Ben Nevis Angus ‘Mingary’, Walcha NSW 2354 bennevisangus@bigpond.com www.bennevisangus.com.au
Welcome to our 2023 sale. Please take note that it’s a week and a half earlier due to some commitments Hap has with her Angus Australia President role.
We have kept our bull numbers in the sale the same over the last few years but have made a massive investment in ET over that time to turbo-charge the effect of our elite cow families. With the help of some terrific people including Udo Mahne (Embryo Life), Annie Vivers (Beefmark Breeding Services) and the Bulloch family at Braidwood we have hatched hundreds of exciting embryo calves over the last few years from our acclaimed Jean, Geranium and Celeste lines. At the same time we have joined similarly bred lines of females the same way to give our clients more flexibility to get the genetics they want. In this way if the bull of their choice gets out of their means then he will have ¾ or full brothers in the sale.
Our aim is to combine our traditional quality with elite performance genetics so that our clients can target the premium quality markets and brands. This means for us that their progeny grow and finish early and easily maintain a marble score 3 while not losing the type and traits that have made the breed so successful and enjoyable to own.
18 MONTH OLD BULLS
The 18 month old bulls are excellent in their type and power and offer smart buying for those people who want all the benefits of yearling bulls in terms of lower break down rates and longer working lives but who want slightly older bulls with ¾ of their growing already achieved. There is an impressive run of ET sons by two stunning daughters of the $82,000 Ben Nevis Jean H215. These include Jean N238’s run of heavy muscled, slick coated sons by Musgrave Exclusive and Jean M30’s run of stylish sons of Baldridge Forecaster. We also feature a terrific line of easy doing, deep sided sons of Ben Nevis Quantico. Quantico was the $40,000 top price bull from our 2020 Sale to Bowmont Angus, and we also have some standouts from our proven Kirkby son Te Mania Pythagorus who will inject IMF and growth.
The true yearling bulls are the best Spring group we have ever produced and they hit a sweet spot combining the type and quality we are known for with extra carcase under the hide. There are a number of stud prospects in them. The real benefits of the true yearlings (on top of the reduced incidence of breakdown), is their ability to acclimatise to your environment and that they are easier to handle. Every yearling bull in this sale has been independently assessed to have a 1 for temperament. Our feedback is that they maintain this easy going nature throughout their working life. They have been very popular and successful with our long term clientele (including those in arid environments), and we highly recommend them.
Our new Stud Sire Ben Nevis Rambo features in the yearlings and he makes the most impressive debut with much hype from those who have them or have seen them. Rambo was the $70,000 top of our 2021 sale selling to a syndicate including Glenmorgan, Banquet, Fernleigh and Koojan Hills. He combines not only our 2 best cow lines but arguably our two best cows including the $82,000 Ben Nevis Jean H215 (owned by Bannaby and Banquet) and Ben Nevis Celeste J121 (owned by Boambee Angus). They offer an outcross pedigree to most with style, thump and IMF.
Rambo’s maternal brother Ben Nevis Podium also feature in the yearlings with some absolute crackers. We also have Paratroopers, Prime Ministers and Pythagorus to round out an exceptional bunch.
With the US and South American cow herds as low as they are and the rising global demand for beef (especially in China), Australia is in the box seat to capitalise and secure increasing long term market share on the back of our quality and our clean, green image. With the long term prospects for both the Angus and Angus x Wagyu job looking very solid it makes a lot of sense to invest in quality Angus females now whether by breeding them or if you are fortunate now to trade into them. Thankyou for taking the time to consider out program, please contact us if you have any questions or to arrange a visit,
Stu and Hap Halliday and family From left: Jack Halliday, Cherry Steel, Erica Halliday, Maggie Halliday and Stu HallidayWe take great pride in our reputation for quiet cattle. The bulls have been handled with bikes, dogs, horses and on foot. Under normal circumstances they are of sound temperament and we ask that you treat them with kindness and respect, especially under the pressures of sale day.
The bulls are ready for immediate use and we recommend using a 12 – 14 mo yearling at a rate of 1 bull to 35, and a 16 – 18 mo bull at usual rates of 1 to 50. All bulls have been tested PI (pestivirus) negative and vaccinated with 7-in-1 (Lepto), Pestiguard and Vibriosis. They have had regular doses of Vitamin A,D,E, Vitamin B12 and drenched with Eprinex Pour on and Fasinex Oral on 15 June 2023.
We are happy to blood bulls and give three day vaccine for bulls sold to Queensland, and will work in with you for the best delivery time so they adapt.
