WHAT'S INSIDE May 10-May 23, 2019 // Volume 18, Issue #411

It was a lot of fun talking to Ben Dickey for this issue. A couple of years ago, when it was announced that Ethan Hawke was making a movie about Blaze Foley, the first question any of us had was, “Who’s gonna play him?”. The music biopic has become a big box office draw and more often than not, the casting is cause for argument. I liked that Ben Dickey, an obscure singer-songwriter with no previous acting credit, would be stepping into those duct taped boots. For one, he’d be unencumbered by any previous film work-- but I believed that his own experiences as a musician would be the deciding factor between good and great. I have no doubt that acting, learning that craft, auditions, call-backs, and all the rejection that pursuit must enjoy shares a lot with playing music… But if you’ve never played to the bartender in an empty room or poured your heart & soul into the songs you sing while a handful do their best to talk over you then you can’t understand.

There’s a scene in the movie where Blaze is doing just that. He’d recently arrived in Chicago and was performing in a bar, and his frustration gets the better of him as the room of people ignore the music. I know that scenario intimately, the anger and depression that goes with it. I used to have another drink and trade my personal heartachers for mean-jawed screamers, four-lettered lyrical lariats to throw at the unsuspecting loungers or partiers who wouldn’t pick up what I was puttin’ down.

There are a few gigs that still creep into my thoughts from time to time, and I wonder, “Who was really the a-----e?”

Nothing is easy, kids-- or at least it shouldn’t be. Some people are naturally inclined to certain things, but inherent talent will only get you so far. Whether you turn wrenches, throw or kick a ball, swing a stick or throw a punch, strum a guitar, put 2 ‘n 2 together, throw pie, hoist a hammer, sling drinks or plates, flip burgers or steaks… You’ve got to put in the time and forsake any sense of entitlement. And that ain’t easy. Believe me, I know.

I like people who try, who work, who put forth the effort-- at anything! That’s who I want to be when I grow up-- someone with the will to move forward. I’ve seen hard work and sacrifice pay off for folks who deserved it-- that’s not a myth or a dream. But I’ve seen wasted talent too. Is there anything more frustrating? I’ve got a magnet on my fridge that reads, “Do or do not. There is no try.” Yoda, right? But the older I get and the more I forget in order to relearn, the more I don’t think that’s true. Nobody “does” anything the first time-- and it takes most of us a few times at bat to really comprehend what it takes to get the hit.

So keep swingin’, kids… No matter what they throw at you.

Big Mama had been on the downward slide for a couple years after her life of hard drinkin’. She had lost over 200lbs by the time she played the Old Town School, a small acoustic joint on the North Side of Chicago. She fit in perfectly. A packed house-- and it would be the last time most of the folks there would see her perform. Big Mama, who by then was actually a very Little Mama, would only live another couple months before she passed. She made her name in the ‘50s & ‘60s, she left her mark on the Blues, and gave Elvis “Hound Dog” to start his climb. She died before hittin 60…

Kirk West is a photographer, archivist, and the host of Into The Mystic Wednesday nights at 7pm on 100.9 The Creek. Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition: City Of Hope June 7-21

Up for a road trip to cultural enrichment? Visit Dublin GA invites you to a special exhibition exploring the 1968 movement that put poverty at the forefront as a national human rights issue. City of Hope: Resurrection City & The 1968 Poor People Campaign exhibit is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, City of Hope highlights a series of newly discovered photographs and an array of protest signs and political buttons collected during the campaign. This exhibition, featuring 18 posters will help visitors engage and understand the Poor People’s campaign’s historical significance and present-day relevance.

Each summer the Middle Georgia State School of Aviation hosts a summer aviation camp for kids age 10-14 Registration for the Macon campus SkyCamp dates are July 23-July 25, Eastman campus SkyCamp dates are July 30-August 1. At SkyCamp, students will get to explore the weather, history, and physics of flight; build and launch rockets and gliders; become the pilot in our flight simulator experience; tour MGA's air traffic control tower; fly in an aircraft; launch a space balloon; and tour the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, GA. Adult Co-Ed Kickball August 2019

Macon-Bibb County Recreation presents Adult Co-Ed Kickball! Team registration is only $250 and runs from June 10 through July 19-- the season begins in August! There is no roster limit, but 12 or more players are suggested.

Teams should have at least four female and four male players. To avoid potential forfeits teams must field at least eight and no more than ten players with an 11th player as an extra kicker. Games will be played on Sundays at Central City Park. Games are played in the evening, usually beginning at 6 PM. MaconBibb County Recreation will provide officials and regular & post-season awards for first and second place teams. Teams are responsible for paying registration fees, having their own roster/team, having uniforms (like color shirt/ jersey with permanent numbers). Got a Generator?

The Sound of Silence!

Hello, darkness my old friend… Sounds deep or romantic, slightly depressing.

Well, it’s that season again when a nice thunderstorm or even a hurricane may come barreling through. Ben will be rolling up his sleeves on channel 13-- and suddenly everything goes quiet…and dark! Oh no! The power has gone out!

This year, we’ve had the power go out for two days when a series of storms went through, but it was only two years ago when Hurricane Irma ripped Middle Georgia apart and the lights were off for some folks for as long as ten days…Sure need a generator as your fish in the fridge becomes a nightmare! No internet, no air conditioning…No nothin’!

