds as the frantoi or oil mills are open to all during the harvest as people gradually bring in varying quantities of olives for milling. Snacks and even meals are often of offer to help clients pass the time while wait-

ing for their oil to be ready, so there is no reason why you should not partake of the repast too! The traditional method for milling olives is by placing them on a large, circular block of granite, where they are crushed by two turning

20 minutes later the olives have been transformed into an oily pulp. This is spread out on round mats of woven hemp, each with a hole in the middle, which are stacked on a spindle and placed under an increasing pressure to extract the oil and juice that collects at the base. The first oil is considered superior to that extracted at the end of the process. Waste water and sediments are separated from the oil, either by successive decanting or centrifuge. Olive oil does not improve with age, it simply mellows, and the pungent aroma and the vivid taste of the freshly pressed greenish oil gradually turns golden yellow to acquire a velvety texture. A good extra virgin oil should stay fairly fresh for a year or more if properly stored in cool place. The deliciously tasting Tuscan oil is particularly low in acid content and therefore better for you, though the flavour can vary according to where the olives are grown, climate and so on. It can be peppery, fruity, full-bodied, or mild with underlying scents of grass, artichokes or wild herbs, certainly it should be flavoursome and not just oily. Watch out for wine and oil fairs, especially in the country (Reggello, Calenzano, Barberino Val d’Elsa), in early November. You can taste some excellent and often very reasonably priced oils (taste several to decide which you like best). Dribble it over a slice of Tuscan bread or, better still, toast rubbed with garlic, add some salt and go with the flavour...

The Trattoria 4 Leoni, situated in Piazza della Passera, offers the sort of welcome that we would expect to find in the homes of old friends. The furnishings are in the typical Tuscan traditions, plain yet refined, with straw-bottomed chairs and marble-topped tables. Mine host Stefano Di Puccio is held in high esteem in the city for his sporting history as a player in the “Historic Florentine Football Matches”, but also for the genuine hospitality that can be found in his restaurant and for quality of his cooking. Platters in the true Tuscan tradition emerge from the kitchen, from the mythical Huge Fry-Up (fried chicken, rabbit and vegetables) and the steaks, always excellent, to the famous Impruneta Peposo (peppery stew) or the delicious 4 Leoni Salad; all of them dishes for gourmets! We must not forget to mention the desserts, all homemade, like the pear and chocolate cake, the apple tart or the cheese cake; or else there are the popular Prato Cantuccini (almond biscuits) to dip in the Holy Wine. The wines are all of excellent quality and can also be ordered by the glass. Outside dining under a white marquee and surrounded by pots of sweet-melling bay trees is possible in the summer months. The quality of the cooking, the care taken over details and service, together with the simple and genuine atmosphere, make the 4 Leoni a symbolic nightspot for all the Florentines and ... Piazza della Passera in the Spring is a really wonderful sight. Piazza della Passera Tel. 055.218562 www.4leoni.com

Trattoria Omero is one of the historic sites in Florentine catering. Its ideal position on the hill only five minutes from the city centre and its friendly and peaceful environment make it a meeting point for personalities of culture and the cinema. Its success is due to the quality of the cooking that offers traditional Tuscan dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients and cooked with wisdom and passion. The two large dining rooms are furnished in a traditional but elegant fashion with a large picture window over Florence that gives the restaurant a very special light... and on summer evenings it is possible to dine on the splendid terrace and enjoy an enchanting view over the hills. Trattoria Omero is a unique opportunity to enjoy moments of true pleasure at the table and enjoy excellently cooked but simple dishes. The menu follows the rhythm of the seasons, while the dishes are prepared using selected fresh produce of top quality and include fresh home made pasta, pappardelle with hare ragout, grilled meats, fried platters, Florentine steaks, specialities based on game, desserts, which are always home made, and many other delicacies. The Cantina houses over 300 selected wines: classic Italian and international wines and all the fines Tuscan labels. The service is attentive, friendly and never intrusive. Time seems to have stood still at Omero’s as, although the restaurant has stood here for decades, it still manages to keep its reputation and perhaps this is why its customers get attached to it and come back again and again, because they know they will always find original flavours and simplicity. Florian

Historic Caffè Florian, founded in 1720 in Piazza S. Marco in Venice, has now found its natural outlet in Florence with the opening of this new and exclusive location, where a prestigious café and innovative catering blend together with Contemporary Art. The Florian Art Collection has organised a permanent display of works by Mimmo Rotella, Fabrizio Plessi, Gaetano Pesce and Bruno Ceccobelli, to mention just a few of the many artists who have created exclusive works for the Florian in Venice over the years. These art works are now here in Florence to pay tribute to the tradition in style, elegance and refinement that has made Florian a myth-like place throughout the world. Here clients can find a truly exclusive environment and an impeccable service in the classical Café and in the Restaurant, specialised in Venetian and Italian cuisine. Inspired by the classical light dishes and traditional desserts and parfaits, the Chef offers some really superlative platters created with top quality raw materials. The recipes are in fact all based on the finest Italian products and include really fresh fish, meat, first courses and starters, as well as the typical Venetian savoury croutons. The idea is to maintain all the flavour and natural taste of the best ingredients of the season and thus create excellent but traditional dishes that are however continuously renewed, with the addition of special touches that are both original and cosmopolitan. It is possible to enjoy an aperitif (spritz, delicious cocktails, special wines), a really good coffee, chocolate, the traditional and elegant afternoon tea, snacks, Venetian savoury croutons and exquisite pastries, all signed by Florian at any time of the day. Do not miss the special Venetian aperitif, every evening after 6pm, where you can enjoy faithful reproductions of the original Florian recipes for Spritz, Bellini and Negroni, accompanied by traditional salted cod, cod stew, a selection of Venetian dressed meats and cheeses served with home made jams prepared by the Chef and various types of fingerfood. Lungarno Bistrot

The “LUNGARNO BISTROT” restaurant has just opened in a splendid setting on the Lungarno Guicciardini, right opposite historic Palazzo Corsini, and, with its large outside veranda, gives onto a beautiful view of the Arno. The lounge bar can be found in the entrance hall and is perfect for aperitifs and after dinner drinks, though the highlight of the restaurant is its large open-plan kitchen, where you can watch the chefs prepare all the dishes and home made pasta (it is one of the few restaurants in the city centre where the pasta is home produced as well as bread and desserts by the chefs). The first course includes pici, gnocchi, ricotta and spinach ravioli, stuffed tortelli, tagliolini and tagliatelle, as well as special dishes every day with products of the season! Fresh products make up the principal raw materials for our cuisine. All the various dishes are characterised by carefully selected products, all of top quality, while our chefs’ love of simple and genuine cooking can be seen with the many plants of fresh herbs growing on the small balcony off the kitchen. The menu includes typical dishes of Tuscan tradition (Florentine T-bone steak, just to give an example), as well as other platters creatively prepared by our chefs (like mousse of cod or potato and salmon quiche). The dessert course is also most important as it provides the perfect ending to any special meal. All the desserts are made right here in the kitchen and include tiramisu (made on order), mille-feuille with chantilly whipped cream, upside down apple tart, chocolate soufflé and a wide variety of fancy biscuits.