FERTILTY POLICY YEARLING BULLS: developed in conjunction with Chris Hallet BVSt MCSt and Millah Murrah, written by Ross Thomson. We have led the way with yearling bulls and believe vehemently their use is key to increased farm gate profitability. We have adopted this policy with reference to two other who share similar views, Millah Murrah’s Ross Thompson and Chris Hallett of Coolah Vet Clinic.”. Bulls are vet checked by Chris Hallett of Coolah Vet Clinic, including penis examination, palpation of reproductive organs and visual inspection of structure and locomotion.
At the same time, a crush side test for semen motility is conducted. A semen sample is then sent to the Queensland Sperm Morphology Laboratory for analysis.
All bulls in the 18 month and two-year categories have presented greater than 70% normal sperm, except when noted on the supplementary information sheet, provided on sale day.
For the yearlings, the satisfactory morphology threshold is lowered, simply due to maturity. Yearling bulls presenting 50-70% normal sperm, and showing adequate rates of improvement from multiple tests, will be included in the sale with their % normal sperm indicated on the supplementary sheet. It is important to note that they are considered ready for work at point of sale.
As in previous years, there will be some yearlings for whom it is not possible to obtain a satisfactory semen sample ahead of the sale. While it is unlikely that they are infertile, we prefer to be sure, before delivering them to their new home. And rather than withdraw them from sale, we sell them with the following options available to the purchaser:
1. Free delivery guaranteed by 20 October, pending a satisfactory semen test result, with no payment due until this time or,
2. In the event the bull fails the retest, the buyer may,
a. withdraw from the sale altogether,
b. retain the option to purchase the bull pending a satisfactory result at an agreed future date, or
c. elect to take a satisfactory replacement, delivered free of charge by 20 October, with price negotiated privately, no higher than the auction price of the original bull.
The sale supplementary sheet will clearly identify any bulls presented for sale under these delayed terms.
COMMENT: Some studs do not conduct any form of semen testing, and many do not carry out morphology analyses, even for two-yearold sale bulls. Morphology analysis of genuine yearling bulls is rare. Semen testing is a vexed area, and we make no judgement on what another stud does in that regard. The reason some studs, including Millah Murrah and Ben Nevis, choose to undertake semen morphology testing is that, very occasionally, it will identify a permanent issue that cannot be found by a thorough vet examination or crush side testing. It is important to understand that semen testing is not a “silver bullet” guarantee of the long-term fertility or infertility of a bull. It is no more than a “point in time” examination. Testing six weeks apart, invariably reveals failed bulls that pass and passed bulls that fail.
Above all, during mating season, be sure to check the bulls properly each week at least. And in single sire situations, always endeavor to rotate the bulls between mobs midway through the season.
We sell the semen marketing rights along with the bull at sale. We shall however retain the right to collect up to 600 straws of semen from bulls nominated in the catalogue with our elite logo for in herd use only, OR for our own commercial progeny tests. Ben Nevis will collect semen at the vendors expense and the purchasers convenience. Where possible this semen will be collected pre-sale.
The vendor warrants that;
Bulls are fertile and capable of natural service within six months of the date of sale to the purchaser (Warranty period).
The vendor will either:
1. Provide a satisfactory replacement; or
2. Provide a credit for us at the next Ben Nevis Bull Sale equal to the purchase price (excluding any costs and expenses of the purchaser in taking delivery), minus the salvage value.
Where:
1. The purchaser claims a bull is infertile, upon purchaser submitting two x veterinary reports ten weeks apart stating the bull is infertile (semen) OR one x Veterinary Report stating the bull is incapable of natural service, and a Statutory Declaration by the purchaser to the effect that the substance of the report is true and correct. The Veterinarian must state that in their opinion there is no evidence that the bull has suffered any injury or illness (or infection) during the Warranty Period which could have affected his breeding ability. The Veterinary Report and the Statutory Declaration must be forwarded to the vendor within 14 days of the Warranty Period expiring.
On arrival at their new home it is important a suitable mob of animals is yarded to greet the bull to minimise stress. Suitable animals include pregnant cows, steers but certainly not other bulls.
The bulls are in good working condition at the point of Sale, but it is imperative to ensure good nutrition for the bull during the joining period.
You should check bulls regularly to see that they are working, especially in the early stages when most problems occur and early intervention can minimise damage to the bull and conception rates. After joining, bulls should be drenched and placed on good pasture to get back in condition.