Here is a heads up: Don’t wait until the lights go out to buy a generator. Usually, they sell out in about an hour-- and you will pay top dollar for a really small, junky generator. So, let’s be proactive and buy one now!

Generators come in all sizes and start at about $400 for a little portable Chinese machine that generates about 3500 watts. This size unit could keep your refrigerator and lights going and not much more. For example, if you had an electric water heater or an electric stove you would be out of luck.

The other end of the spectrum would be one of the permanent units such as Generac makes.

You can buy one of these that will run your whole house including air conditioning for about $5,000 not including installation. These are the Cadillacs of generators and operate on natural gas or propane-- and they even start themselves up to test themselves once a week automatically!

This is the bomb!

At the Dominick house, I bought a 5,000 watt portable Generac and it cost about $700. Honda also makes a good one. I decided I wanted one that used propane gas tanks that we use for our gas grill. You get about 8 hours out of each tank.

The neat thing about using propane is that it doesn’t gum up the carburetor the way gasoline does when you are not using it, so when I pulled the starter rope it started on the second pull after two years of sitting in the barn! Some of

these generators will be dual fuel which lets you choose what kind of fuel you want to use. Only commercial ones use diesel.

Speaking of pulling the rope, the bigger the generator then the harder it is to start with the rope.

So at my house, the Marvelous Meggy tells me to do the pulling. If I were buying one today, I would pick one out with an electric starter.

So, let’s summarize… I recommend at least 5,000 watts. This should run one air conditioning system-- not heat unless it’s gas heat. No electric stove, electric water heater only if the air conditioner was off… In other words, with 5,000 watts you will be juggling what can be done. If you are going smaller then you can only expect to run your refrigerator and some really low usage things like your TV or lights. If you have a gas stove or gas water heater, they hardly use any electricity at all.

Bigger is better! The bigger you buy, the more you can operate. The most you are likely to handle in a portable unit is about 9,000 watts. This baby weighs nearly 300 pounds, so you won’t just be slinging it around. But 9000 watts will run a lot of stuff.

Finally, there is the question of how you want to hook the generator up to the house. All generators operate outside the house and have a bunch of outlets built into them so you can run extension cords to various appliances-- but a better way is to have an electrician install an outlet so you can plug the generator right into the main breaker panel. Then you can simply plug into the regular wall outlets. We have one of these outlets on our front porch which is where the generator sits when we are using it. You have to be careful to make sure that the main breaker to the power company is off when you are using your generator this way or something is going to blow!

I sure wish I had that 22,000 watt Generac permanent unit so that when the power goes off then the generator will automatically start right up, everything in my house will keep working, and I won’t even need to get out of bed. That baby even senses when the main power comes back on and turns itself off! Ain’t technology and money wonderful? Whatever you get, go ahead and do it now before it’s too late!

SPREADING TRANSFORMATIVE LIBERATING LOVE IN MIDDLE GEORGIA “You just need to be a flea against injustice. Enough committed fleas biting strategically can make even the biggest dog uncomfortable and transform even the biggest nation." —MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN I have been wrestling with this idea of a movement of transformative liberating love in Middle Georgia and what that would look like in our everyday lives. For many, this will be a paradigm shift from inclusiveness to liberation.

Let's start with the idea of inclusiveness. I can invite you to sit with me on a bench, and I have included you. But oh how that changes when I ask you to sit with me and be your whole authentic self that you were created to be! No masks.

No lies. No closet. Just you and everything that makes you beautifully human.

THIS is what transformative liberating love looks like.

What would happen if we started practicing this kind of love in each of our neighborhoods, businesses, churches, homes, friend groups, everywhere we go? This is not just an LGBTQIA thing-- this is a HUMANITY thing. This idea transforms relationships and gives every person the chance to be liberated!

Liberated from systemic racism, sexism, homophobism, xenophobism, and literally any other "ism" that you can think of.

There is an old adage that everyone just wants to be accepted, but I do not believe that to be true. I believe everyone longs to be liberated! To be able to be their true authentic selves! Who will join me in this movement and help spread transformative liberating love across Middle Georgia.

Ben Dickey just looks like he’s got a good story to tell. The 6’4 Arkansawyer certainly has a history. His father played football for the 1968 Razorbacks under Frank Broyles and his mother was the Director of Special Operations for President Bill Clinton… Ben can claim a distant family relation to Johnny Cash and once, as I understand it, he was a bodyguard for Barbra Streisand. He played punk music as a teenager in Little Rock, and migrated east to The City of Brotherly Love to form the band Blood Feathers. During that time, Ben paid the bills by working in Philadelphia’s kitchens before ultimately becoming a chef.

He met Ethan Hawke through his “sweetheart” who was lifelong friends with Hawke’s wife. The two bonded over music-- especially when the subject turned to Blaze Foley, the tragic singer-songwriter who died gut-shot on an Austin, Texas street. Ben would go on to star as the titular character in Hawke’s labor of love biopic, Blaze-- his very first acting role. But even now, with a couple of film credits to his name and more in the works (he also had a role in Vincent D’Onofrio’s western, The Kid), Ben Dickey still cultivates the life of the songwriter. His latest album, A Glimmer on the Outskirts, is a jangly, sweet sophomore effort that finds Ben in good company with producer (and Blaze co-star) Charlie Sexton. It also marks the first release from SexHawkeBlack Records-- the label started by Sexton, Hawke, and SXSW co-founder Louis Black. I had a lot of questions for Ben Dickey, kids, and before I knew it, 10 minutes became 20 then 30...

