WEEK 3 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) When veiwing an architectural structure Le Corbuiser claims that a person can observe it as a purely frontal representation, leading to the idea of the 2-diminsional pictorial space and how it portrays the 3-dimensional built environment. This ideal is significant to the way in which 2d orthagraphic drawings, such as plans and elevations, are turned into 3d axonometrics which present a frontal view of an object or building projected at specific degrees to create depth while remaining to scale.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they?

And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) Le Corbusier’s Paintings in the late modernist period portay their subject matter to the veiwer as an visual analisis of its pictorial space. This direct frontality gives his paintings a degree of flatness despite their attention to details, Corbusier attains this by using mainly variations of colour and form. Instead of using black or dark values which create a sense of depth through contrast, he utilised white lead and lighter values to show shapes. This added to Corbusiers aclaimed mastery of adding detail seperated from their form to the extent of removing the depth they may add but still retaining their connection, were the two main properties in his acheivment of flatness.

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection?

(Maximum 100 words) Perspectival space as a method of portaying a specivic object is purley subjective, both to the interperitations of the veiwer as well as their position in relation to the object, comparativley projections attempt to create a more measurable representation of the object. This causes a dissasociation not existing in persctive spaces as projections are not heavily dependent of the situation of the viewer.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) The Axonometric arose naturally from the devlopment of parralell projection practices throughout history, catering to the need for accurate representations of increasinly complex geometries and arrangments in 3d spaces. This can be seen from the medieavel attempt to create visual driagrams that intergrate scaled dimentsions nececary for seige warfare, through to the intecrite planning of surroundings in the modern world. Due to how axonometrics are still not perfect and are always evoving to include modern technologies and our contempary ideal of what 3d space is, defining the origions of axonometric drawing is difficult to say the least as it can be found across numerous different cultures in their isolated early exstances.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD Completed illustration of the World.

As freedom was granted to design the space created between the two elevations this axonometric is based off of, I descided to create a playable section of a theoretical mario level. While playing Mario all the gamer knows is the charachters movement allong a 2d plane, but I wanted to present a view into the trials mario had to go through to complete levels.

In this world segment mario starts in the upper level after hearing peach call for help at the top of the boss tower and he can decide to go down and enter the tower through the lower level or through a secret pathway blocked off from view.

To manifest this story line in the axo I dispersed the components to form pathways as empty spaces for a playable route through the map. Alowing me to attain a balance between the game and the dimentions necessary in the axo I encoperated a tower to connect my world. This in addition to the diffenet values used to create depth turn the flat 64bit world section into a more tangible, to scale drawing.