All the sale bulls have been screened for temperament and are quiet to handle under normal circumstances; however there are inherent risks associated with cattle handling.
VISITORS ENTER THE CATTLE PENS AT THEIR OWN RISK. CHILDREN MUST NOT ENTER THE YARDS.
People entering the yards are at risk of injury. Be especially alert for bulls fighting. We do not expect the bulls to be aggressive with humans, but Sale Day places extraordinary pressure on them. Remember, even the quietest bull is in fact an unpredictable animal. Do not crowd the bulls or loiter inside the pens. We cannot cover every example of the dangers of cattle handling so please use common sense and be alert at all times. Please call on any of the Landmark Agents for an escort through the bulls if required.
All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and the vendor assumes no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.

While we are utilising the latest BREEDPLAN and Genomics technologies to enhance the value of our beef under the hide you will often hear us talk about type.
Before the advent of genetic evaluation, type was the main determinant (along with breed) to identify eating quality. These traits, while highly heritable, are subjective but they are a particularly important feature of our brand and give us an important edge in quality that we take great pride in. We believe type is just as important today as it was then to balance our breeding approach and ensure we do not lose those ‘hard to measure’ traits for which the Angus breed is famous. These include constitution, doing ability, structure and balance.
The perfect Angus head should be broad with good hooding to protect the eye and have a wide jaw and strong muzzle. The width of their jaw will be reflected in the width of their whole body structure which is especially important through the hips and pins for calving ease. As Bruce Steel used to say ‘the difference between a narrow and wide muzzle is like the difference between eating with a shovel or a teaspoon’.
This is one of our main physical selection traits. An animal with good type will have a naturally uplifted head and there is no better single measure of structure. A lifted head and long neck reflects a shoulder angle that will allow for calving ease and natural movement thus allowing longevity.
In all our sires we chase a strong spine coupled with a proportionately longer hip to pin ratio to fortify strength of spine and strength of loin. The most valuable cuts are along the spine and we want them to have the least work to stay tender and be supported. We have been extremely disappointed in the recent influx of swampy backed bulls, with short hip-pin and high tail set that seem popular in the States.
This is a key indicator for structural correctness. Animals should be proportionally longer from hip to pin and have a slight downward slope to facilitate calving ease. This reinforces the strength of the overall top line and gives the animal more balance. Too much slope is reflected by sickled hocks, low pasterns, and long feet while a shorter hip to pin combined with the pins being higher than the hip leads to even more debilitating conditions. These include a shallower, weaker loin with more pressure on the spine leading to smaller EMA and breakdown, straighter angles through the hocks and pasterns leading to injury and arthritis.
Who cares? We do. After Stu working 15 years in the Dairy Industry as a vet, it became very obvious that the cows with their tail sets higher and more up their back were more prone to uterine infection as they were continually defecating into their vulva. On top of this, it comes hand-in-hand with a short hip to pin and swampy back and is found in harder doing animals.
You will often hear us talk about skin and it is one of the highestranking physical selection criteria we employ. We have measured and selected for it for years. Skin is an old timer’s indicator for beef quality and tenderness and is measured by us in two forms, with the finer the skin and the softer/finer the hair correlating highly with scanned IMF. Animals with the better skin types are also those that clean up and re-breed faster coming into Spring joining. Angus Australia is currently researching skin type and its implications. In the same way, extra skin along the throat indicates easy doing animals.
We chase a good deep rib and body as an indicator of a cow’s constitution. These cows perform better for us during our harsh annual winters and droughts. As my Dad would explain they have a bigger vat and so can ruminate more efficiently.
On bulls and females, long or course hairs anywhere under the udder/scrotum area, up through the escutcheon or flicking along the outer thighs indicate poor doers. The udder and the seat of their pants must be clean with wider spades (the hair going in the opposite direction) either side of the tail to result in better doing ability and easier milking.
A deep flank (preferably one deeper than their girth) that ties deeper into the animal’s quarter is an indicator of doing ability and allows for a greater volume of muscle and weight in the hindquarter and stifle area.
We prefer a flatter bone as an indicator of efficiency and tenderness. These are animals that do better on grass without the benefit of a grain diet. Rounder boned animals such as European breeds are higher yielding but have lower meat quality and are harder to fatten.
Not too big or too small with a claw and set score between 5 and 6. We applaud Angus Australia’s recent developments to simplify these scores and integrate the use of genomics. There have been many unsuitable bulls allowed into the country in the last 10-15 years and this is something we are committed to getting right and we score and cull our animals annually for feet.
We go for volume of muscle consistent with an Angus type and avoid very heavily expressed muscle types as they are generally harder doers and tougher to eat. Volume of muscle comes with width and length but can be complemented with overall softness.
This is our single most important selection criteria where we have no room for compromise. Quieter cattle not only make life safer and more enjoyable but they have been proven better doers with better meat quality. The feedback we get from our clients regarding the good temperament of our cattle is something we are most proud of. Life is too short to deal with cranky cattle.