AI- A Glimmer on the Outskirts... Initially, when I heard it, I knew that Charlie Sexton had been involved with the production. It has that great... I like to think of it as like a concentrated jangle that I associate with him. But I'd gone back and spent some time with Sexy Birds and Saltwater Classics and that sound [I thought was his] was all you. Tell me about putting that album together. Was this before or after you'd gotten hooked up with the movie Blaze?

BD- It was before. I still lived in Philadelphia when I made ‘Sexy Birds’, and I was still working in the kitchen. I was a chef. That was my other existence.

My band and I broke up and I was trying to put the gun to this solo album... I was working on it every other Monday for about nine or ten months-- which is not an ideal way to make a record (laughs)!

It's not-- but did the restaurant thing, working as a chef... Did you have a particular restaurant that you worked at?

Yeah, I worked at a restaurant in Philadelphia called Johnny Brenda's. It's a landmark, wonderful... You know, people want to call it a gastropub. We were more of a French-y, kinda Caribbean... When I got in there, it was kind of a soul food joint, but Johnny Brenda's is like one of the best places to play music and see music in Philadelphia-- a room about 300 can fit in. And then downstairs it's a bistro for all intents and purposes. It was seven days a week, 11:00 AM to 1:00 AM and tryin' to run a rock n' roll band at the same time. It was not a recipe for sanity.

It seems to me, having done it myself, that so many musicians come up making their day to day living in the restaurant business. Was there a point arriving where one was about to win out over the other-and maybe it wasn't the music?

Yeah, I mean it's true. So many artists can find their way in the service industry and musicians somehow always seem to float to the back of the house, the kitchen. But yeah, it started taking over my life-continued on page 26

and I love it. I'm a fan of food, I'm a fan of the culture, I'm a fan of the technique and discipline of it all. And I was a fan of working in the kitchen to the extent I became a sous chef. Then when I started running kitchens, it was really hard to do other things. Every single kitchen I ever ran, I always found my way into bargaining time with the owners-you know, as like, "Look, I'll do this and I won't give you any trouble and I'll do a good job. It'll be fun. But I'm also going to be going away for little two or three weeks here and there throughout the year.

four months is plenty of time. But when that week happened and when all those events happened trying to put together [that] record... I knew I had to do something different and that's when I sort of hatched the plan to come down to Louisiana and try to refocus my life and music the way that I really felt like I needed to. And then Blaze happened. We moved down here in the Fall of '14, and it was New Year's Eve '15 going into '16 up in New York with Ethan [Hawke] and his family that he hatched that idea out of the blue.

But it definitely took over when my band Blood Feathers broke up. I sort of dropped...

Kinda out of just be a really down and sad about it. I kind of dropped the bargain of like "freedom". I was like, "Whatever, I'll just go full throttle if you want to give me a little bit more money. And since I don't have a band anymore, I won't be going on tour or anything." And that choice was really a poor one. Some events happened in 2014 Spring where I had to part with a sous chef that I love-- he's also a musician, but he just wasn't helping me out as much as I needed. And the same week that that happened, one of the finest individuals I've ever known, a wonderful line cook and wonderful human being was killed on his bike, on his birthday after a shift... And everything just sorta stopped.

And that idea... It didn't take long for it to get out because I remember... I have a good friend here. We're both fans of Blaze Foley, that style of music. And it was like that rumor had come up and now all of a sudden we're excited. Like, "Really? There's gonna be a movie about Blaze Foley?" And the first question everybody asks is, "Who's playin' him?"And then all of a sudden it's like, "Well, who's Ben Dickey?" And then you dig a little deeper and find out that you are indeed a musician. Did you have any reservations about picking up that role?

I could see everything in slow motion and it didn't make sense to be doin' what I was doin' where I was doin' it. Part of my brain sort of shut down and all I wanted to do was do the job well until I was done. And I gave my friend, the owner that I worked for, four months notice-- which is good, you know, 26 JUNE 6-JUNE 21, 2019

Yes! I mean, it was scary. It was something I'd never done before. It's something that my friend Ethan really believed I could do, but I didn't have any vision towards that at all-nor proper ambition, you know? But I love Ethan, and I know his integrity of the way he works and what he works on. And I knew if he was going to do a movie about Blaze, he was going to take care of Blaze. That was the most important thing to me because I, like you, absolutely love Blaze Foley-- and the thing that I knew I could do... I didn't

know about the acting part, but I knew that I could be obsessive about his songs and take care of them and protect them. I can't sing exactly like Blaze-- my voice isn't deep enough-- but I can represent the song pretty close to what I believe Blaze's intention was for the song to be.

So that's what I knew I could do, and Ethan knew that I would take that seriously. From the moment that the plan was hatched, which was New Year's Eve of 2015 going into '16, a year to that moment in time, we were halfway done makin' the thing. I was unbelievably nervous, and I was not afraid (laughs) to share that nervousness! When Alia Shawkat and I first met, it was very important that we have good chemistry-and that whole process of meeting her...

Because I was someone who cared about what she did and I thought she is and was a really bright and talented person. I just wanted to make sure she didn't look at me and go, "Oh, no, this guy?� You know, deer in the headlights! (Laughs) I opened up to her pretty quickly upon our first meeting and said, "You can't believe how nervous I am." And she said, "Well, I'll tell you what, you can't believe how nervous I am! For two days, I've been putting together an outfit to come meet you guys!" And she loves Blaze too, which was a wonderful surprise because we had one pick for Sybil Rosen-- and it was Alia.

And not only did she know who he was, she absolutely adored Blaze Foley. It's always exciting when you meet somebody in their twenties that's from California that's like, "Oh yeah, Blaze Foley, I love him!"

And with so many other artists that sort of fall within that genre. I read Sybil Rosen's book, thoroughly enjoyed it-- and of course, it reads as a love story more than an exploration of the man. When you step into a role like that-- into Blaze's duct taped boots if you will-- did it feel a little strange?

Particularly when you and Charlie Sexton were banterin' back and forth as Blaze Foley and Townes Van Zandt. What was your reaction to that?

email before she came to set. She was on set the whole time. I was nervous to meet her too. Just like I was never nervous to meet Alia. It was her generosity opening up to me and telling me things about herself and Blaze and their love-- and then taking care of me. For six and a half-something weeks like that, before she came to set before we started filming, we wrote each other two or three times a day.

Well, the wind-up, first of all, [is that] I've been loving Charlie's work for a long time.

And the first thing that Charlie did-- again, we only had one choice for Townes and it was Charlie. And one of the first things that he did was he invited me to a show. He was in Baton Rouge with Bob [Dylan], and that was when I first met him. He was nervous too, going into that role. He knew those guys, man. He knew Townes, he knew Blaze, and his mother was very, very close to both of them.

He had a wonderful relationship with Townes...

During the time that I was writing her like that, all I was doing was immersing in his songs and obsessively reading the script over and over and over again. 'Cause I was just so nervous about, you know, f----n' up, man. So when that started, every single day that I was inside of that process, I had these little moments, these wonderful little like, postcards if you will, that would arrive from Sybil-- and they would be full of wonderful stories. She and I fell in love as friends and as artists and inside of her trust of me, I became a version of Blaze. And method acting and all that stuff? I'm not sure about any of that, but what I do know is that I pushed myself to the side for the whole time. That doesn't mean you couldn't talk to Ben, but I was in a different way.

His affectations of Townes are really kinda uncanny.

Exactly right. So my wind-up getting into the role-- and this is my first time doing it, and I might've gone overboard-- but I just absolutely immersed myself in Blaze's music and listenin' to his voice. In the process of doing that, I really hypnotized myself. It was the music and the songs and the intention of all the songs. Then I started a very frank and wonderful pen pal-ship with Sybil Rosen via

When Charlie and I were on set doing these things, we were no longer like, "Yo, hey, Charlie!" It was very much like I was looking at Townes-- and Blaze revered Townes. He loved Townes and called him his daddy.

He's like, "That's my soul father." That's the

way it was on set and the two of us. Charlie and I went through a heavy thing, and we shared that and bonded over that. And that was lucky because it helped both of us after the fact. I'm also really proud to call him my friend, and I love workin' and playin' with Charlie. While we were doing the scenes of us doing the bumps of cocaine and talkin' about thanks for helping out Townes, that's who and where we were. That's what we were doing.

You also got to share some time with Kris Kristofferson. That just beautifully sad and emotional scene where you and your onscreen sister [Alynda Segarra] are playing the songs for him? What was that like?

Well, I tell people this, and I've said it before, but it really is the closest that I feel like I'll ever come to meetin' Gandalf.

(Both laughing) He is a bit of a sorcerer isn't he?

He really is! Kris has this really singular power... When I say power, I mean power for good. The closest I can think of is Johnny Cash of having this presence, this huge presence that represents good and represents the right and represents sexy and represents man-- but like sensitive man- represents hope... And when Ethan told me he might come... 'Cause you know, we didn't know he was for sure going to arrive until about six hours... 'Cause you know continued on page 29

they came from Hawaii pro bono. They told us, "Yeah, yeah we're comin'," but they were off the radar for about four and a half weeks. Nobody could contact 'em and then they called him from like Dallas and said, "Hey, we'll be there shortly." Those scenes? I had to do some serious breathing exercises just to calm down because I was so, so excited to be working with Kris and to be talking with Kris. We had dinner the night before our scenes, and I just love him so much and I love his body of work and I love what it stands for. So I was just trying to slow time down so that I could absorb, you know? And when we did the scene, it's heavy stuff. It's Blaze revealing to Sybil that this guy was not a good guy, not a funny guy.

He's an awful guy. Most of the scenes that we did together, we're just staring deeply into each other's eyes. And again, I'm just trying to slow down time to be able to take it in and let him know, "Hey, I see you too, brother. I appreciate all you've done in this world."

When we finished singin' that song with Alynda Segarra and I, everybody's crying! I was crying! Kris gave us such a generous performance. Then when he started crying, it was so heavy... In the movie, we only show the beginning of where he went because he really was in that moment, and we were his kids and he was essentially saying goodbye to us.

As soon as they said cut, I said, "Is it okay if we come over there?" And Alynda and I just stuck on him for about two and a half minutes and then he's like [impersonates Kris Kristofferson voice], "Alright, you gotta let me go now." (Laughs) One more question I want to ask about the movie and then I really want to talk about your album. There's a part at the end of the credits about the fictionalization of some parts of the film, but there's a section about the portrayal of Townes...

What was behind that statement or is that something you can talk about?