We have led the way with yearling bulls and believe vehemently their use is key to increased farm gate profitability.
1. Yearling bulls are out working while they are still relatively light and agile, so they are less likely to hurt themselves. Just as importantly, they are less likely to damage your valuable heifers or cows.
2. Yearling Bulls fight less, so are less likely to get injured by accident or misfortune. Why? Well they are out working when they reach sexual maturity instead of being run with a mob of bulls to grow out to two years of age. As a result we believe they don’t learn the bullying and riding behaviour that often occurs in bull mobs from 18 – 24 months of age with sexual frustration. We get overwhelming feedback from our clients that the bulls used first as yearlings are easier to manage both in and out of the cows and in their bull mobs.
Not everyone can produce yearling bulls as they need to be well grown and sexually mature when they first go out. This is our speciality and we have been growing and using yearling bulls for over 30 years.
Join him with up to 35 head or at 3% in the first year and up normally thereafter. That first 35 head will be a bonus for you plus the other calves he gets from a longer working life. He will look his worst after the first joining as he has been working and growing at the same time but don’t worry his sex life won’t kill him and as long as you put him in a good paddock and treat him for pests and disease he will eventually grow out to be the dashing bull he was born to be.
Please read our Fertility Policy on Page 3. We have adopted this policy with reference to two others who share similar views, Millah Murrah’s Ross Thompson and Chris Hallett of Coolah Vet Clinic. The policy itself was written by Ross.
Don’t put him out in group joining with older bulls for his first joining. Join him either on his own or with a group of yearlings. For all enquiries, questions or problems, please call Stu on 0417 674 412.
Average EBVs from all 2022 drop calves
Selecting the right bull for your business needs to be as easy as possible. So we have incorporated percentiles into our catalogue as an extra tool to help you.
A percentile value allows you to see where an animal sits in the breed for each trait. This gives you more information that an EBV figure alone. For example, if an animal sits in the 30th percentile for IMF it means it is in the top 30% of the breed. But, if an animal sits in the 80th percentile it means that 80% of animals are better than it. Generally the lower the percentile figure the better, except in the case of some traits where moderation or balance is preferred like Mature Cow Weight and Scrotal Size (can be too big), or BW (too small and frail at birth).
The 600 day weight of this bull sits in the 80th percentile, meaning 80% of animals are better than him for the trait.
For more information on BREEDPLAN and how to use it go to: www.angusaustralia.com.au/tace/understanding-angus-tace/understanding-ebvs/
ATTENTION BUYER: Animal details included in this catalogue, including but not limited to pedigree, DNA information, Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and Index values, are based on information provided by the breeder or owner of the animal. PRIVACY INFORMATION: In order for Angus Australia to process the transfer of a registered animal in this catalogue, the vendor will need to provide certain information to Angus Australia and the buyer consents to the collection and disclosure of that information by Angus Australia in certain circumstances. If the buyer does not wish for his or her information to be stored and disclosed by Angus Australia, the buyer must complete a ‘Buyers Option to Opt Out of Disclosing Personal Information to Angus Australia’ form and forward it to Angus Australia. If the form is not completed, the buyer will be taken to have consented to the disclosure of such information.
The IMF of this bull sits in the 30th percentile, meaning he sits in the top 30% of the breed for this trait.
The animals listed within this catalogue including its pedigree, are displaying a Parent Verification Suffix which indicates the DNA parent verification status that has been conducted on the animal. The Parent Verification Suffixes that will appear at the end of each animal’s name.
The suffix displayed at the end of each animal’s name indicates the DNA parentage verification that has been conducted by Angus Australia.
PV both parents have been verified by DNA.
SV the sire has been verified by DNA.
DV the dam has been verified by DNA.
# DNA verification has not been conducted.
E DNA verification has identified that the sire and/or dam may possibly be incorrect, but this cannot be confirmed conclusively.
The two summaries for both 18 month old in blue and 12 month bulls in green are different contemporary groups and their scan data was taken on different dates and they were raised under different conditions – they should not be compared as such.
This is an EBV summary only and another group run (the Mid August TACE Analysis) will have occurred between now and the sale so please go on to Auctionsplus or Angus Tech to get the latest EBV’s.
In regards to $Indexes and Claw and Angle Scores for each bull we have listed their percentile bands as opposed to their EBV’s as our clients have given us feedback that that is much easier to understand.
Scans were taken on 10 June 2022 for the 18 month bulls, and on 29 July 2022 for the 12 month bulls by Roger Evans (Accredited Assessor Number 1018).
Visual Coat Scores were assessed. Selecting animals for a sleeker coat may increase their adaptability. Coat Scores are recorded on a 1 – 6 scale, with 1 being sleek and 7 being woolly. Coast Score 1 is extremely short and found in some Bos Indicus and some of their crossbreds.

With all the bull we use we make sure that they are backed by a special cow family that is highly regarded. This explains why over 70% of our catalogue has maternal grandsire that goes back to our own stable. Our family have been fine tuning these cow families for over 75 years. We know them, trust them and they have given us not only a boost in quality but consistency as well.
We invested in Pythathorus with good friends Ben Hill from Bulliac and Rob Bulle from Ardrossan. We were all looking for a sire to boost marbling that was free of Berkley and Regent bloodlines. Pythagorus has exceeded our expectations producing bigger framed, progeny that have scanned for IMF true to their potential.
Forecaster is from a trusted stable for us in the Baldridge herd. We love best the way he stamps a good, masculine head on his bull calves giving them a real sire presence with a freaky length of body.
We saw a video of Exclusive and were sold once we saw his skin like mercury, and his combination of natural thickness, softness and mobility. We appreciate the commitment that Musgrave has made to quality and structural integrity.
MILLAH MURRAH PARATROOPER P15
He comes from one of the best cow herds in the country and he does them proud. His progeny are highly sought after because of their expressive muscle pattern, skin, structural correctness and temperament.
BEN NEVIS METAMORPHIC M51
Metamorphic sold for $32,000 for us in 2017 to a syndicate including Banquet, Fernleigh and Twin Oaks and has created sale toppers for them and other herds both here in Australia and New Zealand. He produces extra muscularity and proud outlooks as well as fine skins on his progeny with the influence of Bartel’s carcase under the hide.
BEN NEVIS PODIUM P242
Podium is the maternal brother to the $70,000 Ben Nevis Rambo and we kept him as a walking sire for the stud. His progeny are standouts –they have exceptional muscularity often with bulls and steers ending up with a B muscle score. He has a beautiful nature, strong spine and transmits both carcase and maternal excellence. Unfortunately we lost him in an accident earlier this year so we value the progeny we have.
Quantico sold to Bowmont Angus in our 2020 sale for a top of $40,000. He combines the very best of Infinity and Beast Mode genetics to offer extra depth and softness to his progeny with an expansive rib and real weight for age performance. He features strongly in the 18mo section of the catalogue with some star lots.
BEN NEVIS RAMBO R230
Rambo sold in our 2021 sale for $70,000 to Glenmorgan, Banquet, Koojan Hills and Fernleigh. He combines not only our two best cow lines but arguably our two best cows including the $82,000 Ben Nevis Jean H215 (owned by Bannby and Banquet) and Ben Nevis Celeste (owned by Boambee Angus). Rambo makes a stunning debut in the true yearling section of the catalogue. There is much hype from those who have them in the syndicate or have seen them as he is a marbling sire that offers a show stopping phenotype, an outcross pedigree for most and superb thump and thickness. Every son of his scored a 1 for temperament.
DUNOON PRIME MINISTER P758
Prime Minister is breeding well across Australia transmitting incredible docility and performance and great feet. We used him in a flush to add extra IMF into our M72 line while doubling up on power. We also purchased the top price bull at Dunoon, a Prime Minister son named Dunoon Sunstone for $65,000.