I knew it! I knew that's what it was!

Yeah, pretty much. And with that goes that Townes never was over at Concho's house. He never went over to that house that anybody knows... But we don't know about that... But I think once he got down to it, he was like, "Man, my dad wouldn't have run from a fight," and everything kind of halted for the real release it for a little bit. He wasn't hijacking the movie by any measure, but he wanted something done about it. He wanted us to, a) Know that he wouldn't have run from a fight and b) We gotta do something about this. And we didn't want to lose that scene, you know? 'Cause it's a funny little moment, but it also establishes where Townes and Blaze were with one another. So I added a little ADR, you know, and when I turned my back right before that front porch fight scene and I say, "Townes, go get the car." And [JT] gave us permission to do everything, but he wanted us to put in there that this ain't really representing My intention is to what Townes is about. But what's funny is after that was all said and done, JT keep working with came to an event. And he was like, "You know what? My dad probably would've SexHawkeBlack and run from that fight!"

Yeah, I'll keep it real simple. JT Van Zandt-- who looks and sounds just like his father and is an intense individual...

He was 1000% for and all about this movie being made. He was the one that we really wanted to have no fear because he was lending some pretty big songs. It was heavy and so he was all about it. He was totally all about it though. And one thing that happened was he was like, "Man, I don't want to see it until y'all premiere at SXSW, and Ethan and I both were very nervous about that. You know, like, "What if? We don't know?" And we didn't think that anything was happening in there that he was going to be bent out of shape about. And initially he wasn't, but when he slept on it, he didn't like that Townes ran from the fight...

(Both laughing) But he wanted to have that. He was like, "I wasn't going to lose that one!"

Let's go back to A Glimmer on the Outskirts. One of the things that I think is really powerful about it is that all of the songs have a bit of a cinematic quality about them. And I mean this as a compliment-- each one seems like it could be behind the montage in a film where two people are falling in love or the character is facing an introspection for this big epiphany. When were you making A Glimmer on the Outskirts? Was that before or after the filming of Blaze?

I wrote most of the songs... I wrote about 40 songs between January and March of '17 after we finished making the movie.

Did you say 40 songs?

About 40, yeah. I write a lot.

So you're ready to roll into your next two albums?

Oh, yeah-- and then some! Luckily, the digital age exists and I can keep track of all these things. I write in clusters of songs. If I write a song, usually about five of them come continued on page 30

satelliting that one song. I sent Charlie 22 songs and his deal was, "I'm going to pick the 10, that's the deal. I'm going to pick the 10," and I was like, "Totally, that's great." I trust him, where he was at, but he actually picked two or three songs that were a little bit older.

But most of that stuff is right after we made the movie, and we recorded it in December of 2017-- and we were going to release it in 2018, but we all agreed that we didn't want to promote that record against the movie. We didn't want to have to do double time or take away from what we had worked on with Blaze. So we decided we'd push it back.

You did include one Blaze Foley song. Was that sort of like an homage?

Everybody understands that this is not a label that can be like, "Oh

sure, you wanna make a

record? Here's $40,000, go ahead! It's what

I remember putting

records out to be-- which is the do-it-yourself

thing. People sort of know what they're

doing, there's a little

bit of resources coming through, and then you

go on the road and see what happens!

Well, that song... When I was first kind of like really paying attention to Blaze, there's a couple of songs that stuck in my head. Obviously, the big ones were at the forefront, but "Sitting by the Road" was always... I don't know how to explain it... It sounded ancient. The words and it's very methodical. It's only two chords and it's got that weird little hold on the five towards the middle of it and everybody in their lifetime that's conscious has said like, "What are we doing here? What's going on here?" And the way that the song sort of did that just felt ancient. It felt like a mantra. So before we even made the movie, I would always be like kind of, "Sitting by the road...", singin' to myself.

When we finished the record, I told myself like," I've got to cover this song! I want to lift it up into a different place." And I mean, gosh, halfway through the movie I had already told Charlie like, "Yo, if we get to work together, I want to record this one and it's going to be kind of like a New Orleans second line or something, you know?" And it was a tip of my hat too, because from another dimension altogether, Blaze Foley transformed my life in a massive way. I love singing it. I love singing it with the band. I love singing it by myself. I just think it's a wonderful song.

Do you think that you could have made A Glimmer on the Outskirts... Would you have gone forward without doing the film?

Making a second record? Yeah. My expectations for what's going to happen with any of this stuff I let go of in my early twenties when I made a record that I was certain was going to break me forward and when it didn't, it absolutely positively broke my heart. And what I do love to do is to play music. What I do love to do is to write and record music and it makes it a whole lot better when you can make a living at it and people want to come hear it and connect with it.

It really does. You learn more and you're transformed more. But I would do it if [Blaze] didn't happen. Coming up with the funds and stuff is really hard, but I mean, I would have. I don't know if I would have made that album. I don't know that I would've written those songs, but I have enough songs that I would certainly have made a second album and tried to discover more things. Making a body of work and completing compositions is what I feel like my job is. So I would have definitely made a second record, but I don't know that I would have made this one.

You are as of right now, the last time I checked, the vanguard artist for a SexHawkeBlack Records. Can you tell me what you're looking at coming up down the road with this record label and your relationship with all those fellows involved, your friend Ethan Hawke, Charlie Sexton, and Louis Black?

Being involved in a project with the three of them is very exciting because all this stuff that they work on, I care about, and like, and can get behind. I just listened to a couple of new Terry Allen songs that Charlie's producin'-- and holy crap, it's f-----g amazing! I mean, just amazing. And I've been talking to Louis about the multiple projects he's got goin'...

You said Terry Allen?

Yeah, it's so good man. It's gonna knock your socks off. It's so, so good. And Ethan, right now, is making a movie about (Nikola) Tesla where he's playing Tesla and then Louis is writin' a book about his good friend Jonathan Demme who passed away. I just look around and these three individuals, and they're constantly hustling, constantly working, and constantly making art that I care about! So that's super exciting. My expectation on what's going to happen-again, I put that stuff to rest. My intention is to keep working with SexHawkeBlack and help lift it up and help grow it. It's a hard thing.

The music business is not a very fruitful garden. You have to really, really, hustle, and you’ve got to kinda pick a little section of land to grow things. I want to be a part of this squad with these guys, and I want to hold up my end of the bargain and I wanna put records out and help them find artists.

And who knows what's going to happen with it? Right now it's alive and breathing and the record is doing well and we're doing press like we are with talking with you. And I just went out and played 60+ shows since January. Most of that was solo. My intention is to get my band together that I had at South by Southwest who are all my good friends that I want to be able to like pay, you know? My goal is to get myself in the position to pay a band to go on the road and keep playing. And inside of that, I believe, SexHawkeBlack-- at least for my part of it-- will benefit. The stuff that they have possibly coming down the pipelines to release is exciting. And the artists that are kind of being attracted is exciting. There's a lot of gravity with those three individuals. There's a lot of people that kind of perked up their ears and eyes, you know, "I want to be involved!"

Anybody you can share?

There's two notions that I cannot talk about, but I can tell you that one of them, when you hear about it, you'll be like. "Wait-- what?"

I'll put it this way, it's from the past. It's already happened, but it's something that's gonna knock you out, man. I knew it existed when I heard it and heard more about it... It's very, very exciting. I don't

know if it's going to happen. I should say I should probably say that, but something's going to happen with these recordings. On top of that, there's a couple of contemporary artists who are just flirting, you know, wanting to know what's going on. Everybody understands that this is not a label that can be like, "Oh sure, you wanna make a record? Here's $40,000, go ahead! It's what I remember putting records out to be-- which is the do-it-yourself thing. People sort of know what they're doing, there's a little bit of resources coming through, and then you go on the road and see what happens! That's where it is right now. And I love all those fellas and I love what they stand for and what they work on. So if we can keep doing it like this, I'd be really into it.

Are you going to have a role or cameo appearance in the new Louvin Brothers biopic?

We're talking about it, yeah. Originally I was going to, and then the script kind of changed, but we'll see. I'm working on something in the fall with Ethan... The Good Lord Bird is a book about John Brown, the abolitionist and the siege at Harper's Ferry. And, again, that role is pretty small. I'm not pursuing the acting thing hard as in I'm going out for auditions, etc. But I'm getting offers and having conversations. The Louvin Brothers thing... I've been around the nucleus of it. That thing's been brewin' for five, six years. I'm such a huge Louvin fan, I've been really rootin' for Ethan to figure out how to make it work. I love Alessandro [Nivola]. I've heard them sing, I've watched them do their thing. I just think this is going to be great and if they invite me to participate in it as an actor, I'd be thrilled.

BY SHANE BUERSTER THE BEST WAY TO FIND OUT IF YOU CAN TRUST SOMEBODY IS TO TRUST THEM. -ERNEST HEMINGWAY The Mercer On Mission Trip was over. We were leaving Zaruma.

Arturo asked if I could come to his house for dinner.

He wanted to say farewell before I returned to The States. I asked Dr. Kiefer, the leader of the Mercer On Mission trip to Ecuador, if I could go. He paused, looked at me for a second and asked, "Where does he live?" I told him that Arturo lived up by the square-no more than a mile away.

Dr. Kiefer shook his head, "That's pretty far and it’s late. I'm not sure if that's safe."

"Trust me-- I'll be careful. What if I bring a friend with me?"

"Fine. Be back by 8."

Not knowing what to expect, Andy and I left with Arturo, a man we'd come to know pretty well over the past couple of weeks. We got to Arturo's apartment after a 10-minute walk. His wife, Anita, and daughter, Roseangela, had prepared dinner. As we ate, Arturo told us jokes and stories about his childhood. I did my best to translate them for Andy, as my Spanish is still suspect. After dinner, Andy and I sat on the couch with Arturo across from us. He told us story after story until we realized that we should be getting back.

Arturo offered to walk us back to the hotel. But first, he asked to exchange WhatsApp numbers. He told us to stay in touch whenever we returned. I assured him that I would.

10 minutes later, we arrived. Dr. Kiefer acknowledged us. We’d stayed true to our end of the deal. We were back by 8.

Arturo gave me a handshake-- but I saw uncertainty in his eyes. He stared at me for a second. His parting words were, "Please, stay in touch."

Mine were, "I will. I promise." He put his head down and walked away.

HE WHO DOES NOT TRUST ENOUGH WILL NOT BE TRUSTED. - LAO TZU The farmer had yet to arrive. It was 9:30 at night, and we were still stuck in Pinas-- 20 miles away from home. Arturo told me not to worry-- we would be heading back soon, and the farmer would be there any minute.