We always start the sale with a cracking bull and you cannot go wrong with Trucker. He not introduces the sale but a ripping run of seven full ET brothers in Lots 15, 24, 42, 46, 47 and 74 that showcase the might of our maternal line in Ben Nevis Jean N238. N238 is a full ET sister to industry AI Sire Ben Nevis Newsflash (owned by Bannaby Angus), and daughter of the $82,000 Ben Nevis Jean H215 (owned by Bannaby and Banquet). This run of ET bulls are peas in a pod and in the flesh Trucker is upheaded with great sire appeal, a kind face and demeanour, terrific spring of rib, a thumping hindquarter and a beautiful slick coat. He stands down hard on the scales and boasts the fourth highest ADG in his contemporary.

Triumph is the first of five ET full brothers in the sale from the maternal sister of Lot 1's dam in M30 who is again out of the then record $82,000 Ben Nevis Jean H215. Triumph and his brothers contain in their DNA the wealth of maternal genes that the Jeans stamp into their progeny. They never miss. Triumph is a most impressive sire with the extra carcase attributes of Forecaster under his hide who is the sire of the US$250,000 Baldridge Versatile. He is the largest of the ET brothers including Lots 7, 19, 20 and maternal brother in Lot 12. He has extra front extension and ‘look at me presence’ while introducing the natural thickness, slickness and extra body length that they all possess. His three ET sisters rank #2, 3 and 4 in our yearling heifers for type. Super docile with impressive data that places him third highest for IMF, = fifth highest EMA and fifth highest ADG.

In the last two sales Tankers four full ET brothers have averaged $32,000 with Ben Nevis Scorcher S465 selling for equal top price in our 2022 sale of $40,000. In our opinion Tanker is the best yet of these calves with the most impressive skin of any bull in the sale and the third highest ADG. His combination of softness and natural thickness is unsurpassed and he carries the maternal genes of our current #1 ranking donor Ben Nevis Jean N17. His full sister ranks #1 in the yearling heifers. We know BREEDPLAN is a great guide but common sense would tell you that this B- muscle bull that scanned with the highest EMA in his contemporary has some of the muscle markers that genomics is yet to identify. B- muscle, super docile. Note: loves a scratch and has left most of his hair on the pointed branch of a fallen tree in his paddock. Has been treated for lice. It will grow back J

Ben Nevis Tank is an incredibly easy bull to like with an impeccable structure, sire appeal and an extra thump of natural thickness, softness and old fashioned do-ability. He combines a magic combination of carcase and maternal and will transmit a marbling boost while maintaining the broody softness and depth that the Nixon females have given us. He has an extraordinary birth to growth spread for his data set and was the second highest ADG bull in the contemporary. On top of that, he stems from one of our very best cow lines with Donor Ben Nevis Jean L28 who was purchased by Merit Farms at our 2020 Cow Sale for $18,000. Her daughters are pure gold to us and are prolific in this sale having bulls represented as Lots 4, 8, 25,49 and 54. Tank scanned fourth for IMF, third highest EMA, first for P8 fat – he is the full package. Suitable for heifers.

We called this bull Top Shelf because his pedigree is rich in Ben Nevis blood and stacked with quality. He has enormous potential, a terrific stud sires outlook and a superb skin (one of the best in the sale), and this was reflected in his performance at scan time, where he not only scanned second highest for IMF, fourth highest for P8 fat but also had superior IMF fleck (distribution), indicating true quality. His structure is supple and not constrained and will allow him to keep growing into a much bigger bull. He will breed deep, silky coated daughters with a ton of capacity. Pure quality here. Just like his famous dam, grand-dam and sisters it’s hard to take your eyes off this striking bull with his extra presence and style, and in Tradewind’s case an ability to add dimension and scale. He is similar to his full ET brother in Lot 2 in that he will add beautiful skin and transmit maternal superiority as well as growth dimension. He has broken the mould here by upping the ante on carcase traits topping the IMF scan in this large contemporary of 80 bulls and #2 for IMF. Genetics is wonderful but it has a mind of its own so it’s great when our plans come together like this. He is just a delight to handle and comes highly recommended.

Tsunami is a lot of bull and he stands out from the crowd as a result of that. If you got above the bulls and picked them he would be an easy choice. It is unusual to get this level of thickness with this level of softness, and you would say that his muscle is not the hard expressive kind, but the valuable, soft, deep drizzly kind. His pedigree is Ben Nevis royalty and contains (yes surprise), another famous Jean donor – this one H103 who is our highest grossing female of all time and sold for $26,000 to Forres Angus at our 2023 Cow Sale. There is something very special about this bull. He takes your eye in the paddock because of his silky skin, doing ability, capacity and structural correctness. When you get over the top of him he is very wide and full behind the shoulder, stout though the hip and full on the plates. These are all quality traits that are largely being lost to the breed today. His dam is in our Donor pen, she is a super cow and, like him, deep sided, broody and soft. Like his Sire Ton has that magical skin and doing ability and he will grow into a very big bull. He is also super quiet and loves a scratch. His sire Monarch has been utilised in composite breeding programs for North Queensland and his paternal brother Mokoan Salvadore exported to South America. Ton has an exceptional neck and shoulder transition which is smooth and well lain in, with a long neck and body to facilitate calving ease. His calves will then grow like the clappers. Oompa loompa this is a solid boy and we named him Trump Card because bulls like this don’t come along very often. It’s no surprise he has that wonderful cow in his pedigree Nemonaville Bandetta H50 (stems from Forres Burnette A22) – this is exactly why we purchased this cow and while you’ll treasure this bulls progeny. Scanned = second for P8 fat.

Based on scan, pedigree and genomics Tic-Tac will be a great tactic (it’s late at night when I write this so please forgive the bad Dad joke), to fold some extra IMF into your herd. We have always strived to be above average for marbling to ensure our clients have keys to unlock the premium markets and market flexibility. It is important not to compromise type or productive traits when doing this and with the power of Pacific on you can be assured he will perform. He has extra depth of rib and length of spine. His dam is a maternal sister to our $40,000 stud Sire (sold to Bowmont) in Quantico whose sons feature in this sale. Scanned = fifth highest IMF.

Trinidad and his full ET brother Tobago in the next lot are like peas in a pod and they stand out from the general run of bulls because of their their extreme muscularity and shape. He has a really strong, sire head with a broad muzzle and when you get over the top of him, he has an expansive spring of rib and a huge hip. Unlike some heavy muscled cattle, he is deep in the flank and quarter giving him softness and balance. Trinidad and Tobago’s maternal brother Smokin Joe by Fireball sold to Merit Farms last year for $35,000 and has been taken up by ABS. If you missed Trinidad in the previous lot (read his comments) then Tobago offers an even more amazing birth to growth spread than his chunky full brother with the same muscularity and excellent sires head. NOTE AGE DIFFERENCE: these bulls are on average six months younger than Lots 1 – 27 (Autumn drop bulls). They are well grown yearling bulls who are ready to work, semen tested, vet inspected and structurally assessed. Just because he is a yearling doesn't make him a heifer bull, so please continue to check for our recommendations. All of the bulls in the yearling section received a one for temperament which is the highest score they can get independently assessed by Roger Evans (Accreditation No 1018).

We are so excited to present to you this batch of our true yearlings and it was a no-brainer who to start with. Titanium combines not only two of our best cow lines but without a doubt two of our best cows. M72 is the dam who breeds a ‘front rower’ bull after bull. It’s rare to see a hindquarter like this in an Angus bull but unlike other really heavy muscled animals he is free moving, upheaded and easy doing. He covers his billowing muscle with a soft silky wrap and a fine coat and is whisk clean throughout the seat of his pants indicating his maternal attributes to pass on. Tasman’s maternal brother Shrek was one of the stars of our 2022 sale selling to Andrew Dean for $26,000, his maternal sister P117 is a donor in her own right. Not surprisingly he scanned the = second highest EMA, = second highest P8 fat. Independently assessed as a B muscle. Maternal brothers in the sale include Lots 43, 67 and 68 but this is the only one by the exciting new sire Rambo.

Easily one of the pick bulls of the sale and with his show stopping looks balancing his impressive data set this is, in our opinion, a bull worthy of stud attention. A curve bender who in the flesh is the = fifth highest ADG bull in the contemporary with excellent carcase – what a combination! Sometimes extra thickness binds animals up but in Tribunes case he has the correct structure to handle it. His depth and softness and that extra sparkle of pure quality means he will leave you with females to treasure. Pedigree wise, his dam’s first calf sold for $18,000 in our 2021 sale with her second calf selling to stud duties with astute breeders Colin and Lisa Keevers at Alumy Creek, NSW for $16,000. Add to all of this he scanned = third for IMF and = fourth for EMA. Semen retained for in herd use. We are very proud of this bull. Suitable for heifers.