At 10:15, Arturo called the farmer for the fourth time.

The farmer had a different story than the previous

three... He wasn’t going to come. He couldn’t make it. Arturo didn’t say a word as he hung up the phone.

He knew I was well aware of what just occurred. In unison, we got up and headed out the front door of the processing facility to look for the nearest taxi. “$4 to Portovelo. I’m not driving up to Zaruma tonight,” the taxi driver mutters.

Knowing Portovelo is a dangerous city at night, I didn’t think it was a good idea. I told Arturo that we shouldn’t do it. Not only was the city dangerous, but I still had the cash on me that I’d been planning to give to the farmer. Arturo, with his pride dancing on his right shoulder, told me not to worry. We got in the cab, and an uneasy feeling sat inside me.

We pulled up next to the famous miner statue located in the central park of Portovelo. I began surveying my surroundings, looking for the nearest taxi-- or potential sign of trouble. I noticed a young, maybe 15-year-old kid, sitting on the street corner. I glanced away looking for real danger. I told Arturo that we needed to get to the nearest taxi. I didn’t care if I needed to pay a few extra dollars. I wanted to get out of there. He pushed his right hand down three times as if to say, “Calm down.”

A high pitch whistle pierced my ears.

I targeted the point of origin. It was the 15-year-old kid. We locked eyes. I looked to my left at a group of six guys talking. They perked up. Arturo passed another taxi on the right, trying desperately to save me a few bucks. But desperation was all around. I felt it.

I pulled Arturo by his shirt and opened a taxi door.

“Get in.”

The experience opened my eyes. I trusted the people of Ecuador-- each and every one of them, for they had always trusted me. However, as the cliché goes, desperate times called for desperate measures. A good man will make a poor decision if he is desperate enough. Since Arturo lived in desperation, knew that I was his good friend, and knew that I would give him the shirt off of my back, he trusted that I wouldn’t leave him out to dry. But this situation made me think, and so I ask you: If you were desperate-- you had no money, you just lost your job, and your twoyear-old has gone to bed hungry the last two nights, and a beam of hope flashed in front of your face-- do you take advantage of the opportunity?

Sure, you do.

Desperation loves hope as trust loves forgiveness.

Whatever the intentions may have been that night. I forgave because I understood.

BO TALKS THE HEAT IS ON

The older I get and the longer I live in the south (my whole life), the more you would think I have grown accustomed to these brutal summer temperatures. Like getting tattoos, I always assumed the more I got the less they would hurt. But as the old adage goes, “When you assume you make a bad mistake and end up getting tattooed in a tender location right before going to the beach and end up with a sunburn that makes it practically impossible to even sleep because the sheets feel like molten magma against your fevered skin.” I’m over it.

If the winter gets “as cold as a witch’s tit,” I’d hate to think what fantastical and anatomical location we’ve found ourselves embedded in these last couple of weeks.

Somewhere lost in Rasputin’s nether-regions or pinned between the cheeks of a goblin’s backside probably. Bottom line, somewhere no one wants to be. Certainly not anyone who doesn’t have some kind of demonic fairytale fetish…

And which I don’t intend to kink-shame-- it is 2019 after all.

I’m just saying remember to use

protection. I recommend an SPF of 30 or higher.

In a way, I’m glad it gets this hot.

You non-gingers finally get a taste of what many of us endure practically anytime the sun kisses our flesh. I’m simply not cut out for it, and I appreciate seeing people who don’t normally have to deal with sunblock suddenly having to slather themselves with that unpleasant body mayonnaise.

It’s gross and to be honest, my skin likes most sunblock about as much as it likes the sun. We seemed locked into this threeway death match, where the sun and sunblock battle against each other, and I’m Gerry Rafferty— stuck in the middle. Like one of those cartoon fights where we turn into a big cloud of rolling smoke with light beams, tattooed limbs, and globs of Banana Boat sunscreen randomly flying out from the edges. I’m just waiting on Bugs Bunny to walk by and nonchalantly toss in a heaping ball of squamous cell carcinoma.

Now, maybe it got dark there for a second, but real talk, I lost

my grandfather to skin cancer.

And I’ve literally been to the ER for a sunburn before… So maybe the dark isn’t such a bad place for me personally. In this heat, under that oppressive and unrelenting Georgia sun, my body is essentially a genetic timebomb.

Ticking away faster and faster with every piece of plastic thrown into the ocean and every can of hairspray emptied. It’s past time for redheads of the world to rise up against this war on nature, if for no other reason than our own selfinterest! We’ve all seen the movies.

You think I’m cut out for that post-apocalyptic desert wasteland?

Everyone’s lips are super chapped and you never see anyone apply sunblock. And all that leather? I’m positively doomed! Doomed I say!