He offers pure thump and capacity like no other bull in the sale with an exquisite softness both in skin and doing ability. He has a jaw and head on him that symbolises the rock solid foundation he is built on and those foundations are wrapped in the finest quality flesh. He is beautifully balanced, docile and just a pleasure to be around. He scanned the fattest of all the bulls in his large contemporary and we trust in time with progeny and advances in identifying new markers in genomics that his BREEDPLAN figures will better reflect that. We are pretty chuffed overall with his report card being the equal highest P8 fat, second highest ADG bull in sale, = third highest IMF, = third EMA with a B- muscle. Semen retained for in herd use. Thor has long been the standout bull of this yearling bull contemporary and he has been an easy pick for all those who have seen him. It’s hard for my words to do him justice except to say that of all the bulls in the sale he best combines all the quality and performance traits both in the flesh and on paper that we need to breed cattle that are both profitable and that we are immensely proud of. He is extra long and heavy, with the structural integrity to hold it all together and he finishes it off with the most beautiful Angus head and kind face. He is a complete gentleman. In the contemporary he was third highest ADG, scanned with the highest EMA, equal second highest P8 fat, high MF and a B- muscle. He is slightly later maturing and will continue to grow on to be a magnificent bull and will be a real cow producer as well. He scanned = fifth highest EMA.

Thorin has six full ET brothers in the sale in Lots 1, 15, 24, 46, 47 and 74 and is the consistency in these bull is a real testament to the potency of their beautiful dam N238 who is a full ET sister to widely used stud sire ben Nevis Newsflash owned by Bannaby and the daughter of the $82,000 Ben Nevis Jean M30 owned BY Bannaby and Banquet. Thorin has the same tidy, heavy muscled makeup of his brothers with a proud masculine stance but he will grow into a bigger frame bull than his brothers. His shoulder set up is superb and he packs a punch behind the shoulder which is an area of weakness in most cattle and represents a really valuable cut at the end of the longdissimus dorsi. He really should be further up the Lots. This is a bull with a personality and he is both inquisitive and gentle. Fantastic data-set. He scanned = second P8 fat with a high IMF. Suitable for heifers.

This is the second of four sons of M72 to sell in this sale with his full brothers selling at Lots 67 and 68. She is THE big bull getter in our herd and never misses at creating something special. It’s hard to believe, but Troy was orphaned at one month of age when his recip dam died of grass tetany. Most orphans don’t recover but no-one told Troy that and look at him now, all swagger and muscle and style. His maternal brother Shrek was one of the stars of our 2022 sale selling to Andrew Deans for $26,000, his maternal sister P117 is a donor in her own right. Scanned = fifth EMA.

You’re investing in a combination of docility, carcase and maternal genetics when you consider this bull. His dam stems from the famous Burnett A22, a cow line we have always watched and admired and his Grandam Nemonaville H50 was a freak of nature for being ‘that’ big capacity, easy doing Angus cow that just pumps out the best calf every year. Skin is a real feature of the line and this bull is no exception- he adds in a great strong top line, plus calving ease and growth. He scanned = fourth for EMA which is a phenomenal effort out of such a large contemporary and being one of the youngest. If you miss him he has a close relation in Lot 73.

Tolstoys dad Pythagorus has been an exceptional buy from us as he has been able to give us a boost in IMF without compromising the type and traits we want our cow herd to live by. His pedigree contains big deep females that are easy fleshing with extra IMF under the hide and in the flesh he is, like his maternal grandsire deep sided with a soft slick coat. He adds plenty of performance for growth along with this.

Here comes a run of Exclusives out of the other wing of our Jean line that stems back to our highest grossing cow and most prolific breeder Jean H103. These three brothers offer a more consistent calving ease proposal with a finer front than the N238’s but still carrying the slick coast and muscularity. Tidal in the flesh is proud, balanced and very square. Suitable for heifers. Pictured on page 41.

We have a tremendous soft spot for this beautiful, quiet bull whose mother is a full ET sister to our current #1 ranking donor dam Jean N17 (the dam of Lot 3). N14 died of grass tetany when he was just three months old and yet he managed to steal milk and make it through all the tests to get to the bull sale and just has continued to improve at an enormous rate of knots to even claim some podium finishes for IMF and P8 fat scans showing just how much guts and ticker he has. He has enormous genetic potential that he will fulfil just like his 1100 kg plus maternal brother that sold to Robert Skipworth in King Island. Today we have more science to work with but it’s amazing how reflective those old fashioned traits still are. We love Tomahawke’s pedigree as it combines quality outcross genetics like Judo with our latest young gun genetics in Rambo and he has a data set to match, making him the ideal herd improving bull.

Tartress is an ideal bull for your heifers with a smooth, well laid in shoulder and longer body and neck. This is backed up by his data set and lower actual birthweight in the contemporary while still proving his place in the sale team on his growth. He is a good type of bull with smoothness and balance throughout. Suitable for heifers.

A really stout young bull here that stands down on more bone with a powerful hip. If you like bull’s heads as much as we do then this guy should be on your list. Square, strong and manly it reflects the rest of him. He’s not just handsome, this guy threw down the gauntlet to the bigger bulls in his contemporary when he scanned the = third highest for IMF and = second highest for P8 fat. That’s some serious runs on the board. Suitable for heifers.