ELECTRIC, THE CULT What happens when a blossoming and critically acclaimed gothic rock band decides to recruit the go-to producer for Def Jam Records in an attempt at reinvention? That is the question every eyeliner trimmed goth rock fan this side of the Atlantic was asking about The Cult in 1987. Electric was the answer that Ian Astbury and company unleashed upon the MTV generation of the ‘80s and while the spooky, hippie aesthetic didn’t make the transition, the album opened The Cult up to the fist pumping world of arena sized hard rock. From the opening guitar riff of “Wild Flower” it’s apparent that things had changed in The Cult’s world. Billy Duffy’s guitar tone has more in common with AC/DC than the washy, glittery tones of Love-- but once Ian Astbury’s voice joins the festivities, it quickly begins to feel like The Cult. After “Wild Flower” the band powers through “Peace Dog” and “Lil’ Devil”, which have all become regular staples of their live set. It isn’t until the fourth song, “Aphrodisiac Jacket”, that Electric’s pace slows down. With the delta blues inspired riff and cranked 100 watt Marshall sound, “Aphrodisiac Jacket” sounds similar to the offerings on Danzig’s 1988 self-titled album. The second half of the album delivers more hard rocking riffs via “Bad Fun” and “King Contrary Man” all while showcasing the fleet fingered talents of Billy Duffy.

If I had one complaint it would be the inclusion of “Born To Be Wild” on this album. History normally isn’t overwhelmingly kind to rock bands who change their image and sound drastically between albums. Be that as it may, The Cult beat the odds here. Electric still has plenty of power to rock your playlist all summer long.

DYNAMITE KID: A MATTER OF PRIDE

It’s unfortunate that generations of “sports entertainment” fans are largely unaware of Dynamite Kid. Of course, if you are a wrestlin’ fan, you know what an amazing performer he was in the ring… And what a brutal piece of work he could be outside of it. He was the epitome of talent and tenacity, a pitbull in a mastiff ’s world who did whatever he could to succeed-- and that attitude and punishing style left him with few friends and confined to a wheel chair. Back in 2012, a crew from the great Highspots website set out for Manchester, England to interview the semi-reclusive Tom Billington aka Dynamite Kid. They quickly realized they had more than a simple shoot interview on their hands. Don’t expect a WWEstyle glossy rise & fall & ultimate redemption tale where Dynamite’s peers heap praises upon his underrated career-- no, this legend is made of darker stuff. You can purchase a download or DVD at highspots.com or stream the doc through their on demand service (which is definitely worth a trial at $10 for a whole month, no commitment). Dynamite Kid passed away last December, and his legacy in pro wrestling rests beside a bloody reputation as a bully. But however history chooses to summarize him, no one whoever stepped into the ring with Dynamite Kid-- or witnessed his ability-- will ever forget him.

BRAIN ON FIRE This 2016 Netflix Original is based on Susannah Cahalan’s book titled Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness. The film brings Cahalan’s compelling and unusual story to life as Chloe Grace Moretz plays a witty, talented New York Post writer that suddenly experiences scary symptoms of psychosis.

After seeing multiple doctors and being told their daughter is schizophrenic, Cahalan’s parents keep their faith and hold out hope for a doctor that will find a diagnosis. Once they finally find the right doctor, Cahalan is diagnosed with antiNMDA receptor encephalitis. This illness, which was discovered only three years before Cahalan’s diagnosis, causes one side of the brain to become severely inflamed, resulting in hallucinations, seizures, and fever-- all of which Cahalan suffers.

The film not only illustrates Cahalan’s unbelievable courage, but it also demonstrates a family’s strength in the toughest moments and a doctor’s determination when all hope seems lost. It is a movie for any family battling the impossible and coming out on the other side together.

THE ALEX CROSS SERIES BY JAMES PATTERSON It seems that making the time to read becomes more of a chore with every passing year. There are so many other, easier things to do-- Netflix, scrolling on your phone, staring into space, etc. I once would fight late into the night to finish one more chapter… Now I can spend three months on a 200-page novel. If you’re in the same boat, no judgement here-- but here’s a series that might make the taxing job of reading a little more enjoyable. Released in 1993, the first book of the series is Along Came a Spider, following a detective/father’s thrilling life of fighting against crime and protecting his family. Many say the first book is the best, so even if the series doesn’t grip you, the first book will at least be worth the read! And out of Patterson’s 147 novels, I would say that this 26 book series is the best of the bunch with more to come. On another note, the Washington Memorial Library has started their Youth Summer Reading Program, and it goes through August. This is a great way to inspire kids to begin reading now by earning prizes and achieving a goal, setting them up for a lifetime of reading.

A mostly calm group with a few rowdy people ready to hear some good acoustic music turned 47 out to see Matt Costa on The Creek Stage. He isn’t a small or undiscovered artist by any means-33 he has collaborated and toured with Jack Johnson, as well as released albums through Johnson’s Brushfire Records-- but this was his first time in Macon. I think Matt’s steely, honest sound fit in 37 very well here. Small, intimate shows like that are so different from larger shows. The members of the band make eye contact with the audience. They talk a little less and play a little more.RE-ENTRY I’m not saying that I don’t enjoy larger shows, but when a band plays for more intimate rooms, they seem to focus a little more on each other and their music more. Imagine playing for ten 46 people versus ten thousand-- perhaps a smaller crowd puts more focus on the presentation.

36 Festivals, for example, have thousands of people to entertain, while small crowds get a more honest presentation of the artist. Costa and his band played music from his 2006 debut and 39 newer songs, including his latest single, “Make That Change.” During “Bleeding Hearts,” Costa brought out a trumpet, and on “Never Looking Back,” he played a unique version that included 38 a harmonica. The harmonica and the accordion are two of my favorite instruments. As soon as I hear those sounds, I’m back in my Gramma’s house playing cards and dominos, drinkingRE-ENTRY coffee milk, and eating gumbo. Despite a last minute venue change, Matt Costa put on a fine DEBUT show, and I look forward to seeing what he does next.