Like her Timber shows a rare softness and thickness and is impeccable in his structure. He is one of the younger bulls in the sale but holds his own where performance is concerned and he combines real quality in this pedigree.

We are not surprised that Trev scanned equal 4th highest IMF. The other bull who matched him was Lot 44 and they share the same Grand Dam and their mums are maternal sisters. The theory we have on thin, fine skin is playing out here, with both bulls posting very high IMF scans despite their pedigrees suggesting otherwise and it all comes from the beautiful Nemonaville Bandetta (Burnette A22’s bloodline) we purchased from Nev and Mona Kirkman. In himself he is neat, well balanced and pure quality. Suitable for heifers.

The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation (TACE) is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus infused beef cattle. TACE uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (eg. weight, carcase, fertility).
TACE includes pedigree, performance and genomic information from the Angus Australia and New Zealand Angus Association databases to evaluate the genetics of animals across Australia and New Zealand.
TACE analyses are conducted by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI), using beef genetic evaluation software developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and the University of New England, and Meat and Livestock Australia Limited (MLA).
WHAT IS AN EBV? An animal’s breeding value can be defined as its genetic merit for each trait. While it is not possible to determine an animal’s true breeding value, it is possible to estimate it. These estimates of an animal’s true breeding value are called EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values).
EBVs are expressed as the difference between an individual animal’s genetics and a historical genetic level (ie. group of animals) within the TACE genetic evaluation, and are reported in the units in which the measurements are taken.
USING EBVS TO COMPARE THE GENETICS OF TWO ANIMALS:
TACE EBVs can be used to estimate the expected difference in the genetics of two animals, with the expected difference equating to half the difference in the EBVs of the animals, all other things being equal (eg. they are joined to the same animal/s).
For example, a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +60 would be expected to produce progeny that are, on average, 10kg heavier at 200 days of age than a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +40kg (ie. 20kg difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
Or similarly, a bull with an IMF EBV of +3.0 would be expected to produce progeny with on average, 1% more intramuscular fat in a 400kg carcase than a bull with a IMF EBV of +1.0 (ie. 2% difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
USING EBVS TO BENCHMARK AN ANIMAL’S GENETICS: EBVs can also be used to benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to the genetics of other Angus/Angus infused animals in Australia and New Zealand. To benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to other Angus animals, an animal’s EBV can be compared to the EBV reference tables, which provide:
• the breed average EBV
• the percentile bands table
The current breed average EBV is listed on the bottom of each page in this publication, while the current EBV reference tables are included at the end of these introductory notes.
For easy reference, the percentile band in which an animal’s EBV ranks is also published in association with the EBV.
CONSIDERING ACCURACY: An accuracy value is published with each EBV, and is usually displayed as a percentage value immediately below the EBV. The accuracy value provides an indication of the reliability of the EBV in estimating the animal’s genetics (or true breeding value), and is an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of the EBV.
EBVs with accuracy values below 50% should be considered as preliminary or of low accuracy, 50 – 74% as of medium accuracy, 75 – 90% of medium to high accuracy, and 90% or greater as high accuracy.
DESCRIPTION OF TACE EBVS: EBVs are calculated for a range of traits within TACE, covering calving ease, growth, fertility, maternal performance, carcase merit, feed efficiency and structural soundness. A description of each EBV included in this catalogue is available at www.angusaustralia.com.au

We’ve had a lot of people ask us about our NZ Tuatara side by side that we purchased. Apparently all the cheaper belt driven ones are not made for hills, creeks or carrying a load like ... a tank for spraying weeds. So we did some research to find something that we could actually use at Ben Nevis is ... hills, creeks and ... weeds. It’s a one tonner, can be road registered for between properties, can carry 500kgs, has a winch and is a general beast. Look them up online to get the specs but all I can say is that we all love it – it’s tough, heavy, and goes ... nearly anywhere (except forwards off a loading lamp). If you’re sick of paying more for a side by side than a small car when they break easily, don’t have a heater, radio or bluetooth then this mini hummer will make your day. It’s featured at the end of our Pre Sale video so check them out, and ... if Ben Simpson can’t break it then it’s ... unbreakable.
Ours goes 50-60 km/hr max but is low geared around the paddock and just easy. It is petrol with a tipper and is quiet. They also have an electric they are perfecting that is even quieter and goes faster at top speed. Then again who needs that when you travel in a moving sunroom and the door are glass to the floor so you feel like you’re hovering low and slow in a chopper and seeing everything. It does get hot in summer but you can take off the doors. In Winter in Walcha its divine with the doors on.

We wish successful purchasers all the best with their Ben Nevis yearling bulls. Thank you to our guest auctioneer Paul Dooley for his sound and practical advice, and his ability to judge cattle. Please call Lockie Falls to arrange transport for free delivery to major centres.
The guru out the back working the bulls is our friend and LSS trainer Chook Kealey. Chook grew up on a cattle and farming property in the South Burnett region of Queensland before spending the next eight years training performance horses for a variety of events. North West Queensland was home for the next seven years in a number of roles – from stock camps where helicopter mustering was a weekly occurrence, through to managing large mobs in intensive cell grazing operations.
